I've been thinking about this angsty AU for a while know...

But...what if each of the gifted Madrigals snapped before Antonio's ceremony?

Bruno was the first; He cracked under the pressure before Mirabel's ceremony. Honestly, being seen as a bad omen/curse, constantly giving out "bad" or unreadable visions that he knows will be seen as bad, practically being forced to give visions knowing they'll get a bad reaction, and constant migraines/headaches can't be good for someone's mental health.

The order of the other's snapping (I'm going in the order of age)

Pepa (after Antonio's birth) - So stressed out and emotionally unstable that she snapped and caused a rainstorm for a whole week until her body gave out.

Julieta (A year or two after Pepa)- Not sure what to do for her.

Isabela (When Antonio was two/three)- How would being the golden child and put under the perfection pedestal not take a toll on you mentally?

Dolores (a six months after Isa) - It could surround something about hearing way too many sounds/voices at once.

Luisa (four months after Lolo) - Surface pressure got too much to handle.

Camilo (two months after Lu) - Identity crisis, constantly told that YOU aren't needed but the other person is. In other words, feeling like you yourself aren't special at all. Need I say more?

By the time Antonio was four the only Madrigals what were left were Alma, Felix, Agustin, and Mirabel. How do you think you would interpret this au?

Do you think there are any mental hospitals in Encanto? I mean, there is always going to be people with mental issues so there has to be one. But I don't think a normal mental hospital could house such gifted people that could possibly turn into a threat at any given moment.

Idk, this is just an idea and maybe you could be a little more elaborate with it. But honestly, how do you think the gift less Madrigals would react to this happening? (and maybe the villagers?)

(Also, I don't think Antonio would be getting a gift in this au. The candle/Casita is way too scared of the pressure he may be put under and what it might cause. But it's up to you though)

Okay, I have ideas for this!

I’ll call it Separated.

My only note is why would the family separate and just abandon each other? Specifically, the wives leaving their spouses and the literal five-year-old. It makes more sense that they stay together.

Order and why the family finally snapped:

Bruno (1938) - basically the same as said here, but no relation to Mirabel. His reputation started falling after Pepa’s wedding, but by this point, there was nothing to be saved and he had no will to try save it. (The headaches thing isn’t necessary; Julieta can heal him).

Isabela (1944) - in response to being told she was going to start courting and ultimately marry Mariano, but the whole ‘perfect, golden child’ definitely added to the emotions. She didn’t leave the family straightaway, due to her age, but stopped following Abuela’s orders. She also began asking her parents if they could leave.

Pepa (1945) - following Antonio’s birth and her mother’s concerns over whether or not he would be gifted. Alongside her own suppressing of emotions and the equally poor treatment of Dolores. She finally had enough. Félix never officially snapped, just agreed with his wife without hesitation.

Dolores (1945, a few weeks after Pepa) - inspired by her mother, Dolores had also reached her boiling point shortly after and felt confident to express it. Not that it was necessary for her to do as she was obviously going to be leaving with her parents and brothers. But she felt that she should get the chance to for her voice to be heard.

Agustín (1946) - he had recently become aware of the townspeople’s treatment of Luisa and refused to stay a moment longer. If the warm family got out, so can they. To the point he threatened divorce against Julieta, was just going to take Luisa and leave. Julieta never officially snapped, just agreed with her husband; though it was after a few discussions.

Luisa (1949) - though her father’s snap happened earlier and in relation to her, she didn’t feel quite the same; that might be age and insecurity talking. Her treatment did briefly get better because of her father but settled back to old way soon enough and then got even worse. She was done being a mule for the townspeople, for some of the stupidest reasons.

Camilo (1950) - being a teenager is hard enough, a time for finding yourself and your identity. Chucking shapeshifting and those implications on top isn’t easy. He is the most recent member of the Madrigals to snap, though is the only one to suggest a desire to be a normal family. He is still a child - he just wants to play and hang out with the other kids.

Is there a mental health hospital in Encanto? No. It’s a rural town in the middle of nowhere. And it’s 1950. (Not that it matters because Encanto is frozen in the late 1800s). If they were to have anything, it would be a small asylum - which nobody would want anything to do with for very understandable reasons.

Alma, still very warped in her grief, probably doesn’t take this very well at all. With every separation, she just gets worse. The family is breaking all over again - she is losing them, not so different from how she lost Pedro. Maybe even worse because they are still alive, they just want nothing to do with her.

The husbands are in obvious support/defence of their wives and children. They are outsiders to this family, they are a little bit better at picking up on the pressure they are being put under and how it’s not normal. They only want the best for their families and won’t just accept being put through such extremes.

Mirabel is a little ignorant to this all. Being the actual giftless one, she was never hugely included in any of the discussions or such. She doesn’t question too much, she wouldn’t want to overstep. She had accepted her place on the sidelines a little more - even if her family is no longer front and centre (in the way they were before), she just sticks to the background and tends not to get involved with any family drama.

Antonio, who isn’t getting a gift - he doesn’t even live in Casita, so he wouldn’t even know about his door - doesn’t have much thoughts about this. His family’s separation happened so early in his life that he doesn’t known anything beyond this. This is just normal. He’s too young to understand or really be too curious either.

This boy also suffered but it seems like not a lot of people notice it

He was literally scared of not getting a gift! He believed that the gift is what made him important and special (i mean, he saw the way Mirabel got treated by Abuela), it was supposed to be the night of his life, the happiest day ever for him, but was he happy? NO HE FREAKIN' WASN'T! Heck he hesitated before touching the doorknob

And let's not forget that he literally didn't get to meet or even know his tio, a tio who he CLEARY would've loved, a tio who would've loved him like his own kid

This boy literally had his gift for a DAY! Then BAM! He lost his gift after he had had it for ONE DAY, did i forget to mention that HE WAS GONNA BE CRUSHED BY A FREAKING DOOR?! Can you imagine how traumatizing it can be for a FIVE YEAR OLD KID

Not to mention he literally saw Casita collapse on Mirabel, his prima, his HERMANA FIGURE (no offense, Dolores)

Coming out as genderfluid to Camilo headcanons

⚠️ There are mentions of transphobia (NOT FROM CAMILO OFC) at the end as well as gender dysphoria. I'll mark the points related to the transphobia with *** and the ones related to dysphoria with !!! so you know to avoid it if you don't want to read that. It's at the very end and separated from the rest with [] so you can just stop before that, there's nothing after it. ⚠️

Camilo loves you very much, so he's, naturally, very supportive and understanding. But also completely chill about it.

(This is more of a personal Camilo hc but I see him as either bi or pan so he doesn't care about your gender).

If you end up crying while doing it he'll comfort you in any way you prefer.

If you like hugs, he'll hug you close and nice, give you a little kiss on the forehead.

"Amor, it's okay! I love you, alright? Thanks for telling me." He says that with that sweet Camilo smile, I'm picturing it and I hope you are too.

I think with him being a shape shifter he's had at least one gender identity crisis, so he probably knows what genderfluid is from the research he did back then.

So you don't need to explain anything! But if you still want to just to be sure he'll listen, of course.

From then on the second thing he does when he sees you for the first time in the day is ask what your pronouns are.

(The first thing that he does is give you a hug and kiss on the cheek, of course).

Or you can have an agreement that you'll just tell him what you wish to be referred as whenever you feel like it and he doesn't need to ask.

Or both. Whatever you prefer.

If you ever want to dress more masculine he'll definitely let you borrow his clothes.

Honestly I think he'd love it if you wear his clothes and will compliment you on your fashion sense.

If you want to go shopping for clothes to make you feel more comfortable at all times then he'll gladly accompany you and help you choose.

If anyone misgenders you on accident he'll correct them. In a very casual way, but will.

Unless you prefer to do it yourself (or prefer not to do it at all, because I know some people are uncomfortable doing that, and he'll respect that even if he feels bad whenever it happens).

Basically, Camilo is chill about it and will do whatever makes you feel most comfortable.

My Encanto (unpopular? Idk) Opinions no one asked for

I don’t think Mariano is as “dumb” as people think he is. Like yeah I even joke around and say he’s “dumb in love” but I don’t actually think he’s absent’minded. 

I’m indifferent about Camilo, I don’t hate or even dislike him, I’m just not drawn to his character. This could be why I’m not a big fan on how a lot of the fandom portray him as this “depressed identity crisis of a teenager” like I get it, as someone who struggles with my own identity and place in the world, I understand! I just don’t see Camilo this way. I feel like he KNOWS who he is, he just wishes everyone saw him as Camilo instead of “the boy who shape-shifts”. I also feel like most of his agnst comes from him trying to make everyone happy and forgetting about himself. Most of the self-image headcanons I have are for Isabela (for better or for worse). If you disagree, that’s fine!!!!

As much as I love Bruno, I’m also not a huge fan of how some of the fandom portrays him as this “little anxious man who can do no wrong uwu”. I don’t think people realize that Bruno leaving caused a lot of pain to the family just like they caused him pain. Everyone was in the wrong in some way (except the grandkids of course). It just disregards the complexities of his humanity and infantilizes him in my opinion. On a lesser extent, a lot of people seem to forget that this man is SASSY. Him being sassy and even angry doesn’t make him a villian, it’s understandable! After everything this man has been through, I don’t see him putting up with anyone’s bullshit. 

Side note: making Bruno nuerodivergent and or mentally ill is not infantilizing him, that’s not what I’m referring to.

Speaking of, I don’t think Bruno or Camilo are overrated but I do think love for them overshadows the other characters A LOT. (Yes I’m guilty of this)

He mopes

It’s so goddam pitiful you can’t help but want to hold him

I mean you were gonna do it anyways but his sad puppy eyes and droopy head just make it more compelling

He’ll keep up an act for the crowds and the kids, smiling and playing

But as soon as he waves goodbye the grin fades and his shoulders slump and he crosses his arms across his chest

Yes Ik it’s very angsty teen

But it’s also very Camilo

He’s not gonna try to hide his feelings if he doesn’t feel like he needs to bc it seems stupid

Why would someone bottle up their feelings?

Why hide them?

That just creates more problems

And not the fun kind

So when you approach him and ask if everything’s alright he doesn’t try for a smile and nod his head

Camilo looks right at you and shakes his head with the saddest look it makes your heart ache

So you offer him your hand and lead him somewhere secluded

You sit down on a bench or the ground and either A) gently pull him onto your lap or B) let him sit next to you

It depends on the temperature and your moods

It doesn’t matter which position tho he’s still gonna curl up there and flop his head onto your shoulder which prolly hurts you both a lil but you don’t really mind as he nuzzles into you and breathes deep

You wrap your arm(s) around him, rest your chin on the top of his head, and trace the tips of your fingers up and down his arm(s)

Or you might do that to his back

Or you might rub his back

Or a combination of the above

But anyways

As Camilo heaves a sigh you quietly ask if he wants to talk about it

Welp I was gonna say that toward the beginning of your relationship he wouldn’t but I honestly don’t think it would matter

If he doesn’t need to get it out or if he doesn’t have the energy to talk about it then he shakes his head

So you’ll just chill there with him, comforting him wordlessly, pressing tender, loving kisses anywhere and everywhere

Neck, forehead, temple, hair, hands, arms, shoulders, everywhere

If he’s on your lap with his chest to yours you’ll slowly comb your hands thru his hair and twirl the ends around your fingers

I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times in all the other hcs and imagines and fanfics but a main cause of Camilo’s upset-ness is that ppl in town are always asking for him to be other ppl

No one asks for just Camilo

So he’s often left feeling unwanted and used

So you’re there to remind him that you and the other Madrigals love Camilo for Camilo

He’s more than his gift

Then another huge source of mopey behavior is an identity crisis

With his gift it’s easy for all the appearances and genders and changing to go to his head

Camilo is also, without a doubt, a he/they

I don’t know a single he/they or she/they (including myself) that has not had multiple gender identity crisis’

And even after they come out and have it “figured out” there are still lots of times when they question it

So when Camilo has his he’s very confused and feeling vulnerable and probably second guessing everything every time someone calls him “he” or “they”

There’s honestly not much you can do for this

No solid advice you can give

No definite or clear solution

But you can offer support

You can promise that you’ll be there no matter what

It doesn’t matter if Camilo is a guy, gal or nonbinary pal

You’ll always love him/them for him/them

And Camilo is infinitely grateful for it

You have no idea

Camilo’s heart swells- no- bursts with love and gratitude and adoration

He holds you a little closer

Squeezes you a little tighter

Falls whole stories deeper in love with you (if that was even possible)

On the subject of Camilo, I definitely can’t wait to see or hear what his dynamic is like with Mirabel, because they honestly have a lot in common, more than people think.

For starters, the two are the same age, both 15 years old, with Camilo being slightly older. It was confirmed that the two grew up in the nursery together from birth to five years old, (until Camilo got his gift and moved out), but still, there’s got to be SOME chemistry there. A lot of people think they don’t necessarily have a relationship, or that they’re not close due to the shock of Camilo getting gifted right before Mirabel didn’t, so I really hope that’s not that case, that would be sad, even if it’s an interesting dynamic. I want to see them both happy because the main and most IMPORTANT thing they have in common is their hardships. Since they’re both 15, they’re both at that age where they’re finding themselves. They don’t necessarily know who they are or what they want to be, and that corresponds to their characters. Mirabel is the girl who didn’t get a gift in a family where that’s what they’re known for, so she doesn’t know who she is without one or what she can be. In the movie, you see how she’s made patterns and dresses in the nursery, and even though she’s created an aesthetic for herself, the directors and writers have confirmed that she’s the embodiment of “that person in the family who’s trying to find their place.” Then you have Camilo, you while he DID get a gift, he also isn’t sure of who he wants to be. Even though none of this was explored in the movie, director Jared Bush describes Camilo as someone who is “trying on different personas”, because again, he doesn’t know who he wants to be yet or who he is, leaning into a potential arc of identity crisis, something every kid goes through at one point, and it doesn’t help that he has the power to change into other people, probably making him wonder who he really is inside. The fact that Camilo and Mirabel’s problems seem to be similar despite them having their own unique differences is something I love, it only makes me want to see them interact more. Kinda goes to prove that in a big family, you’re not alone, someone else could be going through the same thing you are, even if it’s a different scenario. I’m hoping for the dynamic the fandom thinks of honestly, where they’re both just troublemakers because I totally can see that, though I of course also see Camilo being a little more mischievous compared to Mirabel lol.

Of course, I also love how they’re both sweet and just love their family members very much, they’re also one of the most expressive and alive characters I’d say, if they both were to walk into a room, it would definitely be filled with chaotic positive energy. Director Jared of course had confirmed that he’s not ready to reveal the dynamic yet, so I really hope we see or hear it sometime soon because I love them! 🤍💙💛🧡

Just finished the Baymax series AAAAAA my little crossover brain has ideas!!

Imagine Riley has a fall during a practice (like with the aunt Cass situation) and when the hockey team’s reserves are all absent, Baymax has to put on the largest pair of ice skates you’ve ever seen to try and take her place. Riley of course watches from the stands, finding the whole thing hilarious. Baymax’s team would obviously win but it would be by complete accident due to some wacky shenanigans. There could also be a message about kids who used to love the sport they’re trained in from a young age but feel burnt out due to growing up, school, home life or other stressful things and seeing Baymax trying his best reignites their passion to play.

Imagine Giulia crashes her bike on the way to school and Baymax has to not only help fix up her scratches and bruises but also fix her bike since she doesn’t have money for a tram ticket. Giulia is pretty adept at it but one of the parts is busted and she desperately needs a new one so Baymax ends up running around the city with her looking for it at various hardware stores. By the time the bike is fixed, it’s only a few minutes before homeroom. Luckily, Giulia is a fast rider.

Imagine Miriam (Turning Red) trips at the skate park and while she’s down a group of older kids steal her skateboard. Baymax realises how much skating means to Miriam and the two team up to get her board back. Of course, that means they end up in the middle of an impromptu skate-off where Baymax has to race against one of the older kids. Miriam gives him basic lessons (as well as him downloading how-to tutorials into his database) but he can’t quite get the hang of it until the last second. They do eventually get the skateboard back though and Miriam is excited to tell Mei, Priya and Abby about what happened.

Imagine Violet (Incredibles) struggling with social anxiety and one day Baymax notices and starts helping her. She slowly improves until she’s able to talk to other people in her class. Of course, it takes a lot of back and forth, Violet being argumentative and insisting Baymax’s help isn’t working but Baymax always pushes through and eventually she starts opening herself up more. She ends up making friends with Tony, Wilbur (Meet the Robinsons) and Camilo + Mirabel (Encanto) and the five eventually form a cohesive friend group. They even talk about starting a band together. Violet is really glad that Baymax was able to give her the first leg-up to get to where she is now, though Baymax insists Violet was the one who did the real work.

(Now to get into the AU side of things — this might actually play into the plot at some point)

IMAGINE Miguel’s powers starting to become less controlled. He doesn’t have to sing the ‘special song’ for them to activate and he finds himself partially turning into a skeleton at random times. At school, on the street, around his family etc… On one of these occasions, Baymax overhears him freaking out and finds him. Upon doing a scan, Baymax finds that what Miguel is going through isn’t in his database (besides the stress, of course) and this causes Baymax to have a mild existential crisis, especially when he can’t find supplementary information through downloading external sources. Miguel obviously plays it off and gets away from the situation as quickly as he can. Baymax starts acting out of sorts because he wasn’t able to come up with a way to help a patient and obviously Hiro ends up noticing eventually. Baymax relates his problem in a confidential manner (not revealing Miguel’s identity and such) which gets Hiro curious about the incident.

(AU notes: this would take place after Hiro and Miguel had had a huge falling out and hadn’t spoken to one another for months. The two won’t properly make up and become friends again until the Big Hero 6 and Magic Users accidentally bump into one another while on a rescue mission to save the child actress Penny (Bolt), who was kidnapped by Yama to use for ransom. It’s during this incident that Hiro finds out about the existence of Magic Users in the city.)

You know what? My last post was wrong. You remember the old days when Disney movies would get full TV series? That's what Encanto needs, more than a sequel.

Because every single character is rich enough to craft their own story around, and I'm dying to see some of those ideas explored.

Not just Bruno reintegrating into his family, of course... But also...

Luisa learning to be kind to herself. Not knowing how to take it easy even if she's now "allowed" to.

Mirabel and Isabela properly teaming up and tackling some issue, not just the teaser the movie gives us.

Camilo was great. Any episode revolving around him would just be a good time. (Normally, I'd say there'd be some sort of identity crisis plotline when looking into a shapeshifting character... But he's got so much personality, for how little screen time he got.)

Dolores is super interesting. The movie chose to focus on her unrequited love... But I feel like her ability is one that might be kind of a pain. Maybe literally painful at times. I can't help thinking that maybe that short period where they lost their abilities... could have been kind of a relief? I'd like to see that explored. Her mom also has a difficult power; they could have a bonding episode.

And Mirabel's dad! That man deserves everything. I loved his loyalty. How he's always trying to go along with what the family decrees, but there was that moment he did stand up to Alma to protect his daughter. Not having a special power himself, I feel like they missed out on a wonderful bonding moment too.

I'll stop, but I'm sure I could think of more. Disney+ led me to believe this movie had a 2-hour runtime... I felt so betrayed to reach the end and see more than 20 MINUTES of credits. There's so much more that could have been explored!

I feel like Carlos might have some trauma, like how Isabela was pressured to be perfect and how Pepa kept hiding her emotions. So what is Carlos's trauma?

Well, I was supposed to save this for future content, but given the circumstances of me being constantly busy, I might as well tell you.

Carlos had always been quite a wild kid. So when he got his powers, it seemed kind of new to him that he could turn into whatever animal he acted out. On several occasions, when he just got his powers, he couldn't control them, and it took Antonio, Camilo, Luisa, Mirabel, and Alora to take him down. Some often see him as a beast. That's why he likes sticking by his mom and tío Antonio because they understand animals better. Carlos' mother used to be a huntress when she lived in the woods. She knows how to tame wild animals. And as he gets older, he gets advice from his dad about his identity crisis.

I imagine as five year olds they didn't like going home after playing all day. Camilo shapeshifts to trick their parents. “You’ll never guess, Mami” he says directly at Pepa. And when she immediately scoops him up “MAMI HOW DID YOU GUESS?!”

I like to think of them as the devil and the angel on Camilos shoulders. 

Zacarias will walk into Casita and yell “Hey Puto! Camilo get your ass outta bed!” whilst Teodoro apologises for his brother.

Other thoughts:

 - Julieta requests a days notice if these two are joining the family for dinner cause you know, they’re three growing teenage boys that eat a lot.

 - Teodoro likes more quiet activities and eventually gets a job in the Encantos archives. Agustin puts him up with a briefcase, cologne and shows him how to tie a tie.

 - As they get older they get tired and irritated when they get mistaken for eachother. Camilo sympathises, it’s not the same as the identity crisis you have as a shapeshifter but it’s probably the closest he can find in the Encanto.

What would each Encanto character do if they visit the therapist

POV: The Madrigal Family has to visit the therapist every year to just keep track on how they are doing with their lives whether they like it or not.

So.... Let's get started

Abuela Alma: "You know, I don't need therapy, I am completely happy and satisfied with my life"

Therapist: "Señora, I dont mean to bother but does mourning for your dead husband for 50 years part of that happy and satisfied life?"

*Abuela starts sobbing and tells the whole story and says she hates her life*

Therapist: "This is why you go to the therapist every year"

Abuela Alma: "Yeah, I guess you are right, I also need some advice to be a good mother and grandmother as well"

Julieta: "To be honest, I am really fine though, that was a quick session so I guess I'll see you next year!"

Therapist: "Yes thank you for taking advantage of this session and used up 3 hours while you are still the 2nd Madrigal I had today!"

Pepa: "Yeah, you already know the usual"

Therapist: "Okay so I guess it will be a quick session here since you are a regular"

Bruno: "I hope you would love to listen what I am about to say, because probably you would cry too"

Therapist: "This is my job, go on"

*Bruno tells his sad life story while crying*

Therapist, crying: "Oh my gosh, you don't deserve all this pain"

Felix: "My life is good, I married the love of my life, we had 3 kids, why would I need therapy? Well, I gotta go now!"

Therapist: "All members have a minimum of 30 minutes with me. If you were a regular 10 minutes are enough"

Felix: "I AM FINE! I DON'T NEED THIS!"

Therapist: "Rules are rules Señor"

Felix: "AAAAAAAHHHH"

Agustín: "To be honest, my life is just a complete combination of I love my life and I hate my life. I guess that is what I am going to say"

Therapist: "So is there something I can do for you Señor?"

Agustín: "I want my wife, my 3 daughters, and to get out of here"

Therapist: "Well you still have 15 minutes, so we need to discuss more things"

Agustín: "Well I already told you what I want to discuss"

Isabela: I may seem perfect on the outside but I am literally a complete mess on the inside. I really hate my life sometimes. Do you have like a few hours to listen to me?

Therapist: "This is my job. Go on."

*5 hours later*

Isabela: "Thank you so much for listening how badly my life has gone"

Therapist: "No problem, just doing my job!"

Dolores: "No therapy for me, I listened your conversations with the others, I think I don't need you anymore"

Therapist:*sobs as she felt useless*

Luisa: "So, I am a regular right?"

Therapist: "Yeah.... So a short 10 minute session would be good"

Luisa: "GREAT!"

Camilo: "Do you have any advice on how to avoid identity crisis?"

Therapist: "Just be yourself"

Camilo: "What if you don't know how to be yourself"

Therapist: "Find what you love to do"

Camilo: "I love to eat Tia Julieta's food!"

Therapist: "🤦‍♀"

Mirabel: "Sooo..... what's up?"

Therapist: "You are in therapy, just be comfortable here"

Mirabel: "Oh so I can sleep here? Oh good, because I am tired"

Therapist: "Teenagers these days...."

Antonio: "How to make friends with humans? I only have animal friends👉👈"

Therapist: "Just be yourself"

Antonio: "So I can ride around with Parce?"

Therapist: "Uuuuhhhhh, yes"

Antonio: "Yayyyy!!!

rewatched Encanto, realized I don't have the words to write this amazing story thats basically just an identity crisis, a Camilo-centric story of sorts, diving deeper into how his family never needs him, just who he can be, and I don't have the words to do so

when camilo gets too overwhelmed, he resorts to breaking the mirrors that surround him against rooms walls. unfortunately, he doesnt get much of a break from his own reflection even then, because they almost immediately fix themselves to avoid bad injuries.

he'll try to place them face down, but they always go back upright. it's almost as if they're mocking him—trying to cause the panic bubbling up inside him to burst.

when the panic finally overflows, he goes to punching the mirrors out of anger. this is when dolores can hear the shift of energy in his room, and she knows he's going to end up accidentally hurting himself. she'll go get some of juiletas leftovers and bring them to him, and when she finds him, he'll be curled on the floor, clutching his hair hard between his fingers.

she'll do her best to comfort him, to calm him down enough to eat whatever she brought with her if he needs it, but somedays it takes a long time. if she'd found him sometime in the night, she'll be able to hear the town gradually starting to wake up before she feels safe about letting him be alone again.

she hates that the gift her brother had been so excited about getting when he was young has caused him so much pain, and she'd do anything to make him feel happy again, even if she doesnt get any sleep to do so.

*caugh caugh* I’d like to spend a few minutes to talk about THIS little dude

And particularly his relationship with Mirabel because… well, the movie is about her

Yeah! That’s my “who the hell asked you” post analysing characters and their behaviour!

First of all, why am I doing this?

I recently saw someone saying they wish Camilo and Mirabel were bff but low-key believe they kinda couldn’t stand each other, and, unfortunately, I think they’re right.

We have to take a LITTLE step back in time.

We know Camilo is just a few months older then Mirabel.

Camilo has an outgoing personality, is VERY dramatic, very intuitive and he is a MIME

he see things and repeat them. This is a very important part of my statement.

Now let’s think about tiny tiny Camilo having his gift ceremony and he is at the center of attention and everyone’s happy.

Now let’s think about Mirabel’s ceremony and how everything changed.

I’m not giving excuses to Camilo for being a jerk to her, no way on that, but still, HE WAS FIVE YEARS OLD.

Have you ever met a five years old? That age is vulnerable about changes.

From one day to the other the whole house assets changed.

They started cracking down.

What looked like something stable just a moment before was not anymore.

The adults of the house probably started panicking. Abuela got more and more stringed and reserved every day a little more, his aunt was probably super busy preventing Mirabel from breaking down, his uncle disappeared. And his mom. We know for a fact Camilo is very fond of his mom. And she is an anxious mess. She must have made a rainstorm on all Encanto for at least a week no matter how much help Felix could give. How do you think a five years old could react to that?

He blamed Mirabel for that. And of course that is not right, but it’s just a fact. Adults have rationality and could see the whole picture, as limited as it was (and even there we can see some of them still having resentment towards her *abuela caugh caugh*) but even if they told him it was not Mirabel’s fault nothing changes how, deep down, he regretted her for causing that mess. And I think this is the real difference between him and Antonio. Antonio didn’t know what it was like before, Camilo did.

He had to keep the mood light, take the lead and in his tiny brain probably thought he could prevent his mom (and family) from breaking down.

Years pass. They grow up. They are 15 years old.

He is a 15 years old.

He is a cute face, annoying, very real characterised 15 years old.

He practically ignores Mirabel most of the movie. The only person that we see him having a “closer” relationship with (apart from his closer family) is Isabela, even if it’s mostly an “I’ll annoy you” kind of relationship, and SURPRISE SURPRISE Isabela has the same sconstant behaviour towards Mirabel.

I’m not saying he doesn’t have affection towards his cousin. They’ve been living together all of their lives and that family, as problematic as it is, has a strong bond, but what I’m saying is that he, as a primadonna 15 years old, probably lacks on empathy and just sees the surrounding and their repercussions and can not really focus on the impact it all has on Mirabel, because, let’s be serious here, I doubt he cared. He had other thoughts on his mind. I repeat. A 15 years old.

Even when casita breaks down he was more concerned about the house itself then letting Mirabel and her mom having a moment. Okay, it might have been for the “let’s light up the mood a little” or because he follows the “light hearted character” trope, I’ll give you that, but still, that’s what we got and what we see and what we shall consider.

All be said and done, I love his character and I think it’s ugly to confine him in a “OH MY GOD HE IS SO CUTE BABY, THEY ARE BESTIES” trope because… it is not true???

Of course you can ignore all of this if it makes you happy, who am I to judge, but two things can coexist.

Humans are complex and so are their relationship with each other.

They made these characters so beautifully flawed and human that seeing them confined into a 2D box is just limitative.

A little final, personal thought.

I think the only “real” interaction he and Mirabel have is at the end of the movie, when they are rebuilding Casita. Here we have cousins complicity! Look at Camilo’s little smirk! I think that is so cute. I hope that from there they’re going to build a closer bond.
