"Mike... I know what you are."
He's confused, just a second ago he was in Hopper's cabin having an important conversation with Will. Later, he remembers hearing the sound of a clock coming from El's old room. He remembers heading towards the sound, opening the door and seeing a huge clock. And now he's back at… his house?
"I know you lie to yourself, and I know you lie to people you love all the time."
"Who are you?" He asked while looking around scared. This didn't make sense, they had defeated the Mind Flayer... right? So who was this voice?
"You pretend to be normal, wanting to fit into this disgusting town, but the reality is different. Right, Mike? You're not normal. You're not what your parents want you to be, you're not what your friends expect you to be..."
"Shut up. ¡LEAVE ME ALONE!" He left his room and ran downstairs, but Vecna did not stop tormenting him.
''...you're not even what your girlfriend wants you to be. Because you lie to her her about what you really feel, you know she doesn't deserve it, but you still do it. You know why? Because you are weak Mike."
He frowned, he was upset, the voice had no idea what he was saying, this wasn't real. Just another stupid nightmare. He ran further until he reached the basement almost out of breath.
"You're too weak to accept the truth when it is right in front of your eyes, you always have been. You don't want to see how your parents are in a loveless marriage… just like you and Eleven are in a relationship full of lies, and all because of you. You pretend to be a strong leader and a hero to your friends, but that's just another mask to cover your own fears and insecurities."
Suddenly, his eyes felt wet.
"You hide your feelings, because you're afraid that people will find out the truth."
"What if they don't like the truth?" Will's words echoed in his head.
"Those feelings that haunt your mind constantly, those that haunt you even in your dreams. The ones you don't fully understand but feel won't go away overnight. Those strong feelings you have, not for Eleven, but… for another person."
Her heart began to beat much faster, and her head ached in an unnatural way, as if something was trying to break in and wanted to extract everything that was inside.
"Look at his art, Mike. It is everywhere, on every wall."
He raised his head slowly and began to look at the basement walls. The voice was right, his art. The ones he had given him with so much love. He also had a folder full of those drawings, his drawings. He couldn't deny that fact.
"You are unconscious, Mike. You've pushed your best friends and family away. You hurt Eleven's feelings, because you don't love her the way she wants, right Mike?"
He covered his ears, he didn't want to listen anymore, he couldn't… the words burned. He never wanted to hurt her, he never wanted to hurt anyone. However, he did, and he felt miserable about it.
''You don't love her, you don't love her that way because it never felt real. It was more like a game, right? Let's play pretend, let's play because maybe, if we play too much... it will become real."
Tears managed to well up in his eyes. He didn't want to feel this anymore, it was horrible. As his shaky legs would allow him, he walked out of the basement wanting to head for the front door. But Vecna still had truths to tell him.
"Let me tell you that ever since you started that game… it was your destiny to end it. You're not made for each other, you're not the perfect princess and the brave paladin. Can't you see? Your heart never fully belonged to her, it never truly chose her."
He reached the door, grabbed the knob and opened it. The sunlight blinded him completely. His eyes adjusted to the morning light and he noticed that he was not in the entrance of the Wheeler residence. Now where the hell was he? A smalls children ran past him, laughing and playing.
"You have always chosen him first, from the beginning… it has always been him, Mike."
When he finished hearing those words he frowned again and turned around, slowly and shakily, while he recognized that moment that had once been… his first day of kindergarten. Suddenly, one boy stood out among the others. He couldn't believe what his eyes were seeing. He was approaching and stealthily surrounding the little boy, fearing that he might perceive his presence. He was so scrawny and innocent, with freckled cheeks and messy black hair. He noticed how he looked into the distance worried, seeing how the other children had fun, he was alone and sad. Mike felt déjà vu. The boy began to walk towards the playground where his other classmates were, he followed him.
''That day your life changed, that day you made an important choice, Mike. Do you remember which one it was?"
Little Mike was looking in all directions, the other kids seemed to be fine in their groups, they didn't need him. He was going to give up, but then… he saw this other little boy. His full attention was directed to him. The boy was on the swings, swinging by himself, alone. Little Mike felt a bit of insecurity, what if the other boy wanted to be alone, he didn't want to be a bother. But, on the other hand, he needed to talk to him, there was something in that boy that filled him with curiosity.
Mike looked at the little version of him with tears in his eyes and gently took his shoulder.
"Go with him" He whispered, the boy returned his gaze and listened carefully "I assure you it will be the best thing you have ever done."
The opposite blinked in fright and looked down at him.
''I don't even know what to say'' he spoke in a high-pitched and shy voice.
"I know you will find the right words" he took the boy’s chin and made them connect their gazes. "I trust you."
After a few seconds, they both smiled at each other and the little boy walked away with a newfound confidence.
Mike watched the scene in wonder and nostalgia. He no longer had control over his tears, they just poured out of him disconsolately. He watched the younger version of him talk to the other boy, they were smiling at each other and chatting about who knows what, forming the strongest bond Mike had ever had with another human being.
The recess bell rang and everyone began to enter the establishment. The two little friends got out of the swings, they held hands and before following the others inside, they stopped. The adorable Will slightly turned his head and looked at him with a serious expression.
''Why did you screw this up, Mike?'' He spoke with a sad tone.
He frowned again, he didn't understand. What was Will referring to? Suddenly, he felt a warm hand on his shoulder, he turned quickly.
"Why did you have to leave me out, Mike?"
Now it was another version of Will, 15 years old to be precise, with the same sadness in his eyes.
"Will, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-"
"Shut up, Mike. Everything you say hurts me."
A storm of black clouds began to overshadow the beautiful blue sky, they were full of gigantic red lightning and it seemed to be wanting to surround them.
''I don't want to hurt you, believe me it's the last thing I want-''
"Please shut up, stop!" Will screamed and cried, as he desperately fell to his knees on the ground.
Mike cried even more, if that was possible.
"You can’t fix this anymore, he is broken… you have broken him."
The voice, again, adding even more angst to what was happening.
"No, NO!" Mike yelled before falling to the ground in front of Will.
"You and him will never be what you were before, and you can never be more than friends. Because you'll never be able to tell him how you really feel."
He raised his hands and held Will's face, which was wet with tears.
"Will, look at me." Mike sobbed and pleaded.
The opposite kept his gaze lost, as if he had no soul.
"Please just look at me...I'm here." He wiped Will's tear away with the back of his thumb.
Byers finally looked back at him.
"Will, there is something important I have to tell you. I, I…"
He took a deep breath and looked once more at that boy who made him happy so many times, the one who gave his life so much more color. He had to tell him, there was no more time.
''I love you." He smiled genuinely and brought their forehead together. He was still crying, this was all too much for him, but he had done it, he told Will the truth.
"Mike, I…"
They slowly parted and their gazes reconnected, he felt so hopeful, so filled with a new energy, that he believed it might be similar to electricity. Maybe this is what love really felt like.
"I could never love you."
Mike separated from him quickly, dejected by what he had just heard. There was venom in his words, in the way he had said it.
"Did you think it would be so easy?" Will’s voice turned monstrous "Did you think I would return your feelings and we would live happily ever after?"
Now Will's face began to deform, he almost looked like a… zombie. He got up from the ground and began to back away, while he listened to the hurtful words of the monstrous Will.
"You are so naive, Mike. I will never love you, I dislike you, you are disgusting."
He had a lot of tears, a lot of pain and angst, it scared him too much.
"You are doomed... no one will ever truly love you."
After these words, the zombie Will turned to dust in front of him, vanishing into the air, leaving Mike completely shocked.
“Time's up, Mike. Now you're alone again."

I hope you liked this little fic. I just wanted to get this scene out of my head. I mean ✨Mike being taken over by Vecna, and him making Mike see the moment when he met Will✨. The idea was torturing me for a whole week lol. I don't really know how to end it aka give it a good ending to the story… cause I definitely didn't think an ending. But if you guys want me to do a sequel, where hypothetically they get Mike out of there, I'd be willing to write one. Good energy and constructive criticism are appreciated. Thanks for reading <3
