Hi!
Its me again!
So, I was wondering, how do you learn more styles? I saw one a while ago, that I really liked, so I just copied it and saw what I had to do with the different letters and stuff, but every other style ever just doesn't come to me. I only know how to use one style, so I was wondering if you had any tips regarding how to widen my style choices? Also, what styles/types would you suggest for a beginner?
Hope you are having a great day!
:)
Hello again anon! this answer is a lot longer so its just gonna be under the cut, but i go over different types of nibs and i’ve included examples as well!
Actually copying is how you learn styles! Often you have to find out the type of nib they’re using (nibs are the tip of the pen where ink is stored) often different styles require different types of nibs or pressure.
If you want a style that is thinner then I’d recommend ones that have a similar look to these: (i do not know names i got these a long time ago)

If you want styles that are more thick then your going to want nibs that look like this, these often make bold strokes (pictured below)

You can always experiment with styles, I personally do a thin nib with loopy tight lettering, but bold is a common style (my loopy one is pictured below). A lot of it depends on how much you know, such as how the letters are formed, when i started out i had a tutorial that explained everything. (examples down below, they’re old and bad). the pens pictured below are the ones i use most commonly, the one on the left i use for writing, its my go to pen hence why i picked that nib.

Sometimes you can buy fountain pens (which are similar to these types) and those pens have built in ink cartridges and often have the thick strokes most types of calligraphy you’ll see done on the internet has.  Examples (mentioned in the above paragraphs):

adapting styles is just learning how to copy someone else’s, trying new nibs, and messing around to get comfortable with the pens. For beginners i would recommend the calssic stuff you see everywhere (pictured above in the examples), start out small before you get to stuff that has more ‘fancy’ bits added to it. I would also recommend trying to write in your normal writing style and then see how you can transfer what you know into learning new calligraphy styles.
The two examples above are what i would consider easy for a beginner. The top one being cursive but written the same way calligraphy is (such as the nibs, and pen holding) and then the one below it, i would recommend if you want to learn more along the lines of foundational or carolingian as you would need to learn the nib strokes to take to make it look in a similar way. Once you have a basic understanding of the pen and the movements that create certain shapes and lines you can pretty much learn anything, the best you can do is practice what you see. (sorry for being long, i just wanted to be very informational and the pictures take up a good about of space)
