Sorry, but I feel like you ship Zukka just because Zutara is much better than canon and it threatens your ship.

Beside, even if Zutaran ship Zutara just for fun, canon shipper would still call us delulu, because it's Zuko and Katara. 'How about Aang if they're together', right?

We are ruining shipping experience for everyone? Really? There are a lot of artists mind their own business, upload Zutara fanarts for fun on their own social media, then the comment full of hate from canon shipper. Why?

Forget about headcanons. I think, every ships have headcanons, even Zukka. But what's wrong with metas and analysis?

Well, okay, Zutara shipper very much delulu! They do a lot of metas and analysis. Even worse, they use materials from the show, not just making up from their heads. Bad! Very bad!

I mean, what's wrong with Zutara shipper? Zuko and Katara have no chemistry at all in the show.

I don't need to show all the proofs, there's too many.

But still, Zutara shipper so pathetic! Because, you see, Dante Basco as Zuko VA and Mae Whitman as Katara VA ship Zutara as well.

(Reminding again about Zutara shipper ruined shipping experience for everyone, Dante Basco didn't do anything wrong with any fandom but he got a lot of hate because he vocally ship Zutara. Why?)

And Greg Baldwin as Uncle Iroh VA personally ship Zutara!!!

Jack de Sena as Sokka VA does support Zutara too in a lot of ways, you know? 😭😭

Zutara shipper are so delusional, because even John O'Brian as ATLA writer ship Zutara. He also said that the writers talked a lot about Zutara in writer room, but they were lost the fight.

Yeah, Zutara shipper shouldn't think Zuko and Katara were almost canon! That would ruin the canon shipper mood.

Unfortunately, I as Zutara shipper being delusional that even Netflix ship Zutara!! 😭😭

i have an entire sideblog dedicated to ensuring artists get proper recognition and proper credit (with permission) for their art. i’ve called out kataang ai art before. i’ll call out ai art of any sort, regardless of the ship. the fact that you care more about who is reblogging and “spreading hate” than the fact that someone from your community scammed thousands of people for months really goes to show that you don’t earnestly care about these issues. also, it extends beyond your community when they start posting characters like katara, mai, azula, yue, etc. does this look like yue to you?

truly, if more of you looked at their art, went “hmmm this looks nothing like katara” your community wouldn’t be in this issue today. but sadly, that’s not what happened. all this because you guys don’t have standards on the art you reblog and you’ll hype up anything zutara related 🤷🏽‍♀️ reflect on that.

anyway, don’t project your shortcomings onto me. I’ve outlined an extensive list on my kataang fanart sideblog on what i won’t reblog. which includes whitewashed art and ai art.

I usually don't like to call any gay content "heteronormative" because 9 times out of 10 is just dumb people on the internet misusing a term until it loses all meaning just so they berate other people for "enjoying fiction the wrong way"... but boy, do Zukka fans often fit that 1 time out of 10 in which it is used correctly.

I'm not anti-fujoshi, and a lot of times the "we must not allow straight girls to like gay stuff" is just misogyny dressed up as "fighting against objectification", but BOY, so much of the Zukka content post 2019 just screams "Okay, Zuko is the japanese guy, that means he's so feminine and submissive he just HAS to be 'the girl' of the relationship, while Sokka has dark skin, therefore he must be the aggressive, manly man that never bottoms" with manages to be homophobic, sexist and racist all in one go.

It's the same thing with some Zutara fanarts. I lost count of many times fandoms will want to lynch some poor artist because their drawing of a dark-skinned character has their skin be slightly darker/lighter and thus be called blackface/whitewashing even though the difference is barely even perceptible - meanwhile in come the worst zutarians with fanarts in which Katara looks like she was either drawn by a member of the KKK that is trying to make her look barely human since she commited the crime of existing while brown, OR they make her look so white she can be mistaken for Azula of all people.

I am not kidding. I once was going through Tumblr, saw what I assumed was a Zucest fanart because the girl had dark hair, pale skin, red lips and was wearing a red dress with all gold accessories... then I notice she has blue eyes and a blue necklace around her neck. I check the notes and yep, that was supposed to be KATARA.

HOW does one fuck up that badly?

(Also the Sozin/Roku parallels are objectively the gayest thing about Zuko and Aang's dynamic. Even gayer than the iconic "You're the thing that fuled my fire. No homo")

I’m not sure if you’ve seen anyone comment about how “similar” tdp is to ATLA or even people going far as to claim that tdp is a “ripoff” esp with the Soren, Claudia, Viren arcs in comparison to Zuko, Azula, Ozai. I personally find Soren more similar in characterization (though not entirely the same) to Steve Palchuck from the Trollhunters/Tales of Arcadia series (not sure if you watched or not) and if any character comes to mind about being similar to Zuko, it’s definitely Hunter from the Owl House in terms of characterization and arcs. Idk if you’ve done a meta about this before but I love reading your thoughts (if you’re interested ofc).

So I have done a couple of metas on ATLA x TDP, mostly noting the thematic similarities between them (bloodbending and dark magic, pre-S4's puppeteering too lol!) and between Rayllum and Kataang as developing relationships. Meta comparing "Thunderfall" and "The Southern Raiders" here, meta talking about Kataang and Rayllum (s1-s2 as it was written pre-s3) here.

Also a more opinion based piece on why I could get behind Rayllum but have never really been a romantic Zutara fan (I see them far more as narrative siblings, which is still one of my favourite metas I have ever done)

I am a big Trollhunters fan (reblog more about it on main @thethiefandtheairbender and various other cartoons like SU, HTTYD, OTGW, Infinity Train, etc) and I adore Steve, but I don't think I'd really compare Soren to him, simply because while I love Steve and his development, Soren's development is undeniably deeper and more pyschological, I think.

That said the ATLA character that reminds me the most of Soren is Sokka. Goofy, prone to joking regardless of if the situation calls for it ( "Mind if I watch you two jerks do your jerk bending?") just to get a rise out of people, lmao, sometimes overly confident or reliant on their battle prowess, and desperate to prove themselves to their fathers. Sokka's attitude particularly in early book 1 reminds me of Soren's in s1, as well as their more skeptic attitude and relationships with their more magically inclined younger sisters

For Callum, he reminds me the most of Katara and Mai (again, true before S4, but interesting to see how much he shut down the way Mai largely did due to her family relationship, so again, kinda fun that worked out). Caring sibling, fast and harsh temper, strong in magic but untrained, artistic and precise (hi Mai), ride or die for their loved ones above all else, even above morals. For Rayla, she's basically running parallel arcs to Zuko and Aang in a lot of ways: grumpy, banished, immediately protects the sibling duo she encounters, facial markings, guilt complex galore (hi Aang). Rayllum is a good blend of all their personalities tbh

For Claudia, she reminds the most of Azula, and Katara, and Zuko, due to her loyalty to her father, willingness to do anything for her family, and being marked by the same sort of dual visual storytelling that Zuko's scar had.

And Hunter from the Owl House was definitely one of my faves! I think he falls into a category a lot of more modern day redemptions do, though, in terms of not letting their character actually be messy enough for long enough that it feels like maybe redemption isn't in the cards (hi Claudia my beloved, you excellent subversion sweetie). Or they go too far and don't give enough reason for a character to effectively redeem themselves (eyes SPOP with a long sigh). And just to clarify, I do think Claudia will have a redemption arc, but I appreciate how we're going about it thus far.

It's funny bc in some ways while Zuko has never been my favourite archetype (particularly for male characters), my protagonist in my og work is a bit like him: lost, angry, easily resentful, and she's my baby.

I think I'm just kinda over arcs of "Oh my father figure is Bad / imperialism is bad"? Because 1) Zuko did it so well and 2) I wanna see stories that go beyond those things or do new things with those concepts (please no more "rich white lesbian girl with a mean family" arcs I am. so tired). I think that's why I like TDP so much, because dark magic thematically and its explorations of self destructive behaviour add a lot of layers and interesting aspects to all the dynamics that I don't see most other media for this age demographic kinda taking advantage of, tbh

So I saw that you ship Azutara and I wanted to ask you what do you think of that ship? What are your headcanons?

I ask because I never heard of it before! And I would like to hear your thoughts on how such a pairing would work :0

So for context I started shipping these two when I was like, 16, which feels like a hundred years ago lol. I don't fully remember how I got into it but I think it was from stumbling onto some fanart? This was back when deviantart was like, THE fanart website. I used to spend hours there. It wouldn't shock me if I'd found azutara by mistake when looking for zutara content, because I was into that ship back then too. But honestly I don't remember.

What I definitely do remember is finding these comics by an artist who at the time was called destikim. There was a whole series of them that followed from the premise that Azula and Katara had run into each other during season two and started a secret love affair. It had all the good forbidden love, enemies-lovers, tragic tropes that I was into at the time. So naturally I was hooked and went looking for fanfiction. And I actually did find some. Decent F/F fanfic in 2008 was hard to find too so honestly that was a small miracle.

I still really like the premise of them meeting properly during the timeline of seasons 2-3, prior to Azula's breakdown. There's something fun and tragic about that but also quite interesting. Them connecting years after the end of the series can also be really good though. The kinds of stories you can write are really limitless with a non-canon pairing because you're not as restricted by canon dynamics.

I don't think I have specific headcanons with these two so much as just...the Vibes, you know? I like the way they foil each other despite being quite similar. I think they could balance each other in some ways. The water-fire dynamic always goes hard. It's not a very conventional pairing but it has potential. I like being able to ask myself the question "what could possibly bring these two girls to love one another?" And then finding out the answer- or in most cases, someone else's answer, because I haven't actually written any fic with them lol.

Favourite time of the year: It used to be Christmas time. Call me corny but I genuinely love seeing lights everywhere and having a Christmas tree set up in the house. However…not to be overly personal and depressing, but I don’t think I quite feel the same way about Christmas (or just the holidays in general) since my brother died. I always get strongly reminded of his absence, more so than usual :( So nowadays I think it’s probably summer time. I hate cold weather and I live in an area where it gets pretty damn cold in the winter and fall.

Comfort foods: My mom’s spaghetti. It was my favorite meal growing up.

Do you collect anything: Nope. I used to collect elephants though. And I still have a bunch of porcelain elephants, partially because my grandma gave them to me before she passed.

Favourite drinks: Soda. Particularly Pepsi. It’s a horrible addiction that I really need to lay off of tbh

Favorite music artists: I hate music questions because my taste is all over the place. But lately I’ve been digging a lot of stuff from the 70’s and 80’s. Again, call me basic if you want lol

Current favourite songs: See above answer

Favourite fics: 90% of the time I read fic for shippy purposes. So almost all of my faves are romance lol. I’m just going to take a peak at my ao3 bookmarks and list 5, each one for a different ship.

1. A Saint’s Just A Sinner by killingsaray - An AU Villaneve fic with priest! Eve and temptation! Villanelle. Also just all of the Villaneve fics from this author tbh.

2. sideways by whaticameherefor: Gallavich canon divergent fic after/during S6. My favorite of its breed.

3. I’m still here by owedbetter: Zutara canon divergent after The Southern Raiders. Usually post-canon is more my speed for Zutara canon adjacent fics but this one is my biggest exception. It’s so lovely and well-written.

4. a fleeting moment by thchateaus: Daensa (Sansa/Daenerys) fic that is essentially a re-write of S8 of GoT. It pains me to rec anything GoT related but this is one of the more recent fics that I read and it’s so good. It left an impact on me.

5. Strong Enough To Bind by Magnetism_bind: The Black Sails AU where Eleanor doesn’t die and ends with Eleanor/Max/Anne ot3. Aka the Black Sails fic of my dreams lol

favourite video games: I don’t play a lot of video games tbh. I love the Life is Strange franchise even tho it’s very flawed. It was one of my first exposures to gay media when I was coming to terms with my sexuality. I also have a big soft spot for the Fable franchise because I loved it as a kid and it reminds me of my brother. It was one of the things we used to bond over.

ATTENTION anyone who likes pride and prejudice, comedy, catchy songs, and supporting local theater groups!

I have just seen my favorite adaptation on pride and prejudice ever. The local theater group did Prejudice and Pride: a Folk Musical and it was AMAZING!

The show is a genderswapped P&P that takes place in East Tennessee and blends the themes of the novel with relevance to today. If you want to get a ticket to the recording of the show, you can go here:

Some of my favorite lines include:

And everything about the songs "Heaven Sent" (aka the thirsty reverend song) and "Bandits in Love"

“All of it actually.” Walking to the doorway of the kitchen, Itachi smiles seeing you curled up on the couch with the kittens and wonders how he got so lucky to be with you. “Are you excited for our tattoo appointment? My artist is looking forward to the designs we worked out.” He decides to take a seat next to you for a minute since the noodles need a couple minutes to cook. His hands grab your feet so he can place them in his lap and massage them a bit for you.

I let out a sigh as Itachi rubs my feet. "Mmm..." I close my eyes for a minute to enjoy myself. After a long pause, I answered him. "Of course I am, baby. He did an amazing job incorporating Tui and La as well as the dragons in each of our designs." I was very excited to get a Zutara inspired tattoo with Itachi. Because while he hates it when I call him out on it, he and Zuko were very similar. Both being bad at first before defecting against their father to become a better person. "I can't wait to dress the girls up in their cat-owl costumes. They're going to be so cute!"

different anon here -> yeah the artist is a zk shipper who has an early 20s atla au where i think ka divorce & chief katara!zk happens so it was awkward in a funny way to see all the big kataang blogs reblog it 😭😭 but that being said they did tag it as kataang too so idk if it matters that much . You shouldn't have to check if the artist is a zk shipper so long as the fanart involves kataang in a non-gross way since this is just to show people really cool fanart anyway . If that makes sense

why would zutara happen if katara was chief of the SWT? her being chief would make it even less likely to happen. that headcanon was specifically created by non-zutara katara fans as a fuck you to the ambassador/fire lady katara headcanons. all they do is steal our headcanons when we curate katara spaces and make our own katara content that doesn’t involve zuko, and pretend that they created these concepts themselves so that they can call themselves “the biggest katara fans.”

i love the concept of divorced bitter exes kataang because these two would have no idea what an amicable break up is. but if it’s just so that zutara can end up happening, i’d rather just delete the art from the archive.

0. A Reminder: Who Are We?

The Zutara Gift Exchange 2023 is a fandom event that runs very similarly to a Secret Santa gift exchange. Artists and writers sign up using the AO3 sign up form, and are then given the name and gift wishlist of another participant in the event. They pick a prompt, theme or idea from their giftee’s wishlist and write/draw them a Zutara gift based on the prompt, theme or idea. While they’re hard at work, another anonymous member of the event is busy making them a gift based off the gift wishlist they submitted. At the end of December 2023, all participants of the event submit their works, and all participants receive a lovely Zutara gift as we ring in 2024. What better way to start a new year than with our OTP?

1. Do I need an Archive of Our Own account to sign up for this gift exchange?

Yes, you do. If you don’t have an account and need an invite, please go to the AO3 homepage and look at the second column. There’s a little grey box that allows you to click for an invite link. That will send your chosen email an invite to the archive, and you’ll then be able to sign up for the gift exchange.

2. What types of work are allowed in the gift exchange?

This year, we’re asking artists and fic writers to sign up. Artists can submit digital work, traditional artwork or comics, but we’re not allowing moodboards or manips for this year’s event as we’d like to start small and build from there in future years if there is a call for it. Thank you for understanding!

3. Can I create both art and a fic for my giftee?

You’re very welcome to! We do ask, however, that the main part of your gift is the type of gift that your giftee requested. So if your giftee only asked for fic, please make the artwork secondary to the fic.

4. What do I put under my wishlist for the person who is going to be making me a gift?

Please see the wishlist/offer help topic to give you some ideas of what to put.

5. What is a letter to my gifter?

Some people prefer having a letter written and posted somewhere for their gifter for every gift exchange that they enter so that they don’t have to type the same lists of wants and do not wants for every exchange. If you have one of these, or want to make one of these, you can link it in your submission form for your gifter to find.

6. What is a pinch hitter?

A pinch hitter is somebody who steps in to fill a request should the original gifter have to drop out for some reason. If you’re willing to potentially be a pinch hitter, please indicate this in the sign up form under the “offers” section. Don’t worry if you click this and then cannot be pinch-hitter when the time comes: it’s not an obligation, just a list of potential people that we can contact should there be an assignment suddenly looking for a creative’s hand.

7. What if I don’t like the assignment that I have been given?

That’s perfectly fine! Please contact Ghosty on Tumblr or via email ([email protected]) within 48 hours of receiving your assignment, and she can work with you to find the right fit!

8. What are “treats”?

Treats are extra gifts that you give to a person that you’re not assigned to. You can find all the wishlists/requests on the AO3 challenge. If there’s one there that really stirs your creativity, please feel free to make a little something to fill it! Treats are uploaded just the same way as regular gifts, but they won’t show as a fulfilled assignment. So make sure that in the box “gift this work to” you’ve placed the person’s name! Please also make one of the treat tags "treat" so that it's easily differentiated from the assigned gift for administrative purposes.

9. How do I post if I’m an artist?

You’ll still post just as though you’re posting a fic, but, instead of putting up words you’ll embed your image into the Archive of Our Own post. See here for how to embed images.

10. Can I also post it to my Tumblr/Instagram/Elsewhere?

Please do! We’d love you to. However, we ask that you only do so after January 5th, 2024. That’s the date when creators are revealed, and we’d like to keep people anonymous until then. Don’t worry, we’ll remind you when you can start proudly admitting that the masterpiece is yours!

11. May I add any ships that aren’t mentioned in the request/assignment?

If you have a way to anonymously ask your giftee if it’s okay (their Tumblr anon is on, or you ask Ghosty to ask on your behalf) and they say it’s okay, then of course! But rather err on the side of caution. Remember, this is a gift for somebody else, and we want to be extra sure that they enjoy it.

12. How do I submit my work to the event?

There are two ways of doing this.

One: Go to your AO3 dashboard. On the left there is a menu of options. Near the bottom is a tab called “Assignments”. Clicking on that will show you your open assignment, and will allow you to click to fill it.

Two: One AO3, see the top right menu option “post”. Click “post a new work” and then follow these instructions on how to post a work to the challenge. The challenge name is “zk_giftexchange_2023”.

For Zutara Week Day 7 prompt “Stories”, I wanna add that this story makes me think of Zutara (aka, Oma and Shu reincarnated 😉) .

This is from this wonderful book called “Beneath the Moon” by the talented artist Yoshi Yoshitani. It’s a compilation of folktales and fairy tales from all around the world and from multiple cultures and it’s amazing.

Zutara Fankids by Tigrette-of-Fire

…Look, I’m a little embarrassed about the fact that I ship zutara, given how polarized the atla fandom can be about shipping, but I had so much fun designing Taiyin and Arnaaluk I just couldn’t resist.

In all honesty, this was more an exercise in mixing genetics and expressions of two cultures than anything else (I mean seriously, I wasn’t exactly inspiredor anything when I named them lmao). Like I said in my Sukka fankids piece, I’m a mixed-race, multi-ethnic person – and getting to design characters that are of more than one culture and thinking about how to best visually express a connection with both sides of that character’s heritage is really fun for me. Zutara fankids are a goldmine for that kind of thing.

Unlike Taiyin and Arnaaluk, these guys can’t exist in a largely LoK-compliant verse. However, I’ve been thinking a lot about what I would’ve changed on the cultural sensitivity front in LoK, and honestly if I’m going to put the time and effort into doing that… I’m going to be self-indulgent and add my preferred ships, even though – and I cannot stress this enough – shipping has no bearing on why I dislike LoK.

So, welcome to the Hijack!Verse, I guess (which is to say the AU where I hijack the AtLA post-canon and do what I want); it’s completely self-indulgent and I’m sorry in advance. Taiyin and Arnaaluk absolutely exist in this verse too – and tbqh, most of the content I plan to make for them will be Hijack!Verse, not LoK compliant. Sorry again.

In any case, onto the Zutara kids! Let me give you a short run-down.

Kya (pictured at 16 in this drawing), Crown Princess of the Fire Nation and firebender, is the eldest. She’s outspoken, cheerful, and is a touch more mischievous than she perhaps should be (all in good fun or in the name of fucking with bigots, of course – she and her cousin Taiyin are two peas in a pod about this. I already have ideas about a Fire Boomerang Incident in mind when it comes to the two of them putting their heads together). Izumi (pictured at 15 in this drawing), is the second child. She’s likely a non-bender, and trains to mastery both with a spear in the Southern Water Tribe’s style and with a bow and arrows under the Yuyan Archers. On the more introverted end of things and fond of organization (Izumi is definitely on the autism spectrum), she likely grows up to be Kya’s Minister of Finance. Lu Ten (pictured at 13 in this drawing) is the baby of the family – on the shy end and emotionally intuitive. He’s a waterbender and chooses healing as his focus. As an adult, Lu Ten probably moves to the Southern Water Tribe pretty much full time – though, of course, he makes time to visit his sisters and vice versa.

I uh, honestly have more planned, but this is getting really long so I’ll save that for another time. I do want to say though that Kya, Izumi, and Lu Ten split their time growing up between the Fire Nation and the South Pole. It’s really important to me that they get to have equal connection to the Southern Water Tribe and its culture as they do to the Fire Nation – and frankly, there’s no way Katara wouldn’t make sure that they did. (This also means that Katara – and to a lesser degree, Zuko, given his responsibilities as Fire Lord – is splitting her time as well. There will be no cutting Katara off from her homeland OR stymying her drive to interact with the world/be a major global figure in this verse, no siree.

The teen to the bottom right, labelled “Lu Ten,” has light brown skin, dark brown hair, and gold eyes. His expression looks vaguely surprised. He is also drawn at a three-quarter view, facing to the viewer’s left. His hair is shoulder length, with the top portion tied back into a warrior’s wolf-tail. His wolf-tail is decorated with the same, flame-shaped hairpiece Izumi wears. He is wearing an cream colored necklace akin to the one Sokka wears in the series. To the immediate right of him is the Southern Water Tribe crest, drawn in pale blue.
