Medicago polymorpha (California burclover, toothed bur clover, toothed medick and burr medic, Люцерна мінлива, Люцерна Изменчивая).
Etymology: The genus “Medicago” is from the Greek word "Medlick" or "medick" meaning alfalfa (люцерна) and the species epithet polymorpha means many forms or variable.
Clade:Rosids
Order:Fabales
Family:Fabaceae
Subfamily:Faboideae
Genus:Medicago
It is native to the Mediterranean basin but is found throughout the world. It forms a symbiotic relationship with the bacterium Sinorhizobium medicae, which is capable of nitrogen fixation.
The plant is edible and consumed as a vegetable in China, primarily in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai. Its Chinese culinary names include 草頭 (Wu tsho-doe, Mandarin Pinyin cǎo tóu), 金花菜 (Wu cin-hau tse, Mandarin Pinyin jīn huā cài), 三叶菜 (sān yè cài) and 秧草 (yāng cǎo), while 南苜蓿 (nán mùxu) is its scientific name. It is also consumed in indigenous Otomanguean communities in Southern Mexico. In the Triqui language it is known as kkweej chakáj, meaning 'edible green (of the) pig.'

#1776 - Medicago polymorpha - Burr Medic
Tumblr media
“Pardon me, are you Aaron Burr, sir?”
No, but it is a very annoying weed also known as California burclover, toothed bur clover, and toothed medick.
As you might have guessed from the common names, the leaves closely resemble those of clover. It and the other Medics are annual broadleafed forbs (forb being a new term for me, meaning any groundcover that isn’t a grass, rush, or sedge) that die off in summer leaving hundreds of ferociously hooked, tightly coiled pods that catch on fur, clothing, delicate skin, etc. See the close-up of the pods, each under 1cm in size, above. Once it gets established in your lawn you’ll be spending every year trying to uproot the stuff, which is difficult since the runners can be over 60cm long and it sends down taproots. And, of course, it’s also producing hundreds of seeds for next year.
Originally native to the Meditarranean basin, but now found in most parts of the world, usually in disturbed soil and roadsides. Oddly enough it is edible, and is collected for food in parts of China. Like other legumes, it fixes nitrogen with the help of symbiotic bacteria - in this case Sinorhizobium medicae.
My yard, Perth. I must have pulled up buckets of the stuff, just from around my ponds, this year.

Two Cups Of Yellow
Two Cups Of Yellow
We Share
Before us are two cups of yellow to hold our dreams. I handle them carefully and keep them level, because every drop they protect is precious. Sweet like honey and rich like butter, my dreams warm in the sun and grow sweeter when shared. And so I sit with my sister who with every passing day is ever more my friend, and we share. I offer up my dreams and show them to her, hoping for a…
