Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Jojo Rabbit walks a delicate line. One scene is laugh-out-loud, darkly comedic. The next is soul-crushing. When you look at it on paper, it shouldn’t work. On the screen, it’s memorable, tender, hilarious and insightful - a picture like none other. There are some who will find it tasteless but for the rest, it's one you'll be compelled to revisit.

In the final years of WWII, Ten-year-old Johannes “Jojo” Betzler (Roman Griffin Davis) dreams of serving in Nazi Germany's army like his absent father. While at Hitler Youth Camp, Jojo follows the advice of his imaginary best friend, a child’s rendition of Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi). After an accident cripples him, he is sent back home. There, he discovers his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is harbouring a Jewish teenaged girl (Thomasin McKenzie).

This film excels at exposing the hypocrisy of the propaganda necessary to keep the Nazi machine (and similar systems) going. Jojo is only a child and even he has difficulty understanding how Elsa can be a demonic creature with horns and wings that drinks blood and can mind control good German boys, is cripplingly fascinated with shiny things and also an enemy the Nazis will easily eliminate. To him, she looks just like a normal girl. None of the interactions they have confirm her as dangerous.

The characters of Elsa, Jojo and his mother are all played relatively straight. Everyone else is a living contradiction. Rebel Wilson plays Fräulein Rahm. Despite being unmarried, she boasts having given birth to 18 children for Germany. How that’s possible, who knows. Her unreleting enthusiasm for the Nazi cause is bizarre considering her job at the Hitler Youth camp is to teach the girls there to dress wounds, take care of the injured… and have children. Not particularly exciting compared to the boys, who get to play with live munitions and enjoy the outdoors. The next noteworthy contradiction within the film is Nazi Germany’s attitude towards children. We’re told they’re the future, that the world will belong to them but as the tide of war shifts, we see the kids become be extremely disposable in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it bit of off-sceen gruesomeness. The whole thing is topped by Taika Waititi’s portrayal of Hitler. Self-described as a Polynesian Jew, even if Waititi wasn’t directing and writing, his casting would feel like a smart, subversive inside joke. As the film begins, this Adolf Hitler is Jojo’s best friend. Once the boy starts questioning what the authorities have been feeding him, Hitler becomes increasingly hostile and comical. He’s more “so pathetic you’re glad you can laugh at him” than “funny because it’s so wrong to see Hitler doing this” kind of funny.

Lest you think this film does not take what happened during WWII seriously, understand that key scenes make you forget all about the fanciful imagination of Jojo’s world and bring you back to reality. The scenes with him and his mother, for example, are surprisingly grounded. You can feel the exhasperation Rosie must feel as her son makes all of these statements about Adolf Hitler, the Nazi cause, Jews and Germany. How frustrating it must be for her to endure what she hears. She could tell Jojo what the truth is, but he's a child. He doesn't understand what's really going on and doesn't understand that admitting the truth out loud could have serious consequences.

Though there are some big, memorable laughs within Jojo Rabbit, the dramatic revelations are so sobering that the drama/comedy split doesn't feel like it's down the middle. Said revelations only come in during the latter half of the movie, however, so they hit you when you least expect it - and hit you hard. This is not the kind of movie you easily forget precisely because it makes bold, bizarre-sounding choices. Though there is a chance you'll be so off-put by "Jojo Rabbit" that it won't be your cup of tea, every move that's being made has been carefully considered and the themes used throughout make it a picture I don't hesitate to recommend. Owned?: No, library Page count: 294 My summary: Johannes is growing up in Nazi-occupied Vienna. Taken in by Adolf Hitler’s ideology, he is astonished to find that his mother was hiding a young Jewish woman, Elsa, in the walls. When his parents disappear, Johannes has to deal with his Nazi ideology, the girl hidden in his house, and his elderly grandmother alone. My rating: 2/5 My commentary:

If the summary of this one sounds like JoJo Rabbit, that’s because this is the book that inspired that movie! Inspired is the word I’m using here, because having read this book, it’s very clear that it has a distinctly different tone and mood from JoJo Rabbit. Whereas the movie is comedic, using that comedy to satirise the beliefs of the Nazis, this book is a lot more serious and darker in tone. And I really found it an unpleasant read, I’m sorry to say.

Obviously trigger warning for Nazis under the cut, but also gaslighting, entrapment, controlling behaviour, and abuse.

So only half of this book is set actually during World War Two - the other half is set after the war, while Johannes tries to keep his little family together in the ruins of occupied Vienna. It’s really only the first half that shows Johannes getting radicalised into Nazi extremism, the rest is the fallout from this. The characters are also a little older - Johannes is about seventeen when he gets injured and discovers Elsa, and Elsa is the same age as his older sister, so she’s an adult by the time this happens.

Why do I call this book unpleasant? Well, you know how in the movie JoJo lies to Elsa and says that Germany won the war, because he’s a little kid and alone in the world but for her and is acting out of panic to preserve whatever status quo he has, but Elsa discovers the truth not too long after? Yeah, in the book, he lies to keep Elsa, and this goes on for years. Johannes has this weird sexual obsession with Elsa, his narration mostly describes her breasts-first, and focuses on how attractive she is or isn’t at any given time over anything else. Over time, his gaslighting of her becomes a deeply toxic sexual relationship, especially after his grandmother dies and the two of them are left alone. He learns that all of her family are dead, and doesn’t tell her. He at first lies and tells her that the Jewish people were sent to Madagascar, then after she talks about going there shows her images from concentration camps to dissuade her, and then is surprised when she’s depressed and tries to kill herself? He lies to her, and he lies to her, and he lies to her, and then in the end she escapes the flat they’re living in and fucks off, and Johannes is left confused and finally, alone.

I get that we are meant to find Johannes’ actions horrific. The book does not glamourise or valorise anything he does. That does not mean that I want to read about this young woman being controlled and abused and gaslighted. I do not want to read the point of view of this loathsome, anti-Semitic, ableist, horrible little man. Elsa isn’t given much of a personality because we’re seeing through his eyes, he sees her as both an angel and a devil sent to tempt and torment him. It’s just nasty, though intentionally, and I very much did not enjoy it.

as someone who flies a lot, do you have any tips on getting over a fear of flying?

Not really! I've never had that fear and I'm not really the best when it comes to things like this. For instance, I have had a very strong fear of water for most of my life and to combat it, every summer I do something dangerous and adrenaline-inducing that involves water, thinking "this is me conquering my fear." And every year I survive with the fear intact. So I really don't know. My advice would be something like "Go sky diving. You'll have a terrible time but maybe it'll do something for you."

The sound of a soft record scratch as he put the needle down against the vinyl, and a soft tune began to play. Orchestrated to play softly, Zhongli makes his way back to where Fu Hua was standing.

"May I have this dance, and this evening with you?"

For this was one the many of gifts he had to give her.

In all honesty, she was quite startled that he had remembered to keep his Nightium on hand rather than to have the Lins foot the bill for him. Perhaps he was now better in remembering that the Guild was already hard enough on times that they could no longer manage such a thing? Regardless, there’s a faint smile tracing her lips as the appetizing aroma of the myriad of traditional Longzhou dishes wafts through the air. Crystal shrimp, savory gān guō with generous helpings of meat and fish, xiao long bao, and phoenix buns--Zhongli had truly outdone himself this time.

Today was the day that she had graduated from avian form to one that was much more human, even if there were remnants of her time as a phoenix evident in her features at times, namely when utilizing her Luminatics. The feathers normally adopted a color more akin to her general hair color, a dark azure that contrasted the expensive, cream-colored silk adorned with blue and gold qipao that she had been gifted a long while ago.

“You went through the trouble of having something so elaborate made for me, how could I not?”

There is no accusation in the Fiendling’s voice, merely matter-of-fact--This dress was quite important to her, enough that she seldom wore it unless requested or a particularly formal event had come about that required her presence. As if by second nature, she accepts his hand, fingers delicately resting atop his until they are forced to part for a time once she is personally escorted into a more open space. 

As the unmistakable sound of a pipa being gently plucked at before the singer’s voice gradually joins, Zhongli extending his hand out to her after making that request leaves her surprised for a moment.

“...!”

There is but a small pause, before she once again accepts his hand with a soft shake of her head in disbelief, but a gentle, soft smile brimming with emotion.

“ ....Dāngrán, xiǎo huàidàn.“
