some of the gayest things i did w my girl besties as a kid that haunt me daily even though i'm almost 25
laying on the hot cement of the playground watching the clouds, talking about which boys we'd date in class, and i look over at her and notice how the sun is turning her black hair slightly red in the sun and sigh and say "i wish i were a boy, 'cause then i'd date you"
made a new best friend a little after her who was a year younger than me and i wanted to live inside her skin, a little bit, and went over to her house constantly. i drew her silly art, those weird emo blobs from the mid aughts, and she hung it up on her door. we joked about being married a lot. when i had to move away across the country, one night i was staring up at the moon while listening to a love song and started sobbing wondering if she was also looking at the moon. i never texted her again.
when i was 12 i fell in love with a girl for the first time i knew about. i had just gotten over being weirded out by gay people & when the kids in class started whispering about us being dykes, my teacher called home about it. i cried my eyes out in a red pickup truck with my mom as i told her i was in love with her, but it was fine because she was straight. i was drinking a red slushie.
once with that same girl, we went on a field trip to a nearby science museum. it was within walking distance and she held my hand the whole way, even though we were too old for it. at some point i started swinging her hand and knocking into her and laughing and eventually she just picked me up, put me on her back, and carried me the rest of the way while we laughed. at the museum, she kept finding me and holding my hand again. i went home that night, so giddy, and just kept thinking about her hand in mine and didn't even care about what the rest of the kids were whispering
in february, before that, she'd asked me which girl i had a crush on in class because i'd posted about it on tumblr. it took me a half hour to finally tell her it was her, blushing to my ears as we walked around the perimeter of the playground (we were at a small private school with less than 100 students, so even the middle schoolers got to use the playground), refusing to look at her. she told me she didn't feel like that, but i was still her best friend and she wasn't mad at me or weirded out. if one of us were boys, she said, maybe it would've worked out. her mom moved her back to california at the end of the school year. i never saw her again and she wasn't allowed to talk to me. she messaged me once, years later on here, to tell me i was pretty in a prom dress i'd tried on. she blocked me later.
i wrote down a story about her, a year later, for 8th grade english class. in it, i imagined that she'd never left, and that she'd kissed me while we laid in the grass, mixing up my stories and my life. my teacher looked at me with such a soft sadness and told me it was very beautifully written. she wanted me to submit it to a contest. it won.

Karaoke night at the Statehouse!
What else are Bon and Jovi singing?
Inspired by the latest FMISC episode, of course! Poor Cali still can't catch a break.
Aaanyyyyway I've had Covid for almost a week and I'm barely alive rn. 😭 The symptoms are sore throat, cough, headache, and forgetting how to draw, apparently.

Upon hearing that George Santos got expelled from Congress, I was reminded of this conversation from "Table News: Bags... on Ice!":
Gov: Do we have any real news we need to cover?
New York: Nope, let's go home.
California: YES- we talked about this!
New York: No, you talked about it.
Flo: Oh my gosh, are you guys married now?
California: No, we were just talking about how much of a blunder this whole George Santos thing is for Republicans.
New York: You're making a mistake.
Cal: Let me fight my battles!
Loui: Dey for sho married.
Gov: Are we talking about something or not?
Cal: I just think it's funny that Republicans have been waging war on drag queens and now there's a whole video out with one of them dressed as a drag queen.
When I was reading about the whole George Santos thing, my first thought honestly was "I'm surprised this dude lasted this long in office." (he was in office for under a year, but still). The guy was plagued with scandals the entire time he held his spot in office, one of the first ones being the one mentioned above where there was video footage of him in drag despite saying he's against it. And now, he's charged with using campaign money to enrich himself & multiple federal crimes. Interesting.
Onto the good part: CALIYORK/YORKCALI <33 I like to think that before this meeting started, Cal approached a tired New York with an article on this specific scandal in hand and was like, "Can't believe this idiot is from you, dude." And despite New York being tired, he let Cal ramble about the whole scandal, even adding on to what Cal says at times, because he secretly enjoys his company :D If Ben does Table News at some point again and George Santos' expulsion is mentioned, we gotta have CaliYork talk about it-
Special mentions to Flo and Loui for being the best wingmen ever. Haha move over Cupid, they've got it from here 😄 (side note: why did Flo ask them, "are you guys married now?" were they planning to get married before-)

York idly kicked the edge of the seat of Cal’s chair.
This is one of I think many more doodles to come from the amazing fic by @thesbian-who-writes (heres the fic)
I’ll have you know that I was on the floor in a puddle because I melted from all the sweetness and fluff and love its such a good fic... definitely becoming a new comfort fic for sure >:3

just finished the rwrb movie and although i really enjoyed it (and was kicking my feet giggling the whole time) i do have a couple of major criticisms, some of which i think aren’t really the movie’s fault because they had to fit a whole book into 2 hours, but some of which left me kind of disappointed:
-i feel slightly icky that bea and nora got their screentime SIGNIFICANTLY reduced even after june got cut entirely (which i was upset about, but did understand). i loved zahra and adored her on screen but i do think it’s very odd that she is pretty much the only major female character in this movie since bea was nonexistent and nora got permanently spirited away to pez’s bed or something sometime during the second act
-it felt like a lot of the internal conflict in alex and henry’s relationship was very unbalanced and henry heavy - alex’s neurodivergence was erased, his bi epiphany was barely even an epiphany, and him not being explicitly kicked off the campaign after ellen finds out about him and henry essentially killed his whole subplot about realising he doesn’t need to have everything achieved at thirty and deciding he wants to apply to law school instead. which wouldn’t have been terrible but on the flipside it felt weird that we didn’t see very much of henry’s family considering how much they affect and shape his fear of being outed and his feeling of being in a glass cage - e.g bea’s treatment by the media during her active addiction (which was entirely erased), the extent of the tension between him and philip. felt like henry’s pov scenes were a super wasted opportunity for that and we were mostly just being Told about all of these things
-i am not actually that mad about oscar and ellen still being together lol but i felt like in the scene with oscar smoking the cigar on the balcony they were kinda building up to there being significant strain in his and ellen’s relationship that just wasn’t explored. especially since it’s clear oscar would never be able to be president because he’s not a natural born citizen + the sacrifice of his career for ellen’s is so much bigger now that he’s first gentleman in this version
-pacing in general was a bit off but the worst offender was the fact that there was a complete time skip between the alex henry confrontation/reconciliation and the outing. so much of the tension and desperation from that outing scene comes from the fact that the risk of it happening was slowly increasing throughout the book and it felt almost inevitable (the elevator cctv being leaked, henry having to fake date june) and honestly making it so abrupt weirdly reduced a lot of its impact for me
-similarly i actually completely understand why the richards plot / rafael luna plot was cut (i suspect republican election interference hits a bit too close to home after 2020) but my god was miguel a lame fucking villain and him being queer and hispanic erased a lot of the original commentary about racism and homophobia that the richards plot lent itself to. like in general this movie was a lot lighter than the book which is fine! but for a movie where the main subplot is a presidential election So Much of the political themes were heavily neutered or cut to the point that it seemed like the pressure on henry and alex’s relationship was disproportionately coming from henry’s side when in the book it was more balanced
again on the whole i really really loved this movie and i knew going in that certain changed were going to be made. and i hope more movies get made like it! these r just my Thots and i may change my mind when i rewatch it with my friend tomorrow
