Story time: yard chaos
[I told this story on Twitter today, 11/29/22, because I like to be as dramatic and ominous as possible.]
Friends, you may be aware that I often tell Neighborhood Gothic tales about the happenings on my street. I have another one.
So yesterday I look out the kitchen window and see about 15-20 fluorescent-vested workers (who do they work for? We just don’t know) hanging out about 1-2 houses down. Just chilling on both sides of the street, sitting on the storm drain, in the yards, what have you.
And they are more than welcome to; I just don’t know why. Tons of trucks around. Including multiple USIC trucks: People What Identify Your Underground Utilities. You may remember that I ran into one while I was tripping on yard nightshade. Good people, necessary, ideal.
I go about my business (cleaning out my tea kettle). Sometime later, loud machine noises. Bear in mind that I live in an area where there is always someone working loudly on something. Cutting down dangerous trees (RIP🌲), building new houses, eternally landscaping. I shrug.
I look out the window again. The corner of my neighbor’s yard is thoroughly dug up. Now, this summer, I watched a man cut down a whole-ass tree and every single bush (including two beautiful gardenias) of hers branch by branch. There are naught but stubs now.
Am I now that old lady who peers out the window at the doings of the street? Yes. Do I know Debra’s life? No. Do I have any idea why twenty workers are needed to dig up one corner of her yard? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Some hours later, my mom comes home for lunch. She is INCANDESCENT with rage. I assume it’s because our street is clogged with trucks. Why u mad tho? “WHY AREN’T YOU MAD?” After some confusion, my mom gets it through my placid head that the workers
are digging up
OUR YARD
I hadn’t looked out the FRONT window; our dog had been asleep and hadn’t needed to go out. There are three GIANT HOLES, like 3x3 and half a grave deep, at the street end of our yard, like prairie dog holes from hell. Nobody said FUCK ALL to me about this.
My mom’s higher self is a capable, savvy woman who knows her worth. My mom’s shadow self is a Karen. She marches out there to ask what the FUCK is going on. A foreman steps forward. “Oh, they didn’t put a letter on your door?” NO!!!!
I can’t tell if this [a tweet that did not in fact go through] went through or not, because they keep cutting off the wifi. There is a crane over my street now
What is GOING ON, asks my mom. “Something about fiber optic cables,” the foreman says. SOMETHING?? “Something about phones.” IN 2022??? We Just Don’t Know.
Holes begin to spread up the street.
By sundown, every single yard upstreet of mine has a minimum of three deep pits exposing Unknown Cables. Turf has been skinned off and thrown aside. I’m just like, this might as well happen. My mom now has a contractor’s business card. Neighbors are mad. Nobody was warned.
I’m out with Cooper on the deck (where he likes to chase falling leaves) in the dimming sunlight, and I happen to look around at the street.
Water is cascading down the road.
I live on a hill. You know how it looks during a hard rain, just little wavelets washing down the road? That. Water pouring down the entire width of the street, gutter to gutter. The deluge has already reached the intersection and shows no sign of stopping.
My phone has no wifi.
The Workers from Somewhere have hit a water main up the street. In front of a lawyer’s house, I’m told, so have fun with that. What I learn later is, despite there being 3-4 USIC trucks on the street, no one ever marked any utilities. Somebody told the workers not to wait.
Birmingham Water Works trucks, flashing their lights in the darkness, show up at 9 pm to fix the busted water main. Neighbors are wandering around fretting that the Great Flood of ‘22 is going to show up on their utility bills. The lawyer is very popular.
I get up this morning. By 6 am, they are back out there, doubling down. This is not the workers’ fault, btw. Honest day’s work, dishonest employer.
Every single house on my side of the street has a minimum of four (4) fiber optic prairie dog pits now.
I don’t know WHAT and I don’t know WHY. And now, there is a crane over my street for something happening underground. Orange cones and a giant wheel of orange and blue cable have appeared. Someone is brandishing a rake. End transmission for now.
UPDATE: The crane is ripping out a small tree (RIP 🌳) near the top of the street. I do not know if this is related or not. Either shit just got real with the cable digging, or we have dueling contractors.
[Situation in progress, more later]

Top Surgery, the day before
Tomorrow is the day for my moobectomy (thanks to the workmate who coined that term!). I have had the confirmation text from the hospital that my appointment is going ahead. Double incision and bye-bye boulders. Am I nervous? Yes Am I excited? Yes It is absolutely awesome that I get to have my op on the first day of pride month? HELL YES!
Okay, here’s my prep so far:
Let’s take as read that I have my mini-mes all looked after and the pets sorted - grandparents, are great to have.
For the last 10 days I have been masked up at work and anywhere public to avoid last minute germs.
2x lateral flow tests done - I will have another one tomorrow but they want advanced tests too.
My nest at home is all set up. I have a comfy sofa with lots of cushions and an equally comfy foot stool (it started life as a tyre but I got creative with foam and fun space fabric). Next to it I put a 2x1 kallax unit to store by immediate bits and pieces, including meds, snacks and charging point. I have a tray for meals and resting the laptop on, I also have a tablet if I don’t want the weight of the laptop. Snacks are important but hydration is importanter, so I have a 2ltr water bladder hung up with the mouth piece conveniently nearby.
I have pre-cooked a load of family dinners and thrown them in the freezer so there is one less thing for everyone to worry about. I have also been on a cleaning and tidying spree around the house and got lots of comfy clothes ready - joggers, loose shirts, slouchy duvet day stuff.
Packing for hospital has been tough, knowing what I need and still keeping the bag light is a challenge. I am staying in for two nights rather than being kicked out straight away, which suits me because I have reacted badly to anaesthetic before, so I have a few days worth of clothes. PJs, loose boxers and comfy socks, the tops are t-shirts I have altered so they zip up the front. I have slippers too which I might just wear home because why not?
Spare phone (the old cheap one), tablet (with films downloaded in case of bad hospital wifi) and soft headphones so I can fall asleep with them on and not have to listen to the usual hospital noises (this doubles as a face mask if necessary). Extra long charger cable included!
Misc bits and pieces, toiletries (toothbrush and paste only, no deodorants), wet wipes, folder for paperwork, two little packets of sweets as treats, fleecy blanket from home, neck pillow, mastectomy pillow, water bottle and reusable straw. (there is no brush on the list because my hair has just been clippered short, not because I forgot - your results may vary)
If you are still reading, congratulations on your ability to tolerate rambling!
This afternoon the children will go to their grandparents and I will head up with my partner to stay in a hotel for the night since the hospital want me in at 0630 (yawn o’clock). I have had to put together an overnight bag, one for us, one of the children, and a bag of bits I will want for the journey home but don’t want to take in with me - an extra blanket, coat, and a seatbelt pillow.
Deep breath, nearly time to go.

Level safe
Survival difficulty : class 1
》Safe

》Minimal entity count
Description
Level safe, unlike level SaFe, appears to be a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom house, it’s built to look familiar; using furniture from the 80s. 1 entity inhabits Level safe, which is entity 162 “Mau” Upon entering the level, you will feel safe and protected, it smelling like a sterile hotel room almost; this level has food, running water, A/C, and even wifi and cable. It is all taken care of by Mau (see Entity 162)
It has a total of 7 rooms, including the aforementioned bedrooms and bathrooms, kitchen/dining room, living room, and basement.
The bedrooms look about the same; one bed, a dresser filled with clothes and undergarments for both sexes, a bookshelf, a bedside table with a lamp with water bottles in the drawers, and various photos in picture frames.
The bathrooms are fairly normal looking; a sink, toilet, bathtub, and a medicine cabinet filled with various medicines like Benadryl, Mucinex, Tylenol, etc. as well as some hygiene care and lotions.
The living room has a tv, a rocking chair, couch, and a toy box filled with toys varying from dolls, letter blocks, stuffed animals, etc. the tv is usable but only has the news channel and a kids cartoon channel.
The kitchen/dining room are connected; there is a fridge filled with various foods, a pantry, a stool to reach the counters (seeming to be for the entity that inhabits this level due to its height), an oven, microwave, and a bunch of cabinets and drawers for plates, bowls, pots, pans, and utensils.
The dining room has a wooden table with matching chairs, a china cabinet, and a potted plant.

Winter Refit 2023-2024
This winter was spent in the water because we plan to be out of the water in the summer for a big job, but more on that below.
The tasks and improvements we did during this winter's refit were:
New Deck
When we bought Skyran we knew the original teak deck was nearing the end of its life. We wanted to replace it before any leaks developed causing bigger problems. So we made the commitment this year. The deck was templated in the autumn and, over the winter, a new deck was made for us This is to be professionally installed in a boatyard for us in early summer 2024. We decided to replace with a 'fake' teak to ease the maintenance burden in future years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Removable Inner Forestay
Our mast is fitted for a cutter-rig. We decided some time ago to make use of this and install a halyard, stay and running backstays to make possible the use of a staysail and storm-staysail. This is because our headsail is a large overlapping genoa at present, challenging to handle in a big blow and obviously not the best shape when deeply reefed. For flexibility, we decided to make the inner stay removable. But first it was necessary to install a chain-plate to handle the structural loading. Having designed this and had it manufactured, we installed it in early 2024. We installed the inner stay and running backstays in late March. Very pleased with the results.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Electric Bilge Pumps
We completely replaced and upgraded the arrangements. We installed a new Whale gulper pump in the engine space, and a high-capacity Jabsco impeller pump for the main bilge. Both have solid-state level and alarm switches and completely independent power supplies and control switches with all new wiring. We created a neat new bilge pumps control panel too, and replaced quite a lot of the old hoses.
Water Meter
We installed a new meter, which is of the flow counting type. This is much more accurate than a tank level sensor that tells us exactly how many litres we have used. We measured the tanks using another flow counting meter so we know their exact capacity. The new water meter shows how many litres remain aboard, which is very handy indeed.
Tumblr media
New Spray Hood & Canopy
We had replacements made for these. We will keep the older one for winters.
Tumblr media
Electrical Improvements
We made a lot of improvements to the 12V DC system. Too many to list in detail, but the main items were:
Re-wired fridge and freezer systems, including relays. And fixed shore power supply to freezer.
Replaced choc-box terminals behind DC distribution panel with ring-screw terminals.
Re-designed and replaced un-switched distribution system, including fitting a Blue Sea Systems safety hub to remove multiple connections to the service batteries.
Installed marine rated battery fuses to protect cabling from service battery (there was no fusing before!). And installed fusing to other principal cables.
Removed and/or replaced many, many cables. All replacements made with tinned copper cabling.
Replaced gas alarm and sensors.
Installed WiFi router to broadcast navigation system data to mobile devices and computers.
Installed new 240V sockets adjacent to galley (for toaster and coffee machine :)
Miscellanious
We replaced the headsail furler line, with a larger diameter dyneema one to guard against failure when reefing in heavy weather.
We serviced the engine
We ordered wheels for the dinghy, to make it easier to haul it up slipways and beaches.

Valuable tip to consider before renting an Apartment
Benalmadena is a diverse city with a growing international community. The city’s thriving economy is creating many new jobs, and developers are working quickly to keep up with population growth. Moving to Benalmadena can be an appealing option that offers sunshine and a pleasant environment. Choosing the ideal neighbourhood that aligns with your priorities is the first step when apartment hunting in Benalmadena. Here is some information to help guide your apartment search in this city.
Tumblr media
Choose your location wisely
When booking a holiday rental in the city, one of the best things is choosing a home base that fits your needs and wants. For a relaxing beach getaway, consider coastal towns like Torremolinos, Benalmadena or Fuengirola, which offer beautiful ocean views and quick beach access. These resort areas also have many family-friendly activities that kids will enjoy.
Look at the facilities
Before renting an apartment in Benalmadena, research the city's many amenities including shops, restaurants, bars, casinos, golf courses, sports facilities, cultural attractions, and outdoor activities. Fortunately, this lively resort town on the Costa del Sol offers excellent services and something for everyone, whether you're interested in history, culture, or sports. Come explore the many options for yourself!
Book in advance for the best deals
Booking your holiday accommodation well in advance often results in better rates, especially for peak summer travel from June through August. Aim to book at least 6 to 8 months ahead to get the best availability and prices during the busy season. For stays of a month or longer, booking even further ahead frequently yields even bigger savings.
Self-catering or dining out
When booking an apartment rental in Benalmadena, one of the biggest factors to consider is your desired board basis. If you are travelling with family or staying for a week or longer, an apartment with a kitchen is an ideal, budget-friendly option that allows you to enjoy homemade meals using fresh, local ingredients from the colourful markets. However, if you want to fully relax and experience the vibrant food scene, choose an apartment without a kitchen so you can savour breakfast on your balcony, three-course lunches, and seaside dinners. With either option, you really can't go wrong!
Lease agreement-
When considering renting an apartment in Benalmadena, there are several important questions to ask beforehand. First, clarify whether the rent is charged monthly or annually. Also, find out the late payment policy and if any grace period applies. Be sure to get the exact lease start and end dates. Keep in mind any annual rent increases, as these may not be ideal if seeking a long-term rental. Having answers to these key questions will help ensure you make an informed decision when signing the tenant agreement.
Proper maintenance-
The apartment rentals in Benalmadena are well-maintained and easy to rent, with staff on hand to handle maintenance issues. Many complexes offer 24/7 emergency maintenance service, so problems like breakdowns, leaks, or power outages can be swiftly resolved if reported to management. With tenant permission, maintenance teams can even make repairs while residents are away at work. This robust maintenance system is a major advantage for those renting apartments in Benalmadena.
Knowledge of Actual rent-
Rent alone does not reflect the full cost of living in an apartment. Landlords may charge additional fees for property management, utilities, and amenities that are rolled into the monthly rent. Frequently, expenses like water, electricity, gas, and air conditioning are not included in the base rent. To determine the total monthly cost, it is important to find out exactly what utilities and services are covered. While cheaper rent may seem appealing, it could ultimately exceed your budget if you must pay extra for utilities, cable, WiFi, internet, and other essentials out of pocket.
Property security-
When renting an apartment, take charge of your security by thoroughly reviewing all safety features before signing a lease. Before moving in, confirm the unit has a high-security lock, buzzer system, fire extinguishers, and any other measures needed to protect your belongings.
Tumblr media
Parking Situation-
If you own a car, securing parking should be a top priority when apartment hunting in Benalmadena. Street parking near apartments is often scarce and costly. Therefore, finding an apartment with a parking garage is crucial before signing a lease. However, a designated parking spot frequently requires an additional fee, so be sure to inquire about parking costs as well.
Conclusion
Sunshine Homes is your premier property management company in Benalmadena for finding furnished apartments for rent. They help clients find short-term or long-term fully furnished apartments with desired amenities in prime locations. Tenants consistently express satisfaction with the apartments and properties Sunshine Homes offers in the Benalmadena area. The Canon Sylph CP1300 small photo printer (black)
Canon Selphy CP1500 vs CP1300 The majority of the time, yes. The controls on the 1300 are more button-based, while the controls on the 1500 are more internal menu-based. The paper tray and cartridges are the same. Both are rather obvious. After a few minutes, you should be able to feel at ease. The card size (2.1" x 3.4") and postcard size (4" x 6") sets of authentic Canon color ink and paper are compatible with the Selphy CP1300. The KC-18IF, KC-18IL, KC-36IP, KP-108IN, RP-54, and RP-108 are all compatible sets. You need an Internet connection and the free Canon PRINT Inkjet/SELPHY app from Google Play and App Stores. Compatible with AndroidTM mobile devices running Android 2.3.3 or later and iPad, iPhone 3GS or later, and iPod touch 3rd generation or later devices running iOS 7.0 or later. Your device has to be part of the same active wireless 802.11 b/g/n/ac/ad network as your printer. requires a suitable social media account and is governed by the terms of service for that account. Some exclusions could be valid. No, an SD card or USB stick may be used to print. A computer connected through a cable can also print. Without having to connect to your home WiFi, you may print from a phone or tablet using the printer's built-in Wi-Fi receiver. Additionally, you can use it as a wireless printer by connecting it to your home network. The answer is that melting the absurdly tiny specks of color onto the specialty paper is far more expensive than using spray paint, etc. The outcomes are astounding. I have prints on my refrigerator that are ten years old yet still look new. If the printer has the appropriate ink and paper configured for that size, your Selphy CP1300 should be able to print in any supported size. We advise contacting our US-based support staff for free help if you want more assistance. The Canon USA website offers them continuously. You may see, edit, and apply filter effects like sepia or B/W to the photographs you wish to print using the huge built-in 3.5″ display. Oh my, WiFi, USB, and more! Choose the printing method that works best for you from among the various options available on the SELPHY CP1500, including WiFi, AirPrint, USB (computer and USB flash drive), your camera memory card, and the SELPHY Photo Layout mobile app. The SELPHY CP1500’s clean and contemporary appearance is evident in how simple it is to operate, even with robust capabilities like Wi-Fi and smartphone compatibility. You can connect the SELPHY CP1500 to just about anything and print from devices like your smartphone to your computer, camera, memory cards, and even USB flash drives with the versatility of Wi-Fi, USB, and memory card connections. The Canon Sylph CP1300 small photo printer (black) is a wireless portable photo printer that is ideal for use both at home and on the move. Your memories will be ready to share no matter where you are if you just print them using Air Print, your camera’s memory card, or the Canon print app from Facebook and Instagram! With party shuffle prints or 2″x6″ photo booth layout prints, you may even create amusing collages with your friends from different devices. You may pick the ideal photo size from 4″x6″, 2.1″x2.1″ square, or even sticker paper, all of which are water-proof and intended to endure up to 100 years! With the available battery pack, you can nearly take the Sylph CP1300 anywhere. Your pictures will rapidly dry and retain their quality for up to 100 years. They will even be water-resistant. Enjoy how easy it is to link your tablet and smartphone with the Canon print app. You may also print directly from a USB drive or the memory card in your camera.

Arrival to and evening at Lidernenhütte
We all met back up a few minutes before the bus arrival. The “bus” turned out to be a 13 passenger van with a printed paper sign on the dash stating it was route 541. We piled in the van and had 2 seats to spare after a few others climbed in. We soon learned the reason for the small van as the road was 1 lane and very windy with occasional pull outs for cars to pass. We made it to the Riemstalden where we hopped off the van/bus and noted a fairly low tech looking blue building that housed the cable car we were supposed to take to get close to our hut. We were a bit puzzled as there seemed to be no one manning any stations and there were lots of instructions in german including one on a door that said “knock please” per google translate, but nothing happened after knocking. Eventually we heard the engine fire up so decided to hop in the tram and see what happened and sure enough we started moving soon after and had an enjoyable and scenic ride to the top. At the top we found a large family hanging out with young kids and the grandma went to get a money bag and started speaking to us in German. Her daughter eventually helped translate that she was asking how old the children were. We relayed the info and were told we needed to pay 62 CHF for roundtrip tickets for the fam. Thankfully, Matt had read in advance that it was cash only so had some CHF in his wallet. She accepted the money and then gave us some nondescript tickets and sent us on our way. We had a short 15 min walk to the Lidernenhütte, but still got sweaty as it was super hot and a bit uphill. On arrival the kids were excited to see they had lots of kid size crocs in the croc/mud/shoe room as well as some kid games and toys. We were shown to a 12 bunk room but told we had it all to ourselves but to please pick only 6 beds to sleep in. After much hemming and hawing dad made an executive decision that we’d sleep in the top 6 beds. We were also happy to see there was free potable water at this hut (but no wifi…). We unpacked a bit then relaxed and played with duplos and dino toys on the deck before setting out to explore the surrounding area. The kids had fun carving words and designs into small rocks in a nearby meadow. We then went in for dinner and had another tasty dinner of apple/celery soup (tasted better than it sounded), very good salad, a 12ish (!!!) layer lasagna and dessert of Straciatella pudding and an apple. All were in agreement that this hut meal beat the previous night’s dinner. Just as we were finishing dinner a squall blew through and it rained and hailed very hard for about 5 minutes, we enjoyed watching this then headed up to relax on our bunk and read some books before heading to bed. We had in part booked the hut due to the reportedly excellent sunset views but were instead treated to a big lightning storm view and it seemed to storm throughout the night.
