Google Calendar app stops support for older android versions

Google, a multinational technology company, is dropping support for its Calendar app on specific devices, effective from December 2023. This is a significant update for a majority of Android users who have long favored Google’s collection of apps over the default ones. The preference arises from the convenience of having Google apps pre-installed on all Android devices, ensuring smoother data transfers regardless of the device’s manufacturer.

However, with the coming discontinuation of the Google Calendar App for selected users, adjustments may be necessary before the change comes into effect. Despite this news, it’s essential not to panic, as the situation might not be as concerning as it initially sounds.

Which smartphones will no longer support the Calendar App?

The smartphones operating on Android 7.1 or older versions will no longer be able to use the Google Calendar app. The Android 7.1, known as Android Nougat, made its debut approximately 7 years ago in 2016. To put it in context, by December 2022, only 1.6 percent of Android devices were still running on Android 7.1.

And the category is... calendar apps.

Why?

Because there are, there is information that routinely slips through, slips by our awareness. Completely leapfrogs the categories of Things We Need To Remember and Things We Need to Remember To Do.

They're related, of course, these categories. One leans more toward deadlines. The other leans more toward events.

I actually googled Best Family Calendar App to get a sense of what we're talking about. The first hit had a line that clarified the picture for me immediately.

Figure out your stress-points to find the right app for your family

I wouldn't automatically assume that makes sense. But the way it made sense to me immediately was something like figure out where you fail.

Figure out.

Where you fail.

For us, where a calendar app is concerned, what are the deadlines we historically struggle with? What are the areas where we have trouble coordinating our efforts?

That's the To Do List side of things.

On the Events side of things, there's this:

What's the thing we keep asking Hey, when's this gonna happen?

That is, and always will be

When's your next gig?

Where are you playing next month?

Which is all about Liny's schedule between winery gigs, Midnight High gigs, Little Lies gigs, private event gigs, and future Dream Patrol gigs. There are so many elements in her schedule that we lose track almost immediately.

I'm also gonna make one for our individual and family travels. Because those are planned well in advance... and then we sort of forget about them. Until they jump out at us at nearly the last minute.

Now, the list of apps I'm looking at is a varied lot. The second app, though, jumps out at me because it's like this: you can have different calendars for different kinds of concerns. And you can share each of those calendars with different people. BAM, then. That's the one I download.

The first calendar I made is LinzyGIGs which captures every performance on her calendar, available in real time to Kimmer.

The second calendar I will make will be a weekly bills calendar because yeah. We need one.

The third calendar I'll make is a business calendar that's mostly admin (our least favorite thing).

The fourth calendar I'll make will keep track of our individual and family travels.

The fifth and sixth will be Kimmer's work schedule and then her doctoral program schedule.

And so on.

It's a helluva thing when you actually think about this stuff how much we're actually keeping track of.

Or not.

Mostly or not. A lot of events and deadlines still surprise us like

Oh that's today???

So with this calendar app you can have a bunch of different calendars. I've described six so far. And any time you click on the icon for one of those calendars, that calendar shows up on your screen. You move between calendars like this.

However.

You can also overlay one calendar over another. Over another. Over another. So, for example, we have a calendar of Linzy's gigs. We have a calendar of travels. Put them together and we can spot those times we're on the road when Linzy's performing. Or. We have a calendar of Kimmer's work schedule. We have a calendar of her doctoral program schedule. Put them together and we can spot where there's too much pressure on a given day. Or a given hour. Or a given week.

Or with a click and a click, we can spot when Kimmer's gotta take work and doctoral studies on the road and if it would be better to not.

Once upon a time, we used an app called Cozi. At the time it made sense for family things and sending reminders to all of us or some of us and so on. There was a lot to coordinate, keep track of. Today though, we need more help balancing, in a way, the things we've gotta do with the things we want to do. And the more I think about that, the more obvious it seems that those details are getting lost, obscured by all the different categories within which we have to remember deadlines, dates, and possibilities.

We'll begin, then, with putting space between those categories so we can consider each one in context, consider each one against the others...

And see how that helps.

One thing I will never understand as someone who is very ADHD is how many other people with ADHD are like "I could never use a planner, planners don't work for me. I hate when neurotypicals say "just get a planner!"*

Like we have the "easily forget things" disorder and you don't wanna write things down??? Idk how you think you're going to cope with that but I, personally, must have a list of some kind. If it's not written out it doesn't exist to me. Why is there some community driven idea that we cannot use planners/to-do lists because of our ADHD? A planner is like, literally the most basic coping mechanism for the disorder.

I genuinely don't know what else you can do to remember a list of tasks other than write them down somehow. Are you guys just like, trying to convince your brains to be better at memory or something?

The Wintersea Republic and the Free State: Different Age lengths?

I was going to save this until my Hollowpox reread post, but I’ve hit a snag in my eternal reread and now I don’t know when I’ll share that. This is something I noticed that I didn’t fully realize before. This is specifically about post-Massacre Ages. Pre-Massacre stuff is still currently a Wild West of unknowns.

The Wintersea Republic seems to have consistently had 10-12 year Ages since it was formed. This lines up with the amount of Ages it has had and how long it’s been around for. This consistency is also how Squall establishes the “curse.”

I had always assumed that Ages were consistent among the Realm, so that Nevermoor has also been experiencing these same Age lengths for the same amount of time. This is because at the beginning of the first book we see that their Morningtides align. This is where my theory about Wundersmith deaths or Wunder irregularities causing Eventides at the end of years comes from, because it seems likely that that’s what triggered this Eventide and likely all the ones related to the “curse”.

However, in ch2 of Hollowpox, Jupiter says the following:

“Golders Night,” Holliday echoed, and her expression grew thoughtful. She tapped a finger against her mouth. “There’s a thought… what’s it been, twelve years since the last one?” “Fourteen, I believe,” said Jupiter. “Spring of Seventeen in the Age of Poets. ”

So, 14 years ago, Nevermoor was in the midst of an Age that was at least 17 years long? Now I'm less sure what triggers Eventides/new Ages, especially in the Free State...

I find it unlikely that the Republic also experienced this same 17 year Age, as the fairly consistent Ages seems to be how Squall establishes the Eventide Curse... HOWEVER..... Morrigan turns 13 in Hollowpox... so this would have been the Age before her, and it might've actually been more like 18 (or 19? I'm bad at math) years long? Maybe Squall did something new the Age before Mog, like tried to take on an apprentice or two before her, or carry out some plan (or study?) with the other cursed children. The abnormally long Age could be balanced out by some of the earlier Ages in the lifespan of the Wintersea Republic being considerably short in comparison.

I would love to hear anyone's own thoughts on this! It's something I realized and now am trying to figure out how it fits with everything because I never really thought about it before.

Currently exploring Time Tree calendar app to track the pain scale for my migraine. I LOVE love the part where I can edit the Label List and shift it as my pain scale label and arrange them according to colours + level.

BUT-

the best part of this app is that I can create separate calendars; one shared with housemates, one for work, one personal AND have notification sets at variety of timings.

And then you can also set for other people who are in the shared calendar as you. So if we have to remind our housemates about not being around, we will just enter the thing in the calendar and then have it pop in their notifications as reminder.

If you have ADHD or struggle with executive dysfunctions, it shifts the responsibility alone on you to others to help remind you as well as you with others.

Today I am making a serious effort to get my shit in order!

I’m trying out a new to-do list app (To Do by microsoft) and revamping the point tracker app I’ve used for positive reinforcement off and on for years (Tally). My goal is to take advantage my adhd’s love of Cross Item Off List and Number Go Up with these. I have high hopes for the to-do app’s ability to automate some things for me but will need to poke around a bit more and see how it works.

The adhd meds are definitely giving me the focus/energy to get this all set up, but I’m hoping to establish things in such a way that it will continue to be helpful even when I’m struggling. Like for example, when the new semester starts kicking my ass 😅
