Historia celta en Europa

Los celtas surgieron en la historia en el milenio antes del nacimiento de Cristo cuando comenzaron a extenderse desde sus patrias en Europa Central hacia Turquía y Grecia, al oeste hacia Alemania, Francia, Gran Bretaña e Irlanda, y al sur en Italia y España. Eran un pueblo vigoroso, guerrero, experto en metalurgia y equitación, y dispuesto a comerciar. Tenían un estilo artístico curvilíneo distintivo que utilizaban tanto en armas como artículos de adorno personal. Las tumbas ricas encontradas en sus patrias en Austria y Suiza muestran que esta era una sociedad sofisticada con fuertes vínculos con el mundo clásico.

En el siglo IV a. C. los celtas dominaban el norte de Europa. Los romanos desafiaron su expansión e invadieron la Galia (Francia) y Gran Bretaña para plantar sus propias colonias. Según Julio César, los galos eran un pueblo vital, parecido a los niños a los que le gustaba la ropa colorida y mucho beber, y eran valientes e imprudentes en la batalla, los admitió de ciertas maneras, pero aún así los consideraba bárbaros cuya civilización era muy inferior a la suya. Los celtas lucharon amargamente otra vez contra los romanos, incluyendo varias batallas en las que fueron liderados por la reina guerrera, Boudica. Hubo una última batalla heroica en Anglesey, pero los celtas finalmente perdieron y tuvieron que aceptar la colonización romana de sus tierras.

Sin embargo, los romanos fueron graciosos en la victoria, respetando las tradiciones culturales celtas. Muchos de estos sobrevivieron en varias formas hasta que las olas de nuevos invasores (Ángles, sajones, jutos, vikingos) llegaron y los reprimieron de forma más brutal. Algunos pueblos celtas fueron absorbidos por la cultura de los invasores, algunos huyeron al oeste a Gales y Cornwall.
