In episode 91, Beau makes an insight check on Essek when he shows up at the Xhorhaus for dinner and says he came in part because it's been a while (🎵) since he had a social engagement. Marisha rolls a nice juicy Nat 20 and Matt delivers a moderately long whisper. It's not a huge mystery; we know that even a Nat 20 on insight has limits to the information it can provide (you're not suddenly clairvoyant or able to access context you didn't already have), and we can surmise especially with post-campaign comments from Matt that it was probably something alluding to Essek's loneliness and some veracity to his claim about it having "been a while" (🎵). But just for entertainment I really wish we could know specifically what the whisper was, because its effect was very funny. Observe:
this century+ old drow is a neurotic recluse nerd with no friends he fucking levitates everywhere cuz he did it for a while when he was like twenty and then felt like he just couldn’t stop cuz now everyone expects him to just be levitating what the fuck of course the m9 immediately decided to adopt him if they didn’t I would have
the "we should explore other things... other things" "I have some ideas... there are favors owed still" interaction is just so funny to me
it's probably like the best example of the Caleb "I'm so honey potting this wizard" widogast and essek "yea I bet I can use these favors for more... magic studies!!" thelyss dynamic that we ever see
Oh it’s so hard to watch Caleb go from being the happiest we’ve probably ever seen him after he’s finished completing the spell for Nott/Veth to going back to his dour sadness when he realizes that this means she has no reason to stay with the group and would likely go back to her family... And him kinda half trying to convince her to stay longer, like he just realized what that means and is just not quite ready to lose her
The end of c2e91 is hitting so hard… The joy of Essek and Caleb and Nott working so well together, creating this spell! This thing that Nott has been searching for since the beginning! And it’s not just Caleb who solves her problem for her - she helps! She contributes! And so does Essek, this person who didn’t have to help them, who shouldn’t even like them as much as he does. All three of them together, bringing this spell into existence.
And then, almost immediately, Nott’s hesitation. Her fear. Because this is what she’s wanted for so long, and now it’s here in front of her and that’s scary. That’s huge. And it means she has to choose, now, between her family and the Nein. An impossible choice.
And Caleb, too. Telling her it’s okay if she needs to think about it. If she needs to take her time. If she wants to stay with them, for as long as she wants. Because he sees it, too, how this spell will change everything.
Everything about those moments leading up to the spell, everything between Nott and Caleb, between Nott and the rest of the Nein… The I love you all, the kiss…
And then the spell fails, but it doesn’t matter - something has still changed. Because the spell exists, because Nott has made her choice, because there’s no walking this back now… This episode was so so much.
love watching travis realize that caleb is in love with jester in c2e91 (around 1:56:00-2:00:00) and especially love his face when caleb says "you've done so much for m- done so much for us"
Forever charmed that Essek's tower has a canonical smell, and that the smell is "strangely herbal with a hint of electrical fire." ah, yes, the scent of illicit dunamantic experiments and heresy
