Crossing the Bridge
Somewhere Else Under the King
A chat with Jon and Martin before Trilby leaves for America:
Things have, to some degree, settled down.
Jon sits at the kitchen table, idly paging through one of his newly acquired books and enjoying an early day from work. He occasionally peers up over the pages, looking at Martin while he sets them up for tea. There’s a knock at the door, and Jon returns to his reading when he sees Martin move to answer it.
He could get used to this.
Trilby takes a seat and tips his hat back. “Hello, Jon.”
“Trilby!” Jon says, putting his book down. “What brings you here?”
“Martin let me in.”
Jon chuckles and goes, “I already guessed that. Thanks for not picking our lock.”
“I’ve made enough tea if you’d like to have some,” Martin offers as he returns to the kitchen, grabbing another mug. “We’ve gotten in the habit of having extra in case Claire drops by.”
“Or Lyd, Jess, and Frank,” Jon teases. “I found the cafe, and we made a fan club for Martin.”
“Are you hearing this?” Martin asks Trilby. “Jon, I’m giving Trilby your tea.”
“That sounds good, thanks,” Trilby agrees, half-playing along, half-serious. “I just thought I’d drop by, check in on you before leaving.”
“Oh? Where are you going?” Jon asks.
“America. Cape Canaveral specifically,” he answers. “I’ve been asked to accompany John DeFoe’s remains until they’re in NASA’s possession, and then I’ll stay to see them launched into space. If anything will delay the completion of the bridge, that should. After that, I’m taking a long stay at a health spa in Chapow City.”
“Okay, that one’s made up to confuse us,” Martin says as he sets Trilby’s tea down on the table. “Chapow City? Really?”
But Trilby shakes his head. “No, it’s real. Used to have a place there and everything.” He picks up his tea and takes a sip. “You’ve ruined me, Martin. I can’t drink anything from the office coffee machine ever again.”
Martin laughs as he brings over his and Jon’s tea, sitting at the table with them. “Don’t think I’ve ever gotten that compliment before.”
“Oh, I must not have thought it loud enough,” Jon says, smiling at him.
Martin laughs again and fondly says, “Shut up, Jon.”
Trilby feels the corner of his lip quirk up at that. “So, what are you going to do with Frehorn’s estate, Martin?”
Martin sighs over his cup before setting it down and ticking each item off on his fingers. “We’ve got most of it sorted. There were some staff Jack retained for maintenance; they’ve all been paid severance. The Ministry of Occultism is getting the occult library and any artefacts they find. Jon and I are keeping the private library. And if you know anyone who’s in the market for a mansion that’s not part of the Order of the Blessed Agonies, let me know. I’d love for them to take it off my hands.”
“As far as we know, Frehorn’s Blade was the only dangerous artefact, but we’ve been understandably cautious in our own search,” Jon adds. “We’re not exactly in that line of work anymore.”
Trilby half-wonders if the two considered staying at the mansion, but he doesn’t press it. He wouldn’t be comfortable in such a place himself, and knowing it belonged to Jack Frehorn doesn’t exactly help. “I’m sure the Ministry of Occultism will be glad to take as much of it off your hands as they can. They might even be able to make arrangements with you on the mansion.” He takes another, longer drink of tea. “Where are you going to keep the private library? Is there enough room here?”
“We’re actually thinking about getting one of the bigger flats in the building,” Jon says.
“Oh? Not moving out altogether?” Trilby asks.
Jon smirks at him and says, “Face it, you’re stuck with us.”
Trilby chuckles and replies, “How awful. Let me know if you move before I come back so I know where to pester Martin for more tea.”
“I swear, if you secretly got hit by that projection,” Martin jokes.
“Please, if I do anything more intimate than shaking hands, I might die,” Trilby says. “Are you going to get another job?”
Martin shrugs. “Don’t know. Don’t exactly need one with what Jack left me. I’ll probably keep writing, but who knows if I’ll get it published.”
“And are you keeping yours?” Trilby asks Jon.
“At least part time,” he answers. “Unless I find something else to do.”
Martin turns to Trilby and says, “He loves coming home and complaining to me about how people don’t know their maths.”
“Martin, it’s not even that they don’t know their maths. It’s how often they completely forget to do it at all. How do you forget to add in a check for a thousand pounds after listing it on your deposit slip?”
Martin glances at Jon a moment before going, “See? He loves it.”
“I love that it’s easier to deal with stupid mistakes when I don’t have to speak to the people making them directly,” Jon says.
“Can’t argue with that,” Trilby agrees.
The three chat a bit longer, just enough conversation to merit staying for the tea. Eventually it winds down, and Trilby gets to his feet.
“Well, I’m off to finish packing,” he says. “Want me to look for any souvenirs for you?”
“Yeah, bring me the most obnoxious Hawaiian shirt you can find,” Jon requests.
“Jon, if you say that, he might actually do it,” Martin playfully warns, taking the empty cups.
Trilby just smiles and says, “I’ll see what I can do.”
Jon nods and sees him to the door. “Take care of yourself, Trilby.”
Trilby outright laughs at that. “Try to do the same, okay?” And with that, he takes his leave.
Jon closes and locks the door, and a moment later he feels Martin’s arms around him. What blessed relief, that bone-deep knowledge that the person coming from behind is his Martin. “Hi,” he says, putting his hands on his arms and leaning into the touch.
“Hi,” Martin murmurs, nuzzling the back of his head. “I wonder if Trilby has the right idea, going on holiday at a health spa. Actually, going on holiday in general sounds like the opposite M.O. of a pain cult.”
“Doesn’t sound like a bad idea,” Jon agrees. “I can’t even remember the last time I had a holiday.”
“Surprising no one,” Martin mumbles by his ear.
Jon playfully shoves at him, Martin’s breath tickling. “Guess I’d have to check my time off with work? Unless we want to make it a weekend thing. Or I quit altogether.” He shrugs a little. “What do you want to do?”
Martin kisses the back of Jon’s head. “Right now, the only thing I want is to have a quiet evening in with my boyfriend.”
Jon turns around, drapes his arms on Martin’s shoulders, and gives him a kiss. “You’ve read my mind.”

Have you ever been to a Hard Rock Cafe? No. Would you rather go to Hard Rock or The Rainforest Cafe? I’ve been to The Rainforest Cafe once at Disneyland. They got rid of it, though.  :( I would like to check out Hard Rock sometime.  Have you ever been to Cocoa Beach or Cape Canaveral? Nope. Do bridges make you nervous? YES. Is Michael Cera cute in a dopey way? I don’t personally find him attractive.
Are there any movies that you find so dumb, you find funny? Napoleon Dynamite immediately comes to mind lol. Do you have any older siblings? Yeah, one older brother. How often do you vacation? We usually try to go at least once a year, more if we’re able to. I’m glad I was able to get in a Disneyland trip at the beginning of the year before everything changed and went to shit. Who know when the next vacation will be. Have you tried a Mio (drink-thing) yet? Yeah. Are you currently having any cellular problems? No. Would you feel safe in downtown Atlanta at night? I don’t like being out anywhere at night, honestly. If you could have any car right now, what would you want exactly? I don’t drive, sooo. Do you think it’s cruel to leave a live fish to die in an ice box? Yes! What do you think about all the weird weather we’ve been having? There hasn’t been any weird weather here, just hot, miserable weather. Would you make out with Evan-Rachel Wood? No. When’s the last time you shared a bed/sleeping area with a sibling? Never. Have you ever done anything sexual with someone of the same sex? No. Do you collect issues of a certain magazine? No. Have you ever pawned anything off at a pawn shop? Nope. Do you have stomach abs? Nope. Do you know anyone who is trying to physically impersonate a celebrity? No. Do you have the Bakery Story app? No. I don’t even know what that is. Do you watch Sister Wives? No. Do you know how to tie any sailing knots? Nope.  Have you ever seen a shuttle launch? No. Have you ever taken the subway? No. Have you ever claimed to be someone else when a bill collector’s called? No. I don’t even answer. Are we having signs of the apocalypse? Some things have looked that way. Would you like Charlie Sheen to have his own talk show? Would you watch? Nah, I’m good. Would you rather see The Blue Man Group or Fear Factor live? Uh, neither.  Do you have any exciting plans for this upcoming weekend? No. Same stuff, different day. Are you gonna see The Hangover 2 when it comes out? I was never into those movies. What time is your alarm clock set for? It’s not. Do you have any vintage clothing? Nope. Are you a cheerleader? No. Do you use astringent on your face? No. Do you like clunky rings? Nah. Have you ever bought anything at Rue 21? Yeah. Quite a long time ago. What color of colored contacts would you like to have? I couldn’t do contacts cause I’m a big wimp, but if I could, I’d want blue or green. What’s on your bedside table? My medicine, a cup, bottle of water, a Starbucks energy drink, nail clippers, and hand sanitizer.  What’s on your bed? Pillows, sheets, a throw blanket, stuffed animals, some clothes, my laptop, iPhone, Nintendo Switch, coloring book, 2 packs of colored pencils, a pencil sharpener, an eraser, a book, a Bible, a notebook, and a pen. My bed is also like my desk, ha. Your floor besides furniture? That’s it. Your dresser? My TV and TV router thingy, as well as Christmas decorations... The top shelf in your closet? Medical supplies.  Are there any dead stuffed animals in your house? Uh, noooo. Taxidermy freaks me out. Do you know anyone who goes fishing, but doesn’t like fish? No. What’s the best prize you’ve won on an amusement park/carnival game? A giraffe stuffed animal.  Have you ever done anything sexual in a school? No. Do you like Moosejaw clothing? Never heard of it. Steve-O, Bam, or Johnny Knoxville? I had a big crush on Johnny Knoxville back in the Jackass days. Steve-O and Bam were cool dudes, too. The whole Jackass crew. Have you ever been indoor skydiving? No. Would you have any interest in going on a cruise? They sound like they’d be fun, but they also sound terrifying. The thought of being stuck out in the middle of the water for however long... I can’t swim and deep water scares me, sooo. I’m also sure I’d get motion sickness and that wouldn’t be fun at all.

Pollen Alert
Saturday, January 29, 2022
Today is the day the big blizzard is expected to hit New England. We awake to a pollen alert, medium to high. What a juxtaposition. Should we prepare for 18"-24" of pollen? Will our short-handled spade be up to the task of digging out? These and other pressing issues are on our minds.
It is windy as all get out today. We bundle up and go for our first long walk of the trip. We find a relatively sheltered path through the dunes, parallel to the walk along the jetty. We walk until we reach the beach. A swan is hunkered down on the sand against the wind.
Tumblr media
A yellow flag flying above a lifeguard's hut warns of moderate surf and currents. We are not at risk of encountering any currents. Neither is the swan.
Tumblr media
We cross from the beach over some rocks to the jetty. It is very much a fishing jetty, with welcoming signs, fish cleaning stations, fishing pole holes in the pavement, and fishing line disposal tubes. At the far end of the jetty is a section where you can fish without a license.
A lone pelican dives straight down into the channel. It comes up empty. And just sits, bobbing in the waves. If we wait for it to rise and dive again, we will be here a while.
Tumblr media
We walk back to camp. This direction is into the wind. Brr! We want lunch. A warm lunch. Cold deli sandwiches await us back at the RV. We walk over to a building that looks like it houses a restaurant. The entrance is through a bait and tackle shop. There is a cafe, but it only serves breakfast and it is closed.
Tumblr media
But the door on the other side leads to a big parking lot right up next to the cruise ship Mardi Gras. We see passengers in small groups walking aboard on an enclosed gangway. A painter is rolling bright blue paint onto the bow down near the water line, supported by a cherry picker crane that is leaning out and down below the level of the dock.
Tumblr media
Lunch beacons. We find a restaurant within walking distance and sit down to a bacon and mushroom burger and deep fried jumbo shrimp. The food is warm. The restaurant is warm. We walk back to the RV refreshed. Later we calculate that we had walked over 5 miles. A good start to getting in shape for the Florida Trail. Remember the Florida Trail? That's the point of this trip.
Mid-afternoon we learn that the SpaceX launch has been scrubbed again, postponed to Sunday, and the Sunday launch moved to Monday. Not a surprise given the wind. We head into Titusville to pick up some RV supplies.
While we are still out, Jeanne's sister calls with news that our furnace part has arrived at her place in Jacksonville. Her place is 2.5 hours away. We had planned to drive up tomorrow to get it, but she and her husband graciously offer to drive down and meet us halfway. We happily accept, and start north immediately. We meet in St. Augustine and extend our gratitude for helping to avoid a 5-hour round trip. It is too cold to stand in the parking lot chatting for very long, so we say thanks again and head back south.
We make a quick supper of Shrimp Pad Thai at the first rest area we come to, and finish our journey south. All the cruise ships that had been docked at Port Canaveral when we left that afternoon have departed. We plug in our portable electric heater, hopefully for the last time, and turn in.

The guy playing the piano here typically follows a routine around Koreatown. I see him most days in the cafe below my apartment building, alone at a table eating salads drenched in ranch dressing and talking to no one about politics or The Dodgers. When I came downstairs today he was in the lobby playing the piano. He told me that he wrote this song. It's called 'Cape Canaveral' and it is about rockets taking off.

As far as part-time jobs go, working in a tiny coffeeshop is a pretty good gig. It’s laid back, pretty flexible, and you get to do a lot of people-watching, since most of your regulars are overworked scientists and government-types from the newest space center expansion.
When a tall, arrogant, dark-haired stranger shows up in the tow of one such frazzled scientist one steamy Florida morning, you’re immediately intrigued.
And, even though you don’t know it yet, so is he.

Muse vs Mun
Thank you @norilannasorrows for the tag! <3
            Her Questions:
By: Nori Sorrows 1.) What is one thing you and your muse have in common? 2.) What interests does your muse share with you IRL? 3.) What would be a typical day for you? Your muse? 4.) If you walked into a bar and ordered a drink after a long day what would be your drink of choice? Your muse’s? 5.) What’s one thing you like to do in your downtime? And your muse’s? 6.) What would be your ideal first date? Your muse’s first date? 7.) What’s something that your peers don’t know about you and your muse? 8.) What is the closest thing to your heart? What about your muse? 9.) Do you share a friendship with the person who reblogged this? What about their muse? 10.) What is one wish that you are comfortable enough to share? What is your muse’s wish? After reposting, review your answers and see how close you are to your muse! Are you a happy medium? Complete opposites? Or so much alike its scary? Have fun! 💗
My Answers:
1) What me and Cana have in common.... Well, her human form and I think too damn much. We try to figure out information about others and situations via instinct and thought. We can easily see the worst in things. Cana in Worgen form are similar in that we can be oh so easily distracted and react to everything that we are aware of in some manner. Technically that’s two, but.... XD 2) We love reading! We are interested in watching people grow and improve, with or without our help. 3) My typical day involves waking up, going to work, coming home, playing an mmo, roleplay, listen to music, and fall asleep. Occasionally I bug my IRL friends (aka they drag me out the house). For Cana, she waked up before Hastery, usually does some kind of morning activity with him (ranging from training and nsfw stuff), she runs through her ranger practice in the morning, does does security work where needed for House Reinhard, assisting tasks where needed, at night she may learns a task she needs (swimming, increasing vocabulary, more training), she’ll hang with Hastery for a while before bath and bed..... Idealistically with him along. (My Muse has a much more active and fulfilling life than her muse lol.) 4) I would order Yuengling beer, a Strawberry margarita with sugar, or something with baileys. AH LOVE MAH BAI-BAI. Oh, and tequila. I like Tequila drinks. . Cana is more hardcore and would order... i dunno, something Vodka.... Maybe some moonshine. I’m not sure, but she’d laugh at me for my drinks. 5) In my down time I listen to music and make playlists. That and chat with friends online. Cana would whittle. She loves working with sharp knives and her daggers in creative ways. 6) My first ideal date would be meeting at a cafe, walking through a museum and/or park, and just talking, getting to know each other, while also seeing how they interact with other people. Cana’s idea of a first date is likely sparring each other, or doing something productive together. Cana doesn’t think much of first dates. Hastery’s the first person she has actually dated. 7) People likely don’t know how absolutely terrified I am to RP in front of groups. I have a hard time with it and. Most people don’t know how much Canaveral cares. She could care about people more than Gilmina. She cares so fucking much that she actively doesn’t try getting close to people. Those of her House get the most care, but that she actively says is only from a business standpoint. She will loose her damn mind worrying about others more than any other character I’ve written. 8) Our closest friendships, actually. Even if it’s one way, it’s usually those who we get the most encouragement to be our best from. From that, we are able to be better people. Or imagine that we can be better people than we are :P 9) I believe @norilannasorrows and I met on tumblr! We have a tumblr palship!! 10) My honest wish is for all of us to communicate comfortably and openly with each other. To have better communication with each other even on topics that we disagree with. Cana’s greatest wish is to get Kamnsamida back, but.... we all know how that ends. Next would be just to do right by her and live to the fullest. Tag Time! @cookiesmadeofbirbs @emilliacorwin @lorna-rivercroft @loralynn @vanaleigh @house-morningstar @varic-highsworn @kallie-appleblossom @koraceyn-harper @caersto

What color of colored contacts would you like to have? Blue or green. What’s on your bedside table? My medicine, a package of straws, a cup, my coffee travel mug, a bottle of Coke, a bottle of water, a plastic container with a mini confetti bundt cake inside (SO GOOD), and my empty food container from a bit ago. What’s on your bed? A few pillows, stuffed animals, clothes, blanket, remote, laptop, and a coloring book with colored pencils. Your floor besides furniture? That’s it. Your dresser? My TV, the wifi and cable thingy, a candle, a giraffe statue thingy, and Christmas decorations still lol. The top shelf in your closet? Medical supplies. Are there any dead stuffed animals in your house? I’m not into taxidermy, it freaks me out. Do you know anyone who goes fishing, but doesn’t like fish? No. What’s the best prize you’ve won on an amusement park/carnival game? Giraffe stuffed animal. Have you ever done anything sexual in a school? No. Do you like Moosejaw clothing? Never heard of it. Would you rather like to be a koala or a manatee? Neither, really. Steve-O, Bam, or Johnny Knoxville? I was once really into Jackass and the whole gang.  I had a major thing for Johnny Knoxville. Have you ever been indoor skydiving? No. Would you have any interest in going on a cruise? Part of me does, but also the thought of it is terrifying. Just being out there in the middle of the water... yikes. I can’t swim either so if something happened then I’d be majorly screwed and the thought of drowning also is terrifying. Apart from that, haha, they sound fun.

SATURDAY SIX: 6 Reasons We Love Sailing On The DISNEY CRUISE LINE
This week’s SATURDAY SIX takes a look at Reasons We Love DISNEY CRUISE LINE! For years I put off taking a cruise despite being all but begged by my family. Just as my friends and coworkers don’t understand why we repeatedly keep going to theme parks on vacation, I didn’t understand what they saw in cruising. A couple years ago a funny thing happened, I broke down and agreed to go a cruise. (I know, the definition of first-world problems, right?) Halfway through the sailing, I fell in love with cruising. The penny dropped and I understood. Today we’re going to look at some of our favorite parts of the Disney Cruise Line, starting with…
# 6 – The Characters
Both Disney and Universal are hard at work creating the next generation rides for us to enjoy, but over the years meet and greets have become a bigger part of the average guest’s vacation experience. For many, meeting characters is just as fun as riding an attraction or watching a show. Good news for people considering take a Disney Cruise, there are a ton of character experiences throughout the sailing!

One thing many guests in the Disney parks lament is the loss of “spontaneous” encounters with characters. Because meet and greets are so popular now, the days of characters of just being in the parks and walking up to people are all but gone. Imagine our surprise while on a Disney Cruise when Donald Duck just came over to our shuffleboard game and asked to play.  This was the definition of a Disney “magical moment” and something we will never forget.

  # 5 – Merchandise
Anyone who has read our sister blog – The Magic, The Memories, and Merch! –  knows that we have seen our fair share of Disney merchandise over the years. In fact, we’ve seen more than any person should ever have to see and more than a few items that we can’t forget we saw (no matter how hard we try). All that said, the quality rate for Disney Cruise Line merchandise is higher than any other Disney brand. By far. A lot of thought and attention has gone into making quality items across the line; from t-shirts to high end collectibles to even Tsum Tsums. Other competitors in the cruise market can rival Disney on quality of shows, food, and even characters, but no one comes within a mile 20,000 leagues of touching Disney Cruise Line when it comes to merchandise.

  # 4 –  Star Wars and Marvel Days at Sea
With the upcoming Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in DHS and attractions such as the Guardians of the Galaxy coaster being built in Epcot, theme park fans are finally going to get what they’ve been asking for a long time: more Star Wars and Marvel in the parks. Over the past several years, Disney Cruise Line has introduced Star Wars and Marvel “days at sea” to great fan reaction. Much like how Universal Studios Florida becomes a completely different park during their Halloween Horror Nights event, the Disney ships super serve their guests with Star Wars/Marvel related music, characters, activities, food & drink, shows and – of course – souvenirs.

  # 3 – The Shows
We all have our favorite Walt Disney World shows, and one of our absolute favorite parts of taking a Disney Cruise was the high caliber of shows presented throughout our sailing. Even better, if you couldn’t make it to the theater to see the show in person, the shows were available to watch in your stateroom on TV (imagine being able to watch Finding Nemo – the Musical or Festival of the Lion King from your room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge). With iconic Disney characters and stories, top notch actors and actresses, big budget sets, and family friendly humor, the shows made a perfect cap to our nights on the ship.

  # 2 – Dining
More than anything else, the one thing you need to bring with you on a Disney Cruise is your appetite. The main dining rooms need to be seen to be believed (and you’ll experience them all with DCL’s rotational dining.) Like Be Our Guest Restaurant in the Magic Kingdom, the details in all of the main dining rooms are out of this world. All of the food in the main dining rooms is included with your fare, so if you don’t like one dish, try another one. There are also grab n’ go locations on the ship serving pizza, sandwiches, and ice cream, for no extra cost. For an extra charge guests can dine at restaurants such as Remy or Palo. For our cruise, we ate at Palo for $30 a person and it was comparable – if not better – than a signature dining experience at WDW. Remy is $95 per person and delivers a food and service “experience that is similar to the level you would see at Victoria & Alberts and should be on any Disney foodie’s bucket list.
Most items on the room service menu are “free,” including Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bars! We have a cruise planned for next April, and while one member in our traveling party is thinking about all the excursions we’ll be going on in various Caribbean ports, the only thing on my mind is thinking about which food I’m going to eat every day. One thing is for sure, I will finally be able to answer the age old question of how many Mickey waffles can one person consume.

  # 1 – Castaway Cay
Since becoming fans of cruising, we’ve taken several sailings on various cruise lines and have visited a bunch of islands in the Caribbean. For me, Disney’s Castaway Cay is hands-down the best place we have ever gone to. Castaway Cay has the gorgeous beaches and related activities that we enjoy in other ports, and then sprinkles on top the patented Disney theming and service. We loved snorkeling in the calm waters of the family friendly beaches, and then enjoyed the waves at Serenity Bay (the adults only area.) The private island was also our first time signing up for a runDisney “race” with the Castaway Cay 5k. We have had nothing but great experiences at every port we have ever been to in the Caribbean, but Castaway Cay was a notch above everything else. It’s that good.  (It even had amazing merchandise!)

  HONORABLE MENTION: Pirate Night
Readers of TouringPlans are much more savvy than I was when I went on my first DCL sailing. What I should have done is read articles like What I Wish I Knew Before My First Disney Cruise by Savannah Sanders, or any of the various tips from Laurel Stewart or Erin Foster. Instead, I went in “blind” and when a pair of pirate bandanas and gold coins were left in our stateroom one night, I had no idea it was for pirate night the next day. Many others on the ship already knew about this Disney Cruise Line staple, and packed accordingly. It was fun seeing the elaborate pirate costumes many families wore, along with the DCL staff being “pirates” for the day as well. The characters were in their pirate outfits, and there were special pirate themed shows including an incredible nighttime experience that was capped off with fireworks.

  DOUBLE SECRET HONORABLE MENTION: AquaDuck

  TRIPLE THREAT HONORABLE MENTION: Disembarkation
In my experience, most cruise lines are very good at getting guests ONTO a ship. Getting you OFF the ship is another story entirely. The Disney Cruise Line was amazing. The night before we packed our bags and left them outside our room. We were given luggage tags and told to remember which character we had. The next morning we had our last breakfast on the ship (at Animator’s Palette) and eventually made our way to luggage area where we easily found our stuff in our character’s area. Everything was so simple and easy that it now drives me crazy on other cruise lines when disembarkation is combination of watching paint dry on the ship followed by a recreation of Pamplona’s running of the bulls to a luggage area so confusing it will make you feel like Marcus Brody trying to find his way around in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
