Tasting: Dejiang Hong Cha
Tumblr media
Right from the moment I opened the package, I was taken back by the appearance of the tea. It’s clear that this black tea has been rolled into a form similar to gunpowder green tea. The deep but glossy black color gives the tea a very attractive look when up close, but looking at it from a distance, it looked like a small pile of black ants. Now normally I can simply eye how much tea to use and I have estimate based off of leaf size. However, in this case because the leaves are tightly rolled, I wasn’t so sure. My theory upon investigating the leaf was that although small, they would be quite strong and triple in size once they unrolled after a few infusions. And so, I opted to use a much smaller amount of leaf than I normally would.
Tumblr media
The dry leaf had a very apparent baked aroma, like warm challah bread and toasted almonds. My suspicions that the little rolled leaves began to come true on the wet leaf, which was very strong and aromatic. The gaiwan was filled with a strong malty scent with notes of challah, cherry pits, ripe stone fruits and a hint on nuttiness of the finish.
The first infusion confirmed my suspicion of the tea's strength. A full mouth bitterness coated the tongue, cheeks and throat, with a sharp maltiness. However, I also found it to have a very clean and soft taste like the scent of fresh bed linens, even after noting it’s maltiness and strength. Also found it to have notes of toasted coconut and dried strawberries. Much of the bitterness faded away on further infusions, and revealing the taste of baked bread, and an odd but enjoyable floral note like flowery fabric softener.
Tumblr media
It was an interesting black tea to say the least. The little rolled leaves pack a huge punch and can infuse several times. I got to roughly around six or seven. I did find that given its power, my stomach did not like me drinking too much of it. I feel like because of this, this might be a tea that for me will work best done western style to make a single cup as opposed to several infusions which make up roughly a whole pot or kettle. Perhaps I’ll follow on this at a later date but until then I got a couple other very uncommon black teas waiting for me to taste them.
3 out of 5 stars.

Seduh 🌃
Tumblr media

Funny story. (Well, funny-ish.) . . I was about to start a blog review tasting session when my phone chimed. Apparently, @steapd_tea and @shelovestea92 were having a virtual tea party. Like a hippo in a teaware shop, I decided to crash said tea party, and stayed there for three hours. . . In the interim, once I was done with "the blog teas", I cracked open the above box. @camellia.sinensis Jungpana EX-6, first flush 2019. Read: "the fancy Jungpana" (as @teajay9 calls it). Still as smooth and fruity as ever. . . I'm still in my pajamas, and I'm tea drunk. . . Do you know? Most of the teas that we drink everyday, such as Black, Green, Oolong, White and Yellow Teas, are grown from the same "mother" - Camellia Sinesis (in Chinese: 茶花, cha hua, english: Tea Plant), but are processed differently to attain vary levels of oxidation. Although Camellia Sinensis is the mother of teas, there are several varieties. The best known and often be found in tea cultivation are Camellia Sinensis var. SINENSIS and Camellia Sinensis var. ASSAMICA. The SINENSIS originated from China and ASSAMICA is from India, named after the province of Assam in India. Camellia Sinesis contains caffeine, hence a real tea are usually contains caffeine, but it's much lower than coffee. If you are sensitive to high caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, a cup of tea is a good alternative for you. If you can't take caffeine at all, then Herbal Tea is a great choice ,as it's caffeine-free, and some may even help to sleep well. #camelliasinensis #blacktea #greentea #oolong #oolongtea #whitetea #yellowtea #teastagram #sinensis #assamica #assam #tea #cohowes #lifestyletea #cohoweslifestyletea https://www.instagram.com/p/B6IkNOAAcZ3/?igshid=18xpl9babjy5b

Scabiosa japonica Mia.
