timeskip!iwaizumi learned to surf during college. when he moved to california he was immediately drawn to the beach, and some of his college friends introduced him to the lovely pastime of surfing. at first he wanted to longboard, in love with the grace of it, but all his friends were shortboarders so that's what he learned to do. with time, he too grew an affinity for the stunts. by the end of his college career he was going out every morning with his buddies, and more likely than not, he ended up meeting you on the beach. if you already surf, he's glad to bring you into his group, and if you don't know yet, he'll do his best to teach you. unless, of course, you'd rather watch him

on the topic of billy's hair, i've always headcanoned that the improvement in curls from s2 to s3 is not only bc of better styling/products (in universe, and probably a higher budget for wigs out of universe lol) but also bc he has been away from the ocean for a while.

i think it's mentioned, either in the show or in runaway max, that billy spent as much time away from home and neil as possible back in cali and we know he loves to surf so i imagine quite a bit of his time was spent at the beach, in the water.

while some hair likes salt, billy's hair texture looks like the type that would get coarse with an overload of it and the ocean water would strip his hair of its natural oils and moisture, making it look somewhat dull and leading to breakage and frizz. so while we get (and love) the rat mullet in season 2, by the time season 3 rolls around his hair has healed from a good portion of the damage and looks more bouncy and moisturized.

whether this would last over the summer with his lifeguard job and the chlorine from the pool is something we never find out, unfortunately.
