So, you said Lady Gaga was maybe the last diva ... but what about Billie Eilish, Carly Rae, Lana del Rey, Florence and the Machine, Marina, and Mitski? I know I listed a bunch of artists, but I specifically choose these ones for their large queer/gay fanbases and (w/ the exception of Eilish) their lack of mainstream popularity. (I feel like Carly isnt mainstream anymore .... maybe Im wrong, though.)
There's no real formula, but here are qualities associate with diva worship as far as I see it:
-Larger than life. This might be the biggest one. Do they stand out? Are they bold? Funny? Glamorous? Would a drag queen want to impersonate them?
-Theatrical/proximity to theater. Everyone hates theater kids these days but you can't deny that traditionally this was a big deal. Not everything has to be a club banger. Ballads can be gay.
-Sexy/horny. This one is controversial, so I want to say that none of these points are "required" and certainly not this one. No one is questioning Liza Minnelli's gay icon status because she doesn't sex it up. But it's also no secret that gay men like horny women. When the Cock Destroyers duo didn't reach their possible target audience of straight men, gay men had their back. Kind of.
-Strength. If gay boys aren't crying to her that her strength inspired him to move out of Ohio, she's not a gay icon.
-Niche. A gay icon can be popular, sure, but not a crowd pleaser to just any crowd. I had a swiftie yell at me, "at least Taylor makes music for everyone and not just gays like your [presumed] fav Lady Gaga!" This irked me but I didn't take offense to it. Universality is impossible. The closest any artists came to universality is the abstract expressionists, and the average person thinks they're full of shit. But if you know your audience and intimately connect with them, that's better than any broad brush.
-Support for gay rights. This one is kind of obsolete. It's not a big deal anymore for a singer to come out in support of gay rights (the closest recent examples I can think of are The Chicks, which stood out more because they were standing against the country music establishment, and Carly Rae Jepsen cancelling that Boy Scouts concert). But if a singer was pro gay before it was cool, that stands out.
The glaring blind spot in my analysis is, hello, gay women? Lesbian/bi women music really is a blind spot for me, in part because they don't quite do the same "diva worship" treatment. But from the queer women I know, they're more loyal about listening to actual queer artists (most gay icons are straight, after all), more acoustic, more cathartic, less tethered to dance and bar culture. The main overlaps I see here are niche-ness and camp.
A lot of the singers you listed cultivate some sort of character. That's campy. Marina did this very explicitly with Elektra Heart, Lana with her whole "blue jeans fat cock" Americana thing, Florence with her acoustic witch thing. Mitski to me marks a transition where lesbian fan culture is getting more visibility in the public eye. Genuinely love that for my lesbians. But despite it all I really don't know if any are "divas" in the old guard sense. Gay is more mainstream now, the internet changed the face of diva worship (now called stan culture I suppose), and a lot of new music strives too hard for "relatability." Any true icon would feel dizzyingly out of place on TikTok. So, I'll leave that to other gays to figure out.

A Song and a Pitch
Pairing: (Y/N) x Corey Seager
A/N: I went a little crazy with this one, I started and just couldn’t stop, so sorry about that.
Warnings: none
Request:I have a request for Corey Seager were the reader and Corey are dating and the reader is a famous singer and is performing the national anthem and throws out the first pitch
“What if I forget the words? What if my voice cracks? What if my pitch is awful? If I throw a horrible pitch, i’m gonna be put on a list with Carly Rae Jepsen and 50 Cent, and I do not want to be on that list.” You were pacing around Corey and your shared bedroom.
“Are you really that worried? You have performed for way bigger crowds than the crowd at Dodger Stadium.” He laughed.
“Yes, I know that, but in the music world, the National Anthem is sacred and if you mess it up, you are basically a joke. I really don’t want that.” You say sitting on the edge of the bed.
“You are not going to forget the words, your voice is not going to crack, you are going to do exactly what you always do and you are going to rock that stadium.” He says pulling you into his chest.
“As for the pitch, I’ve seen you thrown and I don’t have high hopes.” He laughed.
“Asshole.” You say hitting his chest.
“Even if you do mess up, it’s me on the other side of the plate, I will make you look good.” He says kissing your forehead.
“Thanks, but if I look bad, it’s on you.” You say.
The two of you fall asleep, leaving any stress you have in the rearview mirror, well until the morning. When you wake up Corey is already gone.
“Damn morning workouts.” You say to yourself.
Stress does come back as the day goes by, but you stay calm knowing Corey will be right there with you. Arriving at the stadium, you feel the butterflies in your stomach as you are taken in the players entrance and through the halls, and up to where the organist is placed.
“We’ll let you warm up and then we will come get you, we will run you through everything as we walk down to the field.” The woman smiles.
“Awesome! Thank you!” You smile back.
As you start to warm up, Sue, the woman who runs the social media stops by.
“Hey (Y/N), do you mind if I take some videos for our story?” She asks.
“Not at all! Do what you need to do.” You say going back to your warmup.
As you warmup you look down and see the guys taking batting practice, and you nerves start to ease, because you really are just performing in front of a bunch or your friends.
“Knock, Knock. (Y/N) are you ready to get down to the field?” The woman who dropped you here said as she came in.
“Let’s do it, I think I am all warmed up.” You smile.
“Alright you can follow me.” She said.
You follow her out the door and to an elevator.
“We’re gonna give you a mini-tour and then we’ll go through the clubhouse, and out to the dugout. Then you will have about fifteen minutes to mingle with fans and players, after that we will give you the mic and you can do your thing. After the National Anthem, there will be about a five to ten minute gap, and then you will throw out the first pitch, its says you be throwing to Corey Seager, oh, well I could have guessed that.” She laughed
You sometimes forget that everyone who keeps up with pop culture, also is exposed to your love life. You and Corey had gone public a few months ago and you both don’t regret to for a second.
You arrive to the halls leading to the clubhouse, they are riddled with glass case adorned with World Series Trophies, Golden Gloves, and Silver Sluggers. Following the woman she takes you through the clubhouse, the same one that is closed to the public, which almost made you feel as if you weren’t supposed to be there. Then the hallway from the clubhouse to the dugout, you could hear the buzzing from the guys and the stadium alike.
You walked through the dark hall, following the light of the California sun. When you walked out, all you friends greeted you. Cody, Justin, Chris, and Will all wished you luck and followed you out to the field.
“(Y/N), you are going to do great, Corey said you were a little nervous.” Chris said.
“I was last night, but now that I am here, I feel pretty good.” You said.
“Surprise!” Corey said grabbing your shoulder from behind.
“Hey babe!” You said.
“How are you feeling?” He asked.
“I’m feeling really good. I’m ready to go.” You smile.
“(Y/N), are you ready?” The woman asks.
“Let’s do this.” You say looking at Corey.
“You are gonna do great.” He says.
“And to perform our National Anthem, Grammy winning recording artist, (Y/N) (L/N)!”
The crowd goes crazy, and you wave and smile at the camera projecting you on the jumbo-trons.
“Take it away (Y/N)!” The voice booms again.
You take a deep breathe..
“Oh say can you see…”
“That was amazing! Thank you (Y/N)! Now get warmed up for your first pitch!” The voice comes over the stadium, though you can hardly hear it over the crowd.
The woman ushers you over to the pitching mound and hands you the ball.
“Good luck!” She says walking away.
“Now throwing the first pitch, welcome (Y/N) again! She will be pitching to Corey Seager.” The crowd gives an overwhelming “awww”, which you can’t help but laugh.
“I love you.” Corey mouths.
“I love you too.” You mouth back.
You go into your windup, emulating a Clayton Kershaw, and you let it rip. Now it wasn’t the best pitch Dodger Stadium has ever seen, but it made it pretty far before bouncing to the ground, the bouncing to Corey’s glove.
You can’t help but celebrate, by jumping in the air.
“Great pitch (Y/N)!” The voice boomed again.
Corey jogged over to you with a huge smile on his face.
“Alright guys look at me and hold the ball up, I gotta get this online.” Sue said with her camera.
You two posed for the picture and smiled.
“Thanks guys!” Sue said looking up briefly from her camera.
“You did amazing (Y/N), I could not be more proud of you.” Corey kissed you on the cheek.
“I was no Clayton Kershaw, but I did alright.” You laughed.
“Alright (Y/N), we gotta go so this game can start.” The woman said.
“Have a good game, I love you.” You said turning to Corey.
“I love you too.” He said as she ushered you back to the dugout.
You found your way to your seat with your friends right behind the Dodger dugout, and you watched Corey take his team to victory, I would say it was a pretty good night for the both of you.

first line meme!
rules: list the first lines of the last ten (10) stories you published. look to see any patterns you notice yourself, and see if anyone else notices any. then tag some friends. i was tagged by @sarsaparillia
stellar drift (blaseball) / an introduction to scores/envy and scores character study / Excerpts from the Handbook, fourth edition. Published November XX93. “…The Scorekeeper will be assigned to a randomized Stadium at the beginning of each season...”
waking of the world (the starless sea) / inception au / It feels like home. That’s the thing that Zachary had wanted, or at least what he wanted more than most other things.
the way you handle my name (blaseball) / firefighters romancing / It’s not that big of a deal, really. Caleb has done a great job of controlling the entire… situation, whatever it is, and they think it’s proof enough of their success that Isaac is only noticing it now.
the valor i have won (blaseball) / don mitchell character study / Noise is the great enemy. The jingle of a bracelet or a wallet chain is the difference between a getaway and a chase; the sound of a bell or an alarm means the jig is up.
plant matter (blaseball) / on chorby short, gloria bugsnax and the garden / It isn’t that Gloria pays more attention than other people. It’s that xe knows what to look for. There’s a difference between those things.
watching through my fingers (blaseball) / an introduction to baby ruthless/castillo turner / Declan has seen the cactus.  Like, in the most literal sense, he has stepped onto the field and seen a cactus there, in a pot, and somehow that cactus played blaseball and he never really questioned it.
not far behind (hades game) / thanatos and persephone at the cottage / It wouldn’t be quite right to say Persephone recognizes the stranger in her garden. He’s grown since she last saw him, no longer the child she knew, a boy barely taller than her knee. But there are pieces, clues that help to put the puzzle pieces together.
dying to live (blaseball) / lenny marijuana and the end / “Nagomi Nava speaking. Who is this?” “Wow. I don’t know what’s worse, that my number isn’t in your phone or that precog doesn’t give you caller ID powers.”
when the morning comes (blaseball) / lorcan smaht and brisket friendo palm springs au / Briskie isn’t a huge fan of weddings. He’s done everything he can to make this a more enjoyable experience for himself, from setting his phone’s alarm to Carly Rae Jepsen in the mornings to hiding a book in his jacket to read during the reception.
the sweeter parts of life (blaseball) / on the yellowstone magic and returning home / A light enters the shadows of the grove with far less caution than many others. There is death here, held in the network of roots and whispered by the wind between the branches.
THOUGHTS: man. can you tell i hate writing dialogue? i can tell. i think it is fairly obvious, actually, given that there is almost none of it here. actually more broadly speaking i think there is a certain rhythm to my introductions that comes from having the inverted pyramid drilled into my brain over and over again: start broad, with a generalized statement, and then narrow in until about the third or fourth sentence which will have the main thrust of the idea and give you what the fic is actually about. a lot of first lines here kind of follow that. which is a good thing to keep in mind, i guess! it was exciting to find the ones where i hadn’t done that.
not sure who hasn’t already been tagged. if you haven’t, but you’d like to try it, consider yourself tagged.

(honks car horn) tell me headcanons about pietro and wanda x men evolution!! (and also spare kurt headcanons if you have them)
waaa putting it under read more because damn i ended up doing a lot but THANK YOU for asking!!
Wanda-
Realistic Headcanon: She likes parks. there's a maintained freedom about them that soothes her. it's wide and open and easy to leave if she wants. there are tons of people, none of whom, are there to hurt her or talk to her. she can watch the water or the birds and feel like she's existing, and part of the world, rather than just watching it go by from her hospital window.
Hilarious but unrealistic Headcanon: she and pietro have an extremely annoying way of speaking to each other that's essentially a mess of unfinished sentences and gestures. despite time apart, they read each other perfectly and know what the other is trying to say. to others it looks like pantomime on acid. to them it's an argument of who finished the fruit loops and put the empty box back in the cabinet.
heart-crushing and awful Headcanon: Wanda struggles to learn how to trust and share herself with others. in the hospital, she wasn't allowed privacy or peace of mind. everything was invasive and demanding. getting out was equal parts freeing and horrific. she realized people weren't entitled to her personal thoughts and feelings, but if she wanted to be known, she'd have to give them up herself.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own: Wanda had a crush on Rogue for a little bit after first seeing her. Really, it was just Goth Solidarity she was experiencing, but this experience really helped her realize she might not be straight and also she should be brave and push herself to talk to people more so she can ask Rogue how she gets her eyeshadow to look that foggy. Perhaps from there she can work her way up to maybe talking to more girls
Pietro-
Realistic Headcanon: Pietro has a minor form of dyslexia as a side effect of his super speed. yes, he can read, no he's not processing it right. It lead to a lot of struggling in school because he'd go over everything so quickly without understanding or retaining it. He doesn't like people knowing either.
Hilarious but unrealistic Headcanon: His sense of humor is so fucking weird. he'll laugh at Goya's Saturn Devouring his son while saying "mondays amiright??" but he loses patience and interest if you make him wait for a punchline. if you want to tell him joke, you're better off showing him a deep fried picture of a goat wearing a hat. humor has to be at least half as quick as he is or he doesn't care.
heart-crushing and awful Headcanon: often times he feels alienated from others because of his speed. this especially comes into play with how he processes emotions. if his team is angry or sad, he is too, but really only for about an hour because he's processed it and move on. often times he comes off as insensitive or cruel because he's not reacting properly to negative feels in the house but it's because he's already worked through it and can't understand how everyone else is still hung up on it. he's tried to explain how this works for him, but words are hard and it's easier for him to feel angry and attacked
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own: he loves music of all kinds. one of the ways he keeps himself from speeding in public is humming a song in his head repeatedly to match his walk or movements with the rhythm. he also just constantly has music playing to help keep him entertained when doing boring tasks like laundry or cleaning. this was especially helpful when getting Wanda back in his life because they could just swap songs and bond over that rather than talk about complex childhood trauma or hurt feelings. ooh listen to Carly Rae Jepsen don't think about having magneto for a dad
AND KURT!!
Realistic Headcanon- no matter the discrimination he's suffered in his childhood regarding his appearance, he's always the kindest and sweetest person when meeting new students. he approaches every new situation with curiosity and excitement that's something that can never be taken out of him. he always sees the good in people.
Hilarious but unrealistic Headcanon: his fur puffs up badly in the summer. any ounce of humidity can turn him into a giant blue pomeranian. he tries very hard to combat this by using as much conditioner as possible, but this has created the new issue of becoming too sleek and slippery to hold onto. personally he doesn't see it as an issue because he can't get grabbed during training but also he's basically slipping around everywhere.
heart-crushing and awful Headcanon: Kurt has long since accepted the possibility that he'll be alone in life. it's one of those things he tries so hard not to think about, but he didn't have friends growing up. high school is temporary, life is moving at a speed that may take him out of his circle that's created such a safe place for him. he won't always be somewhere mutant friendly, nor will he have that safety net. he understands that he might just wake up one day and be alone.
Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own: he and scott had crushes on each other at different points. it was always one of those unaddressed weird things that everyone saw but no one talked about. neither of them would have acted on it, and it wouldn't have gone anywhere anyway. but it definitely brought them closer as friends. unspoken feelings for each other made it easier to open up and talk about anything. out of everyone on the team, they know and trust each other the most.

One Day In December is such a good novel. I can’t believe I read the scorpio book recommendation and picked this up; whoever the astrologer person from the library is they really hit the mark. My god im literally sobbing. This is so goood!
Laurie and Jack have the most ordinary and mundane yet antsy and frustrating love story ever. I mean, this is a romcom so obviously they’ll end up together but the book spends like +300 pages making it seem impossible for that to happen! So many life moments that really shove them together but also tear them apart. So much unspoken tension!! So much unspoken truths!! so much to lose!! But as it near the ending and they’re both really figuring out their lives instead of finding distractions, or brushing aside feelings and red flags, and BOOM right in the feels. ahhh, i’ve never teared up for a love story before but I did for this! wow!!
Tumblr media
“Might as well,” I grumbled. “My love life is official dead.”
Sarah screws up her finished-with fish-and-chip paper. “You’ve only got yourself to blame,” she says.
She’s referring to bus boy, of course. He’s reached near-mythical status now, and I’m on the very edge of giving up on him. Ten months is a long time to look for a complete stranger on the off-chance that they’ll be single, into me, and not an axe murderer. Sarah is of the vocal opinion that I need to move on, by which she means I need to find someone else before I turn into a nun. I know she’s right, but my heart isn’t ready to let him go yet. That feeling when we locked eyes--I’ve never had that before, ever.
i dog-eared this page because this is meeeeeeeeeeeee. not that ive ever had a love at first sight sighting in my entire life (but no one is gonna stop me from not making eye contact on public transport and hoping for the best!!). i love that Laurie is just as wistful; makes me feel better about myself (and makes me foolishly hopeful!!!) lol.
*spoilers*
Anyways, the time passage through this book was speedy; literally years pass as we read on. I was so anxious because its like long stretches of time passes and it literally takes years for them to officially get together. This is very different than other romcom books I’ve read since those generally is more quick to lead to the happy ending. And I guess it’s true. Love develops over time and at the same time, the time needed to *try* to get over someone but also figure yourself out as you age through your twenties. It’s never constantly spending time with someone either; its long stretches of time away from each other too. Most of the things that happen are really really mundane. It’s not grand, its not dramatic and its very quiet. Nobody makes quick decisions here and it’s so drawn out.
It’s like how working at a job you hate can just escape you and you end up staying for too long. This book covers both the career stalemate and the love portion--staying in a relationship because you’ve built it and its actively choosing to keep it going even though it obvious not going to last. Even when Sarah and Laurie have their fall out, a good distance between time passes and I think that’s very normal. Even when they reunite again, its quiet and just casual and they slowly work back up to being the bestest friends again. Laurie and Jack relationship’s was actively trying not to engage with one another and it really showed--but its not completely radio silence nor intense heated moments. It’s fleeting because they both recognize that if they got together they would hurt Sarah, and then eventually Oscar and probably themselves the mostly. It’s watching them seeing the other person be with someone else or moving through life at a different speed and feeling like they’re too late and then having their paths diverge even more and then connecting at realizing the feelings are still here, and then diverging again and coming again. Their relationship is the definition of missed opportunities!!! But I think this is the most accurate account of adult relationships I’ve ever read so far and its really refreshing.
Tumblr media
^ my literal face as i read the last few pages
*personal thoughts*
This gave me a really good insight into the world of dating and relationships and love. I am so used to reading these big grand things happening that the universe allow these two people to meet and create this magic. There’s the hurdles to jump through but they get through in the end and its implied that because they have the biggest element, which is love, means that they will be ok. They might have friends who root for them, they have little mice and birds to help them, so many elements in a typical romcom universe that pushes these two together. But this book was different.
As Jack dates Sarah, we know they don’t fit well but they stick it out. They actively try to date and get to know each other so they spend months to years dating. And its not that Jack only thinks about Laurie but rather its always in the background. Laurie tried to stay out of the way and Jack does the same. It’s wild to think that someone you have an almost instant connection with might not actually be what you want and you have to actively see the reality of the situation and actively live your life. To figure out if what you have with that person can technically work--makes it clear that a relationship IS work. It’s not passionate and fire! it’s very small, its texting every day and slowly giving a piece of yourself to this person. And its inconvenient as hell!!! Even Laurie being with Oscar, and actually getting married and trying to make married life work for them was mundane and average. There was no point where there was a dramatic STOP THE WEDDING, or like screaming “I Love You’s” and such for Laurie and Jack. Nobody was the bad guy and did the bad thing that made people realize that they don’t belong together; none of that! Oscar never cheated or became problematic, even Jack realized that have casual relationships wasn’t for him; nothing dramatic like that at all. Nobody actively objected to Laurie/Oscar’s union and nobody was actively rooting to get Jack and Laurie together. It had to be them, as individuals, choosing each other which is so fucken sweet and such a good expectation to have regarding romance love. Even though it started as a chance love at first sight moment, it ended up being them actively choosing and actively seeking out their own happiness and idea of what they want in life and then declaring it, separately, to each other that made them work as a couple. well there was a bit of a fanfare at the end of the book but it was cute. It was normal people! finding love! for each other!! I love this so much!!!

Taylor Swift, Carly Rae Jepsen, Ed Sheeran…if she’s really feeling it some Florence and the Machine. Loves KPop too. I’ll let Lauryl tell me who she stans. (Is that the phrase I feel like there is a phrase.) Anyway, anything that is love related, she’ll give it a listen. Books — Doesn’t actually like reading that much, tbh. Doesn’t hold her interest. Magazines — Do people read magazines anymore? Does Buzzfeed count as a magazine? Probably giggles over Cosmopolitan. Foods — Sweets! Chocolate is her favorite, but she likes licorice a lot too. Is one of those weird people that likes black licorice. Also, loves a good rice pudding. That’s probably her favorite dessert. She also loves chicken, any kind of chicken–she doesn’t care what you put it in or what you put on it. Isn’t much of a picky eater. Actually really enjoys being adventurous with her food. Drinks — Green tea, green tea, green tea! Mei loves tea, especially iced. She also surprisingly likes salt soda water–she goes back and forth on sweet and savory. Sometimes, she just really wants salt soda water because it is just crisp and refreshing and wakes her back-up and reorients her yin-yang when she needs it. Animals — Elephants! Mei loves elephants. She’s that girl that has like elephant shirts and an elephant backpack and an elephant stuffed animal probably. They have such a high emotional capacity and Mei really respects them for this. They are also just so cute with their floppy ears and their soft, sweet eyes! Loves birds too as most of them are symbols of good luck and good tidings–besides owls, which are harbingers of death. Sports — Gymnastics and dance. Social Issues — Magick Rights is the biggest one. Also feminism. Also all the “main” issues. Favorite Saying — “Better to light a candle, than to curse the darkness” - Chinese Proverb Color — Golds, yellows, reds, blues are her favourites. She loves gold because it is a Classy color. Most of her jewelry is gold. She loves yellow because it is bright and happy! Red is lucky in Chinese culture and it always reminds her of times like New Year’s! Also, it is the color of passion and love. Blues she likes because they are calming and gentle.  These are her lucky colors. She also loves pink, even though it is technically a color that she should avoid. Really hates white, because she doesn’t like what a blank slate it is. Also, hates brown because it is an icky boring color. As you can see, she has a lot of Opinions on colors. Clothing —Chic and trendy, lots of colors and patterns. Jewelry — Loves it! Wears mostly gold. Probably has a few staple pieces but then exchanges things depending on her mood. Websites — Tumblr, Instagram, Twitter etc etc TV Shows — CW shows and K/Cdramas Movies — All the great love classics: Gone with the Wind, the Titanic, When Harry Met Sally, Roman Holiday, all of Audrey Hepburn probably, the Notebook, Singing in the Rain…I could go on and on. She loves movies that tug at the heart strings and are full of that wild, amazing, passionate kind of love. They always make her swoon and if she is choosing a movie for movie night, you know it’s gonna be a romantic tearjerker. Though, she also likes romcoms. Doesn’t like action movies or horror movies or anything too intense, they freak her out Greatest Want — To figure out what to do with her life. Greatest Need — To grow up and learn things aren’t all about her, lmao.
Where and How Does Your Character Live Now:
Home — A three bedroom apartment with Ting-Ting and Su. Household furnishings — Rather plain at the moment, but will probably grow cozy as they settle in. Favorite Possession — Her pseudogrimoire where she writes down all the signs and stuff that she sees and puzzles out the meaning to. Most Cherished Possession — Her wand, which is a fan that was her mother’s, her mother gave it to her and her father and Ting-Ting help her imbibe it with magic. Neighborhood — Tortuga Place Married Before — No Significant Other Before — Non-serious boyfriends and Serious crushes Children — She iS a child Relationship with Family — Very close with her dad, even though he’s always yelling at her and being disappointed in her. They have a lot in common and she loves him. Her and her mother also get along more or less, she’s less stringent than her dad. Ting-Ting and her probably have the most contentious relationship, but even that hasn’t been that bad really. Mostly Mei being a nosy, annoying little sister. It will get more intense now that Ting-Ting is the authority figure and Mei is pissed about their situation. Su and Mei get along more or less well, they annoy each other, as sisters are wont to do, but Mei would def consider Su one of her best friends. Car — None. Career — Student Dream Career — She doesn’t know !! Dream Life — Married, with children, though she doesn’t know what she wants out of a career. Love Life — Nonexistant, which pisses her off. Talents or Skills — Excellent gymnast and very good with her magic. Intelligence Level — Decently intelligent, has street smarts, tbh. Very sharp in conversation. Finances — Wealthy

Rolling Stone: Taylor Swift Reaches For New Heights of Personal and Musical Liberation on ‘Lover’
Her epic seventh album is all about big moods, dreamy Eighties throwbacks and evolutionary freedom
Tumblr media
By the time “It’s Nice to Have a Friend” arrives on Lover, her seventh and most epic album, Taylor Swift has entered uncharted territory. For one thing, it’s the 17th song here, and none of her previous albums have run more than 16 tracks. (Lover actually contains 18.) More importantly, it’s not about being 16 or 22 or even her not-insignificant current age, 29. It’s about being six or seven, and walking home from school in the snow: “Lost my gloves / You give me one / Wanna hang out? / Sounds like fun.” There’s no beat, no banjo, no metaphors or coded messages. There is, instead, deconstructed steel drum, horn and cooing voices — Animal Collective as interpreted by hip-hop-savvy pop-producers-of-the-moment Louis Bell and Frank Dukes, the song’s co-writers. It’s like the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey, where a long turbulent journey through outer (and, naturally, inner) space culminates in the sudden appearance of a planet-sized fetus. For two and a half minutes, Swift regresses past all the drama and heartache she’s cataloged since her teen years to curl up in a weird little pocket of beauty. Swift has always been vulnerable, of course. And just as obviously, that vulnerability has been her strength. Female pop stars since Madonna have been expected to constantly reinvent themselves, lest it seem like they’re aging — an impossible standard that vexed Swift contemporaries like Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. In sharing her actual feelings about relationships chronicled by the tabloids — and parrying the entire internet’s judgements of those feelings — Swift helped open up a space for Ariana Grande to directly address Sean, Pete, and Malcolm on “Thank U, Next” (to name one glorious example). When Swift went pop, that wasn’t so much a transformation as an annexation of new territory. Grande might’ve picked up something here, too, with her triumphant embrace of hip-hop-style surprise drops. If Ariana, Billie, Halsey and others seem so effortlessly themselves, it’s in part because Swift worked so hard at speaking her truth and smiting her enemies. Lover is, fittingly, evolutionary rather than revolutionary. But nevertheless it feels like an epiphany: free and unhurried, governed by no one concept or outlook, it represents Swift at her most liberated, enjoying a bit of the freedom she won for her cohort. Made mainly in collaboration with Jack Antonoff, female songwriting ally nonpareil, the album’s dominant sound is sleekly updated Eighties pop-rock. In a bonus making-of track destined for a Target edition of the album, Swift tells Antonoff she wants a “dreamy guitar-y throwback, but not camp throwback” sound for the title track, and that’s pretty much the vibe. (Think recent Carly Rae Jepsen, if she made actual hits.) Swift loads “Paper Rings” up with a “1-2-3-4,” a “hey! ho!” and a key change for a jittery bit of Cars-meets-Eddie Money-meets-Go-Go’s delight. On the terrific “Cruel Summer,” written with Antonoff and Annie Clark (a.k.a. St. Vincent), she tells a simple tale of tortured love in under three minutes of pure pleasure, with what sounds like a smattering of talk box. When she sings “Out the window / I’m always waiting for you to be waiting below,” there’s no question you’re supposed to picture John Cusack in Say Anything.
Swift adjusts her frame of reference as needed. She claims to be “In my feelings more than Drake” in “I Forgot That You Existed,” a pro forma, post-trop-house declaration of her “indifference” to the haters. Thankfully, that’s mainly it for the sassy, winking Swift. Instead, she mostly goes for the big moods. “False God” is as minor-key and seductive as anything by the Weeknd, with a chorus, well — I’ll just leave this here: “Religion’s on your lips / Even if it’s a false god / We’d still worship / We must just get away with it / The altar is my hips.” She zags into oblique political commentary with “Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince,” a high school parable where she sees “high fives between bad guys” and delivers “O! K!” interjections in her best cheerleader voice. Like Euphoria, the HBO teensploitation extravaganza, it’s dark, melodramatic and, against all odds, perfect.
There’s plenty more fodder for the Swifties, haters, and bloggers here. Leo takes a proverbial volleyball to the face on “The Man,” a usefully blunt indictment of double standards, and the dub-inflected “London Boy” counts all the ways she “fancies” her boyfriend Joe Alwyn. “Soon You’ll Get Better” was recorded with Dixie Chicks, but giving the country-radio exiles a feature isn’t the point — the song is note-perfect ballad for Swift’s mother, whose cancer returned earlier this year. Whatever there is to be read into these songs, they are for one person and one person alone: Taylor Swift. Finally.

new updated playlist for fáelán because she’s a more dimensional character in my mind, and as such her playlist needed to reflect that! see below the cut for me gushing about the organization for this playlist, or just listen to listen 🥰🥰
Act I. Home
Her relationship with her home – the Pallid Grove, the place she was born and came from – is changing as she’s discovering more things about it. As it is, we the players and Fáelán the character, don’t know a whole lot about it. So it’s shrouded with mystery, even as she’s getting hints and memories unlocked with the help of the Luxon, and I wanted to secure that just...slightly “off” feeling of the Pallid Grove. It’s the sight of such horrible divine influence – both positive and negative – and the people inside haven’t left for hundreds of years in the aftermath that it has this almost...closed door, on the inside looking out feeling to it. Is that from fear? Safety? Community? Paranoia? I wanted to explore that.
Big Houses – Squalloscope
“In the circle around the kitchen table/I say my "amen" because I feel blessed/Secretly hoping while joining hands that you can't feel my trembling fingertips”
This too Shall Pass – Danny Schmidt
“But deep inside/When every cell divides/Well, it sets upon the rule that states/Self-interest is divine”
Liability – Lorde
“You're all gonna watch me/Disappear into the sun”
Shrike - Hozier
“Remember me love, when I'm reborn/As the shrike to your sharp and glorious thorn”
Act II. Selection Side A (Luxon Love Letters)
At some point in her life in the Pallid Grove, Fáelán starts getting this pull from the Luxon. It leads her to Rosohna, but before that there’s an indeterminate amount of time that passes between when she left the Pallid Grove and when she arrived in Rosohna. This movement is dedicated to that journey, the part of her life that she doesn’t have any memory of, because somehow all alone she crossed the entire Wildemount continent and had absolutely no idea how she did so. It’s important to note that neither do I, the player! It’s a complete mystery. But the only thing she remembers from that time is the incessant need to be near the Luxon, and that was her only driving force. So while some of these are “love” songs, they’re also songs to the Luxon. It’s those conversations with this entity that’s pulling her closer, from the weariness of a long travel (1000 Nights) to the doubt cast by not getting a ton of answers (Games), that remain with her even now.
1000 Nights - FRENSHIP
“There's a bulletproof bond/Between meaning and you”
Heaven/Hell - CHVRCHES
“If none of this is real, then show me what you feel/'Cause I can't tell”
Games – Tessa Violet
“And I long to take you at your word, but then/All along you're hiding even when you're by my side”
It’s You – Ali Gatie
“I'm hurting inside/I'm so scared to fall in love/But if it's you then I'll try”
Act III. Arrival
This encapsulates really the most recent ~50 years of her life, about how much she remembers after her journey. In these brief songs, we see how different she is from her old “home”, her old space of the Pallid Grove. Things are different, she has a higher energy now, she’s in a place where she has her new mom and her new brother and the Luxon. With that connection satisfied, she feels like she can take on the world! In a lot of ways, this is the highest energy of the movements, because she’s feeling. Feeling both good and bad things, but she’s alive and she’s feeling and her powers have begun to manifest the more she devotes herself to the Luxon and the Lucid Bastion and the Dynasty in general.
Up To Something - Naaz
“Don't want to hurt them/But this is who I am/Chasing ambitions/Making my own mistakes”
Capsize - FRENSHIP
“Drop tears in the morning/Give in to the lonely”
When You Were Young - The Killers
“You sit there in your heartache/Waiting on some beautiful boy to/To save you from your old ways”
Wild Things - Alessia Cara
“I lose my balance on these eggshells/You tell me to tread, I'd rather be a wild one instead”
Act IV. Selection Side B (Conscription)
Obviously, she can’t remain in the temple forever. And as tensions rise with the Empire, she gets selected to join the Xhorsquad party, by the Taskhand himself. In obvious ways, this is another way that the Luxon has chosen her to represent something that it believes in, and also another way for her to serve her Dynasty. But it’s dark and scary and far from the comforts of home. She doubted herself a lot, doubted her abilities and her place in the team and her morals when surrounded by people who have definitely killed before in their lives while she’s lived in the Lucid Bastion.
The Sound of Silence - Pentatonix
“And in the naked light I saw/Ten thousand people, maybe more...And no one dared/Disturb the sound of silence”
Only If For A Night - Florence + The Machine
“And the only solution was to stand and fight/And my body was bruised and I was set alight/But you came over me like some holy rite/And although I was burning, you're the only light”
Shake It Out - Florence + The Machine
“And I'm ready to suffer and I'm ready to hope/It's a shot in the dark and right at my throat”
Freaking Out - A R I Z O N A
“It's stupid, but I'm better off and I'll stay quiet/'Cause I pushed away all the ones that hold me close”
Act V. (Dis)Connection
The most current act, the one she’s playing out right now. She’s beginning to emotionally connect and respond to the people around her, and beginning to understand that not everyone you spend a lot of time around is going to be exactly like you. But she’s still privileging the needs of others above the emotional needs of herself, with some small exceptions. Recently she’s let in Tanvir and Bird, two of the three that she feels closest to, and they know more about her than other party members. And after they began the process for consecution, she now feels even closer to Tanvir. They were the only two to leave the Heart in tears, after all. But, as she’s used to being the person who channels the Luxon to help others in need, she’s trying to keep her own emotions at bay. How that will work out, we’ve yet to see! But as indicated by those final two songs...she’s going to have to talk about it sooner rather than later.
Saturdays (feat. HAIM) - Twin Shadow, HAIM
“When we dance in the dark in the room where it all gets real/I know you know how it feels/Saturdays/When the moonlight hit up your face and let love spark”
Too Much - Carly Rae Jepsen
“Trust the, trust the feeling/It's hard to get to know you/But I'm down”
Someone New - Hozier
“I wake, at the first cringe of morning/And my heart's already sinned/How pure, how sweet the love beneath it yeah/You would pray for him”
Crush - Tessa Violet
“I wanna touch you but don't wanna be weird/It's such a rush, I'm thinking wish you were here”

Penny is canonically a Pisces! I kind of see Scorpio for Eliot but I have a hard time squaring a Scorpio's obsessiveness and the inclination for vengeance with him...honestly Alice fits that better I think. Julia's birthday is in the pilot so she's probably either a Scorpio, Sagittarius, or Capricorn.
other anon asked: A very important question: has Magicians fandom ever discussed zodiac placements?
(merging these two for Zodiac Pondering Time)
magicians zodiac is interesting, i feel like there’s a lot of characters where i could go in a couple different directions! let’s do this by character, in rough order from more to less attached to my zodiac headcanon, lol:
josh: taurus! almost too easy except that it fits. loves food & other sensual delights, a gifted naturalist and so connected to the earth, soil, planting, growing things, springtime, etc. also he just has a taurus… vibe. you know? taurus is my secret favorite sign because i kind of think of them as like capricorn’s less Unhinged better-adjusted younger sibling and anecdotally i just tend to feel very safe around tauruses in the world, i don’t know why! there’s a peaceableness… a simplicity but in a good way… josh drinking beer with eliot is very in this mold imo!
julia: for zodiac concepts i mostly consider canon birthdays like, helpful suggestions, although often they DO wind up feeling right… for example, i absolutely consider julia a capricorn. this is a little bit because she is my baby and i am a capricorn, but mostly it is because of every single thing she ever does. surveying one’s options and choosing the most Extra choice possible, and doing so with a vibe like you don’t even know that that’s what you’re doing? capricorn antics. dismantling a magical battery simply by hurling your body at it over and over until it caves to the sheer force of your will, while someone looks on wondering why you seem to lack the human instinct for self-preservation? capricorn antics. “i don’t really do slow”? capricorn antics. giving a pep talk about your friendship that ends with “tighten your shit”? capricorn antics. the extent to which she is impossible to insult or intimidate because she is so comfortably self-contained, very capricorn. the best thing i have ever read about capricorns is this hairpin (rip) piece called Astrology Is Fake, But Capricorns Are A Conspiracy, about how goats seem like normal critters until you look at their fucked up square pupils and then realize that they are interacting with the world in a fundamentally different way from everyone else and also have no idea that there is anything weird about what they’re doing. like...
This is the heart of the Capricorn mystery, the secret that has been kept so quiet for all these years. They seem so normal, so predictable, but they are looking at through the world through effing rectangular pupils, different from all the other kinds of pupils in this world, and they don’t even know. Only I know. And now you.
Ask a Sagittarius why they did something weird and they will say that they thought it was funny. Ask a Cancer the same question, and they will look you square in the eye and tell you that it’s because they are nuts. Ask a Capricorn, though, and they will just look at you blankly. What do you mean, weird? I don’t do weird stuff, because I am a Capricorn and that is not our way — it says so right there in the literature. What do you mean, “rectangular pupils”? No other sign has such a vested interest in thinking of themselves as rational, organised, and so on. You can’t tell a Capricorn that they have done something which exceeds the limits of what is considered reasonable. They are the appointed guardians of what is reasonable. This doesn’t make them any less nuts, though.
this is julia! simultaneously the most normie-passing member of the cast, and also the most unhinged, but in a very calm, emotionally unbothered way. alright. case made. moving on.
margo: another one that feels almost too easy, but, like, yeah, leo. royalty, glamor, ferocity, potency, naturally and comfortably the center of attention, charismatic, protective, throws a great party, fights for those she loves, loyal, etc. again, feels almost too on the nose! and doesn’t quite get at her cold, machiavellian side. but also, if the glittering stiletto fits....
alice: things are getting trickier here! my instinct for alice is aquarius because her niffin self is driven by the quest for knowledge, and because she has that like, fixed-sign rigidity, and also she is a total freak and extremely alienated from, like, all of humanity. (one of my BFFs is an aquarius so i say this with love.) but i would be open to a reading that gives more weight to her neuroticism (virgo?) or her deep wells of rage and pain (leo? scorpio?)
kady: a little tricky mostly just because of how uninterested the show is in acting like she is a real person. the gimme here is aries - “no one else hits that hard,” resident battle magic expert. but despite being introduced as the brakebills thief, kady’s biggest storylines are all about her loyalty: to her mother, to julia, to penny, to the hedge community, such as it is. not a trait strongly associated with the baby of the zodiac. is she also a leo? are she and julia a capricorn power couple? (taking on the role of like Honorary Hedge President is not... not capricorn antics)
quentin: i swear to god when i was first thinking about this, i was like, “quentin is a cancer,” and then i was like, “you can’t just make quentin a cancer because cancers and water signs in general are wildly overrated in your historical fandom interests, just because steve rogers is a cancer doesn’t mean quentin is a cancer,” and then i found out there’s some (semi?)-official info that places him as a cancer... there is a part of me that continues to resist because of his intellectual side, because of the particular mechanisms of his escapist tendencies, but. has a lot of feelings, at his happiest living in cozy domestic contentment with someone he loves, eager for partnership, easily wounded, capable of being the sweetest darling on the planet and also a huge, terrible asshole........ fine. okay. cancer. as a bonus, this means that he and julia are sister signs, which is pretty cute.
penny: i can see pisces for penny! i like scorpio because of the underworld connection, ruled by pluto, etc., also because the astrology book i have says that the life purpose of scorpio is to be “a true, irritating healer” which is an amazing phrase and very penny, but pisces works in terms of like, liminality, the porousness between realms, psychic phenomena, his association with dreams... plus of course his big heart, deep wells of compassion. pisces doesn’t really capture his prickliness, but i actually also thing the scorpio-vengeance thing applies to him less than it does to eliot - penny is constantly annoyed but he pretty rarely gets really angry or acts out on his anger. his huge inner softness and the fact that he’s like secretly the most caring person in the cast makes me think water sign and i could see either of those... but wouldn’t it be funny if he and quentin were both cancers and that’s why they can’t stand each other? would add even more to my whole Thing about how writing penny-40 out how they did was a huge lost opportunity for quentin and penny’s characterization as shaped by their gradual peace-making towards each other. but then again he is also absurdly impulsive... maybe he’s an aries! or a sagittarius? i am uncommitted.
eliot: ELIOT IS THE HARDEST ONE!!! the scorpio thing, i feel like eliot is so secrets on secrets, you know? he’s an exhibitionist but also extremely private about his actual heart. carly rae jepsen our SCORPIO PRINCESS writes “i’ve got a cavern of secrets / none of them are for you / even if you wanted to keep them, where would you find the room?”... very eliot. and i do see what you’re saying particularly about the scorpio obsessiveness/intensity - eliot for all his feelings and Extra-ness is actually one of the... less intense people on this show about 24-year-olds having a group nervous breakdown? but he did (1) kill a kid with a bus (2) immediately kill beast-mike which was like obviously strategically justified since the beast wasn’t gonna give mike up but also pretty obviously the hurt that propelled the spell (since eliot was not trained in battle magic at the time) came less from a rational consideration of the situation and more from his since of betrayal at having opened his intimate vulnerable self to someone under false pretenses (3) throw margo in the dungeon. obviously eliot is my child who has never done anything wrong in his LIFE and i hold none of this against him, but for all his softness when he really thinks he’s been crossed shit can get pretty real pretty fast. not to mention whatever the hell “if you want to live your life live it here” was about.
but!!! he is also so soft!!! i mean, shit, maybe eliot is the pisces? intuitive, Deeply Sad, gentle, with an easily bruised but never closed heart the size of the ocean? but then i also feel like aesthetics are sooooo important to him... i thought about libra, for the combination of aesthetic vision and interest in justice (all his thinking about what kind of kingdom he wants to rule, very different from margo’s immediate focus on making sure they stay in charge and alive). he’s got the libra elegance and charm, and of course his status as consummate host is very libra. (did you know f. scott fitzgerald, author of the great gatsby a book about parties and charm which is also one of the most famously symmetrically structured novels in american literature, is a triple libra? if you ever needed proof that astrology was real...) but eliot is SO driven by his heart, it’s hard to square an air sign with that! in my wip i have him as a scorpio with moon in sagittarius but maybe i should switch those... eliot obviously doesn’t have sagittarius’s optimism but like you can see how he might have in a different life (and/or without a scorpio moon), right? as opposed to quentin who very obviously was always going to be Like That... there’s a lightness to eliot in his better moments, this really lovely capacity for joy... and there’s a lightness to him in his worst moments, which is very sag! can get angry but doesn’t dig into it the way margo does. not Book Curious but very into Seeing The World, gathering experiences. hmmmm. maybe i’ve talked myself into sagittarius eliot! but then again where are his Enormous Feelings? IT’S TOUGH. eliot brings out my You Have To Look At The Whole Chart tendencies!!!!!

Dedicated Emotions: Logan (Part IV)
PART I | PART 2 | PART 3 | PART 4
Pairing: Ride or Die | Ellie x Logan  Summary: An imagining of what happened months after RoD1 where it’s only them and the open road.    (This is an accompaniment to the Colt Series with the same title, you don’t need to read the other series to understand this series don’t worry!)  Word Count: 305 (story alone) 969 (w/ creative process note) Warnings: None
Tumblr media
Ellie opens the car window and let’s the wind whip around her hair, her heart heavy with relief. She turns to him, her eyes flitting down to their intertwined hands—hers on top of his—on the gear shift before her eyes flit back to his face.
He looks so happy, so free, so in love and she wonders if that’s the same expression she wears now. Perhaps yes but hers might have the added bonus of puffy eyes and smeared makeup but it doesn’t matter. The circumstances never mattered when she’s with him.
She squeezes his hand and a smile tugs on his lips, his eyes softening, before he sighs in bliss.
“Logan?”
He glances at her, raising an eyebrow to signal for her to continue, before he turns back to the road.
She has so many things to say, so many things to ask.
She wants to dig up the last time they saw each other, give him the apology he deserves.
But she already knows his answer.
She wants to talk about his one year away from her, give him the reassurance he deserves.
But she already knows his answer.
So she settles on the one thing she has yet to say to him since their reunion, the thing that can bundle all of her self that he possess since the time she was the girl undercover and he was the boy with the getaway.
“I love you.”
He chuckles, his eyes wide with wonder and shock. He knows it but it’s still a breath of air when he hears the words.  His eyes are misty, his heart squeezing in the knowledge that these are the better days.
So he looks forward, far beyond whatever his eyes can reach, at the open road finally before him.
“I love you too Ellie.”

Creative Process Note: *This is the same write up for the Colt Series. Slight spoiler warnings for the other series.
Thank you so much if you’ve reached this far into the story! If you’re not interested in how the series started and what the steps it took to get here—then you can stop here. I just really want to share this because this isn’t how I normally write and it takes a conscious effort on my part to write with this style (I love writing this way but a 1k story will take me hours) so I thought somebody might be interested in it.
But of course, you don’t need to read the rest of this so thank you for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed the stories as much as it was a joy (and pain lol) to write them!
I’m really happy that I got to write for Colt and Logan. Colt is a fun and interesting character to write but definitely a challenging one and I hope I did him justice. Compared to Logan where my heart physically hurts to write him in any scene other than happy and loved because I want only the best things for my sweet boi.
Eagle-eyed readers might notice that I’ve used six of Carly Rae Jepsen’s songs from three different albums. Some of the lines of the songs are peppered in the dialogues and descriptions in the story (can you spot them all?). The songs are as follows:
For Logan: Run Away With Me (Emotion) Automatically In Love (Dedicated) Felt This Way (Dedicated Side B)
For Colt: Making the Most of the Night (Emotion) Right Words Wrong Time (Dedicated) Stay Away (Dedicated Side B)
For both series, I intended it to be a contrast between the fire and the almost heart-pounding edge to Colt in comparison to Logan who is more water and softer around the edges. I tried (and hopefully succeeded lol) in varying my writing styles for both stories to reflect that. While Colt’s story is more dire, angsty, and has a tight dialogue—Logan is more wistful, bittersweet and has a loose dialogue. That’s why both story’s more or less start out the same way, a job gone wrong, to set their journey in parallels.
And of course I’m going to end it with a happy ending, I’m not a monster.
I got the idea from Carly’s “Stay Away” and “Felt This Way” songs where it’s essentially the same lyrics but the genres are completely different (seriously, it’s amazing!) and so I thought—hey I could use that for RoDAW! And that’s where parallels with Colt and Logan came in.
Writing this also gave me the opportunity to focus on my imagery more and explore the ways I could play around with words (I’m sure you noticed my love for alliterations and repetitions). They’re very short pieces of writing but I wanted each chapter to capture a moment into their life where the theme of separation and coming home was the focal point. The afterward is just the indulgent shot of sugar needed after a full meal.
The biggest challenge had to be working out how to use the lines in the song and inserting them naturally into the story without altering them too much that it would be unrecognizable or sound awkward and stilted. I’m also not American so I tried to keep the details and scenery a little bit vague so I didn’t have to go into details that could be wrong and disrupt the immersion (google helps but only to a certain extent).
That’s about it.
Once again, thank you for reading this far and have a great day!

50 Wordless Ways to Say “I Love You” ➡ 11. Telling them a dumb joke just to see their smile. Pairing: YJ!Wally West x Reader Word Count: 1,848 words Warnings: None

There are only two things on your mind right now: one, the air conditioning is broken in the middle of June, and two, Wally looks very good in a tuxedo.
Both facts are almost impossible to ignore and finding a distraction is even more hopeless; after all, there’s not much a person can do inside a church, especially right before a wedding ceremony. Looking down your row is painfully boring – though you do stare enviously at the old lady who had the foresight to bring a fan, watching her flap a breeze toward her gleaming face.
I should’ve brought the mini fan from home.
As you lean back in your chair, cringing when your clothes stick to your sweaty back, Wally leans toward you.
“It’s so hot,” he whispers, tugging absently at the loop of his tie. It’s green – a lighter, more pastel green than his eyes – and you automatically pull his hand away for fear that you’ll have to fix it again.
“I know,” you murmur back, sharing his exasperated look. “We just … gotta wait for the reception and then we can stand in front of the fans.”
Wally groans. “That’s, like, an hour away, though. The bride isn’t even here yet.”
All you can do in reply is shrug slowly, examining the nervous groom waiting in the front. Your companion’s right; Cousin Addy’s probably getting the jitters in the back, and you only hope your aunt can calm her down before everyone here melts into a puddle. (Seriously, 365 days in a year and the gods of broken ACs choose the one when you’re crammed into a room with 150 other people.)
Something jabs you in the knee.
Looking down, your already sinking mood dives deeper when you see your little cousin peering up at you, her chubby hands rapidly poking dents into your leg. It takes everything in you to put a smile on your face.
“Hey, Lea,” you say. “What is it?”
“I’m bored,” the girl complains softly, bouncing up and down. “Come outside and play with me.”
Normally, you’d use Lea as an excuse to go outside during awkward family reunions; this time, though, staying underneath the shade of a roof seems like a safer option. You lean down to her level and tousle her hair. “I can’t. Your auntie’s coming soon and we have to wait, okay?”
“But I wanna play.”
“I know, but –”
“Pleeeeease –” Lea’s voice grows in volume and pitch.
She grabs your hand and pulls, but your palm is so sweaty that her fingers slip. For a split second, your heart stops as she careens toward the ground – but right before Lea falls flat on her face, Wally scoops her up.
“Whoa, kid,” he says, holding the kid underneath her arms like a cat, “be careful. You could’ve hurt yourself.”
“Leggo of me!”
Your cousin squirms, kicking her feet against Wally’s chest. The latter grunts in surprised pain, but with a deep breath, he only sets Lea down and smiles.
“Hey, Lea,” he starts, meeting your sympathetic expression before continuing. “You like jokes, right?”
The girl’s mouth is still set in a pout, but it cautiously unpuckers at Wally’s words. “Yeah.”
“I have a new one for you. What do you call a bear with no teeth?”
“… What?”
He grins and drops his voice conspiratorially. “A gummy bear.”
“Oh my god,” you mutter, covering the upturn of your lips when Wally glances at you proudly.
Lea giggles, shoulders scrunching up. “That’s not funny, Wally,” she exclaims, wrinkling her nose despite her laughter. “Say another one.”
“Okay. Uh … knock-knock.” Another giggle. “Who's there?” “Atch.” “I know this one!” Lea nearly shrieks, and you scramble to shush her when the couple across the aisle glares at the three of you. “You’re gonna make me say achoo.”
“Aw, man.” Wally knocks his head back dramatically, and you chuckle at the theatrics. “You’re too smart, Lea! I almost got y –”
The beginning notes of the processional song blast out from the organ, effectively interrupting him, and you quickly pick Lea up as the doors open for the bride. You’re a little jealous when she wriggles and moves over to sit on Wally’s knee.
Your aunt and Addy glide down the aisle, the former smiling at you as she walks past. Once they make it to the front, you lean over to whisper in Wally’s ear.
“She looks good,” you tell him, and he smirks.
“Almost as good as you, babe.”
His words earn him an elbow in his side, but all he does is snicker silently in return. You don’t say anything back for two reasons: one, the officiant is already speaking, and two, the sincerity in Wally’s voice makes you too flustered for words.
__
It takes about an hour, but Addy is a lot more relaxed by the time the dancing starts. You think it’s because of the wine. She and her new husband are cute, though, giggling left and right as they step on each other’s feet.
“You gotta go up and dance after they’re done, [Y/n].”
Wally speaks through a mouthful of buttered bread. You snort and shake your head, downing your sparkling apple juice in lieu of meeting the challenge in his eyes. “No way,” you say.
“Aw, come ooon.”
“Your tie’s going to fall into your food.”
“You’re trying to change the subject.” (Nevertheless, he still looks down and finagles with his tie when he sees that it is, in fact, dangerously close to his mashed potatoes.) “… Let’s do it. I know you want to bop whenever a good song comes on.”
Your cheeks warm. “I don’t ‘bop,’” you mumble. “I don’t – why are you looking at me like that, Wally?”
Wally grins mischievously. “Because I really wanna dance with you right now, and you can’t say no to Wally West. Or Carly Rae Jepsen.”
“Minus the Carly Rae Jepsen part, you sound like every stereotypical high school jock ever.”
“Oh.”
Call Me Maybe starts blasting through the speakers.
“… One song.”
You give in pretty quickly – you’re not exactly surprised that you do – and Wally’s smile comes back full force. Stuffing the rest of his dinner down his throat, Wally throws his napkin onto his plate and makes his way behind you to wait; you feel his chin bump against the top of your head as he leans over the back of your chair. “Sweet! Hurry up, [Y/n] – everyone’s beat us to the floor already.”
After you’re done rolling your eyes, you reach up to push Wally’s head off yours and finish the last of your drink. “Alright, alright. I’m coming.”
While you let your date (well, he’s technically just your plus one) pull you towards the center of the room, his fingers curled tightly around your hand, your initial reluctance starts to wane. What can you say, really? The one other power Wally has besides running in circles is the ability to make you do the most embarrassing things – not that dancing in a room full of your relatives is the highest item on the list, but it’s pretty up there. His antics would infuriate you if you didn’t enjoy every wild second of them.
“Hey,” you tap his shoulder and he spins around to face you, eyes bright. “I forgot to say thanks for dealing with Lea earlier.”
He shrugs. “No problem.”
“Those jokes were terrible, though.”
An offended sound escapes Wally, and he gives you the most insulted look you’ve ever seen. “Excuse me? Those were amazing jokes –” you raise an eyebrow, “well, yeah, they were kinda bad. But, like, in a funny way. You laughed.”
“Only because I felt bad for you.”
“[Y/n].” Your name tapers off into a sort of whine, but he gets over it quickly and puts an arm around your shoulders while people bump past on the dance floor. “Just so you know, I have loads more if you want to hear them – and I know you do.”
“Fine. Hit me.”
“Okay, I will.” He starts dancing as he speaks, and he’s not very good, but it’s cute nonetheless. You find yourself nodding along to the beat. “So a cement mixer and a prison bus crashed on the highway. The police tell the citizens to look out for a group of hardened criminals.”
“Wow.” You can feel the corner of your mouth twitch.
“What? C’mon, that was pretty good. Okay – uh, how are a green apple and a red apple similar?”
“They’re both apples.”
Wally squints at you. “No, [Y/n]. They’re both red except for the green one.”
Snrk. You cover what’s definitely a smile behind your hand, and triumph ripples across Wally’s face when he catches a glimpse of it. “Nope. Not it, man. Mm-mm.”
“Bruh, you just smiled! Fine, wait, I got one more. A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel on his pants, okay, and a peg leg and a parrot on his shoulder. And the bartender says, ‘Hey, you’ve got a steering wheel on your pants.’”
“… Okay.” Yeah, there’s no point in pretending you’re not grinning now.
“And the pirate says,” Wally’s face scrunches as he tries to stifle his snickers, “h-he says, ‘Arrrr, I know. It’s driving me nuts!’”
You burst out laughing. As Wally joins you, gasping for breath, you find the strength to smack his shoulder.
“Dude, that’s so bad, oh my god,” you snort. “Where the hell’d you hear that?”
“Uncle Barry.”
“Geez.” There’re actual tears in your eyes. To the side, one of the other guests looks at you funny, but you don’t feel self-conscious at all. “I forgot it runs in the family.” “A lot of smack talk for someone who likes my jokes,” he shoots back smugly.
You stick your tongue out at him, because it’s true. “Fine, they’re funny. We both have bad senses of humor.”
“That’s all I wanted to hear.”
And that’s all he has to say for a moment after that. For the first time since the two of you started dancing, you notice the song change. Slight dread shoots straight up your spine when the tempo slows to a crawl, and the little kids stop jumping around in confusion as couples begin to pair up in droves.
“I guess the fun’s over,” you say, turning back to Wally when Elvis Presley’s deep, crooning voice seeps out from the speakers.
But Wally just shrugs.
“It doesn’t have to be.”
He holds out his hand. You pause and look down at it; the lights dance across his skin like blue fireflies, coaxing you to reach out and accept his offer. Once you glance back up, his expression holds a question that he soon voices aloud.
“May I have this dance?”
You don’t even think about what to say. Taking your hand in his, you nod graciously. “You may, Wallace.”
He makes a face as the two of you twirl around. “Euch. That sounds super weird when you say it.”
“Just joking around, Sneakers.”
“Yeah, that’s better.”
__
“Heh. Driving me nuts.”
“Pfft.”

GALA 4 TOP 3
Here is last week top 3!
Oh boy.... This gala was... Intense. Especially the nominations. Oh boy the nominations. Why all my obsessions have to make me suffer so much.
Either way, here are my honorable mentions:
Bad Girls - Nia and Bruno: For some reason I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, I don’t honestly know why. That doesn’t mean it was a bad performance, it’s easily my top 4 of the gala, and Nia, again, slayed, for me she is the winner of this edition, calling it. At least, that’s what she deserve. Also Bruno, he has done pretty solid performances in all of the galas and he’s super underrated. Really really good both of them.
Amor Eterno - Javy and Anaju: I honestly liked this performance. Their voices sounded really good together, and it was emotional, just as they intended. It wasn’t the best performance of the night, sure, but. It wasn’t bad enough for they to NOMINATE BOTH???? Both?? And now next week one of them is going to be expulsed, even though for many people, including me, they were both finalists. And the fact that they nominated both of them, but none of the “princesses”.... Not over it (btw salvar Anaju).
3. DINAMITA - MAIALEN:
youtube
Here is the original version, by La Bien Querida :)
She was one of the nominees, and she did it so good, even though Manu said in the Gala Review she was not that great. Thankfully she was saved! She was so powerful, so focused, so serious in this performance, it kinda gave me chills. She was amazing. Also, the suit she has on is the suit she dresses in her concerts, where she adopts her alter ego, Chica Sobresalto (”Fright Girl”) which, in her words, “is just her, but brave”. This girl is a national treasure istg.
2. CALL ME MAYBE - FLAVIO AND SAMANTHA:
youtube
Here is the original version, by Carly Rae Jepsen, I don’t know what is the version they use as a base for this cover though :)
Again, Flavio’s facial expressions are so hilarious to me, I don’t know why. And Samantha was so good, worthy of being the favorite that night, she deserved every bit of it. And although the song was made for Flavio, he had even sung it before, Samantha was outright better than him, it was amazing. They both sounded really good, and their voices match up so beautifully, it was a really really fun performance.
1. WICKED GAME - GÈRARD AND ANNE:
youtube
Here is the original version of the song, by Chris Isaak :)
Where to start with this performance holy shit. I’m calling it, for now it’s my favourite performance of the edition. For sure. Like wow. And, obviously, this wasn’t their best pass, my personal favourite was this one, where they sung without the guitar and just looking at each other. It wasn’t in a class or anything, that’s why is so short and from Twitter but whatever. This was the first song from this edition that made my heart pound, and they were so true, so beautiful, just amazing.
Having said that, let’s talk about the video™. In case you didn’t watch the gala, before they sung, they showed them a video in which Gèrard was composing a song (that was clearly about Anne but whatever) and in the end he sung it to Anne, and they kissed. They showed them kissing. I have to say, this kiss wasn’t show in the 24h over in livestream, no one knew this. But, they decided to out them. Like... can you imagine how they fucking felt, giving they both are really shy and already hard on themselves? They were appalled. And I was so fucking angry. Like, we all knew they were together, because it was very obvious, and they are cute as shit together, I’m the first who ships them. BUT. That’s no excuse to show them kissing on TV so everybody can see. Fuck whoever decided that, really. They could’ve done it horrible after that happened, but instead, they did THAT, so I’m so proud of them. For some fucking reason they nominated, again, Anne, this time because she didn’t sing a note that she wasn’t asked to do in the first place, so fuck the jury, thankfully she was saved by the teachers. I thought after all of that they would fall apart, but thankfully they are still cute as shit, Anne even composed a song about Gèrard, so everything seems fine.
Anyways, that was all. As you can see, it was a tough gala. For me, not as good as the previous one tbh, and way more suffering inducing for sure. At least it’s done. Let’s see next gala, I’m liking most of the songs so let’s see how it goes, for now I’m rooting for Gèrard this week cause he has a Pablo Alborán song, I have no option but to stan.
And about the nominees, as I said earlier, both of them were some of my finalists, and Javy is a great composer, singer, and person, and he shouldn’t have to leave the program this early, but Anaju is one of my faves and I can’t let her leave so early. Also, Javy has his single (which is the song he’ll sing in the gala!) so at least the expulsion will be a bit more bittersweet, instead of just bitter.
Let me think what you thought!

2019
The last day of 2019 was also the day I fainted for the first time--a fitting metaphor for the year.
2019 was overall very emotionally taxing. This year was emotionally defined by falling intensely, deeply in love with someone (who is a very private person so I will try to be vague to respect that) and being in a lot of pain because of situations mostly outside of our control. There were a lot of intensely joyous moments, and a lot of intensely sad ones. Throughout it all I wish I had communicated better. I also made some bad decisions with another person I really loved and cared about that resulted in us growing apart. Do I think I grew from the experiences? For sure. Do I wish I could have come upon these realizations through a different course of action? Also yes. Am I fully healed from the experiences? Not really, but I've been getting better.
2019 was also very bad in terms of research. It was the 2nd year of my PhD. After I submitted my rotation project I basically felt stuck in the swamp of my advisors rejecting new project ideas for like literally half a year. This, combined with my high emotional volatility (partially due to starting birth control), made me really sad, unmotivated, and susceptible to self-blame. I definitely had high expectations for myself and became frustrated at my lack of progress and felt a lot of pressure from myself to get my shit together. I also felt incredibly bad after most advisor meetings and not supported by one of them to the point where I had to have a conversation with him about the lack of support (which was very scary)! Things started picking up, though, near the end of the year. I published a paper in collaboration with a former post-doc/now professor elsewhere whom I learned a lot from, and started finally building out another system. I also started mentoring an undergrad who at some point told me I helped him feel like he had something important to say and belong at Stanford for the first time and those words meant a lot to me. I think I'm continuing to refine what I value as research contributions and increasingly think about what it means to build systems that aren't used outside of the lab to satisfy the annual conference publishing cycle. I'm also starting to feel the pressure of doing work that follows a narrative rather than random projects that interest me.
Oh, I guess in terms of "program requirements," I did finish taking required classes, passed qualifying exams, and got a master's degree. But honestly those weren't hard at all nor do I think are externally valued in the larger research community, so I don't really celebrate them as accomplishments beyond surface level.
In 2019 I saw two different therapists. The first one was awful, I think directly influenced some of my bad decisions, and also didn't respect my gender identity??? The second one is a lot better and I'm grateful to see her, even if 90% of our sessions are just talking about my relationship (romantic/advisor) issues, which is something I want to move away from in the future. But I also feel incredibly privileged when relationship issues are the primary stressors in my life--I am grateful I feel equipped to handle other crap, like deadlines, and don't have to worry about my own health.
Those were the main things that have colored this year. We'll now move into the section of this post where I go through my photos to jog my memory of other events.
New years started a tradition of getting dim sum with Jasper, Matthew, and Michelle dear to my heart. My high school friend was also visiting and we all attended a really awesome new year's eve party. I was also going on a lot of dates and having a lot of good sex, which made me really happy, and at the same time crying all the time at work. In February I received probably the best gift anyone has ever given me and saw Panic! at the Disco, which I said in an end of the year group meeting was a good memory of my year (it was, to relive my scene days!). In March I roadtripped both to Marin (which I had never to been before, despite all my years in the bay) and LA for Wondercon; it was nice to both see high school friends and go on a trip with the boo. In April I went on a hike with my office which was probably the start of us all becoming closer (we are the social office in the wing now, which I take pride in! Also we draw a lot of Pokemon which warms my heart). In May I went to CHI in Glasgow and then to Paris afterward, and the entire experience was very weird and bad and also too many flights were canceled and/or missed and I vowed to not return to Europe for a while, but man do I love the noodles at Trois Fois plus de Piment. In June we hosted a double apartment party with my downstairs neighbors (side note: I am really appreciative of the place I live in, for the community, convenience, and large-ass space and will be really sad to be kicked out fall 2020) and I started a friendship important to me. I cat-sat for my advisor (the one who doesn't make me feel bad) twice. I went to Redwood State Park with my family and hosted a summer solstice celebration. Over the summer a friend I met in Paris back in 2017 moved in with me. I had a much needed escape from the bay to Seattle where I was reminded how abundant the world can be. I also went to Tahoe to celebrate my parents' anniversary, and really liked stumbling upon a smaller lake with a cheap boat rental. Then I became FOMO about the highly competitive Bay Area camping and did a last minute walk-in at Redwood Basin in Santa Cruz, which made me realize that I don't actually love camping (but was nice nonetheless). I ate an expensive meal at Commonwealth before they closed. For my birthday we made a friendship quilt and I served my favorite dish of cumin lamb but it was also 90 degrees in my apartment (I felt really bad and bought two fans afterwards). I started buying many cartoon frog plush after being gifted a $3.99 on sale Safeway frog (called Baby!). I went on Tinder dates (one of which was at a quaker yard sale marketed as Harvest Festival where I got a 1970s Kermit puppet for like $2) that largely went nowhere. My high school friend visited and we were both sad about break ups. I did Inktober before I went to New Orleans for a conference on Bourbon St where everything felt like it was coated in a sticky film of alcohol. I almost missed my flight home because I fell asleep in a sculpture garden but I had the most amazing Uber driver who snaked his way through traffic (oh and the flight was delayed by like 3 hours). I went to kind of embarrassing haunted houses and pumpkin patches over Halloween, but also had the most incredible bowl of ramen at Mensho. My whole office dressed up as Zootopia characters which warmed my furry heart. I spent like $120 on a Pokemon shirt. I started playing Arkham Horror and rekindled another friendship important to me. In November went on a road trip to Big Sur because again, I had to escape it all. For Christmas Eve dinner I roasted a duck for the first time (which was delicious). Shortly after I waited in line for 2 hours for a rollercoaster at Great America, which taught me the value of buying a fast pass because at this point in my life that money is worth it, and then waited 2 hours in line at the DMV to get a RealID (I had made an appointment, which was the fast pass).
Okay, now we move to the hobby section!
I got really into sewing in 2019, having received a sewing machine last Christmas. I made a Judy Hopps (which I wore to CrunchyRoll Expo) and Korok cosplay (Fanime), several unsuccessful garments, a crab bean bag, a dice bag, a fanny pack, and put hearts nipples on a jumpsuit.
Shows! I think I went to way fewer shows this year. The ones I can remember are Elephant Gym, Thom Yorke the night before I had an 8am flight, Carly Rae Jepsen over pride weekend (also, she is my #1 artist of the year, which makes a lot of sense given my emotional space), Mitski at Stern Grove, Capitol Hill Bloc Party (which was super lame, except for Lizzo, where I cried), and the National (which was a fucking surreal experience as they played on Stanford's campus, I was the only one within earshot of myself who knew the words to Crybaby Geeks, and then the white catalog moms came up to me after to thank me for singing the song).
I also started playing my own music! I started playing viola again for the first time in 7 years (lol) in both pop-up concerts with the Awesome Orchestra (one in Golden Gate Park, one at the Exploratorium) and a string quartet through my school. Sometimes I am filled with joy and delight. Other times interpersonal tensions run high and also I am very bad at being in tune. It's life.
Media! I really liked Mob Psycho 100 Season 2 and Beastars. I feel like those were the only notable anime I watched this year? I saw the Farewell three times--first in Seattle where I sobbed for like 1 hour after the movie, the second time with my parents, and the third where Awkwafina was present for a Q&A. I thought Parasite was incredible and Promare was OK. I have spent an unfortunately large amount of my time playing Pokemon Masters. I finally beat BOTW and completed my Pokedex in Shield like 2 weeks after getting the game.
Resolutions! In my draft of my 2018 end of year post (which I never polished and posted, sorry), I said my resolutions were 1. come out to my parents 2. draw enough to table at an anime con 3. be disciplined about paper reading and have a doc. I did none of these things!!! However, for 1, I feel like I am well equipped to have this conversation but am waiting for my sibling to do it first out of respect. 2 was just bad. I barely drew this year except for gifts. 3 was okay--I did have a large doc in the beginning of the year when I was looking for ideas, but as time went on I abandoned it (I also stopped reading papers, which I don't think you're supposed to do as a grad student...)
My resolutions this year are phrased as intentions (-(c) Matthew). They span several categories. Relationships: I want to open myself to and actively seek experiences of love, because I miss that. That being said, I will only date someone if 1. they have their life together 2. they love themselves and 3. they challenge me to grow. (I do think you can experience love without dating; the thing I'm after is love in an expansive sense.) Work: I want to do enough work so I don't feel guilty about not doing enough work, and also not berate myself for taking a long time to do things. Hobbies: I want to sew at least one thing a month. Chinese: I want to improve my Chinese, especially pronunciation.
Having written this 20 days into 2020, it's not been so bad so far. But I was also really happy in the beginning of 2019. Here's to no global maxima, a monotonically increasing year!

Which is The Best €5 Wine?
Recently, in a Dublin apartment, much like your own, an elite group of wine tasting idiots were assembled. A diverse group of lesbians, brought together to answer the age old question: which is the best wine for in or around €5?
We wanted to consider the things that really matter when you buy a bottle of wine. Do you need to have a bottle opener? Do I have a bottle opener? Where did I leave my bottle opener? Is the bottle fancy? Does it have that metal foil on top that makes you feel all fancy?
Eagle eyed readers will notice that many of these wines in fact cost more than €5. This is because a €5 wine is less about the actual cost of the wine and more about a loose, fun energy. Our wines go between €4 and €8, but in the core of their being they are €5 wines.
You might also notice that this is not a complete list of €5 wines. We need your help. Next time you drink a €5 wine, do the community a service and put what you thought about it in here:

Have a wine party. It’s so much fun. I would thoroughly recommend it. You can see our original findings and your responses on here.

If need any advice or help with alcohol the National Drugs Helpline has both a freephone Helpline (1800 459 459) and an email support service ([email protected]).
Together, we created the following criteria to measure each wine:
Taste: The classic wine tasting experience. We’re talking floral, we’re talking fruity, we’re talking tannins. (Tannins are the thing that make your tongue go dry in the middle like when you drink a cup of tea).
Cork: Does this wine have a cork?
Snack Pairings: We painstakingly tasted each wine against classic snack pairings like Cheese and Onion Tayto, Olives, breadsticks and discount Lidl pringles.
X-Factor: Rated from 1 to 10, but with no sense of criteria or scale.
Chugability: In an emergency, could you finish this bottle?
Vibe: What is the vibe of this wine though?
Tumblr media
Wine No. 1: Conde Noble Vino Blanc, Lidl, €4, 11% ABV
Taste: REPEATED: The wine started well with fruit and citrus aromas. The flavor profile was a good balance of bitter and sour notes but unfortunately it did taste a little like bleach.
Cork? None cork.
Pairings: REPEATED: Do not pair with crisps or any other kind of starchy snack. Went well with olives, it probably needs a snack fancier than the wine. She has ideas above her station.
Chug? Yes
Vibe: booklaunchy
X-Factor: 5.5
Though she might try to act fancy, at the end of the day, she does cost €4.
Tumblr media
Wine No. 2: Aresti Sauvingnon Blanc, Supervalu, €7 (discounted from €11), 12.5% ABV
Taste: Mild sour apple aromas continue onto the palette. This flavor soon dries out though leaving a harsh astringent note. As is characteristic of all Sauvingnons, it does carry a certain MILF-ish quality.
Cork? Cork.
Pairings: Pairs excellently with all of the snacks. A real team player.
Chug? Absolutely Not
Vibe: lonely
X-Factor: 4
Even if she does pair well with all of the snacks, she lacked a certain magic quality, and didn’t taste good.
Tumblr media
Wine No. 3: Kooliburra Chardonnay, Aldi, €5, 12.5% ABV
Taste: A light summery wine she smells faintly of a flavored water but not in a bad way. The taste carries on this zesty energy with a pretty good floral finish.
Cork? No cork.
Pairings: This sweet summer gal is a good pairing for a salty snack but just couldn’t stand up to any more interesting flavors.
Chug? Yes
Vibe: I am a vagabond of the trees
X-Factor: 5.5
There is no denying the fact that there is a lizard on the front of this bottle. That is extremely good. If your phone had died you could get at least three minutes entertainment from looking at that little guy.
Tumblr media
Wine No. 4: Santa Helena White, Londis, €8, 10.55% ABV
Taste: A sweet and mild aroma leads to a peachy, richly perfumed palette. Apparently we didn’t have anything entertaining to say about this one.
Cork? No cork.
Pairings: It was just pretty bad all round. Drinking this with the discount pringles is a strong would-not-recommend.
Chug? Absolutely Not
Vibe: Garden Party, but I guess one with no food.
X-Factor: 6.5
An overall weak contender. She serves well as an example that sometimes paying that extra €3 is actually a fool’s game.
Tumblr media
Wine No. 5: The Wild Card: Bucks Fizz, Tesco, €2.80, 4% ABV
Taste: It tasted like oranges. It was super good
Cork? Fake plastic cork. Still get all the fun and attention of a cork, but with no need to own any utensils.
Pairings: The Bucks Fizz was a better pairing than you would think. She was strong enough to over power everything except the olives. Olives and Bucks Fizz together taste like a bad Hawaiian pizza.
Chug? Absolutely
Vibe: 100% pure celebration.
X-Factor: 10
The Carly Rae Jepsen of wines.
Tumblr media
Wine No. 6: Vineyard Shiraz, Tesco, €5, 13.5% ABV
Taste: It smelled rich and full bodied with just a hint of bins that should have gone out 2 days ago. The taste was bad.
Cork? Cork.
Pairings: When paired up with a starchy or a salty snack, this wine transforms and becomes a beverage we described as ‘bearable’.
Chug? Yes
Vibe: Trapped Underground
X-Factor: 3
You, like me, dear reader, might be tricked by the fact there is a kangaroo on the label. This wine is not fun, bouncy or feisty. It does not carry a smaller wine bottle inside a pouch.
Tumblr media
Wine No. 7: Azzara, Aldi, €4.99, 12% ABV
Taste: No smell off the wine, which was at first a little concerning. But, the taste was smooth, smokey and rich. A real genuine treat after that disaster zone from Tesco.
Cork? Cork.
Pairings: We had unfortunately run out of snacks at this point. The wine was real tasty though so I’m sure it would have been great.
Chug? Pretty solid
Vibe: Reviving Jazz
X-Factor: 9
Look at that fun design on the bottle. You just know you’re in for a treat with this one. She gives you everything you want in a red wine. She gives you warmth, she gives you comfort.
Tumblr media
Wine No. 8, Marquis de Leon Red, Tesco, €5, 11% ABV
Taste: Once the bottle is open it kind of smells like someone is drinking Kopparberg in another room. Strong winter energy with a rich mulled taste hiding cranberry and plum notes.
Cork? Cork.
Pairings: We still had no snacks
Chug? Too Rich
Vibe: Too good for Rivero, eh?
X-Factor: 6
You know what Marquis de Leon tastes like. She’s like a hug from an old school friend who just clocked you. She tastes like being stuck in a conversation with someone you’ve been introduced to, but now you’ve forgotten their name.
Conclusions
Tumblr media
As you can clearly see from this good graph I made, Aldi is the strongest competitor overall. Lidl, Londis and Supervalu all presented pretty decent showings, while Tesco was kind of all over the place.
The answer has been obvious this whole time though. Its Bucks Fizz. Think of any situation, now think about it with Bucks Fizz and it instantly becomes so much better. A party? A wake? A mediation? All better with that fizzy orange friend. The thing is, she’s been here for us this whole time. Every Christmas, who’s been waiting patiently for you? It’s Bucks Fizz. It’s always been Bucks Fizz.
