been dealing with some artblock lately but it is how it is y’know. anyway here’s the sketch on its own and just the colors

sketch was done traditionally, colors are digital

huge fan of hitting characters with the catification beam. been doing it for years, very fun. definitely want to do more with rand’s design if i draw them as cats again in the future, since i didn’t really do all that much with him. really like how kian and rolan turned out though ¦]

also thinking about a cat design for becky, i’m thinking perhaps a tortie or calico with emphasis on the black parts, with some really saturated reds, though these designs are in no way grounded in realism (except for maybe rand but 🤷) so there’s a lot that can be done. endless possibilities

woohoo we're in a decade i know at least semi well – and we're closing out the nineteenth century.

in this decade, we saw the return of puff sleeves, eventually forming the iconic leg o' mutton shape thats synonymous with women's fashion in the 1890s. the shape of the skirt started close to the body, and then widened out into a "bell", with hemlines nearly always reaching the ground or just above it. the hat craze continued, and hats would often be made to match the outfit or the circumstance one would wear it. while there was an intense amount of social norms regarding dress, restrictions loosened as the decade went on. why, some women were even wearing trousers as they played sports! we also saw the rise of the iconic gibson girl, a fashion icon that would persist through the 1890s and the 1900s.

Seeing Bill scurry away with a teeny tiny kitten in his palm and most certainly a few more in his shirt made Becky's chest throb with love.

Or maybe she was out of breath trying to keep up with his long strides.

He had finally stopped, a sheepish flush on his cheeks as he held an arm to his chest to hold the hidden ones secure, and cradled the tiny calico in his free hand.

"Bill... Its okay."

"But they were so cold Becky..." His pout and sad eyes gave Becky another chest twinge.

He held the one out to her to inspect. It's eyes were barely open, it's little tail just a triangle of fluff. It's itty bitty paws kneaded at his calloused palms, it's purr bigger then it's body.

"How many Bill?" She took the purring calico so he could pull them all out for inspection.

Three tiny kittens, a tortie, a tabby, and a little tuxedo meowed in protest at leaving the cozy space of Bill's chest.

She'd complain too.

"They're just babies" he cooed, making Becky's insides melt at the tone.

Heaven help her if she saw him with an actual infant in his hands...

So I had this au idea where the facility people are the ones who find Becky and Bob after the ship crashed. The make Bob into a bioweapon frankenstein through brainwashing and experimentation. Becky they splice bob's monkey genes into her. Becky had a rough time being forced to grow up in the facility alone. Poor kid has terrible social skills. They only gave her a minor education to keep her under their thumb and not give her any opportunity to explore her own self. One day, Becky is able to escape where she winds up in Fair City and into the warehouse lair of two of the city's top villains. Steven Boxleitner and his wife Carrie were a highly renowned scientist team with Steven being a skilled geneticist/biochemist/inventor and Carrie being a skilled biologist (like you Chucktopia Carrie) and animal expert. They were working together on a mind reading device to read the minds of a vicious mouse called Squeaky and a feral cat called diamond. Unfortunately an accident caused them to fuse with the creatures and made them into evil villains known as Dr. Two Brains and Dr. Calico. Dr. Two Brains is still stealing cheese and causing property damage as well. Dr. Calico (Melody's villain name for swap Carrie) steals fish and shiny, valuable objects. They do their own thing but when they do work together, no one is a match to stop them, not even the local heroes Amazo Guy and Kid Math, Amazo Guy's protege. One day this feral monkey hybrid child comes into their lair and the two villains end up adopting her and raising her. They recognize she is an intelligent and smart child who went through something serious in her life. So they raise her as a child rather than a potential villain. They would let her join them if she wants to. They give her the name Becky Mouse Claws.

Basically its an au where Becky has escaped the facility into Fair City, is found by villain Carrie and her husband Steven aka Dr. Two Brains. They just go this is our child and raise her and help her get into society and schooling.

FAS3003 Pattern Cutting

After having my designs approved by Becky, I decided to begin pattern cutting and creating the basis of the costume. 

The main focus was the top to go underneath the wrapping that I shall dye in order to add some structure to the costume and provide easier changes for the actress. With Paula’s help, I created a pattern of a top that would be fitted, sleeveless, and have a zip join at the back. Photos of the final piece on calico can be seen above. I’m really pleased with this and plan to begin exploring the best fabric choices for it in the coming days. Indeed, I cannot use a fabric that is too stretchy as this could cause issues with the draping of the wrap above. I hope that this will be rather tightly fitted to the actress to achieve the desired effect, however this is something I will not be able to ensure until the fitting. 

I also created the pattern for the shorts, as pictured above. With these, I had some freedom in experimenting with the different lengths I could use, but decided to place it a few inches above the knee. Again, for now I am pleased with these, but need to ensure the measurements and sizing is correct before I can guarantee they are as I envisioned. Paula helped me to add a zip to the pattern for a front fly as we decided it would be a good opportunity to challenge my construction skills. 

To further my development, I plan to begin fabric shopping and buying blazers to break down to accelerate the process of building the costume. I shall also continue my research to ensure all my upcoming decisions are informed.

Update: since creating the toile, I have made moderations to elements of the top and shorts, like lowering the neckline and back, and shortening the shorts. Images of these changes can be seen above. I remade my toile with the new pattern to ensure everything still matched, making me ready to cut my final pieces. This has made me far more content with the undershirt in particular as it now should not be visible under the draping.

If less is more, I’ve been accomplishing my goals. Where to start? My spouse died the day after my brother was put in Hospice Care and my daughter moved in to tend to him. Sister Beckie wasn’t speaking to me. The rage about her current state is manifold. Macular Degeneration (the family curse), Osteoporosis (the result of a host of bad decisions), and mental illness (which should be in ALL CAPS). My brother specified in his will that he wants someone to live in his house until the cat dies. Then what? By the way, the cat came to my house and she is called Marabella, a tortoise-calico whose markings are only equaled by her neediness.

Mercifully, Jack designated an executor from his AA group. She is spending his money on the renovation, which is extensive. Even the kitchen cabinets went! The only appliance left is the stove. In a time of supply chain issues, I don’t mind waiting for the flooring, the bathrooms (black mold!), and other indoor work to be completed. The place is painted. I like their choice of colors.

Are these good problems to have or have I taken a long walk off a short pier? The yard was raked (heavy equipment! Everything slopes toward the house!) and there will need to be a French [named after the man, not the country] Drain or other catchment basins for sequestering what moisture we can in the 1/4 acre lot. In front, concrete dominates the approach, which is a pity. There used to be a planter in front of the bedroom window of the ranch-style home with fireplace.

No trees, only the nasty customer called Arundo (bamboo) that will. Not. Die. It’s a clean slate. I have plants in pots here that I can take there. An apricot tree, a couple of citrus that are barely hanging on, setting fruit in their above-ground planter pots. A Crape Myrtle that needs a better home (and has a polite growth habit, not like the thug that was a Brazilain Pepper tree and by the garage, a Japanese Black Pine, both of which were affecting the foundation.

I rue the removal of a majestic African Giant Bird of Paradise and a Cape Honeysuckle, but these are not natives. The Agave patch was native, but one is plenty and 20 are impenetrable. My brother-in-law has more in his postage-stamp of a yard in Mission Hills where the streets have alphabetical bird names beginning with Albatross. The City’s first plant nursery, founded by Kate Sessions herself, is in their neighborhood. But I digress. There’s always more.

I embarrass myself a lot.Well there was this one time where I made a presentation for English about like internet/fan culture but I was p young at this point so I made it badly.At one point I did examples of good videos on YouTube and bad videos. I found a funny song thing that the class found funny so that was Gucci, and then for the bad example I played a danisnotonfire edit that my friend dared me to put in, and it was to that song yk that ‘boom boom boom boom I want you in my room’ that one, and I don’t think anyone got the point that it was meant to be like an example of cringe fan culture and they all just thought I was a psycho and gave me strange looks and everyone probably thought I was deranged at the end of the presentation oof never again why wasn’t I ill that day?

      Literally, it’s taken me a couple days to get to posting this because it’s ... the sweetest and cutest thing ever and idk. I’ve been in such a weird head-space that every single time I look at it, I kind of start crying all over again because I’m just in this really... not okay spot? I don’t know. And this is so god damn sweet and it really warms my heart right up.

NOVEMBER

Another working week! It was Becky's birthday at work on Wednesday so we had cake and a joint lunch. This week I have been working on a solo project at work making trousers. This is the first time i have ever made trousers apart from my toile. I have found this task really challenging especially the pockets. I am currently the main seamstress at work and have been doing mainly pattern cutting and sewing at work. I have been making and cutting out toiles in calico which has really helped me develop my sewing skills and pattern cutting knowledge. This will definitely help me with my uni work come new year.

 I feel as this placement is slowly wearing me down as I feel more unhappy as the days go on- I am learning so much things I could never learn at uni but it is definitely at a cost. Mentally I am very low and after speaking with my parents I have decided to finish placement at the end of November instead of the 10th of December. My parents pushed me to make this decision as they are not happy with the way I am being treated at placement- I agree ! but it has taken me a lot of thought to make this decision.
