Caitlyn McCormack- Sex and Gender
Sex and gender are two terms that are often used interchangeably. In reality though these two terms are about two very different things. Sex is defined as the physical or physiological differences between men and women including both primary sex characteristics such as reproductive organs, and secondary characteristics such as height and muscularity. While gender is defined as the social or cultural distinctions associated with being male or female. Gender is often something that shapes the way people view themselves from a very young age. The way that people interact with a child very much determines how that child identifies or feels that they must identify. For example, if a little boy wants to play with dolls but hears from his dad that little boys play with trucks and that dolls are for girls and sissy boys, this little boy might start to hate dolls and act in a way he thinks is tough. This interaction shows how influential the early years of a child’s life are in developing how they view their gender roles.
In the video clip from the movie The Incredibles, we see the two characters Mr. Incredible and Syndrome meet for the first time since Syndrome was just a little boy named Buddy. Syndrome talks about how he was “crushed” when Mr. Incredible turned him away when he wanted to be his side kick and told him he “worked alone”. This changed something in little Buddy’s mind and made him think that real men work alone and are not good guys. That one moment in his childhood shaped him into the villain he became as an adult. Although that moment seemed insignificant to Mr. Incredible it was extremely important in Buddy’s life. This goes to show how things that we say and the way we act with children that we think are inconsequential can make a much bigger difference than we ever imagined. That should make us think twice before we say or do something during that crucial time in a child’s life.

Caitlyn McCormack- Socialization
The technical definition for socialization is the process by which society molds its members into properly social beings. It is the process by which people acquire cultural competency and through which society perpetuates the fundamental nature of existing social structures. Basically socialization is the process of how we become who we are. It is most intense in the early stages of childhood and can even begin before a child is born. Before a baby is even born the parents begin to decorate the baby’s room, buy clothes, pick out names, etc all based solely on the sex of the baby. These seemingly harmless tasks actually do a lot to shape that baby in the first few years of their life. The process of socialization also brings up the topic of nature versus nature in which questions whether it is genetics or the upbringing of a person that truly influences the person they are molded into. Socialization generally occurs through a combination of five agents of socialization; the family, school, peer groups, mass media, and the workplace. All of the agents influence both the way an individual sees the world and how they see themselves.
In the video clip from the popular tv show “Shameless” we see the character Lip talking to his younger sister Debs about his drinking habits. Both characters have grown up in a poverty-stricken family with a mom that abandoned them at a young age and a father (Frank) with an intense alcohol addiction that frequently causes the family problems. Debs tells Lip in the clip that she “doesn’t want him to turn out like Frank”. It is very clear that while this is not what Lip wants to happen he feels that he is almost on a path that he cannot get off of. Drinking heavily to deal with any of life’s problems or successes is something that has surrounded Lip his entire life in his family, the mass media, and in his peer groups in the community. He learned that he did not need to accomplish much in life because no one else around him had and that was just the norm of the neighborhood. While Lip knows that he is capable of more the process of socialization has such a deep rooted hold on him that he is beginning to get pulled into the ways of his father and community as a whole.

Caitlyn McCormack- Race and Ethnicity
Racism is an issue that is still a substantial problem in many places around the world including the US. Race is defined as the superficial physical differences that a particular society considers significant. While in some cases race can be a positive thing that helps someone with a source of identity and belonging, it can often get used as a negative thing that allows someone to discriminate against a group of people based on nothing but preconceived notions of what that group is like. Race and Ethnicity however are two very different things. Race is a group’s outward appearance while ethnicity is the shared cultural practices, perspectives, and distinctions that set apart one group of people from another. Before taking this class I was not aware that these two things were different things, nor did I really ever think about the fact that someone could be prejudice towards not just race but ethnicity.
The video clip from the show “The Office” addresses how people interact with different races and ethnicities. The boss, Michael, tells everyone to take a card and put it on their forehead so that everyone can treat you like the race/ethnicity on the card. Most of the characters are visibly uncomfortable with this and try to treat each other with respect no matter what race or ethnicity they had on their forehead. Michael keeps pushing people to go a step farther and really say racist things to each other. When no one is following his directions Michael decides to demonstrate and starts talking to Kelly in an Indian accent using various stereotypical statements to try and get a reaction out of her. When Kelly gets upset and slaps Michael he makes the statement “Now she knows what it’s like to be a minority”. While this scene takes a funny approach to a very serious problem it does show how easy to say offensive things to someone without realizing what you said was inconsiderate. Taking small steps just to watch what we say would make a major difference in how we treat each other no matter what race or ethnicity the other person is.
