Magnum Dopus – Suburbanova Review
Strange times in Suburbanova.
Formulating a novel headspace for the old days of new wave the seasoned musician from the busy Memphis music scene, Andrew McCartney, the band's lead singer, has been mastering the mid-80s revival persona since the mid-2010s.
Before the inception of Magnum Dopus, McCartney released solo work under the independent umbrella Space Mall Records and official credit is in order due to keeping the passion for new wave consistent, the retro-futuristic genre that once populated pop culture in the late-70s to early-80s from classic bands like the B52s and The Smiths. Fast forward to 2019, McCartney is now taking a stab as frontman in Magnum Dopus.
Already having an EP and 2 full-length LPs in just under two years, the band's sophomore effort, Suburbanova, begins with the somber “8 p.m.” which shows the band's biggest strength allowing lyrical wiggle room to convey solid storytelling.
As great of a head start the intro track is, Not all is intact, the more sonically elastic and upbeat dancers on the album begin to rise, and the groups' aesthetic starts to unthread. Moving away from delicate Morrisey-inspired sounds with Jim Morrison tones into jarring B-52 inflections meshed with thin guitar funk-rock, thuds that are spotted in tracks like “The Waiting Game”.
Although the biggest offender off the record is its modern yet occasionally dry mastering, Magnum Dopus’ sound works well in the subtle background. Essentially setting the template for unembellished song structure and melody, which in conclusion allows the record to flourish in those key moments on the gentler highlighted tracks like “Be Mine”, “Augmented”, and even the lead single “Scratch & Dent Blonde”.
Suburbanova is a solid attempt that has memorable moments that, with a close retrospective, can become refined to create an improved input in the future.

When my mom was volunteering with city council, they took a bunch of field trips to various civic infrastructures to learn how the worked so they could learn How The Fuck A City Works. On one of these trips, they were all in a bigass van doing icebreaker questions and one of the questions was "Whats your largest scar and how did you get it?"
And everyone in the van wanted to brag so there was "I did this with an awl while woodworking" and "Oh I got my appendix out" and the like, until they get to my Mom in the farthest back seat in the van and she pulls her shirt up a bit to show the six-inch scar on her abdomen. She's 4'10" so it looks enormous on her, bright red because that's how she scars.
"Oh My God!" people gasped.
"I had to have an eight-pound growth removed from my abdomen." She said, sitting back down to a chorus of horrified gasps.
"What happened?" Asked the trip coodinator, walking right into it.
"Oh, They're in college now!" She said.
"Sorted out who had a sense of humor in that group real fast." Mom explained later.

I feel myself shutting down, closing off, like I should tell people: "No, we don't use this heart anymore. It's too fragile."
