Bartolomeo Veneto - Portrait of a Man (ca. 1510s)
This young man is possibly a member of the Sforza household, the ruling family of Milan during the Renaissance. He wears a plaquette on his hat indicating his nobility and status. This medallion depicts an actual work by Andrea Riccio (1470–1532), an artist whose work is represented in the museum's collection. The medallion illustrates an allegory of fortune and virtue personified by a winged woman and a child. (source)

This masterpiece of Renaissance metalwork is signed on the browplate by Filippo Negroli, whose embossed armor was praised by sixteenth-century writers as "miraculous" and deserving "immortal merit."

Formed of one plate of steel and patinated to look like bronze, the bowl is raised in high relief with motifs inspired by classical art. The graceful mermaidlike siren forming the helmet's comb holds a grimacing head of Medusa by the hair. The sides of the helmet are covered with acanthus scrolls inhabited by putti, a motif ultimately derived from ancient Roman sculpture and wall paintings.

Lee Miller and Roland Penrose, lovers, in the summer of 1937, lived in Mougins village above Cannes near Picasso's studio. Miller was probably staged their pose: Paul Éluard kiss Nusch Éluard, Penrose and Man Ray look bored. - Manet's female nude is thought to be Victorine Meurent, his favorite model, subject of Olympia. The male figure on the right was based on a combination of his two brothers, Eugène and Gustave. The other man is based on his brother-in-law, Dutch sculptor Ferdinand Leenhoff. By portraying an ordinary scene on such a large scale, Manet validated the seemingly mundane subjects, inspiring Impressionists like Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir to follow suit with Water Lilies and The Luncheon of the Boating Party, respectively.

Decorator: Etching attributed to Daniel Hopfer (German, Kaufbeuren 1471–1536)
The decoration of this armor is an outstanding example of German figural etching. The etching has been attributed to Daniel Hopfer, a noted printmaker and armor etcher. Hopfer may have pioneered the technique of making prints from an etched metal plate, which revolutionized printmaking in the sixteenth century.
The figures on the breastplate depict major Christian saints and include the Virgin and Child flanked by Saint George and Saint Christopher. On the backplate, Saint Anne with the Virgin and Child is flanked by Saint James the Great and Saint Sebastian. The figure of Saint Sebastian pierced by arrows is copied from a woodcut made about 1507 by Hans Baldung Grien (1484 or 1485–1544).
