The Doctrine of Discovery
When I first started working as a youth minister at the Mission in San Juan Capistrano, I was struck by the small inscription on the back of my business card: “Established 1776”. It was my first realization that the history of California is more Catholic than it is American. This may have been why conversations about things like the lasting effects of the Civil War and the Confederacy didn’t feel that present to me– I never felt very American in the first place.
But regardless of how much connection I felt to the sins of my country’s past, it was a no-brainer that I was responsible for being part of the healing and reconciliation of its future. That same idea applies to the sins of the Catholic Church in my home state.
In the late 1700s, all along the coast of modern-day California, the Catholic Mission system acted as the pacifying arm of the Spanish assault on Native land, language, and lives. As one nation began its ascent on the East coast of the continent, the decline of many Nations was underway in the West, spurred by the evangelizing efforts of the Church and the padres. These actions were justified by the Doctrine of Discovery, a series of Papal decrees that affirmed the right of European explorers to claim the lands of non-christians for the Church in the name of evangelization. It’s the reason why Catholics believe we have more of a right to Native lands than Native peoples do. Put more plainly: it’s an ideology of Christian supremacy that lies in the foundation of every parish in California.
This is the stained reality that we have inherited and are ultimately called to respond to. But how?
Maybe the response includes the creation of a new doctrine. Maybe it includes reparations. Maybe it includes giving land back. It will definitely require more than what those in power (e.g. our current Bishops) are willing to give up– and I’m sure that may be scary to some Catholics. But I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling that inaction in this space– continuing to uphold an attitude of Christian supremacy– is the scarier alternative.
