Some random and totally useless facts about the ides of march in preparation for the stabbing main event

Caesar knew that people were conspiring against him and that they wanted to kill him but he ignored the warnings bc he basically went: i don’t care if they plan to kill me, they don’t have the audacity to actually go through with it

There was a prophecy that Caesar would be killed but he ignored that too

Caesar wanted to ditch the senate meeting bc his wife had a nightmare that something bad would happen and begged him to stay home. Decimus (the third of the main conspirators) convinced Caesar to come to the senate meeting

There were about 60 conspirators who agreed to help kill Caesar, the rest of the senators just stood by during the murder, no one really tried to help him

Riots broke out after the murder because the population generally liked Caesar

Caesar’s body was later burned at the stake

Nothing changed politically speaking because the conspirators failed to actually take over the government -> Brutus and Cassius (and many of the other conspirators) had to flee

Some sources say that Brutus was haunted by Caesar’s ghost and later impaled himself on his own sword to escape the guilt said ghost confronted him with

The March dawn in Rome is the dayspring of republican hopes; the fading October day at Philippi marks their final defeat. Casca's assertive tones in the brief argument of 2.1 are words as gesture, and pass easily into the flourishes with which his sword cuts the air: first a little to his right, then a little to his left, lastly straight ahead in the direction of the Capitol where, a few hours hence, he will plunge it into Caesar's neck. The three bold movements combine the preliminary actions of a swordsman before a duel with the ritual gestures of a priest wielding the sacrificial knife. In contrast to this expectancy of voice and gesture, the long vowels and weighty monosyllables of Titinius's lament have a solemn finality that makes us feel the tide in men's affairs has exhausted itself on a rocky shore. At the end of the earlier passage, Brutus advances into the group of conspirators, and his hands and theirs are clasped in a complicity that will turn to deadly action when Casca strikes in earnest: 'Speak hands, for me' (3.1.76). On the battlefield, Titinius's cry 'Oh my heart!' sets the tone for the passage quoted and for the play's remaining scenes, dominated as they are by an impassioned fidelity which was thought literally to have its seat in the heart, and which finds its most eloquent expression in the Liebestod of Cassius and Titinius.

Arcade AU. You know how arcades let you put nicknames on your high score? Well Craig is really good at this arcade game but there's someone who keeps getting higher scores than his and so they start remotely beefing but never seeing each other because they go in at different hours, until one day he finds that someone playing on the arcade and it turns out is Octavio and it's basically enemies to lovers but they're enemies because of an arcade game.

Grafitti AU. The same as before except it's grafitti. Craig makes a grafitti, Octavio goes over it and rinse and repeat until one of them finally finds the other doing it.

Sailor Moon AU! Craig is Serena and Octavio is Darien because yeaaa!

ENA AU. Craig is an Ena and Octavio is like Moony but actually supportive when his boyfriend has a mental breakdown.

The Praetorian Guard, the elite body guards of the Caesars and Agustus of Rome. Created by Princeps Augustus Caesar, the Praetorian Guard were supposed to be the loyal guards of the Imperator, ready to protect him from all threats. However, over time, they got too involved in Roman politics and palace intriuge. Delusioned by the power they possed, their officers eventually became corrupt and, in many cases, ended up killing the Caesars they were supposed to protect, before raising into Imperial power the man they desired. If this appointed man chose to go against their interests, then the Praetorians would assasinate him too and repeat the process. At one point, the Praetorians even sold the position of Imperator to the highest bidder.

Eventually, Imperator Constantine the Great would abolish the Praetorians as a guard unit, with its remnants being sent to the frontiers. He would replace them with the much more trustworthy Palatini, "Palace Troops".

Hey! Do you think Servilia Caepionis was aware of Brutus and the others' plot against Caesar? I know series like Rome make her an active part in it (she holds a grudge against both Caesar & his niece Aita in the series), but I suppose the evidence isn't that strong & they made it up for the drama, but on the other side I read somewhere that in the 1st days after the assasination the conspirators used to reunite in Servilia's house so... This makes things more interesting, but, still, we can only guess? On the one hand, Caesar has been her lover for a really long time (though at that time she was involved with Cleopatra VII), on the other hand, Brutus was her son! What is your guess about Servilia's feelings and role (or lack thereof) in what happened at and after the Ides of March?

So, my best guess...

...Is that if Servilia had been involved in the Ides of March plot, we probably would've heard about it. I found no mention of her involvement in Tacitus, Suetonius, Cassius Dio, Plutarch, Velleius Paterculus or Appian, even though we know many other conspirators' names, and there were several "leaks" of the conspiracy. We have a lot of detail from this period, even about the activities of other women like Porcia and Calpurnia. Suetonius and Plutarch in particular would have jumped on a rumor like Caesar's former lover turning against him.

It's true that she tried to help Brutus and Cassius as much as she could once the assassination had happened, though. And she might've been aware of the plot, even if she didn't play a role. But that's just speculation.
