I love 9-1-1! So could you write an incest smut where Reader Diaz is Eddie's little sister, who lived with her brother to take care of Christopher. While Christopher and Eddie, reader is a secret cam girl. Eddie didn't know until he took a day off and found out about his sister's secret
(repost bc of the community tag)
This one got me h-word on isle 14
part ii
Tumblr media
tw: incest, voyeurism
•Eddie loved his home unit. It consisted of the two people he loved the most and it was actually working and functional
•Christopher loved having his aunt around because you took some of the tension away from him and his dad when it got too bad
•Speaking of which, Chris is grounded for three weeks from his game console and you’ve been racking your brain all day trying to keep him entertained
•It was just you two for the most part because Eddie had some insane hours at the firehouse, but he never missed the important stuff and that’s what mattered most
•It was 1am when you got a message from one of your regular viewers. He was offering $300 for pics of you cosplaying as a gamer girl, so you did
•You did your hair and makeup before changing into your metallic bathing suit and grabbing your headset
•Eddie had gotten you your own so you could properly play with Chris. You did however need his chair and set up
•Since it was displayed in the living room, you had to be careful of the time so your brother wouldn’t walk in and listen for the sleeping child in the next room
•You sauntered out there and turned on his console. You realized you can get to the internet on here and if you clear the history and delete the pictures, no one would be the wiser
•You set up your phone and started taking sexy pictures and videos of you fingering yourself in the chair
•Once satisfied, you uploaded them to the console and logged into your cam account. You went live for about an hour and a half before calling it a night
•You said your goodbyes and logged off. But before you could even properly stand, you heard the keys in the lock
•You jumped up, turned off the console and the light and made the fastest beeline to your room possible
•Right when you closed your door is when you heard the front one open and you couldn’t help but let out a sigh of relief
•You took off the look for that night and went to sleep
•The next day you hear Eddie yelling and you jump out of bed to see what’s going on
• “Hey, hey, hey! What’s going on?”
•Eddie stood there with arms crossed, “You wanna tell her or should I?”
•Christopher just sighed and rolled his eyes, “I was trying to show dad a cool video and it said I was logged on last night, but I wasn’t! Dad I swear.”
• “I don’t want to hear it. Go get ready to go to Tony’s. Which you’re lucky enough to still get to do.”
•He got off the couch and went to put his shoes on and went to meet his friend downstairs
• “Can you believe that kid? All the lying and secrets,” he said turning off the console.
• “He’s 13, Edmundo. He’ll grow out of it.”
•You felt bad for letting your little nephew take the rap, but it was better him than you. Plus he didn’t get in anymore trouble, so what’s the real harm?
•Your phone buzzed and it was another subscriber asking for fresh shower pics. You didn’t have any in your folder, so you’ll actually have to take a shower
•You got off the couch and made your way to the bathroom, leaving Eddie to his own devices
•Eddie sighed and looked around at what to do when his eyes landed back on the console. He was curious to see what Christopher was viewing so late in the night
•He turned it back on and logged in. He went to the history and his face immediately got red with anger
•Not only was his son lying to him, but now he was watching porn? LIVE porn at that
•He clicked the link and it took him to a different screen…a screen that showed your profile
•He sat up in his seat, not sure what exactly he was looking at. He clicked the latest thumbnail and saw his little sister, spread eagle in their living room, getting herself off for strangers
•He watches a couple minutes of it before you moaned and he felt his cock twitch. He was taken off guard by his body’s response to his little sister, but goddamn it he was only human
•He began palming his hardening cock through his sweatpants when he heard the shower turn off
•Eddie quickly signed off and acted like nothing happened. He got off the couch and began roaming around aimlessly until he saw your bedroom door cracked
•He snuck over and placed his eye right in the crack, watching you lotion your still soaking body and change
•He never knew you looked so beautiful doing the simplest things like clasping your bra. He suddenly grew envious of the men that get to watch you and have you all to themselves
•He knew it could never be him, but that was honestly part of the fun
I’m definitely going to do a part two to this!

Tumblr media
Taking a seat in front of the camera, you settle yourself in the comfy chair. Like most days, you spent time with your husband, either on set or at interviews behind the cameras.
But today was different; Buzzfeed had asked you to do the infamous 'Buzzfeed's thirsty tweet’ segment with a twist. You'd be reading your husband's tweets from a small bucket. Chuckling to yourself, you crossed a leg over and sat up in the chair, waiting for the film team to start recording. They had given you a mini script to base your introduction off, and then it was for you to present the rest.
Alright, three, two, one. The film crew signalling to start.
A light smile paved your face as you looked straight into the camera. "Hello there, my name is Y/n Evans, and today, I am going to be reading my husband's thirst tweets?" Your head tilted a bit at the slight weird sentence.
You laughed a little, looking at your mortified husband. Chris was sitting behind the cameras watching from afar. You looked down to the bucket that one of the producers had given you off-screen a few minutes prior.
"By the way, Chris is off-camera. So he'll be listening in." You smiled sneakily into the camera, "But… the spotlight is on me today, so we might as well embarrass him with your tweets." You chuckled, pulling out the first tweet.
"Chris Evans could snap me in half like this log, and my ghost would thank him." you looked back to the camera, smiling, "oh, he definitely could." You chuckled.
To the side, you could see Chris run a hand down his chin, trying so hard not to laugh. He knew that you'd be extra sarcastic with this interview. Pulling out another one from the bucket, you opened the paper up, "Oooooh!" your eyebrows raised slightly, and your eyes widened.
"I want Chris Evans to be my Massimo. Ready to be fifty shades and choked, sweetie." You quickly slap a hand over your mouth, laughing into it. You could hear a few of the crew laughing, and Chris was silently dying on the ground. "hahaha", you emphasised the laugh, looking back to the camera. "Chris loves this tweet." You winked, "I can also confirm he'd be a sexy Christian Grey."
You threw the paper behind you sarcastically, "moving on…" you cheered, pulling another tweet out from the bucket. You start chuckling reading the following tweet; you can't help but laugh. "Chris Evans can run me over with a lawnmower while I call him daddy." A slight smirk appears on your face, "Chris is doing the lawns next weekend, actually, so..." You wink twice, "come over if you know what I mean." You wiggle your eyebrows at the camera. "Aren't you, babe?" You look over at him, smiling. His face said it all.
"Alright, we got time for a few more!" You smiled, "This is fun!" You wiggled your body in a dancing mood, "oooo, which one is next, which one is next." You spoke before pulling out another tweet. Your mouth slightly opened, seeing the image of your husband, "This one says, I Don't wanna come off inappropriate, but EVERYTHING about you is boiling." You turn the paper around to show the image of your husband.
A proud smile on your face, you leaned in close to the camera, covering one side of your face from Chris, "you know, I try to get him to recreate that scene every day." You whispered, leaning back from the camera; you shrugged. "But he won't do it." You chuckled.
Chris shook his head, chuckling. Looking back up, you saw his publicist call for one more tweet. You nodded slightly, pulling the last tweet from the lot. Opening it, you stifled another laugh. You looked over to Chris and gestured him to come over, "Babe, C'mere and read this one." You smiled; Chris got up from his chair, making his way over to you. You gave him the paper, standing, he took your seat.
Sitting on his lap. You wrapped your arm around his neck; Chris looked at the camera, giving a slight smirk before reading the tweet, "This tweet said, Saw an old interview saying @ChrisEvans wants to marry a woman who gets emotional over dogs and babies... does that include making them?" He laughed, and so did you. "So, did you marry a woman that does?" You looked at Chris, who was already nodding. Holding your waist, he leaned forward in the chair, "I did indeed. She especially loves Dodger." He winks, "does that include making babies?" You chuckled, and he laughed, "That very much does." Chris spoke.
The pair of you laughing, you looked back to the camera. "This has been so much fun! Thank you, Buzzfeed and the people, for your thirsty tweets." both of you smiled, waving to the camera.
Chris collected you into his arms, bridal style, walking you both out of frame. Both you and Chris thanked the teams, and Chris' publicist finished up with the teams. You were both on your way home, laughing about all the tweets. It wasn't a given, your husband was hot, and you couldn't blame others for thinking the same thing.
Chris driving, you had your hand holding one of him. You looked over to him, smiling.
"You think you'd do a good Christian Grey impression, hon?" You asked lightly and watched as a smile tugged at his lips.
"I've been working on it." He replied.
"Show me when we get home?" You asked, and Chris keenly nodded.

This is my first weekly reading log. I've been reading some incredibly lovely fics so I figured why not share that excitement with others :) Just a little warning that most of the fics this week are explicit. My favourites are marked with 🌻
🌻 SPELEVINK by Ginny_Potter @hipsterdiva [Stucky, 9k, General]
Bucky’s back. He’s leaving me messages through IKEA plushies, Steve texts Sam. jesus christ, rogers, Sam texts back.
Or, Bucky lives in an IKEA Tiny Apartment, Steve is a dancing monkey once again, and somehow they find their way back to each other.
🌻 I Want To Teach You A Lesson In The Worst Kind Of Way by fandomfluffandfuck @fandomfluffandfuck [Stucky, 61k, Explicit]
Bucky is not an arts major, not even close. He's getting his master's in Biotechnology with dreams of going into the sort of half related medical field of biotechnology prosthetics, inspired by a childhood pet, a three legged cat called Alpine. However, the schooling system (one that normally he doesn't mind too much because he's that much of a nerd) demands that he take a variety of classes; even if they don't pertain towards his immediate interests. An art elective is one of those required unrelated classes. He's not interested.
Not yet anyway; whether he likes it or not he might end up discovering an interest in art. Or. At least an interest in the professor teaching the art credit fulfilling class as it pertains to his... non-school related interests...
i got it bad for you by howdoyousleep @howdoyousleep3 [Evanstan RPF, 4k, Explicit]
“Yeah? Older?”
“Yeah yeah, just…I don’t know, the beard? This fucking hair? Just…I don’t know— older,” he manages to chuckle nervously, gasping into Chris’ mouth when their squirming leads their dicks into lining up beautifully. Seb aches, yearns, mouth watering as he mewls, both hands in Chris’ hair as he licks into Sebastian’s mouth.
And then Chris pulls back, breathes hot on Sebastian’s cheek, his bottom lip, croons, “Like your Daddy?”
bet i look nice on you by howdoyousleep [Stucky, 1k, Explicit]
“C’mon, you said you wanted to feel, said you were up for a challenge,” Steve taunts lowly, peering up at Bucky from where he sits. “Daddy, want it. Daddy, wanna feel you for days,” he tacks on in a nasally exaggerated voice, one used with the full intention on making Bucky embarrassed, uncomfortable.
It works.
Aut Cum Scuto, Aut In Scuto by humapuma [Stucky, 33k, Explicit]
Bucky never thought he would find his Omega at just twenty-years-old. Mates usually found each other around twenty-two or twenty-three, so he was overjoyed to learn that their bond was so strong, they were drawn to one another early. Until Bucky's family attorney informed him that his Omega - Steve - was not only a long-time activist and a successful nurse, he was actually thirty-six.
Steve never thought he would find his Alpha. It had been more than ten years since they were supposed to come together, and he had long-since given up waiting. So, when a kid slammed into him on the street and tried to claim him, Steve was more than a little surprised.
Can these two overcome their differences, presumptions, and their pasts to find one another on the other side?
I didn't want the scars to show by Bittersweet_In_Boston [Stucky, 8k, Mature]
“This is Steve, one of my...co-workers,” Barton says teasingly. “Steve, this is James Barnes, the tattoo artist I was telling you about.”
Steve has heretofore been dumbstruck as he looks at James Barnes, because he is the most beautiful human Steve’s ever met, with the possible exception of Peggy 70 years ago. His long dark hair is pulled into a messy bun at the back of his head, and it frames the face of an angel, with a long-aquiline nose, a wide sensitive mouth, cheekbones to cry over, and a jawline that could kill at twenty paces, covered with a light layer of stubble.
And most importantly, large grey-blue eyes that light up and scan over Steve as Barnes shakes his hand.
“Nice to meet you, Steve,” he says in his husky voice, and this is where Steve has to remind himself how to be a functioning human being in a society.
“Good to meet you too, James,” Steve says, his voice only cracking a little. James’ hand is warm and strong and dry, and Steve could happily hold it forever. He does let go after a few seconds like a normal person, however.
“Bucky. Call me Bucky,” says James. “Everyone does.”
“OK...Bucky,” Steve says, and this time his voice behaves.
🌻 grassroots by howdoyousleep [Stucky, 11k, Explicit]
Bucky has been waiting for a moment like this.
Under the guise of a work trip, he joins Senator Rogers in New York City for his good friend Sam Wilson’s campaign fundraiser for Governor of New York. All that consumes Bucky’s mind at first is Steve’s insistence on sharing a room, a bed, so much so that he is caught entirely off guard by something much less conspicuous—one Steve Rogers back in Brooklyn.
In just two days Bucky learns more about Steve than he could have ever anticipated, and although it’s only forty-eight hours, it begins to shift their relationship, blind to the two of them. From stories about his mama to where to get the best pizza in the borough, Steve shares a side of himself with Bucky that few have ever been able to see before…
🌻 I Can't Do Everything (But I'll Do Anything For You) by Musette22 (with art from rufferto) @musette22 [Stucky, 24k, Explicit]
Steve Rogers cares about a lot of things, but dating isn’t one of them – much to his fellow Avengers’ bemusement. It’s just never been very high on his list of priorities, falling somewhere behind his work, his friends, his hobbies, and that excellent pepperoni pizza from Vinnie’s on Flatbush Ave.
That is until one night, Natasha drags Steve out to a charity music concert by some hotshot singer that Steve has never actually heard of (which would surprise exactly no one, seeing as Steve is still partial to his records and his radio plays). And as soon as Steve lays eyes on Grammy-award winning musician and international heartthrob James Barnes for the very first time, suddenly he wonders if maybe dating wouldn’t be so bad after all. Dating James Barnes, specifically, that is. The question is just: how does one go about that? Especially one like Steve, who’s never wooed anybody in his century-long life, let alone a man. Let alone a man with long, dark hair, tattoos all over his arms, and a fanbase that rivals Steve’s own.
It’s not like he can just go up to him and say something like, "You and me babe, how about it?"

above the ground (ao3) buck x eddie, 1.3k, domestic fluff, trees of vermont for the second day of @eddiediaz‘s birthday week celebration!
--
The first time Eddie catches Buck staring up at the trees in the backyard he’s just finished pulling all the yellow tile out of their bathroom, plaster dust still coating his arms. Buck had heaved a box full of the cracked clay into the outdoor garbage can, turned to walk back to the house, and just—stopped. “You good?” he asks, and Buck visibility shakes himself out of his reverie.
“Yep,” he says, glancing down at Eddie’s empty hands. “Was that the last of it?”
“Still another pile,” Eddie says, and follows behind him when Buck claps him on the shoulder and pushes past him on the way back into the house.
--
The second—and third—time they’re barbecuing. Or, well, they aren’t, but Bobby is, taking over their backyard because theirs is being reseeded. Eddie’s not doing much of anything; the kids are running around the yard, Buck and Chim are in the middle of dragging Bobby’s patio table over so they all have places to sit, Karen is swatting at Athena’s hand when she reaches into the salad bowl to pinch an olive between her fingers.
Buck drops into the chair next to him after the table placement is approved by Hen, threading their fingers together with an easy sigh and accepting the cold bottle Eddie hands him gratefully. His head is tipped back, eyes trained on the far corner of the yard, one of the corners of his mouth pinched thoughtfully.
“Planning something?” Eddie says, because he knows that look. That’s the look that caused them to strip and restain all the hardwood floors downstairs the weekend before, the look that preceded Buck’s proposal that they rip out the out-of-place island in the kitchen, take out the crappy wire shelving in the pantry and replace it with wood, and while they’re at it, Buck’s never liked the placement of the refrigerator anyway.
“Maybe,” Buck says. He sounds far away, and Eddie wonders what havoc he’ll bring to the house now.
“Cool,” is all he says. There hasn’t been anything Buck’s done that he hasn’t liked—fish scale tile in Christopher’s bathroom aside, because that was one hundred percent his son’s choice. “You know where the credit card is.”
--
In retrospect, he shouldn’t have been surprised when he comes home a week later and there’s a pile of lumber sitting in the corner of the backyard.
--
The plans for the treehouse are stretched across Buck’s desk, and Eddie runs his fingers over the detailed sketch, the trunk of the tree it’s all built around. If he’s reading it right, it’s meant to be just fifteen feet off the ground, an octagonal structure with a deck that faces the backyard, an enclosed room at the back, a staircase that spirals up to it.
“I would have put it up higher, but I had to work around city ordinances,” Buck says from behind him. He’s leaning against the doorframe, arms crossed loosely over his chest. “That’s as tall—and as big—as I could make it without applying for waivers.”
“This is amazing,” Eddie says, glancing back at the plans. “I didn’t even know Chris wanted a treehouse.”
Buck huffs out a laugh. “Well,” he says, “he hasn’t said anything to me, either. But one of his classmates was talking about backyard camping and how cool it would be to have a treehouse to live in during the summer, and the look on Chris’ face—I just thought it would be pretty easy to give him.”
Eddie’s going to marry this man. “You need help with it?”
“Yeah, but I’m not sure when we’ll get started. I called an arborist—don’t look impressed, it was Bobby’s idea, he said we should get the whole yard checked before any more trees decide to crash through the roof—and I’m waiting to schedule with them. Don’t wanna start building before I know if the tree can hold it.”
“Chris is gonna be thrilled,” Eddie says. “But I hope you know that you’re the one sleeping out there with him. I’ve done my time sleeping outdoors.”
Buck laughs and pulls him close. “He’s almost eight, Eds. Let him and Denny go out on their own, and we can have some fun in here.”
Eddie pauses, hands on Buck’s warm, solid side. “You know he’s gone for the next few hours, right?”
Buck still closes the door behind them.
--
Maybe Eddie should be over a shirtless and sweaty Buck, but it’s a sight he never wants to drag his eyes away from. The last weeks of summer have been blisteringly hot, so naturally Buck decided that it would be the best time to build.
Eddie has no complaints—except when Chim starts calling him over to help.
They’d started early, driving a rented lift into the backyard just after sunrise so they could get the frame built out around the tree. Eddie had done his part by staying out of the way and making sure there were enough bagels to satisfy even Buck’s insatiable hunger, picking up lunch from Bobby’s when they took a mid-day break, and was about to disappear again when Chim called his name.
“Eddie,” he says, hands on his hips fifteen feet up, straddling two of the cross-sections that radiate from around the tree, “getting the base down would go a lot faster if you could hoist the planks up to us.”
In the end, Eddie is almost as sweaty as they are, arms pleasantly sore in a way they haven’t been in a very long time.
The build takes three days; they finish the round base and railing on the first day, the staircase takes them all of Sunday, and Buck is antsy all week, never getting home early enough to get started on the enclosed section without losing the light. Christopher walks up the stairs daily, spreading himself out on the base and laughing when Eddie aims the hose up at him.
Buck’s up at daybreak the next weekend, the sound of hammering waking Eddie from what had been a good dream. He’d made Eddie promise not to let Chris watch the progress, so as soon as Chim knocks on the door, Eddie takes Chris and leaves, spends the day running errands and waiting for Buck to give them the all clear, a text that doesn’t arrive until it’s nearly dinner time.
He picks up pizza on his way home, tries not to laugh at the way Chris bypasses the front door and goes immediately around the side of the house, yelling for Buck as he does. Eddie slows his steps—he knows Buck and Chris are already bonded, that they love being around each other, but he wants to give them a moment that’s just for them after Buck has done something so incredibly huge for his son.
Chris is already in the enclosed section when he makes his way up the staircase, and it’s nothing like he had imagined. This isn’t the cheap, hastily built treehouses he’d seen while looking for houses—it’s like a log cabin up in a tree, and although he can see the exhaustion in Buck’s body as he walks around with Chris, the only expression on his face is the excitement that’s mirrored on Christopher’s.
“Buck says we can sleep up here tonight!” Chris says excitedly, tugging on his hand. “I’m gonna go pack my stuff!”
--
“Air mattresses are less comfortable than I remembered,” Buck says much later that night, after Chris had already dropped off to sleep. “Maybe we should get real beds in here.”
“Maybe you were right about letting him be on his own,” Eddie says, linking their fingers together. It’s far from the worst place he’s slept, but Eddie’s a creature of comfort now. “We can give them walkies to check in. I’m calling Hen first thing tomorrow.”

Smutty Sunday Drabble
In honor of the lovely @stargazingfangirl18 @what-is-your-backupplan-today @bluemusickid @sweater-daddiesdumbdork @autumnrose40 sending in hilarious suggestions for my Vibe With Me vibrator name game last night, as promised, here’s the reward - a smutty drabble just for you!
(Warning, 18+, please do not read if you are uncomfortable with sexual content or RPF or are underage)
Tumblr media
It could have been anything. Flowers, chocolates, jewellery, lingerie…anything. This was completely unexpected.
Chris would usually give you a parting gift when he was working on location. A little something to sweeten the deal, because he knew how much you hated it when he left. This time, however, he’d decided to shake things up. When you’d unwrapped it, you tapped out a text to your closest friend, half amused, half confused.
Was anyone going to tell me that vibrators you can control through Wi-Fi long-distance were actually real and not a shitpost or did I just have to find that out for myself??
The silicone shifts inside you as you curl up on the sofa. For something that was supposed to be a pleasure tool, this felt pretty damn uncomfortable. Pouring yourself a glass of wine, you open your laptop and pull up Zoom. Where was he? You needed to see him. And you sure as shit needed to get off tonight.
Ten minutes and one more glass of wine later, there he was.
“Christopher,” you cock an eyebrow over the rim of your wine glass “you’re late.”
“Sorry babe, long day on set.”
“If you follow that up by saying you’re tired then I’m hanging up. I put on my nicest sweats. I’ve got that vibe shoved up my hoo-hah for God’s sake. It’s not making me feel good right now.”
Chris guffaws. “Wait until I turn it on.” He winked. “You wanna try it out now?”
You gulp your wine, slam the glass down on the table and relax your legs, pairing the device to your phone.
“Alright, I’m logged into the pleasure cloud. Let’s do this.”
“Is that what it’s called?” Chris’s brow furrows with curiosity.
“Nope, just being creative. You know how much I like that.” You smirk.
“I sure do. Want me to go easy on you?”
“Since when have you ever gone easy on me?” You tease. “Do your worst.”
“Yes ma’am.” He lilts, making your clit twitch.
As the first wave of vibrations courses through your walls, you place your hands on your knees, pulling them a little further apart. The second wave is stronger, but comes in short bursts. He knows exactly what he’s doing. Your fingers tense against your knees as you inhale sharply.
“Changed your mind yet?” Chris asks, sending another spark into your core.
“Oh God…” You moan. “Yes.”
“Does that feel good? Do you want more?” Chris’s tone is playful, smug. His eyes glisten with lust.
“Fuck, yes, Chris, yes.” You rock your heels and press your back into the sofa. “God I wish you were here.”
“You miss me that much?”
A staccato burst of pleasure hits you again. “Fuck, yes. God I want you to fuck me so bad.”
“Good things come to those who wait.” He’s visibly turned on, breath hitching.
“Too late,” you sigh, gripping the soft fabric of your sweats, “I’m coming.”
As soon as the words leave your mouth, Chris pushes back from his desk, chest beginning to heave. He unbuckles his pants, the phone dropping to the floor. You only need each other now. You reach your peak in fumbled, low-resolution unison.
All things considered, you could definitely get used to this.

Codes | Bangchan College! AU
Chan takes an interest in the generous computer science major and makes it his mission to befriend her. (Content Warning: Mild swearing, suggestive language). Word Count: 1286 | Part 1 | Part 4
Tumblr media
You awoke with an ache in your whole body. Your head was pounding and you didn’t even want to open your eyes.
You sighed and slowly opened them, immediately blinded by the sun.
“Oh jesus fuck.” you groaned, covering your eyes with your arm.
“Good morning to you too.” a voice said.
You pulled your arm away and turned and saw Chris in a muscle shirt. Suddenly all the memories from last night came back again.
In that moment, you also realized your surroundings, you were on the couch, you had a soft blanket draped over you and your hair was damp from last night’s shower.
“I am so sorry about last night.” you said softly, still shielding your eyes from the sun coming in from the window.
“Don’t worry, I’ve seen worse.” Chan gave you a warm smile before bringing you a glass of water and an alka seltzer.
“Thanks.” you said as you took the glass.
“Jeongin’s still asleep but he wanted me to ask you if you wanted to go to breakfast later.”
“I can’t imagine eating when I feel this shitty.” you mumbled as you drank the seltzer water.
Chan nodded in understanding, “We can get lunch later if you want.”
You nodded and you both sat in silence for a moment, simply staring at each other.
“You like sandwiches?” he asked.
“I guess? They’re kind of a comfort food of mine since I can get stressed pretty easily.” you replied, wondering how he knew to begin with.
He nodded in response, “How close are you with Jeongin?”
“Well, we’ve known each other for maybe a year or so. He’s a sweet guy, we’ve helped each other a lot despite not knowing each other for too long.” you explained, “How long have you known him?”
“Maybe three or four years, we’re really close. I’m a bit disappointed you and I didn’t cross paths sooner.”
“Why would you wanna cross paths with me?”
Chan internally punched himself, “Well, you seem like a charming and assertive person.”
“Are you into assertive people?” You asked, feeling a bit bold despite the early hour.
“Not really, I’m just particularly into you.” He grinned at you, his dimples seeing the light of day.
You felt yourself blush, you had never noticed his dimples until now, and they only made him even more attractive. “Who’s the assertive one now?”
Before Chan could speak, Jeongin let out a big yawn before entering the kitchen, “Let’s go to breakfast.”
“Actually, y/n––”
You interrupted Chan, “Yeah, let’s go.”
You all decided to wear some more presentable clothes and head down to a nice cafe.
While getting ready, you replayed that moment with Chan over and over.
When the three of you were ready, Chan took his car and drove the three of you to the cafe. In the process, you’d occasionally catch him looking at you in the rearview mirror.
When you had arrived at the cafe you sat yourself down, ordered and talked amongst yourself.
After that moment with Chris, you felt different. Not in a bad way of course, but rather, you didn’t look at him the same. After over analyzing the small moment with him over and over you realized that maybe he had some sort of attraction to you. And maybe the events of last night were a product of that.
Or maybe you were overthinking again.
“Are you feeling better?” Chris asked you, bringing you out of your thoughts.
“Yeah, maybe all I needed was to get out a bit.” You smiled politely at him.
“How’d it go last night Chris?” Jeongin asked as he sipped his tea.
“Ask y/n,” they both looked at you and you looked back at them blankly.
“Alright, I threw up and showered, what more do you want me to say?” You deadpanned.
“That’s all you remember?” Chris said, surprised.
Your eyes widened, “You mean I did more embarrassing things?”
“You did try to kiss––” You interrupted Jeongin.
“Okay, shut up, I don't need to hear anymore.” You rubbed your temples, your head beginning to ache again.
“It wasn’t a bad experience.” Chan said laughing.
“So I did kiss you?” You said, your face getting more red by the second.
“No, but it was cute seeing you try.” He gave you another one of his adorable, dimpled grins, causing you to melt in your seat.
“I was drunk and you didn’t try to stop me from embarrassing myself?” You said turning to Jeongin.
“I wasn’t there to experience it sadly.” Jeongin said, shrugging.
The thought of you trying to kiss Chris and him not taking advantage of you, surprised you. At this rate, most college guys would’ve done anything to get a drunk girl in bed. But not Chan.
The more you talked to Chris, the more you realized he was a genuine, caring guy.
You hummed in response to Jeongin and sipped your coffee.
__
Chan drove you home and nothing else really happened the rest of your Saturday. Sunday was equally uneventful. Monday, you were a bit more excited for your coding class with the hopeful thought of seeing Chan.
The rest of your classes that led up to your coding class felt like they were never ending, and made your day drag along painfully slow.
When you walked through the doorway, you gave the room a quick once over and saw Chan staring hard into his computer screen, prompting him to not notice you had walked in.
You sat in your usual spot and settled yourself into your space, before logging into the desktop before you to prepare yourself for the array of assignments awaiting you.
You heard a tiny whisper behind you, “Care to let me code my way into your heart?” You turned and saw Chan giving you a little smile, those same dimples teasing you.
“That’s the worst pick up line I’ve ever heard.” You whispered back as you let your lips curl into a smile.
“I could tell you a better one if you let me take you out sometime.”
Your stomach turned, you felt yourself get nervous, and your hands began to perspire a little.
“When and where?” You whispered.
“Friday night maybe 8PM, a nice dinner at a good restaurant I know that’s in Gwangju.”
“I’ll think about it.” You said before turning back around to face your computer.
Yes, you’d love to go on a date with Chan, hell you were ecstatic that he had asked you out.
But you were shy, and although you found him attractive, and charming, and genuine, you were scared.
You didn’t know Chan that well, so you decided to consult with a friend.
That friend being Jeongin.
After class ended, Chan made some conversation with you about your day, and what your other interests were before you went separate ways.
Immediately after this, you called Jeongin of course.
“Hellooooo,” Jeongin said when he picked up.
“Hey innieeeee,”
“What’s up?”
“I kinda need your help.”
“With what?”
“Chan asked me out.” You replied in a hushed tone, as if somehow Chan were listening.
“Oh my god he wasn’t joking.” Jeongin whispered
“He told you beforehand?” You replied surprised.
“Yeah, obviously I didn’t tell you ‘cus i thought he was joking.” He said.
“Do I say yes?”
“Dude I don’t know, I mean I’m not the one getting asked out afterall.”
“Uh could you be a bit more supportive and help?”
“Y/n, Chan is a nice, trustworthy guy. If you think he’s worthy of your time, then say yes.”
“Thanks Jeongin.”
“Anytime sweetheart.”
You bid your goodbyes and decided that tomorrow after class, or the next time you saw him, you’d let him know your decision.

I’m Always Curious Part Twenty Three
Previous Part | Next Part |  Masterlist Notes: I hope everyone’s having a good week 💕 Also some of y’all have asked when they’re gonna frickle-frackle and they definitely did during the last chapter but since this fic is rated T, I can only allude to it 👀 Which is why I mentioned what I mentioned about the gif in the note. Read the notes, y’all! Warnings: Uuuuh none Summary: I had gone stock-still when I’d realized we weren’t on the Enterprise.
Tumblr media
I had only had the pleasure of meeting Admiral Cornwell over holograms and viewscreens. Slight though she was, I found her incredibly imposing. Of course, it probably didn’t help that I was severely under prepared. I had expected to beam up to the Enterprise for a holo-conference, and here I was on the Admiral’s personal craft, out of uniform, delinquent because my communicator was off.
I had gone stock-still when I’d realized we weren’t on the Enterprise, but Una poked me hard in the back, spurring me into stepping forward and introducing myself after the Admiral had done the same.
“What-- What can I do for you, Admiral?” I asked, clasping my hands behind my back. “I’m sending you on a special assignment to Larilia.” “What about the attaché? Is it really so bad that I need to be on-world?” “I understand that you believe the situation there is not dire based on the conversation we had earlier this week, but it has grown exponentially worse since we spoke last. I’ll brief you on our way, but I assured the Co-Chancellors that you would be there within the solar day.” My stomach churned uneasily. “Admiral, with respect, I did not negotiate their deescalation alone. Captain Pike and I worked on it together, I’m not adept at steering these conversations alone.” Cornwell arched a critical brow at me. “Well you're not being sent to put a stop to an eighty-year-old conflict this time. And according to the logs retrieved from the initial Larilian negotiations, as well as testimony given by both Pike and the Co-Chancellors, you recommended the de-escalation of Willfall.” “I was trying to divert Spargo from doing anything else dickish.” Where I cringed at my phrasing, Cornwell’s lips quirked in amusement. “It also shows on your records that you attended intensives for Diplomacy, Interspecies Protocol, Leadership - Basic, and Intergalactic Relations the last time you were at the Academy," She added. Why was all of my hard work the last time we had leave coming back to bite me? “...Well there weren’t any intensives on Klingon Poetry,” I joked. No one laughed. “I’ll give you time to beam down to the Enterprise, gather some things. But we need to be quick about this,” Cornwell said. I swallowed thickly, nodding a little. -- Packing was a flurry. I was trying to anticipate what I’d need while on Larilia, which surely couldn’t be much, right? I hadn’t seen anything but my guest quarters and the conference room the last time I’d been there. Una had beamed back down to Novisis after a firm (but warm) pat on the arm.
By the time I was back aboard the Cornwell’s captain’s yacht, my bag beside the chair and sitting in the co-pilot’s seat, nerves were beginning to settle in my stomach. My communicator beeping snapped me out of it, and I frowned. Who-- Oh. “Excuse me,” I muttered, standing and rounding the co-pilot’s seat. I hurried down the hall, back to the cargo room before I flicked it open. “You’re on a ship to Larilia?” Chris sounded almost dazed as his voice crackled through. “I’m sorry,” I groaned, leaning back against the wall, “I meant to comm before but I had to pack fast-- Cornwell promised the Chancellors I’d be there before the day’s out.” There was a moment of quiet on the other end of the communicator, and I waited, heart thumping in my ribs. “...Guess you’re gonna be a little longer than half an hour, then,” He finally said. I cracked a small smile, lowering myself to sit on a bench. “Maybe forty-five minutes,” I conceded. Chris chuckled tiredly. “I’m sorry,” I added. “It’s alright.” “Do you know where the Enterprise is heading to next?” “Our orders from command are sending us to the Pergamum Nebula.” “The Pergamum?” I repeated, brow furrowing as I leaned back against the wall of the ship; that was on the opposite end of the Beta quadrant than Larilia, “Well… As far as we know, there isn’t much out there. You wouldn’t need me anyway.” “And if we’re wrong?” “You’ve got Thaleh and Pal.” “I know.” We went quiet for a few moments. “So,” I peered down the hall to see if Cornwell was coming looking for me, “What do you think you’ll do with your last day of leave?” “Una said that there are a fair few holochambers around. I’ve been meaning to give them a go.” “You ought to. There are some really great flight sims. Could relive some of your test-piloting.” “That a fact?” “Uh-huh. I used to spend hours on them.” “I might just give that a shot, then,” Chris conceded, “Let me know what you get to Larilia.” “Sure. Let me know when you’re headed for the Pergamum?” “I will. We’ll figure out getting you back to the Enterprise.” “I’ve gotta do my job on Larilia first,” I reminded Chris, smiling. “You feel alright about that?” Chris asked. “...Yeah,” I answered after a moment. “Wanna try that again?” I laughed a little bit, tipping my head back, “It’s fine,” I shook my head, though he couldn’t see me, “I’m just-- I think I’ll feel better once I’m there, you know, see what I’m really dealing with.” “If you need me, I’m a call away.” “I know,” I murmured, resting my head back against the wall again, “I should get back to Cornwell.” “Alright. Be careful out there.” “You be careful,” I teased. “Yes ma’am. Pike out.”
I closed my communicator, looking down at it for a few moments. As badly as I wanted to remain in that warm exchange, as badly as I wanted to be back in bed with him, I couldn’t be there. I was on my way to Larilia, with an unfamiliar Admiral to a diplomatically tense situation.

Canoe Trip 1 - July 18th
[1:49]
Chan slowed as he heard crying. Chris and Minho slowed too, looking through the darkness towards the bonfire area. It was the middle of the night. Some people might be up taking their campers to the bathroom like him but who would be crying?
“Go back to the tent,” Chan said.
“Are you-” Chris started.
“Just go,” said Chan. “I’m gonna see what’s going on.” The two did as he said, albeit reluctantly. He knew they wanted to help, particularly Chris, but he had no clue who would be up crying and they didn’t need the extra attention. They weren’t too far away but they were certainly out of earshot of the tents.
Chan shone his flashlight through the darkness. He got closer and closer to the fire pit and the crying got louder. He heard someone moving around, still sniffling. As he reached the logs he found Wonyoung curled up behind the log, crying. When she saw him she started sobbing even harder.
“Hey,” Chan said softly. He placed his flashlight down on the log. “Hey, Wonyoung why are you out here all alone”
“I ran away,” she sniffed. “The tent is scary.”
Chan sat down next to her. “Yeah, they can be really freaky.”
Wonyoung wiped some of her tears on her sleeve. “I don’t wanna go back.”
Chan gave her a sympathetic smile. “Sleeping in a tent can be kinda scary. It’s really different from being in the cabins.”
“I miss my mom,” she said, starting to cry again. “I wanna go home.”
Chan wrapped an arm around her and she started to cling to him. “It’s really hard being homesick. You know when I got here I called my mom because I missed her.”
“But you’re all grown up,” Wonyoung said.
“Yep, but sometimes I miss my mom too,” he said, patting her head. “It’s normal to miss the people you love.”
Wonyoung thought for a moment. “I don’t know what to do,” she sniffed, leaning into his shoulder.
“Well, we should go find Gahyeon. She’s going to be scared too when she finds out you snuck out. And you’ll need to find somewhere to sleep-”
“Noooooo~” she whined.
“Hey, it’s okay. It’ll be okay. I know you can do this. And tomorrow, when we get back to camp, we can ask Seungcheol if you can call her mom to tell her about camp so far.”
“Can I?” She looked up at Chan, excited.
“I don’t think he’ll say no to you,” Chan said.
Just then, they heard footsteps and Gahyeon’s voice, calling out Wonyoung’s name in a loud whisper.
“Over here,” Chan called back. The footsteps got closer until Gahyeon came into view through the darkness.
“Wonyoung!” She cried. “I’ve been worried sick. What happened to you?”
“The tent is scary,” she said, curling in even closer to Chan.
Gahyeon crouched down in front of her. “I know it is. But you can’t just leave, okay? I don’t want you getting hurt.”
“I’m sorry,” she mumbled.
“It’s okay,” said Gahyeon, ruffling her hair. “But we should get to bed.”
Wonyoung looked between the two of them. “Can I go with Chan?”
“Ah- Wonyoung I d-”
“It’s okay,” said Chan quickly. “I have room.”
Gahyeon bit her lip, clearly looking worried. He could imagine all the things stressing her out about this.
“Chris and Minho are pretty chill and I have space. And then she can come get her stuff in the morning.”
“Well, o-okay then,” Gahyeon said, still unsure.
“It’ll be okay,” the three of them stood up as Chan leaned in close to her. “Don’t worry, I’m not gonna tell anyone. Let’s just get her somewhere she’ll sleep. I know you’ve been helping her with this all day.”
Gahyeon finally nodded as they headed back to the tents. “Alright. Wonyoung have a fun sleepover okay?”
“Okay,” she smiled, seeming a little bit better now.
Before they split ways Chan felt Gahyeon take his hand and squeeze it. He felt his stomach flip at the gesture. She mouthed a tired “Thank you” at him before climbing back into her tent.

China Doll 🎎Andy Barber
Tumblr media
Part 1
Part 2
Warnings: smut, language, daddy kink, straight up nastiness, dom!Andy, face sitting, angst, protected, this is a 2 parter
Tags: @rebellious-desires @mrsbanreswillseeyou @eclecticblkgirl
Relationship: Andy Barber x black plus sized reader
Being an intern for Andy Barber was fun so far. In the year that I’ve worked here I’ve been treated with nothing but respect and to say my boss was eye candy was an understatement. Yet he’s married. Me and Andy have gained an amazing repertoire with each other becoming more so friends that boss and intern. It’s just his coworkers who have yet to respect me and I don’t wanna day anything because they have more seniority than I do and I don’t wanna damage my internship
“Blondie file these for me” Neal drops an entire stack of files on my desk on top of the stack I already have and by the looks of it I’ll be here all night. Neal was the one who hired me but I sort of migrated to working with Andy majority of the time. I cut him a side eye and he smirks staring at me with lingering eyes that don’t reside on my face, more so on my breasts. I wish I could slap that smirk off his face. He’s the only who calls me Blondie because he doesn’t see my intelligence yet if I weren’t smart I wouldn’t be an intern at the most prestigious law incorporation in the world.
“Don’t call me that Neal I’ve told you before” I stand my ground daring him to do it again with my fierce eyes.
“Blondie” he chuckles walking away from me and I groan rubbing my hands over my face.
Tumblr media
I grab my midnight green iPhone 11 Pro Max and tap twice on it revealing the time. 7:32. I’ve been here for almost 10 hours. I stretch my neck rolling it and I stand up stretching allowing my shirt to to rise above my belly button showing my piercing. I let it fall and a door opens. That’s when I see Andy. Face long and tired but nonetheless he still works harder than ever.
“Hey China Doll I didn’t know you were still here” I nod. I’ve been told he calls me China doll because of my big pretty brown eyes. In Andy’s words not my own.
“Yea Neal is making me file all of these”
“Fuck him lets go to a bar” I chuckle at his jokes and vulgarity only to see he’s dead serious
“As much as I wish I could leave he’d fire on and this isn’t even a real job”
“Y/N I wouldn’t let him do that you’re my best girl here and frankly most hard-working” although this was true it’s something about the term ‘my best girl’ that leaves guilty butterflies floating in my stomach. Guilty because he’s married with a child “come on I’ll buy all your rounds” he smiles
“You don’t have to” I set down the files and grab my purse. I save and log out of my computer. Andy leads the way and I follow suit. He pulls the door open letting me go through before turning off the lights and locking up. We head outside to his Audi and my Lexus.
“I’ll follow you”
“Ok I know a bar just down the way” I nod and get in my car watching Andy get in his. I take a deep breath turning the engine. I’m really heading to a bar with my boss’s boss.
Tumblr media
Me and Andy are about 2 shots in and we’re giggling like children “ok take a shot if you’ve ever been blackout drunk” I watch Andy grab his glass as I grab my last and he watches me turn the glass letting the acidic liquid glide down my throat. I grab a lime sucking on it to decrease the taste of the brown liquor.
“You’ve never been blacked out?” He had one more shot that hasn’t been touched meaning I lost the game. Now that I’m really looking at him he looks hot. Maybe that’s the liquor getting to my head but it’s just something about the way he looks at me that makes me feel hot. “No my friends have but I haven’t”
“You wanna know something?” I smile leaning forward unconsciously. He does the same mocking me with a playful smile.
“I didn’t think you were this laid back. I was honestly scared of you” I laugh hiccuping
“I get more laid back than this” he smirks with suggestive eyes that create a pool in my underwear “Can I tell you something?” He asks
“What?”
“I’ve been thinking about you since the day you walked through those doors” and that’s when it began. The room got hot and my cheeks were flushed with sexual blush. That’s when I realized I wanted him right then and there.
“Do you mind if we leave?” I ask
Tumblr media
We bust through the door of my apartment and his hands are kneading my ass all while picking me up to wrap my legs around his hips. His soft lips are clad to mine and his perfect teeth graze at my bottom lip. I open my mouth inviting his tongue. The taste of tequila and mint consume me along with his powerful cologne that makes my knees buckle. Andy tears off my button down revealing the lacy red bra. He holds me up with one hand and the other moves to my hair pulling me back. He picks a broad stripe up my neck ending it with a hard duck making my clit jump.
He gets me to my bedroom laying me down and slithering up to my lips. I flip us around taking control as I kiss his neck. My skirt is hiked up to my waist and I pull it over my head throwing it on the floor. I grab the bottom of his shirt lifting it over his head discarding it with the rest of the clothes.
I feel how hard Andy is under me making me grind on him harder. He slaps the side of my ass. He grabs my throat pulling me down to his lips. He lets go of my lips with a smack and moves his lips to my ear kissing me softly “sit on daddy’s face” I couldn’t be wetter. With confidence I pull off my underwear and place both of my thighs on each side of his head resting my dripping pussy on his lips. Right off the bat Andy sucks my clit like a lollipop and my hands rest on top of his that are on my hips.
My body has a mind of its own as I rock against his hips. I look down at his steel blue eyes glimmering in the dim lamp light looking back at me. He lets out a beautiful moan and I bite my lip exhaling sharply. His tongue moves from my clit to my inside slurping me straight from the source. “Just like that” I moan. My right hand unclasps my bra taking it off and my other hand moves to his head keeping him steady as I ride his face. My moans get louder as he goes back to flicking my clit in a fast motion not hesitating to press his blunt nails into my hips holding me down.
Andy wraps his lips around my clit sucking on me like a leech. My vision becomes hazy, partly because the liquor is still in my system, as he keeps me in the same spot not able to move. My breath becomes more shallow and I try pulling off of his face feeling the pleasure become unbearable “it-it’s too much daddy it’s too much” I moan in a rushed tone He continues his assault until I’m screaming his name and cumming in his mouth. I hear his vulgar smacks and moans from under me making my body rock that much harder. Andy stops moving completely letting me ride out my orgasm on his face holding direct eye contact. This man is the devil.
Andy finally lets me go and he unlatches from me with a smack. I come off of his face watching his beard glisten and a smile on his face. “Fuck me please” I lean down kissing him tasting myself on his lips and tongue. My hand glides over his stomach grabbing his dick but he quickly grabs my hand flipping us around and pinning me to the bed. “Are you ready for it?”
“Yes daddy” Andy pulls down his boxers and he wasn’t lacking in neither width or length (I know y’all saw that Chris Evans leak😏). My jaw drops at his size and he chuckles “I haven’t seen that in a long time” he grabs a condom rolling it on getting prepared.
He starts with the head stretching me out a little. Now here goes the hard part. Andy keeps inching in me as I breathe through the pressure of my walls expanding accepting him gracefully. Once my clit is rubbing against his pelvis he’s fully inside of me, Andy starts off with small strokes along with peppering kisses along my face and jawline. “Faster daddy. Harder” he chuckles at my requests pulling out completely leaving me empty. Before I can demur he plunges back into me leaving my mouth wide open. Andy is rhythmic making sure I feel each and every inch when he reenters me with such passion. “Fuck you’re so tight. I gotta stretch that pretty little pussy out”
“Please stretch it out daddy fuck” my nails glide down his back which I know will leave marks. Andy’s hips ripple into mine with such force that drives my eyes to the back of my head. My jaw drops and Andy comes down kissing me with such passion if I were standing I’d be dizzy by now. He bites my lip still drilling me, my breathing is ragged and my moans are so loud my voice is getting hoarse “such a good little slut for me aren’t you princess”
“Yes yes yes” as he continues thrusting leading us both to the edge that wallowing coup de Grace is close to its mark. Andy wraps his hand around my throat squeezing to make me dizzy but I still have limited air. I bite my lip feeling his necklace hit the bottom of my chin. “Look at me when I make you cum” it’s damn near impossible but I manage to watch him. I grab the sheets and my body rocks as he pounds me through my soul shattering orgasm. Andy’s eyes close and he leans down placing his head in my neck never losing rhythm. “Fuck” he grabs the back of my neck pressing our foreheads together as he fills me with his seed mewling out. He starts slowing down once he’s bottoming himself out and comes to a stop leaving me sore but still very happy. Andy pulls out rubbing my clit making me jolt with how sensitive I am. He throws away the condom and lays next to me while I throw my arm across his chest. He cuddles me closer pushing me into a deep well needed sleep.
Tumblr media
I feel the sun poking through my curtains and a raging headache that’s making me dizzy. I notice I’m extra warm and I feel an arm around my waist and something poking me in my butt. I look back seeing Andy asleep and I smile then my smile fades and turns into a horrible frown. I tap Andy’s shoulder and he stirs in his sleep before opening his eyes. His phone vibrates in his jeans and he gets up grabbing it. His face goes blank and he answers the call “hey Laurie”
My jaw drops and I drop my head in my hands. I feel nauseous. Andy ends the conversation and looks at me “did we have sex last night?”
It’s a silly question I can feel the soreness between my legs. I stand up out of bed nearly falling over again from how weak my legs are.
“We did and that was Lauie” he says running his hands over his face. I start panicking and sit back on the bed. Obviously it’s clear he sees it. Andy comes over towering over me. He gets down on one knee lifting my leg over his shoulder kissing it softly “Andy you’re wife just called and I know she’s worried sick- oh fuck” his plump lips wrap around my clit “Andy we can’t- oh god” my back arches and I grab his head with the intent to move him away but my hands bring him closer as my breathing picks up. My hips roll along his face and I bite my lip as he continues sucking on my clit like he didn’t just assault it last night. “Andy we’re gonna be late for work Jesus”
“Mhmm” he hums going deeper and using 2 fingers to work at my entrance. He curls those 2 fingers sucking on my clit and hitting my g-spot like no tomorrow until I’m left leaking on his tongue and crying out his name. My legs shake trying to close his head in yet I want him away as the overbearing pleasure dizzies me.
“That’s my girl” he moans cleaning me completely. Andy stands up and I lay back just staring at the ceiling “come on now we’re almost late” he winks
“Wait I need to get my car”
“Ok I’ll wait for you to get ready” and that’s just what he does. Occasionally his wife would call and he’d talk to Jacob before school but other than that he was right there.
I’m all ready and dressed in a tight dress and he grabs his jacket that he had on last night. We get in Andy’s car and he drives off to the bar around the corner. Just watching him drive made me want a round 2 but he had a family to go home to and though I’ve already done so I don’t wanna interrupt that. Yet I already have. The guilt feeling consumes me again making me nauseous and overly dizzy.
“Andy pull over” I wretch and he obliges. I open the door vomiting whatever little food I had the night before. I cough letting all of my contents out while feeling Andy’s large hand rubbing my back. Once I’m finished he pulls over to my car and hands me some water. I gargle it walking to the back of the car spitting it out. I go in my purse and grab a piece of gum “I’ll let you know when I make it to the office” I make it to my car and he opens the door for me.
“Ok and Y/N” I look up at his dazzling blue eyes that are softened on me “I don’t want you to beat yourself up over this. I don’t regret it”
I nod and close my door pulling off.

Love Is Blind: Chapter Twenty-Four
“Robs, we got a meeting in five minutes,” Beverly stated as she stood beside Robyn’s desk.
“I know. I’m trying to find the vendor file for Albert’s. Question? Did you move some of my stuff off my desk while I was gone?”
“I unpacked that box that was delivered the day your boyfriend came by and moved some of your files to your inbox but that was it.”
“What was in the box anyway?”
“This,” Beverly pointed at a large marble figurine that was now sitting by her phone, “I left the card it came with in your top drawer. I’m surprised you didn’t notice it.”
“I’ve been on Zoom conference calls all day. I haven’t had time to look at my phone. It is beautiful though.”
“It is.”
“Did you read the card?”
“Thought about it but it seemed like a personal gift.”
“Well thank you for your restraint.”
Beverly laughed, “We need to get going to the meeting. I got paper copies of the presentation slides and of the vendor file, we’ll have to find the original later.”
“Works for me.”
Robyn grabbed her iPad and followed Beverly to the conference room.
“Just something for you to always remember me by and to brighten up your desk. Love you. Christopher.”
Robyn smiled as she read the words of the card. Chris got her a just-because gift. And it was expensive as hell, going by the price on the internet when she researched what the figurine was. It was a marble statue in the shape of two non-descript bodies, one male and one female, entwined with each other. She didn’t see one that looked exactly like the one Chris gave her so it seemed to be custom. She picked up her office phone and dialed a number. It rang for a few moments before she heard a voice, “Hello, Professor Brown speaking.”
“Professor Brown? I kind of like the sound of that.”
Chris laughed, “Hey Baby. What’s going on?”
“Nothing much. I just wanted to check on you. How are you?”
“I’m good. Getting back into the swing of things.”
“Regretting teaching for the summer yet?”
“Actually no. I got a pretty good set of students this summer. I’m happy about that.”
“That’s great but I wanted to thank you for my gift.”
“You finally opened the box?”
“The day you came over for lunch, I completely forgot about it. Bev unpacked it while we were in Pennsylvania. Why didn’t you say anything about it?”
“Because it was a gift, I didn’t want to assume you opened it already and then ruin the surprise.”
“I guess. Is it custom?”
“It’s one of a kind but I didn’t have it specially made. The artist doesn’t do mass production.”
“Well it’s beautiful. What made you pick that one?”
“It just seemed like something you would like. Was I right?”
“Very right. What you up to right now?”
“Just finishing up a lesson plan. Why?”
“You gonna be in your office for a while?”
“Maybe a few more hours. I got office hours this afternoon.”
“Cool.”
“What are you up to?”
“Nothing. Just wondering.”
“You sure?”
“I’m sure. Well I just wanted to thank you for my gift. I gotta finish up this proposal and take a nap.”
“You’ve been doing ok with working your normal hours?”
“As long as I sneak a nap in, I’m good.”
“Alright Baby. Finish your work and get some rest, I’ll see you at home.”
“Ok. Love you.”
“I love you too, Baby. Bye.”
“Bye.”
They hung up. Robyn glanced at the clock then looked down at the proposal on her desk, “that can wait until tomorrow.”
She logged into her computer system and pulled up the online order form for her favorite restaurant.
“Somehow I just knew you were gonna pull up on me,” Chris said as he opened his office door. He took the large cloth bag from Robyn’s hand as he leaned in to kiss her.
“I wasn’t going to but then I said what the hell, I haven’t seen your office yet.”
“You haven't?”
“Nope.”
“That’s crazy. I thought I brought you here before but regardless, I’m glad you’re here.”
“Me too. I needed to get out of the office.”
“Tough day.”
“Long day. I was gonna just take a nap and get back at it but I decided to just take the rest of the day off.”
“My couch is very comfy if you wanna stay and still take your nap.”
“I’m not trying to crowd your space, I just wanted to bring you something to eat for a change.”
“I like you in my space though.”
Robyn playfully rolled her eyes as she sat on the edge of his desk, “so what’s the lesson for the week?”
“We are working on basic scales on the piano. This is my beginner’s Piano class that I’m teaching this summer.”
“You teaching composition classes?”
“Not this summer. I didn’t want to teach anything too complex. Beginner’s Piano lets me relax a bit because if I don’t want to teach, teach, I can always give them practice notes and they can do that in lieu of class.”
“Ah, good thinking.”
“I have good ideas sometimes.”
Robyn chuckled, “so when are you gonna play for me again? It’s been a long time actually.”
“Well after lunch, I could take you to my classroom, I keep a keyboard in there for illustrations.”
“I’d love to.”
“Great. So we’ll eat, I take you around to see some stuff then we’ll go to my class.”
                                           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Dada!”
Chris pulled his attention from Robyn moving around the kitchen to Christian sitting on his lap. He carefully fixed his elongated curls and kissed his forehead, “what’s up, Baby Boy? Daddy not paying enough attention to you.”
Christian poked out his bottom lip and Chris chuckled, “your sister’s been teaching you a lot more than I thought.”
“Did he hit you with the pout?” Robyn asked with a laugh.
“He definitely did.”
“I took his teddy bear this morning and he did it to me. Isn’t it cute?”
“Yea until he realizes it’s power.”
Robyn laughed, “like Anesa has with you.”
Chris rolled his eyes, “whatever.”
“Our daughter has you wrapped around her finger and you know it.”
“She’s just like her mama.”
“I am not spoiled.”
“Yea. Right.”
“Well if I am spoiled, it’s your fault.”
“Whatever.”
Robyn chuckled, “you decide what you want for dinner?”
“Isn’t it a little early?”
“I’m in a cooking mood so I’d rather start while I feel like it.”
“I can cook dinner, Babe.”
“I know but I’m not asking you that. I’m asking what do you want to eat for dinner?”
Chris raised his brow at her and Robyn settled her hands on her hips as she tilted her head at him, “problem?”
“Nope.”
A big smile came over his face and Robyn’s brow furrowed in confusion, “why you smiling so wide?”
“Just realized something.”
“Something like?”
“I’ll tell you later.”
“Ok,” Robyn said softly, “you know what you want?”
“Oxtails.”
“Yellow rice or rice and peas?”
“Rice and peas.”
“Macaroni and cheese or cabbage?”
“Can you do both?”
“Yup. Dessert?”
“I’ll make it. What you thinking?”
“Apple pie with ice cream sounds good.”
“I can do that.”
“Good. I’ll get the oxtails started and in the crockpot so you’ll have your space for whatever you need to do.”
“Check and see if there’s any ingredients you need, me and the kids can go to the store for you.”
“I should be good. I did want to ask you something.”
“Anything, Baby. What’s up?”
“Do you have any friends?”
“Are you serious?”
“I’m very serious. I never hear about any or see you leave to hang out or anything.”
“I do have friends but we all have busy lives so we don’t get together as much. Also I did leave most of our friends behind in LA.”
“Do you ever regret leaving LA, separate from the divorce?”
“Honestly? No. We lived there for a long time so there’s not much I missed while living there. You?”
“I don’t know. I think we spent so much time together and traveling all over the place, LA was a home base but it wasn’t home, if that makes sense.”
“I get what you mean. You ever think about going back?”
“I’ve thought about going to visit but never actively made plans.”
“We should take the kids. Go to Disneyland, show them my other profession.”
“How is the firm doing?”
“It’s going well. I haven’t had any fires that needed to be put out so other than occasional conference calls regarding budgets and project approvals, I’ve been pretty hands off.”
“You ever thought about going back to being an architect?”
“I get the chance to still be a part of the industry being on the board so I don’t feel like I totally left in a sense.”
“Understandable.I also need to know if you’re going to my gala with me.”
“Of course. I’m your forever date, remember?”
“I don’t remember agreeing to that but ok.”
Chris shook his head with a laugh, “there you go being stubborn for no reason.”
Robyn laughed, “I’m just saying that I don’t remember saying that.”
“OK Wife.”
“Ok Boyfriend.”
Chris stuck his tongue out at her while he stood up with Christian in his arms, “I’m gonna put him down for his nap then I’ll be back to help cook. Don’t start without me, I need to see how you cook these”
“Oxtails are not difficult to make.”
“For someone who’s been making them most of their life, of course not.”
“Am I giving you a cooking lesson?”
“You could call it that.”
“I think you just want to be up under me.”
“Up under you and a whole lot more.”
“You lucky he’s still an infant and not repeating you just yet.”
“I got some time before we have to start speaking in code.”
“You’re silly.”
Chris left down the hall while Robyn began rummaging through the freezer.
“Ok, you can put the peppers in now,” Robyn instructed as she glanced over into the crockpot. Chris gathered a pile of chopped green pepper and dumped them into the vessel, “those aren’t chopped too big?”
“Nah, it’s gonna stew for a couple hours so they’ll break down. If we diced them to start with, they’ll disintegrate by time the food was done.”
“Oh, that makes sense.”
“So what exactly do you know how to cook?”
“Anything as long as I got the recipe.”
“You don’t cook from memory?”
“Some stuff, mainly stuff I’ve been eating the majority of my life but everything else, I need a recipe.”
“And here I was all impressed, thinking you were cooking from memory or something.”
“It was still good though.”
“It was but we’ll work on that part.”
“What part?”
“Learning to cook from the heart and not from a cookbook or Google search.”
“That sounds way easier than it is.”
“I think you’ll catch on quick. So earlier, what was that big smile all about?”
“What smile?”
“When I was asking you about what you wanted for dinner.”
“Just reminded me of when we were first married. You get pretty feisty once you get comfortable with someone.”
“I’ve always been comfortable with you.”
“No you haven't, especially since we were kind of pushed into the next step of the relationship before either of us were ready.”
“What you mean?”
“We had only been seriously dating for a few weeks then suddenly we’re moving in together. I’m sure that was not part of your plan at the time.”
“I honestly didn’t have a plan. You were the one ready to get married again.”
“Getting married again and having a baby are two totally different plans.”
“Another baby wasn’t in the plans?”
“Considering your age, I wasn’t exactly sure if you wanted to try for biological children, that’s why I never brought it up.”
“We never talked about kids?”
“No. Nesa asked you about it once but other than that, the discussion never came up. And that was before we were even dating.”
“We didn’t talk about a lot of stuff.”
“Not exactly my fault though.”
Robyn cut her eye at Chris and he shrugged his shoulders, “you had me walking on eggshells and you know it.”
“That was never my intention.”
“I know.”
“You know you could’ve broken up with me at some point.”
“That was never an option.”
“Why?”
“I trust you and your judgment, you know when you’re tripping and will adjust accordingly. It’d be stupid as hell to break up over something that’s easy to fix.”
“I guess.”
“Did you want to break up with me?”
“I didn’t even want to get back with you in the first place, remember?”
“Actually you did but you were afraid to, not the same thing.”
“Fear was the reason. Not dating was the action. You and your semantics again.”
Chris laughed as he grabbed a bottle of juice out of the fridge.
“What’s so funny?”
“You’re being feisty again.”
“You’re annoying.”
Chris chuckled as he walked over to her and leaned against the counter next to her. Robyn rolled her eyes as she placed the seasoned meat into the crockpot and put on the lid. She set it to high then turned to face Chris, “so what do you wanna do until dinner?”
“Let’s keep talking about this feisty attitude of yours.”
“I’d rather not,” Robyn pointed a wooden spoon in his direction, “and if that smirk turns into a laugh, I’ma pop you in the head with this spoon.”
“Now you’re threatening me? Oh, I should definitely start planning our wedding.”
“You get on my nerves.”
“And you love me.”
“You’re just a glutton for punishment.”
“Considering I dish it and don’t take it, I will disagree with that.”
“The lies.”
“I got some clips that say otherwise.”
“Shut up.”
Chris took a sip of his juice, “if you were to get married again, do you want a wedding or just a reception?”
“Neither. I’d rather just skip to the  honeymoon.”
“You wouldn’t want to celebrate?”
“Been there. Done that.”
“Wouldn’t hurt to make new memories though.”
“I just don’t want the theatrics. An uneventful proposal and marriage day works. Simple works just fine for me”
“Really?”
“Yea. What? You over there taking notes?”
“No, just asking questions.”
“I already know you’re gonna propose to me so you don’t have to play coy.”
“I’m not proposing tonight therefore I’m not playing coy.”
“Would you want a ceremony?”
“Something simple to mark the moment, yes.”
“Hmm…”
“Why you say it like that?”
“Just thinking. You wanna take a nap? The babies are still asleep.”
“Sure. Bedroom or couch?”
“Couch, it’s closer to the kitchen for when I gotta periodically check on the food.”
“Works for me.”
“When are you gonna make the pie?”
“About two hours or so before dinner, apple pie is better when it’s warm.”
“That’s true.”
“You gonna help me bake?”
“Considering my dessert resume only has pound cake on it, I’ll learn from you.”
Chris smiled then took another sip of juice.
“You and these damn smirks. What now?”
“Feisty then submissive. Just observing.”
“I am so over you right now.”
Robyn tossed the kitchen towel she was holding onto the counter and left out the kitchen with Chris’s laughter following her.
                                          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Chris, what are you doing here? I thought you had a class today,” Robyn said as she opened her office door. Chris held up a to-go bag from her favorite BBQ place and smiled, “I came to have lunch with my wife and today’s my free day, remember?”
“It definitely is. Well, this is nice. I was just thinking about you.”
“You were? About what?”
Robyn shrugged her shoulders as she grabbed napkins and plastic utensils from the basket underneath her coffee table. Chris sat down on the couch next to her as she handed him some wet wipes.
“Nothing specific. You just crossed my mind.”
“Should I be concerned?”
“Have you done something concerning?”
“No.”
“Then you don’t have to be concerned.”
Chris rolled his eyes and Robyn laughed, “forever the smart ass.”
“You asked. I answered. So what did you bring me to eat?”
“Chicken, hushpuppies and macaroni and cheese. Oh, and a Pepsi.”
“You are ruining my diet.”
“You aren’t on a diet.”
“Precisely my point, I can’t start with you feeding me like this.”
Chris laughed, “you don’t need to diet. As long as your doctor says you're healthy, the rest is welcomed to stay.”
“You just like my fat ass, you can say it.”
“You already did”
Robyn gasped and hit his arm, “you weren’t supposed to agree.”
“That ass is fat. I don’t know how you meant it but I know how I mean it and it’s perfect to me.”
“Whatever.”
“Do you really wanna lose weight or do you think I have a problem with your weight?”
“I don’t think you have a problem with my weight, considering how you always rubbing on my butt, hips and love handles, I’m getting the sense you’re enjoying it.”
Chris grinned at her and Robyn rolled her eyes, “but I’m still personally on the fence about it. I’m not as self-conscious but I’m still getting used to it.”
“Understandable. Well, since we’re talking about things you might still be on the fence about, I figured I’d get this question out of the way.”
“I know you are not proposing to me right now.”
“And if I was?”
“Chris, I am at work and sitting in front of you with Bbq sauce all over my hands and maybe on my face.”
Chris smiled as he used a napkin to wipe the corner of her mouth, “and you’ve never looked more beautiful to me.”
“This can’t be the moment. This is ghetto.”
Chris laughed, “This is not ghetto. This is real. This isn’t about having some spectacular story to tell because I think everything about our journey has been spectacular. I’ve always wanted to believe that you’d come back into my life and for seven years I was deathly afraid to but God and fate saw fit to bring you back to me in a manner that I never imagined. It gave us both clarity and allowed us to remedy a situation that honestly never ended, it just stopped. Robyn Rihanna Fenty Brown, I would be honored if you would be my wife again.”
“Oh my god, I need a napkin.”
Chris chuckled as he grabbed some wipes and gingerly wiped her hands, “better?”
“A little. I still think this is a bit unorthodox but...I’m completely ok with it.”
“Anything else you’re completely ok with?”
“I would absolutely love to marry you again.”
Chris grabbed her face and kissed her deeply before hugging her tightly, “I love you.”
“I love you too. Now where’s my ring?”
“I don't have it.”
“How you gonna propose with no ring?”
“I didn’t say I didn’t get a ring. I said I don’t have it, meaning it’s not on my person.”
“So where is it?”
“You got it.”
“How would I have it?”
Chris smirked and Robyn hit his shoulder, “Christopher. Stop playing.”
“I’m not playing. You have your ring.”
“I did pawn our last ring.”
“I know and I wouldn’t use that one even if you did still have it.”
“Chris, where is my ring?”
Chris wiped his hands then walked over to Robyn’s desk and grabbed the new marble art piece that was sitting beside her phone. Robyn’s brow furrowed as Chris brought it over to the coffee table. She became more confused as he turned it upside down and pulled out a silicone plug. He shook it lightly and something wrapped in a white cloth fell into the palm of his hand. He placed the silicone plug back then set the art piece down on the table before turning to face Robyn. He carefully unwrapped the white cloth and a large marquise shaped diamond set into a platinum band that was covered in smaller circular diamonds glistened in his hand.
“Your hand, please?”
Robyn shakingly put out her left hand and Chirs slipped the ring onto her ring finger, “Robyn Fenty Brown, will you marry me?”
She nodded her head as she wiped the tears from falling down her face, “Christopher, it’s so beautiful.”
“I did good, huh?”
“You did but how long was that ring in that piece?”
“Since the day I mailed it to you.”
“So what would’ve happened if you proposed somewhere, not my office?”
“That was never the plan.”
“You planned this? I am not even dressed up or nothing.”
“Because I wanted it to be about us, not fancy dinners and stuff, which there is nothing wrong with, but we’ve also done that already. I thought you would appreciate me not making a huge spectacle of it.”
“I do but I’m also a little caught off-guard.”
“You just knew I was gonna propose in front of the Empire State Building or something with fireworks, huh?”
“I was anticipating it.”
Chris laughed, “are you happy?”
“I am very happy.”
“Good.”
“We’re getting married again?”
“We’re getting married again.”
“EEK!” Robyn squealed as she jumped into his lap and kissed him, “I love you, Christopher.”
“I love you too.”

Starship Rewatch
10 years ago today (well, yesterday since I’m posting it a day later), 15 year old Hope curled up on her couch to watch a new StarKid show called Starship right as it dropped. This was the first time I got to watch a show when it was posted since I didn’t become a StarKid fan until a months earlier. I was so excited.
And now, I’m rewatching Starship for the first time in full in at least 5 years I think. I listened to the soundtrack twice earlier today, singing along at my desk at work (thank god no one else was here tonight to judge me). I still know so many of the lyrics. And so many little jokes and stuff were flooding back. Starship was my favorite StarKid show for a long time, so I’m so excited to watch this again to see if it’s still my fave.
This post ended up being really long, so you’ve been warned. But it also includes pictures of the crocheted Roach and Bugette plushies that I made as a teen.
OH. THE OLD LOGO. AHHH. I already have so many feels. The future is now! I can’t handle this. The nostalgia! The Galactic League of Extraterrestrial Exploration. My facebook account to this day says I am a Starship Ranger at the G.L.E.E. because I’ve never bothered to change it. Also, shoutout to anyone from the StarKidPotter FB and EFST days if you’re reading this. AHHH IT’S CHRIS AND ERIC. Ok I might have to pause 20 thousand times during this Starship Ranger ad to acknowledge all the StarKid cameos. Tyler! “We come to conquer... in peace!” Tyler I love you. Brian and Richard! I forgot they painted Richard BLUE. Britney and Ariel! Nicholas Joseph Stauss-Matathia! I see that StarKid’s website has shortened his name to just Nicholas Strauss but remember the days when we’d purposefully say his full name? Anyway, I literally just screamed “NICK” when I saw him because he was always one of my faves. The Old Snatch was and still is iconic. Devin and Lily! The Wizard God himself, AJ Holmes. God... remember those AJ Holmes appreciation days where we’d make Chuck Norris-like memes about AJ? So much is rushing back from the depths of my mind oh my god... It’s been so long yet it feels like yesterday... “Someone really *static* F- *static* -ucked up big time” Love it.
2 minutes and 22 seconds in. I’ve written so much. I had to pause before Joey started singing to take a moment. I love this show so much. I love these goofballs so much. And they’re all so young. Most of them are younger than I am now. This is insane.
Ok I have to promise myself not to pause as much now. *Spoiler, I failed*
“I’ll fight off this gamma radiation if it’s the last thing I ever do!... We’re going down! This is the last thing I’ll ever do!” Oh my god. Look at baby Joey. He hasn’t even graduated from college yet. And that Bug puppet! Someone remind me to dig up the pictures of my crocheted plushies of Starship puppets since I made Roach and Bugette and gave them to the StarKids at SPACE and Apocalyptour. (I also did Rumbleroar, but the bugs were my own pattern I made so I was more proud) The camera is focused in on Bug instead of Joey’s face. I love it. So much. Brannnttttttt. My god. Am I gonna freak out over every single entrance? Roach pretending to die, he’s the best friend ever. “The needs of the many bugs outweigh the needs of the few bugs.” “Or the one bug, I know.” Oh man, when that line comes back... “Dirt eater” “Exoskeleton polisher” “I wanna build honeycombs” “The bug that ruins your picnic” “A fly on the wall!” That line came back to me earlier today and I died. Remembering that line was like 50% of the reason I listened to the soundtrack today.
Nick Lang! Julia! LAUREN LOPEZ. THERE SHE IS. Lovebugs, I can’t. *Sentimental music* “You could come over to my nest and I could... tear off your head and let my larva devour your body?” How did I forget that line? The way Lauren has to kick Bugette’s larva sack to walk. But the way that it also works so well with the character. I can’t. The Mosquito Brothers!! I forgot they show up so early. “This is our sister, Sweetheart” “...YO.” I CANNOT HANDLE JIM POVOLO. The “zzzz”s like buzzing as backing vocals instead of the usual “ahs” and “oohs.” The things you don’t appreciate until years later. Darren, you genius. That is such a good detail. For a second I couldn’t remember who the Overqueen is played by. 99% sure it’s Jim (It is). Also. Overqueen like ovary... and it looks like a giant vagina. That had to be pointed out to me later. “FLATTERY WILL GET YOU... everywhere.” Why did I forget that line too? “I’m a starship ranger” “Quiet you, you’re drunk” “No I’m drunk!” I remembered that line probably like... 2 minutes earlier when I noticed Joe huddling in the background and realized that line was coming up. The way Joey lets go of the puppet so both he and the puppet walk away with their arms limp... so cute.
Before even pressing play on part 3, I can hear February saying “Let the record show I am super ahead of schedule.” and I’m dying. I forgot about Brian as the escape pod. Denise Donovan! That Star Trek prop. I’m dumb so I can’t remember if it’s a communicator or what. But I know my Uhura Barbie had a mini one that I lost within a month probably. “OxyGen” “Schience” I can’t. “Mission Log... I think I just heard a spooky noise.” How am I forgetting all of these amazing lines? “Pika-pi!” AHHH I JUST SCREAMED. “My stars, I seemed to have landed in a field of these aMiNals!” I can’t. “Can I tell you guys something?” *port de bras and falls gently to the ground* “Hello!” “TOTORO!” I’m dead. The balloon mechanism on the mosquitos! I forgot about that! “HOLY SHIT IT’S A BUUUUGGGGG” Ok something I noticed but didn’t mention earlier. The bug puppet that Joe uses when he says “I had my heart set on nourishment” is the same one red and pink one that Julia used when talking about wanting to be nourishment. When Julia actually gets eaten, she’s using a different bug puppet, the green and pink one, but the same character voice. So, I can’t tell if they intentionally had her play 2 bugs so Joe could be one of them later, or if it was a mistake. I might also just be overthinking things. “ME THINKS IT WENT THAT-A-WAY” I cannot handle Jim Povolo. That scream Joe does as he slimes her. Woah I originally wrote “There seems to be no signs of intelligent lifeforms anywhere” earlier and then deleted it since I don’t know why I found it remarkable. And then looking at the comments of this part I see someone mentioned a Toy Story reference. So that’s why that line stuck out to me. Aww StarKid. There are so many Disney references in this show.
THERE SHE IS. THERE’S MY GIRL TAZ. The pew pew effects how could I forget that!  “Hey Taz. You’re pretty tough for a chick.” “I was just going to say the same thing about you.” “Woahhhhhhhh” JoMo oh my god. “My spectrometer readings are off the wazooooooo” That line kills me. Why am I JUST NOW noticing, 10 years later, that Tootsie enters this scene with his gun facing the wrong way. Oh my god. “I saw the empirical proof that science killed god. It’s comforting to know he was once alive though. I like to think that when he died, he went to heaven.” Oh Tootsie Noodles. “...What the hell kind of name is that?” “He’s got bear hands??” Why do I forget all of these lines??!? That record scratch and freeze frame to go “BOOOOOO” oh my god I forgot that. “Like the other day, he was in the cafeteria, just cah-rying in front of everybody.” BOOOOOOO. Here we go, Taz’s amazing Up monologue. “And when Up, cuts an onion, the ONION is the one who cry.” HELP. Also 99% sure I used that joke for AJ appreciation at least one year. “Now take a walk off my knife” What a line. So awesome. I remember having a profile pic on FB that was the text of that monologue and the image of Lauren screaming “WALK IT OFF” I’m still convinced that first “WOO” from the audience that we hear when Up enters is Darren. “I do not peepee sitting down” “Huh??” JoMo’s face as if he’s trying his hardest not to laugh and I can’t tell if that’s him breaking character or if Krayonder is actually trying not to laugh. “I peepee like big boy, deadgoddamnit. So stop making fun of me because it hurts my feelings” I’m dying. Also, deadgoddamnit is amazing. “if you don’t go out there and die for something, then I will kill you for nothing.” I remembered the mirror scene, just seconds before it started and already started laughing. “You’re not a failure, overall.” “Allow me to introduce you to the final member of your team. MegaGirl!” I forgot how DRAMATIC that was. I also forgot that’s how MegaGirl comes into the story.
I need to stop pausing every 5 seconds oh my god I’ll never finish this tonight if I don’t.
“All hail AstroBoy” That was the funniest line. “MegaGirl, can you kill humans?” “No. But I’d like to.” I can’t handle it. “A horse ate my cousin! Me and horses got a feud.” #1 MegaGirl doing the “I’m watching you” hand sign. I can’t. “Hey. Miráme. *Slaps* NOW ESCHUCHAME” amazing. “Or that time. You taught me calculus... CALCULUS WAS TOUGH.” I never went past pre-calc. Nope. Ah. Get Back Up. One of my fave songs. “And now we dance.” Dylan’s “OW” as they lean back. “Ok Idiotas. Say something nice. Or I will kill you.” It’s all so iconic.
“So you still think being an egg planter is lame?” “...Yes.”  The larva oh my god. I forgot we see one before the end. That’s Jaime playing the larva I think. Life is definitely one of my all-time favorite StarKid songs to this day. I wish it was longer. I love it so much. And I love that its instrumental is scattered as a motif throughout the show. “It’s a short, small thing we lead. With so much potential, pointless or essential, which one can I be?” Wow. Near Pippin levels of giving me an existential crisis. Also wow Joey improved his singing so much between AVPS and Starship. “My name’s Bug” “*Gasp!* Like a bug??” “Uh... no.” “Good. I’m February, like the month, but a person.” I should start saying that honestly. “I’m Hope, like the concept, but a person.” “You boldly go where every man -hey- woman -bark woof- or data dog has ever gone before! Sorry K9DX” Adorable. Joey’s subtle little double nod he makes the Bug puppet do when he’s shocked she thinks he’s a Starship Ranger. Amazing. Ah he said goddamn not deadgoddamn! February should have known right then he wasn’t human! “Take my claw” that too. "The only thing that needs to rest are your jokes, because they are so tired.” “Woahhhhhh” No but like... why don’t I use that line in everyday life... “Now I am slightly less weak.” “Ok. I’m going to shoot this metal bitch!” I’m dying. How did I forget the Taz/MegaGirl rivalry?? “That thing is a R-O-B-O-T man” “Can’t fool me with numbers, Krayonder.” I’m dead. “The stack of hay was my cousin!” #2 The way Meredith says “barometric pressure” is great. And Tootsie saying “Well you must take real good care of it, because I never would have guessed.” He’s such a sweetheart. “Nobody shoot dammit, nobody shoot.” “KILL KILL KILL” I never really liked Hideous Creatures but it’s so cute to see MegaGirl do the choreo robotically. I love that the Gap hasn’t changed. “Cool it skank, you do not know me.” Another line that I forgot until a split second before it was said. I’m so glad whoever edited this added some pews going in the wrong way for Tootsie’s gun. I know I definitely noticed Tootsie’s gun was backwards during this part, but I don’t know if I noticed it was backwards in that very first scene too. I forgot about MegaGirl tossing out Specs. That “MEGAGIRL!!!” scream from Joe though.
“Never in my 6 long days of life.” Underappreciated joke. Also, I think this is the 4th unique upright bug puppet. We got red/pink, green/blue, green/pink, and now red/blue. Also, Nick Lang is a great puppeteer. “Yes, I helped her escape. But I swear, never in a million years, did I think I’d be caught and yelled at for it!”  Oh I forgot Bugette is the witness. Jaime’s angry face behind Joey is killing me. “He didn’t know the humans were evil.” “Oh, they’re not.” “Shut up!” Humoons and hoomans. “And no more singing or dancing” *gasps of horror* “The Overqueen has overspoken.” “Well, that’s not gonna help your chances with Bugette” Oh Roach. “PERHAPS.” Jim destroys me.
God the 4-person Pincer puppet. Amazing. Dylan’s arms being strong enough to be above his head for 10 minutes straight. Amazing. Also, Nick Lang is so emotive as a claw. It took me a sec but yeah JoMo is the tail. “There were? Where are they?” Joey’s face. “Tell me all about her” The claws under the chin I can’t. Hey StarKid, I see you throwing in an ad mid-video before Kick It Up a Notch. You’re lucky I love and support you guys. “Put ‘em together and what have you got?” bibbity boppity boo. More Disney references! This scene is full of them. Man, remember when we were all blown away by Dylan’s voice in this song the first time? Like we could tell he could sing in AVPM/S, but his songs were just so jokey and only his long “Welcooooooooooome” showed us his talent. But then Kick It Up a Notch happened. And we FINALLY appreciated Dylan’s beautiful voice. “I pushed it to the limit.” and “To coin a phrase, be a man.” more Disney. I might be overthinking this and will have to rewatch Life to confirm, but I think the camera zooming out as Pincer reprises Life is just like the camerawork when Bug sang it originally. If so, then wow even when filming their shows StarKid really thinks it all through. (Update: It totally is referencing the original zooms for Life and that’s amazing. Except it’s zooming out instead of in. I LOVE the attention to detail even in filming the show. I’m gonna guess that’s Liam’s doing.) All I can see when I hear Bug’s chorus of this song is Jaime and her SPACE tour dancing, which they incorporated in Apocalyptour as actual choreography. Because they’re goofballs. The kick line. Love it. God. Even though it’s not my favorite song from Starship (just because I love Life and Beauty more), Kick It Up A Notch is one of the best StarKid has ever done. I really has everything. Dylan’s gorgeous voice. Not one but two reprises of earlier songs to throw Bug’s own words back at him. Jim’s bass line. Awesome puppets. Disney references. It’s so amazing. I love how all the comments are either about Dylan’s voice or Dylan’s ability to hold his arms up for a 10+ minute scene or both.
"Gameover man, gameover!” “I feel like cutting open your belly, and filling it with jelly” *Gasps* Oh my god, I put on the captions for a second, and  the caption said *Sad spayed puppy noises* “I am in charge of this mission now.” How did I forget about the mustache until 2 seconds before it happened? “She’s got the mustache now. *Kisses head* I love you” Oh my god Tootsie. I FORGOT ABOUT THE SECOND STACHE. There’s an ad right when we see Bug’s human form and I can’t even care because look at him! Ahhh. And the blue headband! Ahhhhh. Joey you’re so adorableeeee. “Bug? Well that’s a fine name.” His concerned face then the relief. Adorable. “Thank you sir. I am a tough bitch.” “Getting nothing but bug muff?!?” I love the slight delay the audience has before laughing as they realize what was just said. “Bug. You hard, ese. You flame.” I die. “Up there. In Space!” *dramatic pointing* No I totally didn’t just do the dramatic pointing with them... no that’s not in my muscle memory from 10 years ago... why would you think that. I’ll rave about Status Quo after it’s done. “But, what if I miss you?” Awwwwwwwww. And that “Just look up.” screenshot was used for “This.” memes in the fandom for years.
Oh Joey. Status Quo is such a good song too. And he really did improve as a singer to sing it. Earlier this week I remembered that this week is also the 10th anniversary of that time Darren was hopping from city to city every single day to promote the Warblers album. And at one point in that week he did a livestream that I remember rushing home to watch. In that livestream, I am 99% sure he sang Status Quo as a little sneak preview for Starship being released later that week. (Just checked, yep he sang it in a livestream on April 20 2011) God I love this song. Then the version the boys all sang for SPACE Tour was beyond beautiful too. Ahhh I love this musical.
Ok. It’s almost midnight. I started this 3 hours ago. I’m probably not finishing the show until 2am at the rate that I’m pausing and stopping to comment. But OH WELL.
“Dr. Spaceclaw” wow. “Leaving them behind was of little consequence, but a pleasure.” Oh Megagirl. “You did a very good job today too, son.” “*Gasp* Thanks dad.” That Star Wars fake-out though. Speaking of Star Wars, I really need to rewatch Ani now that I’m actively a Star Wars fan unlike last time when I still wasn’t invested in the movies I just watched them. How did I forget about Jaime playing Junior’s new mom?? ...Does Junior get an alien incubating in his chest... is that foreshadowing... I can’t remember. (This was like... half a foreshadow) This scene is funnier now that Breredith is married. The way Junior says “Phew” I’m dead. I remembered how they restrain MegaGirl once again 2 seconds before it happened oh my god. “We deserve bubbles on our skin.” An iconic line. “Well thank the long dead god you made it, Bug!”  The crunching of the handshake, I can’t. Oh someone in the comments pointed out that Bug and February are doing the Tarzan hand thing while Up’s asking Taz to see a movie. Adorable.
Get yourself a man like Tootsie who won’t stand for you talking down about yourself. “Maybe this was all part of God’s plan. He made before he died.” I love the dead god jokes. I remember years ago some kid on facebook was like “The dead god jokes are offensive” and I was like “It’s a sci-fi musical about a bug in a human body but sure worry about god being dead.” but probably in an even more immature answer. I’m just mesmerized by Tootsie and MegaGirl’s verses. God. The first Dylan and Meredith duet. Amazing. And MegaGirl’s confused face is great. “Don’t press that button, or we’ll all be sucked into space.” So... Can anyone tell me what foreshadowing is? Oh shoot... ok wait no I’ll comment on that when we get there. God that is such a cute love song. I wrote barely anything just because I love that song so much. Would love to know where Tootsie’s taking her though.
Oh my god this scene! I forgot about this. How could I forget this. “Well the world always looks a little bit brighter, from on top of a lap.” I had remembered Bug sitting on Up’s lap, but not Specs. This is the part I forgot. Adorable. Ahhhh so cute. The Specs/Krayonder relationship was apparently cut from the filmed version, but was present if you saw it live. These moments are adorable. And I love how this is the second person JoMo’s had to carry in this show since he also carried Denise earlier. “Why if it isn’t Bug, my oldest friend.” and “Don’t say that, my dear.” are adorable. Oh wait. Up sat on Bug’s lap. Not the other way around. Ok. I didn’t remember this scene as well as I thought I did. I’m dying. I didn’t want to write anything during this, but oh my god “That son of a bitch Optimus Prime” I forgot that. I love the audience’s reaction to “The entire right side of my body, it’s a robot” because they all gasp, and then laugh at themselves for gasping. I knew there was something he couldn’t do without crying. I didn’t remember it being “Sir I Wanna Buy These Shoes” Christmas Song. It’s ok Up, I haven’t listened to that song in full in years. I can’t handle it. But Christmas songs in general make me cry too. Oh Up said goddamn instead of deadgoddamn too. Hmm... Aww the mother spider story. “I think the old you was just killing out of hate.” “Oh I was.” I’m dying. Awwww the nose kiss. I definitely remembered that. “Deadgodspeed soldier!” The way Joey misses catching the keys and also Darren’s “Woo!” in the audience again. So great. That 12 minute scene is just adorable and the Up story is so dramatic and hilarious.
Hmm finishing before 2am might be ambitious... “Hahaha. Then I’ll shoot him!” “Taking care of my business down on the planet is that cool with you?” Brian’s delivery of that line has always intrigued me. “How much I care about my MegaGirl unit’s survival is also a percent equivalent to zero” Rude. “You are nothing like my boyfriend, Tootsie Noodles.” “Yes, well - wait WHAAA” This scene is so different now that they’re married. “Ha. Ha. It was cute.” “You’re... a toaster.” *Slaps* Ok 1) I used to use that insult all the time and only half ironically. I was a strange teenager. 2) She just hurt a human... isn’t that against programming, or can she just not kill humans? Evil angry Brolden is something we need more of. I love Brian as a villain. More please. “You stupid goddamn robot” So I guess they say goddamn and deadgoddamnit. I’m overthinking the evolution of language in this universe. Also Brian’s screams while being choked are amazing. I’ve never forgotten those, if anything they’re better now.
AHHHH I REFRESHED AND DELETED ALL OF MY STUFF FOR BEAUTY. Kill me. I’m so mad. Let me try to recreate it but I hate myself. I was saving this draft after every part but OF COURSE I don’t save after my favorite song and then refresh.
Oh poor Meredith. Her white wig doesn’t let her blend in as much when she’s in the hoodies playing a bug. “Oh hey Bugette, we’re just trying to get Bug laid!” That bug had to know about Bugette’s crush though? That’s just cruel. “The ending is killer” ruuuuuuddddddddddeee. I know I had at least one more point, but that’s lost to the ether. Beauty is probably my fave, if not tied with Life. When I was listening to it earlier, I was overcome with emotion because it’s just such a joyful song. These days I cry over happy stuff almost as much as I cry over the sad. And these lines just hit so hard... I love it. I love this song so much and this scene so much. “Bug. She excreted her filth for you. WE DID IT!!!!!!!!” Brant Cox is so good. It really is a shame he’s not in anything else besides AVPSY and the 10th Anniversary with everyone else. “I do accept you for who you really are. A genius.” Well February, you’ll be glad to know that you thought of that, so you’re the genius. Wow. Junior’s 25, Brian was 25, and now I’m 25. This really was perfect timing for the 10th anniversary. Also I do not feel 25. “Suck off!” amazing.
I’M SAVING THIS TIME.
Ok next part. Luckily I was only 1 minute into the next part when I refreshed. Still so mad at myself... “Someone really firetrucked up big time” (Dead)God I love that line. I also used firetruck unironically. Once again, I was a strange teenager and I didn’t like cursing and I still don’t. “This is so weird, I’m so used to the scrambly version.” (It was while writing this line the first time that I refreshed and lost Beauty....) Ok as I watch AJ, it’s hitting me that he almost definitely came to the set during rehearsals and filmed his part since it’s not a green screen like the rest of them. “The hunters have become the hunted, and it’s wabbit season.” “That was a good video, until the end when it got sad.” Thanks Bug. “I think, I just had a think” See February’s smart. “I’m in a weird situation” Love that line. “Bug is a BUG!? I DON’T BELIEVE IT” Oh Junior. Dylan’s insulted face at “I am not... a dumbass.”  So I can’t tell if Brian forgets he’s trapped when he moves his arms into a more relaxed position to lean on the column and then puts them back, or if it’s purposefully staged that way. Brian’s acting while he pretends to be shy and embarrassed about his evil plan is amazing and adorable. Brian has a good evil laugh, why don’t we get him as a villain more often? Also I was gonna make some sort of joke about Nick as Pincer’s left claw vs. Robert as Snarl’s left paw, but I’ll leave it be.
I FORGOT ABOUT THAT WEIGHT TAZ WAS LIFTING JUST FLOATING UP TO THE SKY WHEN SHE LETS GO. I just laughed out loud. “Damn that G.L.E.E. They’re always making twisted abominations of everything!!” I cannot handle it. And the wink. Poor Darren but also not poor Darren at all. I was just now WRACKING my mind for who could possibly be playing Pincer’s tail if JoMo was being devoured by mosquitos. It’s Brant. Literally the entire cast is currently onstage. Ok Krayonder’s been getting his blood drained for 3 minutes, why is he alive? OH I FORGOT KRAYONDER GETS UP AND SHOOTS THE BUGS. Ok and he gets chopped by Pincer’s claws too so HOW does he survive? StarKid answer!!! I forgot how dramatic this musical gets when you got both the bugs and MegaGirl coming after the humans. Aww the Vulcan salute from Specs. “I changed my name. To Tootsie... MegaGirl.” I love the reactions of the people in the audience who immediately realize what that means. I hear at least one “oh my god” that sounds like sobbing. Awwwww Tootsie’s “that’s real” speech and “I’d love you if you was the horse that ate my cousin.” (#3) just... get yourself a man like Tootsie MegaGirl. He is perfection. God the downloading love scene is so cute. I can’t handle it.
The Up saving Taz scene is so dramatic. Then Brian and Jim just calmly walk offstage. It kills me. Also why did Jaime just continue to lie there? “I just needed to learn how to kill with my heart.” Not exactly what Bug meant, but it works. God Taz climbing onto Up’s back is still the most hilarious thing ever. Whoever thought of her climbing that way was a genius. So funny. I always wanted to try it. Holding the gun up to her head like a blowdryer always gave me anxiety. Making the door out of a scrim that can be backlit was genius. Oof and bringing back “The needs of the many bugs outweigh the needs of the few bugs. Or the one bug.” just hurts. Poor Bug. My heart. This is probably the line that sticks with me to this day and I do think about sometimes.
Ok it’s now 2am and I still have 2 more parts.
I sorta love that Joey didn’t have the time to change into his blacks so he’s still in the Starship Ranger suit while playing the Bug puppet. “Save the Overqueen. I love her.” Awww. “Roach, I’m gonna get the job done if it’s the second last thing I do.” Love it. That Kick It Up A Notch Reprise though. Brian, you should play villains more often. Also remember all of us being like “LUPIN CAN SING?!?!?!??!!” “Lucky for me, God is dead. When you see him in hell, tell him Junior sent you.” Deadgod I love that line. This whole deadgod thing was just leading up to that amazing line. Oh no Bugette! Bug saying “maestro” oh my god. “DFSDSJFDSJKFDS... I’m dead.” I forgot that part! Oh my god the way Brian flicks the glasses back down on his face. Ok so I saw Lauren wiggle her way behind the mucus sac, but I didn’t see Nick come onstage. I rewinded, and I guess the zoom in shots on Brian and Joey were timed so we can’t see Nick join Lauren to be the first larva to come out. Oh well. And I love the crowd cheering as Junior dies. “And bingo was his name-o” That callback though. I forgot that the Overqueen eats Bugette’s body while crying. “Or Bugette! Oh...” Also god Roach is adorable.
Last part. 2:21am. Here we go. Krayonder got his blood sucked out by giant mosquitos and was cut up by a giant scorpion, but all he needs is a bandage around his head. Awwww the soft “I Wanna Be” playing the background as Bug begs the team to accept his bug form. Bug being so mad “It’s that bastard Pincer isn’t it?” and then being so happy that Joey does the little nose scrunch thing. So cute. JOEY’S FACE WHEN DENISE KISSES THE BUG PUPPET. Cannot believe I forgot that until 2 seconds before it happened too. “I now pronounce you man vs. machine. Fight!” WOAH. Why in the WORLD did “eep op ork ahah” come back to me. I was able to say it WITH Joey. That was straight from the DEPTHS of my teenage brain oh my god. I forgot about that oh my GOD. THAT’S INSANE. I FORGOT SO MUCH STUFF BUT I REMEMBERED HOW TO SAY “I LOVE YOU” IN BUG.
And the Beauty reprise.
God I love this musical. It’s still my fave StarKid show I think. And I’m horrified to see that it has only 500K views for the last part, so only 500K people have watched it all the way through after 10 years. That’s disgraceful. It’s amazing. Watch Starship.
It is 2:32am. I started at 8:50pm. Got sidetracked when I had to rewatch the Beauty part of Act 2 again to make sure I got my notes back in the post. Took a few bathroom breaks. But this is mostly because I paused every like 10 seconds to make a comment, so it took 5 and a half hours to watch a 3 hour musical. This why I take forever to watch things while liveblogging. I take too long to writing notes.
I’ll probably just post this in the morning. Gotta proofread for mistakes before posting.
Ok it’s the next afternoon. This post is literally 5,000+ words and takes 20 minutes to read according to a online word counter. I’m sorry to whoever read this entire thing. Your reward is the pictures of the Starship plushies I crocheted when I was 15 and 16.

(Ignore the bad lighting and my horribly chipped paint. That’s the only picture I have of the Bugette one since I gave it to Lauren Lopez a day later. I started making another for myself shortly after but never finished. Maybe I should finally finish the second one... hmm...)

CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
The night shifts weren’t all bad. From time to time, they were even as good as “pretty straight forward”. They proved especially useful when trying to finish patient notes and random admin that always got left to the very end of the shift. Perhaps they’d endure a tidy-out of the stock cupboards if the crew was feeling generous. Since O’Brien had taken up his post at the hospital years earlier, he had insisted upon mandatory training updates for the ER units every three to four months (the national average was about once a year) so the team were regularly reminded not to set fire to their computers and not to leave boxes in places people could trip over. You’d be surprised how often both those things happened in an emerging crisis.
“I swear he thinks we’re idiots half the time.” Complained Jack, his head now glued to the palm of his hand. Jack was hurtling towards an early retirement thanks to an ever-increasing distrust of the corporate environment ER departments found themselves in. We trained to save lives, he’d say, not file stat reports. He was so right, it hurt.
The crew was sat round the reception desk. The ER was empty except for a local homeless man the team allowed in from time to time to sleep off his latest drunken adventures.
“Who doesn’t know how to bend their knees when lifting something heavy?” Jack asked again.
“Ryan for one.” Sarah joked, pointing her cold cup of tea towards the fellow nurse in question. Ryan was a tall and skinny guy, not dissimilar to Alexander Skarsgard in the right light but with less charm although he had left a few of the interns swooning of late. Shanna quite liked him, too.
“One time, Sarah. One time and I suffered for it greatly.” Ryan remarked, spinning a full 360 in his swivel chair. “Did you tick ‘agree’ or ‘strongly agree’ for question eleven?”
“Oh, if you don’t tick ‘strongly agree’ even if you only ‘agree’, they mark you down a couple of percentage points.” Entered Audrey, slamming down a pile of files on the desk beside Sarah. Their nightly routine just got more interesting. “Just get it over with. It’s not worth the effort. It’s just O’Brien being obsessed with stats again. He turns everything into a competition. I swear it’s unhealthy.”
Ryan looked momentarily confused before returning to face his computer screen. He re-read the question for the fifth time and rubbed his eyes in resignation. Something about 3am made this far too complicated.
“When did you even find time to do this, Aud?” Jack asked, turning back to Sarah and Audrey in time to witness their shared look self-satisfaction. “I’ve been sat here for half an hour and am still only part way through the first section.”
“I logged in at home earlier.” she responded before catching Sarah’s quizzical look. “Well, Michael did most of it for me.”
“Fucking hell!” exclaimed Jack, chucking his pen on the table, giving up. “Got no chance then, have I? Michael’s a bloody genius. Hey, how much for him to do mine?”
“Normally I’d say $100 but he’s pretty cheap these days.” shrugged Audrey. “Probably a fancy cigar would do.”
“He still grumpy about the you-know-what?” whispered Sarah to her friend when the guys started joshing between themselves.
Audrey leaned back on the desk beside her and took the mug from Sarah’s hands to take a sip, grimacing slightly at the sweetness. For some reason, Sarah had to have at least three sugars in her tea if she was drinking it post-midnight. It helped to keep her more alert apparently. She didn’t drink it like that at any other time of the day. “No more than usual. Seems like we’re both unlucky in that department at the moment.”
Sarah smiled at her in acknowledgement, lips thin before biting the inside of her cheek.
Following their last meet-up, Chris had been decidedly quiet. Too quiet almost. It was weird. He hadn’t messaged her. He hadn’t called or visited their apartment except to collect a parcel he had left. Sarah has been out for a run at the time and had felt silently glad to have missed him. He hadn’t updated his twitter and there had been multiple sports events occurring that would have guaranteed a humblebrag or five. Shanna had pledged to buy rib-eye steaks for a Saturday night meal during a Celtics game and he had cancelled at the last minute citing an interview he had conveniently forgotten. Even Audrey thought it was weird. If anything was guaranteed to get his attention and bring him out of whatever funk he was in, it was the promise of sports and a ‘Grade A’ barbeque.
Shanna merely put it down to his laziness or him having something better turn up. Scott had started replacing Chris around their apartment, wanting to get some of his own distance from the tricky Zach situation and it helped her feel better knowing he was at least in touch with him if Shanna wasn’t. He was evidently still alive.
Sarah decided to swap a couple of daytime stints to partner up with Audrey for the nights. She needed the comfort of working with a good friend to calm her down from whatever ledge her anxiety had placed her on.
“You know that he’ll come back, right?” Audrey interrupted her thoughts. Maybe Sarah spoke too soon. “Haven’t you got that birthday thing for Lisa coming up?”
That trip was a couple of weeks away yet. She was trying to bank some reasonable excuses but everything sounded lame in the cold light of day and Lisa was never going to accept her not coming as well. Surely things would have smoothed themselves out by then?
“This won’t just fix itself, hun, you’ll need to speak to him eventually. And the sooner the better.”
It was like Audrey had a hotline straight into Sarah’s psyche. It was unnerving at the best of times. Sarah knew she was right of course. It’s just, a little bit of distance would be a good thing, right? Even Chris himself had offered that advice from time to time, and stressing herself out at this point almost seemed counterintuitive.
“I reckon you could go in an hour or so if you wanted.” Audrey offered, nudging her friend with her elbow to bring her back into the room. “It’s dead out there.”
“I hope not.” Sarah joked, trying to lighten the mood. “We’d be shit at our jobs if that was the case.”
Audrey laughed for the first time since Sarah could remember that day. It was moments like this that reminded her of why she enjoyed working alongside her so much, and why she didn’t mind if it resulted in overtime.
“You wanna take patient referrals while I take the EPRs?”
“How can I refuse an offer like that?” Sarah picked up the dozen or so documents sat in front of her and grabbed the nearest chair. Audrey told her she’d put the kettle on and nudged the guys still glued to their screens. Ryan had pretty much given up logical thinking and was now ticking random boxes. Jack was cursing under his breath. O’Brien was going to be in for a real treat when he could finally tabulate the responses.
It was nearing 6.20am when Sarah and Audrey finally packed up to go. Matt and Stephanie had just arrived to take over for the morning, bringing a fresh perspective for the day. There wasn’t much for them to catch up on so it should be a smooth few hours at least. Sarah even ran a mop through the staff locker room as an added gift – Steph was a notorious clean freak – nearly tripping Greg up in the process.
He’d been on leave for the past fortnight and his hair was a little longer than she remembered. A five o’clock shadow graced the lower part of his face and it suited him more than she thought it would. He had kept up with the informal tie-less attire and he seemed to be, dare she it, enjoying himself.
“God, I’m so sorry.” She held her hands up in a mock mea culpa. “I was just gonna put it away before heading out. It was a stupid place to leave it.”
“Did you not take the Health and Safety refresher?” he joked, rebalancing himself and trying to play down the redness creeping into his cheeks from the embarrassment of temporarily losing his footing in front of her.
“You gonna rat me out to O’Brien? ‘Cos you know as well as I do that he doesn’t need yet another reason to know he’s right.” She shifted the mop and bucket and placed them back in the supply closet before reaching for her bag again.
“Nah, don’t worry about it.” He moved passed her before turning to face her again. “Tell you the truth, I ghosted the last couple of tabs myself. Who knew there were so many ways to ask questions about standing in elevators?”
Sarah rolled her eyes in acknowledgement. “Yeh. I can’t wait to have the team meeting when he realises we’ve all pretty much done the same thing. That’s gonna be fun. I might finally take some of my holiday.”
“Yeh, good plan. Hey listen,” His words stopped her in her tracks, feet from the exit. “Um, I know it’s been a while but I was wondering if you might want to reschedule that tennis match some time? Or if not, we could get some dinner or something? There’s that new sushi place on Reagan Street. It’s meant to be really good if you fancy it?”
She was indeed familiar with that very restaurant thanks to the glowing reviews she had been unable to avoid since it opened. Audrey had only mentioned it a mere thousand times in her presence. Word was that bookings were now months in advance so she wasn’t sure how Greg was hoping to find a table unless he wanted to make plans with her in November. Given the number of commitments he always appeared to have going on, it wouldn’t be completely outside the realm of possibility.
“Wow, I thought that place was fully booked?”
“Yeh, it is, but I went to college with one of the investors and he’s promised me a one-off.”
Of course he did. Sarah bit her bottom lip to stop herself from chuckling out loud, imagining Audrey’s face when she would inevitably find out. To be honest, she was genuinely surprised he was still showing a minor interest in her. When she finally made eye contact with him, his earnestness was practically shining. Had he always had perfect skin?
“Um…” That was a good start, she thought.
“Honestly, it’s not a big deal if you’d rather not.” He helpfully pre-empted her awkward rejection but she wasn’t sure if that was a good thing. “I’ve been meaning to go is all and I knew you liked sushi and figured it might be fun? They have live Jazz on Sunday nights.”
When did he find out she liked sushi? And live Jazz? Just how much had Audrey told him about her?
Realising she probably looked perplexed, she shuffled her shoulder strap back up onto her shoulder and tried to relax the awkwardness setting in between them. It was still quiet and no one was within earshot that she could figure out of her peripheral vision.
“It’s not you, Greg, I promise. It’s just, I’m not really looking to get into anything right now. With anyone. Plus, we work together and…I’m sorry. I hope that’s OK?”
“Hey, look, I promise it won’t be awkward. There’s absolutely no expectations from me and if you change your mind, just let me know, yeh? I literally know no one else who likes Sashimi so I can’t waste my only chance to get a table.” He chuckled and she felt more at ease.
“If it’s any consolation, I’m a pretty crap date.” She smiled at him as she edged herself down the hall, putting space between them both literally and figuratively. “You wouldn’t be missing out.”
“Oh, I doubt that somehow.” He returned her smile. “I’m serious, though. Just let me know. Anytime. No expiration date.”
And with that, she had been left dumbfounded by two men in the space of a single week.
It would have been easier to get the early morning bus home at this time, as tired as she was starting to feel. She hadn’t slept well in the last few days and she had a creeping nausea from the lack of proper rest. The walk and crisp, fresh air might do her some good. It was practically full daylight even at this hour, and it was sometimes fun to watch people on their own way to work, huffing along, trying not to drop their coffees.
The out-of-town school bus passed her a few minutes out from her apartment and as she rounded the corner, she got this weird sense that someone was watching her. Another corner turned and she could see her building in the near distance. Still, she couldn’t shake it. She stopped, pretending to fumble for her phone in her pocket and turned around swiftly to see a sweaty Chris stop a few steps behind her.
It took her a moment to register it was in fact him, his beard fuller and a Red Sox cap pulled down low over his eyes. He had sweats and sneakers on and looked like he was on a run. Honestly, if someone else had spotted him from this distance, they would have worried he was going to attack her.
“Hey,” she said, turning to fully face him. “What are you doing out at this time?”
He didn’t respond at first. He shuffled from one foot to the other before grounding himself and taking a couple of steps towards her. Again, he shuffled back a step like he was rethinking his move. She didn’t appreciate seeing him like this, so unsure of himself.
“Five months out from filming some pre-shoots so figured I’d make a start.” He finally spoke. Not a really a smile but he at least sounded OK.
“Cool.” She said, nodding back at him. “Um, I’m not sure if Shanna is awake yet but do you want to come inside for some water or coffee?”
“Yeh, that’d be great. Thanks.”
She turned to continue walking on. For a few long moments, he stayed walking slightly behind her. A couple more strides and he had decided to catch up. The last time it had taken this long to walk this same street, she had been so drunk she had narrowly avoided falling into her neighbour’s front garden.
“Five months? You’re not that out of shape.” She tried to make a joke. It was the only thing she could think of. Audrey would be eye-rolling like a champ if she could see them now.
Chris knew she was trying to make small talk now so he decided to indulge her. It was a fair response, he thought - he was doing OK - as he followed her up the stairs deliberately keeping two or three behind her in an effort to keep it casual.
“Oh, y’know. I fluctuate pretty easily. A few pizzas here and there and it’s game over.”
They walked into her kitchen and she had been right in assuming Shanna was still asleep. Unless she had awoken really early but that was highly unlikely, unless there was a sale at Ted Baker she didn’t know about.
He lingered in the doorway while she searched the fridge for a bottle of water. Grabbing one from the back, she turned to hand it to him expecting him to be within an arm’s reach from her but he had been distracted by something down the hall before turning back to her. Gratefully, he accepted it and walked into the kitchen to take up his usual spot leaning against the counter.
“Sorry, did you say you wanted a coffee?” She offered.
“Nah, I’m good. Can’t really take caffeine until this afternoon.”
“Sorry. I always forget how strict it is.” She apologised, offering him a sympathetic smile.
He took a long swig from the bottle, not breaking eye contact from her. “No need to apologise. You OK? Night shift?”
“Yeh. Pretty quiet, thankfully.”
“I’ve always meant to ask but what is it like, a night shift? I can’t work out if it would be worse or not.”
She understood what he meant and laughed. “It can go either way to be honest but it’s been quiet the last few nights. Nothing crazy. I caught up with some paperwork, so…” She shrugged again, acutely aware of how boring she must sound.
He nodded at her. “Aren’t people supposed to be crazier in the summertime?”
“Well, kids are around more and families tend to spend more time together, so…”
The apartment was unnervingly quiet now which was weird. She could hear the uptake in traffic outside which provided some relief that perhaps he couldn’t hear her heart beating out of her chest. She could make out some small sweat patches on his hoodie and it did something to her that she wasn’t expecting. Shaking the thought from her head, she turned to switch the kettle off.
“What?” He asked.
She jerked her head back around to face him. “Huh?”
“You were thinking of something. Your neck just went red.” He smiled, tilting his head at her and relishing the look of surprise making its way over her features, knowing he’d caught her out.
That was news to her. She knew she had “tells” but a red neck was not usually one of them. How come no one had ever told her about this?
“I can’t tell if you’re joking with me or not.” She inquired, playfully narrowing her eyes at him in an effort to lighten the mood.
He shrugged a shoulder at her, a smirk starting to cross his fine features. Joshing with her was good. She’d take that. A small step in the right direction.
“Sometimes, it’s really obvious. You get it when you’re embarrassed about something, or when you try to lie. I’d never really noticed it before, but...” He paused. His expression started to turn more thoughtful and she wished he’d just continue to make fun of her instead.
“Guess I won’t be playing poker anytime soon.” She finished the thought for him.
“Yeh, no, you’d be rubbish at that. Just terrible.” He took another swig from his bottle and waited for her to throw something at him.
“Thanks.”
“You’re welcome.”
The room went quiet again. She stirred her mug of coffee and offered him another chance at one which he politely refused although his discipline was waning slightly now he could smell it.
“So this is fine.” He said after a couple of minutes, nodding in a slightly exaggerated manner. He looked out of the kitchen window. “We can do this, right? No awkwardness. No embarrassment. Just normal, everyday conversation.”
“’Course,” she nodded in agreement.
“Start as we mean to go on, right?”
She nodded again. This felt like a trap and she couldn’t put her finger on why. Chris had a knack for saying and doing two different things at the same time, an intimidating ability that often put people on edge if he thought it would serve his purpose, whatever that may be. Probably the actor in him. When you called him out, he would aggressively defend himself which only served to prove the point you were making in the first place.
Scott was the only one, truly, who knew when it was happening. It had taken Sarah years to get to a similar position but now, she wasn’t sure she was remotely close to it.
“It’s as good a starting point as any, I guess.” She shrugged again, sipping from her cup.
“So there’s no need to ignore me then.”
“I haven’t been ignoring you, have I?”
“You tell me. I’m just pre-empting it is all. I’m just saying we can still interact, you and me, if we need to. Like, it doesn’t always have to be in social settings with other people around.” He took a final drink from his bottle and turned to locate the recycling pot stashed away in the corner. Even with a mundane task, he always looked cool doing it.
“So don’t worry about it.”
“Alright then. That’s good to know.” She shot him a raised eyebrow which he caught and returned with a sly smirk. “I’m just trying to be sensible. We have to get this right or else there’s no point.”
“I know, I get that, too.” If he wasn’t attempting to be serious before, he was now. He had a hand on his hip and seemed to have grown a few inches in height. “What do you think I’m trying to say?”
“I…think I’m on the backfoot again and it’s weird.” She held a hand up in defence.
“Hey, I’m just doing what we agreed, OK? I’m just following your rules.”
“They’re not rules.” She struggled to regulate the volume in her voice in case she disturbed Shanna. “And you’re making it sound like I’m controlling the situation when I’m not. We both agreed on this. There’s no point being difficult about it.”
Was he being difficult? Yes. Obviously, he was. He wasn’t happy. He wasn’t sure what he was feeling but happy definitely wasn’t it. Things were out of sorts and he hadn’t been able to eat carbs or sugar for four days so the withdrawal symptoms certainly weren’t helping. He should go easier on her. She was doing the thinking for the both of them. He should learn to be more grateful for that.
He scratched the back of his head and let out an audible sigh in frustration. “I’ll try harder, I promise. We’ve got that cabin thing coming up with Mom, so…I promise I’ll be good.”
He imitated the scout salute and she smiled at him, a smile not quite reaching her eyes.
Another night shift and Audrey and was starting to get suspicious. No one willingly switched for a night shift. For one thing, there was a disproportionate amount of recovery time. A couple of night shifts often took in excess of a week to recover from; a week that a nurse definitely did not have to spare.
“He been buggin’ you?” she asked, finally growing tired of the silence.
“Who?” Sarah looked up from the cabinet. “No, not really. We haven’t really spoken.”
“So why are you ignoring him?”
“I’m not ignoring him! Why does everyone think that?”
“Who’s everyone?”
Crap. Audrey had her there. Sarah open and closed her mouth without a sound coming out. She took a breath. “He’s not bugging me. He’s not. I’m just trying to limit the times we’re in the same place at the same time.”
“Huh, you’d think he would at least allow you to have peace in your own home.”
“Well, to be fair, he hasn’t been around all that much, but…at least I don’t have to worry about him showing up unannounced. It’s stupid but I feel way more awkward about him than I thought I would. It’s like I can’t even stand to be under his gaze.”
Audrey glanced at her friend, wishing she could offer some words of comfort. Even for someone as verbose as she normally was, she was finding it a struggle. Sarah wasn’t much looking for words of comfort at the given time either. She was all too aware of the predicament she was in and how much responsibility laid at her feet. In her mind, waiting it out was the only logical solution she could come up with. The only logical solution that didn’t require more conversations with someone who could feasibly run rings around her “theory” that if they just stayed apart for a little while, they would suddenly and magically forget about the past couple of months.
They stayed filing documents in silence again, the air seemingly getting thicker.
“You ever spoken with someone and it’s like they’re thinking the complete opposite of what’s coming out of their mouth?” Sarah huffed while shoving the cabinet drawer closed.
“Not really. That person’s usually me.”
“But why?” she asked. “Why can’t you just be normal?”
“I mean, it’s not my go-to response of course. It’s normally reserved for occasions when I am trying to indulge someone because I know they’re talking bullshit. Like, when I know Mike has been gambling but he tries to deny it? It’s just easier to figure him out that way.”
Sarah froze to the spot, looking at her friend. She breathed a heavy sigh and turned to lean back on the table behind her and crossed her arms. She stared at her shoes for a second.
“Chris is a smart guy. I’ll give him that.” Audrey muttered loudly so she was sure Sarah could hear.
“Give me something! I’m your friend here.” She implored her before chuckling to herself at Audrey’s face and her own apparent lack of self-awareness.
“You know what I think? You’ve probably got withdrawal symptoms from the all the amazing sex you’ve had and now you’re sulking. I think you should get back on that horse and let him fuck you again. That’s what this is.”
Sarah eyed her friend again. For once, she would love to hear someone tell her that she was right. “That’s really not helping, y’know.”
“And this is?!” Audrey’s shriller tone cut through the dry air, smacking Sarah right in the face. “Honey, this isn’t healthy. You hiding out in the hospital and treating it like your own solace is not healthy at all. I love you but you are your own worst enemy.”
“Alright, thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you for your unswerving efforts to be honest with me at all times and not, like a normal pal, be comforting in any way.” Sarah comically bowed to her friend before considering leaving the office. She would have followed through with the idea as well if it wasn’t for the cosy warmth of O’Brien’s office versus the coldness of the ER department thanks to a leaking pipe. “It’s difficult. I’m sorry. I don’t wanna fall out with you, Audrey.”
Audrey just smiled at her. “I don’t know why you think you have to be the beacon of morality all the time, Sarah. Take a look around. No one else is. We all out here just trying to live our lives as best we can and a part of that is taking advantage of moments of happiness when we find them.”
Something about what Audrey was saying did resonate with her but comparing two months of happiness with Chris to ten years with Shanna was not something she could in good conscience do. Shanna was her security blanket. She provided a comfort of living with someone with shared life experience, of knowing how little you thought about yourself because you were given up as a baby. Honestly, from the very first day they had met, Sarah felt lucky to know her.
Yes, Shanna could be immature at times. Maybe a little selfish. She would often get carried away with trivial things and wasn’t the most reliable person, but what Sarah got in return was worth that and more. Her family enjoyed highlighting the maternal care Sarah would have to provide to someone who was seven months older than she was, but honestly it didn’t matter.
Maybe this was one of the rare occasions where Audrey was wrong.
Chris was a fling at best, Sarah told herself, when she was lying in bed struggling to fall asleep. When she was cold and missing his arms around her. They were both having shitty times and they both got something out of it. That was what Chris had said himself at the very beginning.
Chris 08.15am: You home? Shanna said you were working late again
It was like he knew she would be thinking about him.
Chris 08.17am: I really dont want u ignoring me all the time. This is hard for me right now as well
Fuck.
Sarah 08.21am: I kno. I’m so sorry I made you feel like that :(
He didn’t respond. She thought she saw the tell-tale three dots of him writing something but nothing appeared. Giving up on sleep, she got up and headed into the kitchen. Shanna had left her some bacon in the fridge and a fresh bread bun on the side so she turned on the grill and set about making some coffee.
She felt strangely awake for this time and the apartment was nice and warm from the bright sunshine streaming in from all corners. Maybe a run would help. Or a cold shower.
Chris 08.44am: I wanna be honest with u but I dont think u want that
Chris 08.45am: so what do i do??
Fuck knows.
Chris 08.51am: Can I come over?
Sarah 08.54am: that’s not a good idea
Chris 08.55am: cos you know what will happen?
Chris 08.56am: what does that tell you??
She was sure he was nursing some kind of hangover or, quite possibly, he was still a little bit drunk. There were two responses she could give, she figured. The first would be her usual denial and perhaps an excuse that she was busy or working later than planned. The second, and ultimately the one she opted for, was to agree with him.
Sarah 09.05am: I know what it tells me. That’s why I’m saying you shouldn’t come over
Another three dots followed. There was only so many times they could go around and around in circles and as much as Audrey’s words made sense to her, it felt like she had to make the effort to regain some normality.
He didn’t respond. She stared at her phone for an age but nothing came through. Maybe he got the message? Maybe he had fallen asleep. She was both relieved and suspicious; Chris wasn’t someone who backed down from an argument when he thought he was right. He had said as much himself.
She turned the grill off, having lost her appetite. A run might make more sense and could help clear her head.
She couldn’t sit around waiting for Chris to make his next move.

Living Room Graduation
You’re due to graduate from college, but due to COVID, it was cancelled. Chris, your neighbor, and his brother try to give you a graduation anyway.
-
           You were gutted, to say the least, about your graduation being cancelled. Actually, your entire final semester was cancelled, your parents were stuck with your grandparents in Maine, and you had a huge old house to yourself and you couldn’t even have anyone quarantine with you. So you were at your worst, skipping Google Hangouts classes to re-watch the same TV shows you’d seen four times to binge all of the Lord of the Rings movies (you don’t even like them really, they’re just on Netflix), to sleep for fourteen hours a day, and only leave the house for curbside pickup or your weekly Starbucks run. You were completely and utterly done with life at that point.
           It was around seven when you realized the trash collector was supposed to come in half an hour, so you sprung out of bed, threw on some shorts, and tried to make it. You probably looked like a mess, and it only slightly comforted you when you saw your neighbor, Chris, walking his own trash out in a sweatshirt and sweatpants. He was a sweet guy. He was an actor, he was in some of your favorite movies, and he had the sweetest dog who would sometimes come to your front yard and roll around. His brother, Scott, had been quarantining with him. At least they weren’t alone.
           “You forgot too?” Chris asked across the driveway. You were probably six or seven feet apart.
           “Yeah, my parents usually do this,” you responded. “But they’re stuck in Maine, so I’m here.”
           “Oh, no! Hey, aren’t you supposed to be finishing college? Boston U, right? Is it pre something?”
           “Pre-law,” you responded. You put the trash can down and crossed your arms in the cold, still talking to him. “I’m deferring law school for a year to try and get an internship and pay some of my loans off. I guess you’re not working right now, either?”
           “Nope. I got a series coming out on Apple, but nothing’s filming right now, so Scott and I are just kind of sitting ducks,” he answered. “I gotta go take the dog out for a walk, but you should come over at some point as long as you don’t have coronavirus. We’re good company. And we’d be glad to have you.” You smiled.
           “Thank you,” you said with a smile on your face. “Yeah, it’s freezing, I’m going back inside to put some pants on.” He laughed as you turned and walked across the driveway, bare-footed, until you reached your front door and slipped inside.
           From that March evening, you were a regular at the Evans house. You came over for breakfast, lunch, even dinner sometimes. You and Scott would sit on the couch, Dodger between you, and watch TV for most of the day until you had to tune into class, when you’d run home. As it started warming up, you started using their pool. You missed your family, but Chris and Scott were quickly becoming some of your favorite people. Chris even networked you with one of his lawyers who was helping him with a political website he was coming out with, earning you a remote internship for the summer.
           May came and your spirits were low, despite the fact that you had Chris and Scott all but living with you. You hated the fact that you couldn’t even protest for your classes to be graded so your GPA remained at a 3.89 and wouldn’t round up. You hated that your parents still weren’t home because they were taking care of your grandparents still. You hated being in that big farmhouse, all alone, even though your friends were next door. You hated the fact that you couldn’t do any school traditions or even remotely celebrate your graduation. But you tried to keep yourself occupied, like watching all of the Marvel movies with Scott just to annoy the shit out of Chris.
           “Oh, come on! I don’t look that bad!” Chris defended as you were watching the first Captain America. He was making lunch for the three of you (because you and Scott only wanted to postmates in and Chris insisted on making food), so he was in the kitchen just behind where you and Scott were laughing and commenting.
           “Dude, no one looks good in polyester stars and stripes! Just admit it!” You said to him. He groaned and jokingly shoved you into the couch. “I’m sorry. You just make it so easy to make fun of you.”
           “I could say the same. You weren’t fooling anyone when you put that sweater on while you were tanning outside.” That was right – you had put a sweater on over your bikini the day before when you were at their pool, trying to cover up the fact that you were attending class and tanning at the same time.
           “Oh, that’s different!” You said, walking into the kitchen just to punch him in the side. You’d seen how he worked out and that was definitely the most vulnerable part of him.
           “Hey!”
           “Guys, no roughhousing!” Scott called, not even bothering to look behind you. Your phone chimed, signaling that you had class in ten minutes, and you sighed.
           “Go on and use the office,” Chris said to you, “and I’ll have lunch after.”
           “Thank you,” you replied, grabbing your laptop and running up the stairs to Chris’s office area. He always kept it the cleanest room in the house, but it was filled with pictures of him and his co-stars, pictures of him and his family. Your favorite was a framed picture of Dodger right in front of his computer.
           You logged into class and the Google Hangouts noise started playing loudly. Chris looked up at the ceiling before walking over to Scott, knowing that you were getting ready for class and wouldn’t be back down. He sat down next to his brother and pet the dog who was always at his side.
           “Okay, since her graduation got cancelled, I wanna do something,” Chris said to Scott. “She deserves it. And her parents aren’t even here to see her graduate.”
           “Well, what do you want to do?” Chris sighed, taking his phone from his pocket, and looked up your college’s website. Then he saw the COVID information page, which had plans for graduation on it.
           “It looks like they’re doing a virtual graduation with all of their names and pictures and everything. So maybe we could screen it here, give her a nice brunch and some alcohol, make her feel not so anti-climactic,” he suggested, handing Scott the phone. The graduation was going to be on YouTube, so it was easy to pull up on the TV. And they could lure you over under the guise of something else and surprise you with it.
           “Alright, then, how do you wanna do this? We have to make some excuse to keep her out until that time.”
           “Just… You go with her on a Starbucks run or something after class today. Find a way to make sure it’s the one across town. That’ll give me enough of a chance to make some food and put some stuff up and go over to her house and steal her cap and gown.”
           “Christopher, you are a mastermind,” Scott said. “Remind me never to piss you off while we’re in quarantine. You have time, money, and motive.” Chris chuckled and went back to making lunch, bringing the meat out to the grill while you were still in class.
           Over the next few days, you didn’t suspect anything. You went along with everything, as usual, and Chris was even alone with you as you walked Dodger. He managed to keep it a secret, even though he wanted to burst and tell you that you shouldn’t be sad on your graduation. The week leading up to it, he forced you to use the office space almost every day. He gave you food and coffee, he made you take breaks for your sanity, and he made you get nine hours of sleep every night. Finally, the day before graduation, you burst into the door.
           “Guys!” You said loudly, holding a printed piece of paper. “I contested to get my classes graded instead of pass fail and they did it! I have a 3.9 now!”
           “That’s amazing!” Chris said, walking over to give you a hug.
           “What? That’s awesome!” Scott got up off the couch and hugged you too. Even Dodger looked excited.
           “So now I can actually say I have a 3.9.”
           “Let me see it!” Chris took the paper from your hands, looking at all of your grades. Despite all of the meltdowns and classes you skipped, you managed an A in every single one of them. “I’m so proud of you!” He said, hugging you again.
           “I’m going to go call my parents,” you said.
           “Oh, by the way,” Chris said, grabbing you before you could make it out the door. “Come over tomorrow at 8:30. No questions asked, alright? And wear something cute?” You gave him a look before turning around and leaving.
           “Dude, you basically spoiled it!” Scott said, elbowing his brother.
           “What happened to no roughhousing?” Chris asked. He ran away before Scott could do anything. He had some work to do, if only for you.
           The next morning you showed up at their door at exactly 8:30, carrying a six pack and hoping that whatever they had planned would allow you to get drunk. You’d finally passed out after watching Baccalaureate and the awards ceremonies all by yourself. Your best friend was the valedictorian, too, and you called her to cry about it. But you were up bright and earlier than usual when Scott opened the door and shuffled you in. Red and white was everywhere – they’d pulled out some Christmas decorations that were red garlands, Chris had literally put glitter confetti all over a table, and there was a cookie cake on the table with your name on it.
           You teared up as soon as you saw the cookie cake. You could smell breakfast, too. He’d made you an entire meal, bigger than the usual kind. Both of the boys were wearing red, too, and you beamed. They’d planned you an entire graduation party in their living room because you couldn’t go to yours.
           “What?” You asked. They both just laughed and embraced you in an Evans sandwich.
           “I stole your cap and gown too,” Chris said, “you should really lock your doors when you’re over here for class.” You laughed.
           “Thank you, so much, guys.”
           “It’s the least we can do. We’re proud of you. Come on and get some food and alcohol and we can cry through the ceremony together.” You laughed again and started making the rounds in the kitchen, grabbing a little bit of everything except for some extra bacon, and you let Chris pour you a massive glass full of alcohol for yourself. He brought out your gap and gown and your cords and stoles and made you put them on. The ceremony started at 9, so you weren’t too pressed for time. But you sat down between the two of them, Dodger right on top of you, and watched as your name eventually came on screen. Both boys cheered and nudged you, clinking all of your glasses together.
           “I’m so proud of you,” Chris said, “really.” You leaned into his shoulder and then Scott’s, just grateful that you had them.
           “I’m really glad we took the trash out at the same time,” you said with a sniffle.
           “Oh, don’t cry! Come on, we have alcohol!” Scott said. That just made you laugh.
           “Come on, kid,” Chris said as he messed up your hair. “Let’s get some cake.”
A/N: I’m sorry this is so short but I hope you like it! Congrats to anyone in the Class of 2020!

i wanna be known (by you)
part 1/2 || word count: 6.5k || read on AO3
“I didn’t mean to do it.”
Hen glances down at Eddie’s phone then back up at him in disbelief. “How do you ‘not mean’ to download a bunch of dating apps but still have them on your phone?”
Or
In which Eddie delves into the intimidating world of online dating.
“I didn’t mean to do it.”
Hen glances down at Eddie’s phone then back up at him in disbelief. “How do you ‘not mean’ to download a bunch of dating apps but still have them on your phone?”
Eddie ducks his head, feeling a warm blush work its way up his neck and onto his cheeks. He can’t tell Hen the truth. It’s a pathetic story that includes a night without Christopher, a bottle of red wine, and a very sad Spotify playlist. “It just happened.”
“Okay,” Hen says, but her tone makes it painstakingly obvious that she doesn’t believe him. Eddie is just grateful that she’s choosing not to call him out on his lie. “So, remind me what you need me for again?”
When Eddie woke up this morning, he had a phone full of apps he didn’t remember downloading but couldn’t bring himself to delete. Sober him was too scared to take the first step towards putting himself out there again, but apparently last night’s wine-drunk version of him wasn’t. He was thankful for that courage, up until he tried logging into the first app and realized that he was way out of his depth. He needed help and he knew exactly who he could turn to.
“I don’t know how to use them.”
Hen leans closer to Eddie so that she can hear him over the chatter in the firehouse. “Can you say that again? I didn’t hear you.”
“I don’t know how to use that dating app,” Eddie repeats, gesturing to the one that Hen currently has open on his phone. When her eyes widen behind her glasses, he resigns himself to being a little overheated for the entirety of his conversation thanks to his embarrassment. “Or any. I’ve never used one before.”
He braces himself for whatever jokes Hen has up her sleeve in response to his confession - she always has at least three at her disposal - but they never come. Instead she says, “alright, then let me show you.”
“What?”
“I’m going to show how to use the app.” Hen tilts the phone in his direction so that he can see what she’s doing. “Once you get the basics down for this one, using the rest of the apps will be a breeze.”
Eddie’s mouth falls open. He had mentally prepared himself for the teasing he’d be on the receiving end of as soon as he recruited Hen for assistance. He knew it would be done good-naturedly, which is why she was the one he chose to turn to. “You’re not gonna make fun of me?”
Hen sighs, lowering Eddie’s phone and using her free hand to hold his. It’s an unexpected move, but not unwelcome. “C’mon, Eddie. In what world would I possibly make fun of you for putting yourself out there again?”
Her brown eyes bore into his and it takes all of Eddie’s strength not to look away. They’ve been working together for close to two years now. It’s how she knows about Shannon’s passing and how much of a mess Eddie was after it happened. “Thank you,” he whispers.
She pats his hand before picking up his phone again. “Now, enough of that. It’s time for us to get down to business.”
She inputs some basic information on Eddie’s behalf, all the while showing him what she’s doing so he can do it on his own with the other apps later.
“And now all that’s left before we choose some of your pictures is to put in your sexual preference,” Hen explains, finger hovering over the word ‘women’.
Eddie’s heart rate kicks up a couple of notches as Hen moves to click that word, not even bothering to acknowledge the other two options. It’s a conversation Eddie has never had at work, not because he’s ashamed, but because it’s never come up.
He can let Hen believe her assumption is correct and choose the ‘women’ option for him now and go home and change it for himself later. She would be none the wiser and nothing would change. But, Eddie decides that that’s not what he wants. Hen, hell the entire 118, have become his family and it doesn’t feel right to lie to family. Not that he’s been lying so much as omitting the truth.
“Actually,” Eddie interjects, cutting off whatever Hen was in the middle of saying. If he doesn’t do this now, he might never do it. He holds his breath as he lightly knocks her hand out of the way so that he can bypass the ‘men’ and ‘women’ option to choose ‘both’.
She looks over at him, shock clearly written across her face before letting out a startled laugh. “Okay, Diaz. I see you.”
He exhales, happy that coming out to her was as simple as that. No questions, no accusations, nothing. It makes a weight he didn’t even know he was carrying float away and he’s lighter because of it.
He knocks his shoulder against Hen’s and she does the same back to him before giving him his phone back.
“Okay, time to pick the pictures you want on your profile.” Hen taps her chin before saying, “taken a picture with any puppies recently? No one, man or woman, can deny a cute man holding an even cuter puppy.”
Tumblr media
Buck, 26 Los Angeles, CA Birthmark not eye herpes.
“He’s cute.” Eddie drops his phone face down onto his lap, heart racing as he looks over his shoulder. Hen is standing there, smirk firmly in place. He doesn’t know how long she’s been there and he’s not sure that’s something he wants to know. If she’s been there the whole time, that would mean she knows he’s been openly staring at this guy’s profile for the last twenty minutes. “Did someone punch him in the face?”
“Did someone punch who in the face?” Chim asks as he raids the fridge for a snack.
Bobby must be in his office or somewhere else in the station because no one would ever dare to mess with anything in the kitchen when he’s around, especially the fridge. They’re all convinced he has some kind of organization system in place in there that he refuses to tell them about. It’s the only way to explain how he always knows when something’s been moved.
Eddie shoves his phone into his back pocket as if doing so will suddenly end this conversation. “No. No one.” He clears his throat. “No one got punched.”
Hen snorts, mouthing ‘smooth’ at Eddie before heading into the kitchen area to make herself a cup of coffee. She only gets as far as replacing the coffee filter when the alarm suddenly sounds overhead. They’re all heading for the stairs in an instant, leaving everything behind in the loft as they go.
Well, almost everything.
Eddie’s mind strays to brilliant blue eyes and a bruise-like birthmark as he jumps into the fire truck.
Tumblr media
“Why is this so hard?”
Eddie stares at his darkened phone screen before tapping his finger against it. When he does, Buck’s profile lights up the otherwise dark room. He’s spent close to an hour on the app, finger ready to swipe right on Buck, before chickening out, letting the phone lock itself and then repeating the process all over again.
There are people out there who use dating apps with ease and it’s apparent to Eddie that he’s not one of them. He probably should’ve seen this coming as soon as he asked Hen for help setting up his profile, but he didn’t. He had foolishly assumed that creating his profile was the final hurdle he needed to get past before putting himself back out there in the dating world. He didn’t take into consideration the fact that there was still one last hurdle to get past - actually swiping right on someone.
It sounds completely innocuous when it’s put that way - swiping right. It’s nothing more than a quick motion, a movement that can be done in the blink eye.
For Eddie though, it’s more than that. For him, it’s the equivalent of letting someone know you like them and hoping that they feel the same. It’s a position that Eddie hasn’t been in in years and, now that he’s stepped back into it, the ground has become unsteady beneath his feet.
But it’s time, it’s been time. If he doesn’t now, when will he?
“Fuck it.”
With a bout of confidence that wells up from an unknown source somewhere deep within him, he unlocks his phone and finally swipes right.
The action alone is enough to make Eddie smile triumphantly. He did it. He didn’t think he could, but he did and now -
You’ve matched!
The words on his screen are accompanied by two small circles - one that has Eddie’s profile picture and the other has Buck’s. It must be the app’s way of letting him know what him and his match will look like together, but all it’s done is send Eddie’s heart rate spiking. He’s been so focused on the steps that needed to be taken to put himself out in the dating world again that he didn’t stop to think about what would come after that.
In this case, that ‘after’ means sending a message to the person he’s matched with.
“Shit.”
Tumblr media
“Daddy?”
Eddie puts his phone down right away, screen facing down so that he can offer up all of his attention to his son. They’re sitting at the table working on a project for one of Chris’s classes and, although Chris swore that he could handle it on his own, Eddie chose to sit across from him and offer up some moral support. There aren’t too many days where he can just sit and be in his son’s company, so he figured he’d take advantage of the opportunity today. “Yeah, Chris?”
“Are you mad at your phone?”
“I- what?”
“You were looking at it like this.” Chris pushes his eyebrows together with the tips of his pointer fingers and turns his lips down in an exaggerated pout. Something tells Eddie he didn’t look exactly like that, but maybe that’s how obvious his mood is to his son. And here Eddie was thinking that he was good at keeping his emotions under lock and key. “You only make that face when you’re mad.”
“I’m not mad.”
And he’s not, at least not per se. He’s mostly just aggravated at himself and his inability to type up a simple message.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Chris asks earnestly. It’s done in such a way that Eddie doesn’t know what to do with himself. It’s something he definitely cannot take credit for teaching his son. Not him, someone who makes it a point to bury his feelings so deep beneath the surface that it would take at least a full day of digging to actually reach. “Carla always tells me that it’s good to talk about my feelings instead of letting them bubble inside me.”
“Carla’s right,” Eddie admits. He wishes there had been someone out there to tell him that when he was younger. It would’ve been refreshing to hear in comparison to his father’s motto of keeping everything bottled up inside where no one can see it.
“So, why are you mad, daddy?”
Chris’s head is tilted just so and it makes it impossible for Eddie to tell him anything other than the truth. Or at least a version of the truth that’s appropriate for Chris’s ears. “I made a new friend recently and I’m trying to figure out what to say to him.
“Oh!” Chris is excited about this, something that's apparent to Eddie after years of learning how to read his son. It might’ve been hard for him to really decipher his son’s words and actions upon returning from overseas, but Eddie found his bearings over time. For example, if not for Chris’s voice, Eddie would be able to deduce his son’s excitement from the red in the apple of cheeks and the flailing of his limbs. “That’s easy. You just say, ‘hi’.”
“Hi?”
“Yeah, what else would you say?”
His son makes a very valid point and Eddie feels a little foolish for not thinking of that himself.
“When’d you get so smart, kid?”
Chris’s answering grin is bright as he picks up his pencil to get back to his project. “I’ve always been smart.”
Eddie laughs before grabbing his phone, unlocking it and opening the app where an introduction is waiting for him. There’s no world where he would've considered typing a message to an almost stranger after a conversation with his son, but who cares. He’s tired of overthinking things.
He types up the short message quickly, hitting send before he has a chance to second guess himself.
Eddie (6:42pm): hi
Buck (6:43pm): hey! :)
Tumblr media
“Carla send you a cute picture of Chris again?”
Dazed, Eddie glances up and finds Bobby staring back at him. “Huh?”
“Picture of Chris?” Bobby asks, pointing at Eddie’s phone. “You’ve been smiling at your screen for the past five minutes.”
“Oh uh yeah.” Eddie is quick to switch over to his photos app and pull up a picture that he had taken of Chris at the park yesterday. His captain will be none the wiser of when it was actually taken. “The two of them went to the park today since Chris had a half-day,” he explains as he holds his phone out for Bobby to see.
Bobby’s eyes light up immediately. It’s a reaction that Eddie’s grown accustomed to whenever Chris is involved. There’s no denying just how cute his son is.
Eddie waits until later, after Bobby has gone back to his office and no one else is around, to open the dating app that he spends a fair amount of time on these days. And to think, only a week ago he was asking for help on how to use the app.
Eddie (3:02pm): my boss called me out for smiling like an idiot at my phone
Eddie (3:02pm): I’m mortified
Buck (3:03pm): hi mortified! i’m buck!
Eddie shakes his head, biting the corner of his lip to keep from laughing.
Eddie (3:04pm): you’re the worst
Buck (3:07pm): if I was the worst would you really be smiling like an idiot at your phone because of me?
Eddie (3:09pm): I never said that YOURE the reason I was smiling at my phone
Buck (3:10pm): you haven’t denied it yet either ;)
Tumblr media
Eddie stares off into space, trying to find the words he needs to send a message he should’ve sent ages ago. It’s just that talking to Buck these past two weeks has been fun, easy, and he never found the right time to bring up the fact that he has a son. Maybe if they had met in person, it’s something that would’ve been mentioned much sooner, but it’s different since the two of them are only messaging each other. Eddie is sure that there must be some kind of etiquette about telling someone you’ve met online that you’re a single parent, he just hasn’t figured out what it is just yet.
But, as he watches his son whoop happily as he flies down the playground’s slide, Eddie knows it’s time to be upfront with Buck and tell him. Better now than further down the line, especially if Buck has a problem with Eddie having a kid.
He really hopes he doesn’t.
Eddie (5:42pm): I have to tell you something.
Eddie thrums his fingers against his phone and tells himself that the way his stomach swoops has everything to do with the burrito he had for lunch today.
He doesn’t have to wait long for Buck’s response.
Buck (5:44pm): Is this when I find out that the pictures on your profile aren’t actually yours?
Buck (5:44pm): I knew it was too good to be true
Buck (5:45pm): Who’s THAT good-looking and easy to talk to???
Buck (5:46pm): I wonder if I can get on Catfish with this story
Buck (5:47pm): I’ve always wanted to be friends with nev
Eddie thinks that maybe he would’ve laughed if he wasn’t so nervous. He types out the message quickly, but between checking on Christopher again and his own nerves, it takes him longer to hit send.
Eddie (5:55pm): I have a son.
Buck (5:56pm): Cool! How old is he?
Eddie’s eyes widen, it can’t be that easy. Can it?
Eddie (5:57pm): he’s 9
Buck (5:58pm): that’s such a fun age!
And, because apparently Eddie doesn’t know to not look a gift horse in the mouth, he shares his disbelief with Buck.
Eddie (6:00pm): you’re okay with the fact that i have a kid?
Buck (6:01pm): i love kids
Buck (6:02pm): i’m a 1st grade teacher
Buck (6:02pm): did i never mention that?
He most certainly did not. Although, now that Eddie thinks about it, he never told Buck what he does for a living either. He should probably do that.
It’s interesting, the details that don’t come to the surface versus those that do in the world of online dating. Eddie’s sure that, had he met Buck in person, them talking about what they did for a living would’ve been one of the first things to come up in a conversation.
Eddie (6:04pm): you didn’t but i’m glad i know now
Eddie (6:05pm): i’m a firefighter by the way
Buck (6:06pm): you’re kidding me
Eddie (6:07pm): nope
Buck (6:08pm): so you’re hot, easy to talk to AND a firefighter
Eddie’s face heats up at the casual mention of his own attractiveness. Apparently being complimented via text makes him react the same way he would’ve had he heard the compliment in person. Add that to the list of things he’s learned thanks to the world of online dating.
Buck (6:09pm): please do not be alarmed if i don't respond for the next hour or so, i need time to properly digest all of this information
Buck (6:34pm): totally unrelated question, but if i set my apartment on fire right now will you come save me?
Tumblr media
“I know that look.”
Eddie startles, almost dropping his phone in the process. When he seeks out the person who has caught him off guard, he’s surprised to see May. What surprises him even more is how the knowing look on her face is an exact match for the one he’s seen Athena wear countless times before.
It’s unsettling.
“Aren’t you supposed to be with the boys?”
Eddie and Chris already had plans for a movie night when he overheard Hen complaining about her babysitter canceling on her and Karen, thus leaving them without anyone to watch Denny on date night. Eddie, knowing that Chris wouldn’t mind the extra company, told Hen that Denny was more than welcome to join him and Chris for movie night. Then, because Bobby was sitting right next to him, Eddie extended the invitation to Harry and May as well.
It’s how he ended up here in his home on a Friday night with three young boys and May.
“I was, but they’re thirsty so I told them I’d come by and see what’s taking you so long.” May walks a little further into the kitchen and leans against the counter. “I wasn’t expecting you to be distracted by whoever it is you're texting and obviouslycrushing on.”
Eddie splutters. “I-what?” He can’t remember the last time he was called out for having a ‘crush’ on someone. The term itself sounds so juvenile. “I wasn’t texting and I’m not ‘crushing on’ anyone.”
May rolls her eyes. “You might be able to fool an adult with that argument, but not me. I saw the heart eyes you were directing at your phone as soon as I walked in here. So, can we skip past the part where you try to deny it?”
Eddie’s jaw falls open at May’s bluntness. He really thought he was in for an easy and fun night with the kids and instead he’s being called out by a teenager. If this is what he has to look forward to when Chris gets older, Eddie will start looking into ways to keep his son nine-years-old forever.
As if conjured by his father’s thoughts, Chris yells, “daddy! Are you coming back with our hot chocolates?”
Eddie moves to pick up the tray of mugs he was planning to bring to his living room before getting sidetracked but May beats him to it. She purposely takes two mugs off of the tray, leaving them behind on the counter. “I’ll take these to the boys, get the movie started, and then we’re gonna talk.”
Her tone leaves no room for argument and all Eddie can do is stare at her as she walks away. He’s always known better than to get on Athena’s bad side and, tonight, he’s learned that the same can be said for May.
Accepting that there’s no escaping what he’s sure is about to be a very thorough interrogation, Eddie picks up the two mugs May left behind and brings them to the table before sitting down. He’s tempted to message Buck while he waits for her to return but messaging him earlier was what got him into this situation to begin with.
“Okay,” May says as soon as she returns, taking the seat across from Eddie and wrapping her hands around her mug. “Spill.”
“Spill?”
“Yes, spill. Who’s got you looking at your phone like a lovestruck teenager?
Eddie’s grateful he wasn’t taking a sip of his drink when May asked that question because he might’ve choked on it. Lovestruck teenager, really?
“Just someone I’ve been talking to for a couple of weeks now.”
“And?”
Eddie raises an eyebrow. “And what?”
“Can’t you be a little more detailed?” May leans forward, forearms resting on the table as her inquisitive brown eyes lock on Eddie. “When did you two meet? Where? Are they cute? Can I see a picture of them if you have one? Have they met the team yet?”
Eddie’s head is spinning from all the questions being thrown at him, but what really sticks out to him is May’s use of the gender-neutral terms ‘they’ and ‘them’. He’s grown so used to everyone around him assuming he’s straight, that it barely phases him when they use female pronouns. But here May is decidedly not doing that.
“They? Them?”
“You’ve never explicitly said what your sexual orientation is, and it’d be wrong of me to assume,” she explains, shrugging as if there’s nothing out of the ordinary with her reasoning. It’s that, her blasé attitude towards something people barely put any thought into, that cracks Eddie’s resolve.
“His name is Evan, but he goes by Buck.”
Eddie goes into more detail about the man that he’s been talking to, answering all of May’s questions about him. The experience makes him feel a little like his abuela when she sits at the dinner table gossiping with relatives.
“This is him,” Eddie tells her, sliding her phone across the table to her so that she can look at Buck’s pictures.
“Oh!” May exclaims, covering her mouth at the last second to keep from being too loud and drawing the boys’ attention away from their movie. “He’s cute.” She swipes through a few of Buck’s pictures. “Really cute. You two would look good together.”
Eddie does not puff out his chest a little bit at the compliment.
“Have you guys exchanged numbers yet?”
“No, why would we? We can just talk on the app.”
May shakes her head as she hands Eddie back his phone. “That’s the next step of online dating. You’ve gotta transition away from the app and, after messaging on it nonstop for three weeks straight, I think it’s time.”
Her statement lingers in Eddie’s mind later that night after all the kids have been picked up and Chris is tucked in and asleep. Honestly, he never even thought about asking Buck for his number so they could text each other instead of having to rely on the app. It would definitely be much easier to remain in contact that way and Eddie won’t have to hide his phone every time he opens the app to keep anyone from seeing it. The messages app is much more inconspicuous.
Eddie (9:34pm): what are your thoughts on exchanging phone numbers?
Buck (9:40pm): i thought you’d never ask :)
Tumblr media
Eddie is walking into the station when his phone chimes. The sound is followed shortly thereafter by a second chime. He’s carrying a tray full of drinks, having woken up early and in a good enough mood to stop by the team’s favorite coffee shop to pick something up for Bobby, Chim, Hen, and himself. The tray itself isn’t all that heavy, but Eddie doesn’t trust himself to carry it in one hand. If his friends found out that he had purchased them all drinks, only to end up spilling it right before their shift began, he’d never hear the end of it.
At the same time, there’s only one person who would be texting Eddie at this time. It’s the same person who he’s continued to talk to nonstop since they exchanged phone numbers.
Although him and Buck had already gotten into the habit of messaging one another through a dating site, things somehow feel different now that they’ve switched to texting. More intimate. More real.
With this on his mind, it’s easy for Eddie to decide to take the risk - balance the tray in one hand so he can use the other hand to retrieve his phone.
Buck (8:50am): my kids are going to be the death of me
Buck (8:51am): if I had known I was going to die today I would’ve at least dressed better
Buck’s flair for dramatics is a trait that Eddie learned about the younger man when they first began messaging each other. It’s thoroughly entertaining.
Eddie (8:54am): what happened?
Eddie (8:54am): just asking so i can give the police the correct info when the murder investigation begins
In place of a text, Eddie receives a picture. In the background, there’s a chalkboard that says ‘You’re the best, Mr. Buckley!’ and on a large desk which must belong to Buck, there are various cards and what looks like a container with cupcakes in it. Eddie would zoom in to confirm this assumption, but it’s a little hard to do so with one hand while walking up the stairs.
Eddie (8:56am): why are you the best?
Buck (8:57am): i’m thoroughly offended that you even have to ask that
Buck (8:58am): (it’s teacher appreciation day)
“Are those for us?”
Eddie stops abruptly. The drinks in the tray tilt precariously, but Chim steps forward to save them with a steadying hand.
“Well someone’s distracted this morning.”
“No I’m not,” Eddie argues, locking his phone and stepping around Chim so he can carefully place the drinks on the counter.
Chim’s there a moment later, grabbing the mixed berry smoothie he’s been trying to convince his coworkers to drink instead of coffee. He takes a long sip before leaning against the counter and studying Eddie. “Distracted and defensive. Something’s definitely going on with you.”
In place of answering and implicating himself, Eddie grabs his coffee and takes a sip. It’s nowhere near as good as the one Abuela makes for him at her place, but it has caffeine and that's what matters most. He’ll gladly drink anything that’ll help him get through a 24-hour shift.
Chim stares at Eddie a little too intently for his liking, but Eddie stands his ground and doesn’t look away. Looking away would mean admitting defeat and that’s not something Eddie is prepared to do, even if Chim’s observation is correct.
“There’s something different about you these days. And I intend to find out what it is.”
It’s definitely a threat, but it’s one that Eddie can handle especially since Hen and Bobby unwittingly come to his rescue only a few seconds later. They collect their drinks from the counter and thank Eddie for them before Hen engages Chim in a conversation. Bobby heads in the direction of the fridge, which temporarily allots Eddie some time to himself. He intends to use it wisely.
Eddie (9:03am): you definitely deserve the appreciation
Eddie (9:03am): those kids are lucky to have you as their teacher :)
Buck’s reply doesn’t come until much later in the day, but that doesn’t stop Eddie from laughing when he sees it.
Buck (4:10pm): I read your message during lunch with some of the other teachers and got mocked for my reaction to it
Buck (4:12pm): and no I will not tell you what that reaction was. you don’t deserve to know
Tumblr media
It’s late when Eddie finally gets home. Christopher is spending the night at Abuela's, which means it’s also silent as Eddie slowly makes his way towards his bedroom.
He hates it.
The silence reminds him of the last call from his shift. A neighbor had called in about a very loud argument going on in the house next to theirs. As soon as the 118 arrived at the scene and began gearing up, the sound of two gunshots pierced through the night air and threw everyone into high alert. The all-clear was given at some point thereafter and, when Eddie and the rest of the time were finally allowed inside of the house, they were met with silence.
Two DOAs. Nothing they could do to help either person.
Eddie changes out of his clothes on autopilot, thankful that he had the forethought to shower at the station. Now that he’s home, all he wants to do is crawl under the covers and forget about the horrors of the world for a little while.
He has just pulled back his covers and laid down in bed when his phone vibrates. It’s not until it happens a second time, that he checks to see who’s texted him.
Buck (10:45pm): pretty sure I just saw you and your team on the news?
Buck (10:45pm): could be wrong but I figured I’d ask
Right, the news. Eddie forgets that, sometimes, being a first responder means ending up on television. It’s a part of the job he could happily do without.
Eddie (10:50pm): yeah that was us
Buck (10:51pm): are you okay?
Without thinking, Eddie’s fingers tap out his response - yes. Right before hitting send though, he stops himself. No, he’s not okay. Not really.
It’s late, he’s tired, and he doesn’t feel like being a liar. Not tonight. It’s why he erases his original response and types a new one.
Eddie (10:52pm): no
Eddie puts his phone down beside him and closes his eyes. As soon as he does, the image of the dead man and woman from earlier infiltrates his mind. In comparison to everything he saw during his time in Afghanistan, the crime scene he witnessed today was nothing. But it’s the fact that it was a crime scene at all is what really got to him. Death was the norm overseas. It shouldn’t be the norm here, at home.
What’s the point of going off to war in the hopes of making the world a better place when violence can still be found everywhere you turn?
Eddie’s phone vibrates and, at first, he assumes it’s another text. When it continues vibrating, Eddie realizes that someone is calling him. Considering how late it is, he assumes it’s his grandma and is quick to pick up the electronic device. He’s about to accept the call when he sees the name at the top of the screen - Buck.
They’ve been messaging each other for over a month now and it’s become such an ingrained part of Eddie’s daily routine that it’s hard for him to imagine a time when that wasn’t the case. There have been moments where he’s felt like maybe they’ve been taking things a little too slowly and that, by now, other people would’ve met already. Or perhaps even gone on a date or two. But Eddie is in no rush and he’s been more than happy to keep things moving at this pace.
But now, here Buck is taking things another step further and catching Eddie completely off-guard. Exchanging phone numbers was one thing. Talking on the phone is something else entirely.
His phone is still buzzing in his hand and Eddie stares at it. The alternative to not answering this call is to continue lying in bed and being mocked by his overly quiet home. The latter is somehow scarier than the former.
“Hello?” The voice, Buck, says as soon as Eddie answers. It’s weird that Eddie can list off so many random details about Buck - what he does for a living, what his favorite taco place is, what kind of music he listens to when he’s in a bad mood, where he grew up - but he’s never actually heard him speak. Not until now.
“Hi, Buck.”
For a few seconds, all Eddie can hear is Buck’s breathing on the other end. Then, “I hope it’s okay that I called. It’s just, I saw the news about that call you were on and then you said you weren’t okay and just texting you back didn’t feel right. But maybe this is weird, and I should’ve asked you if it was okay before doing it. Sorry. My sister says I should work on my impulse control.”
Buck rambles when he’s nervous. That’s good to know.
“It’s okay,” Eddie tells him, smiling when he hears Buck’s sigh of relief. “I’m glad you decided to call.”
“You are?”
Eddie pulls the covers up to under his chin and turns, allowing him to wedge the phone between his ear and the pillow. “Yeah. It was too quiet in my house.”
“Christopher?”
“At Abuela’s for the night.”
Buck hums and Eddie relishes in the sound. It makes him regret not transitioning into phone calls with Buck sooner.
“Did you… want to talk about it?”
Eddie knows the ‘it’ that Buck’s referring to and also knows it’s that last thing he wants to be having a conversation about. “No.”
He doesn’t mean for the word to come out so harshly, but it does that of its own accord.
“Oh.”
“I’m just not really up for talking.”
“Right, of course.” Buck says in a rush. “You just got off of a crazy shift. You don’t need someone bothering you when all you really want is to rest.”
And, now that he’s said more, Eddie understands what Buck thinks Eddie meant when he said he’s not up for talking. “No no no.” He wants to correct this misunderstanding now before it leads to Buck hanging up the phone and leaving Eddie alone with his thoughts again. He’s not ready to stop hearing Buck’s voice, not now. Having just this small taste of it isn’t enough. “I just meant I don’t really want to talk, but if you do, I’m all ears.”
“Are you sure?” His voice is timid, small. “I talk a lot.”
“I’m sure.”
There’s rustling on Buck’s end and Eddie wonders if the other man is getting into a more comfortable position too. “Let me tell you about what my first graders did to me today.”
Tumblr media
It’s almost two in the morning when Eddie’s phone rings. He groans, rolling over onto his side and trying to ignore the loud intrusion altogether.
“Shut that off!” Someone in the bunk room calls out, and it’s that that fully wakes Eddie up. He’s the only one on shift that keeps his phone volume on at all times, just in case a call comes through from whoever is taking care of Christopher.
He scrambles out of his bunk, presses his phone against his chest in an attempt to dull the noise, and all but runs out of the bunk room. His eyes are still half-closed when he answers the call. “Hello?”
“Eddie.”
“Buck?” There’s a choked sob on the other end of the line. The sound is amplified in the stillness of the station around him, and it pierces Eddie’s heart. “What's wrong?
“I-” Buck gulps back air and Eddie reaches his free hand out, as if his touch will somehow reach Buck instead of the empty space around him. “I can’t sleep.”
Eddie is sure there’s more to the story than that, but it’s not his place to pry. Only a few nights ago, Buck offered Eddie the distraction he needed before going to bed. It’s only fair that he returns that favor.
“Do you want me to stay on the phone with you?”
That seems to bring some of Buck’s vocabulary back to him. His voice sounds raw when he says, “I don’t want to keep you up.”
“I was up anyways,” Eddie lies, making his way up to the station’s loft and sitting down on the sofa. It’s a little odd being up here with all the lights off and no one else around him. Odd, but peaceful.
“Let me tell you about some of the calls we had today.”
Eddie’s not sure just how much time has passed, but he’s in the middle of telling Buck a story about a woman who got stuck in her date’s window when he’s interrupted by soft snores. He smiles, thoughts drifting to the image of Buck asleep in bed with his phone still in his hand.
Eddie ends the call then and wills himself to get off of the sofa so he can catch at least another hour of sleep in the bunk room. The pull of sleep is far stronger than he’s expecting it to be and, instead of getting up like he should, he leans further back on the sofa and closes his eyes.
When he wakes up later, it’s with a dull ache in his neck, a small blanket tossed over his body, and two new messages from Buck.
Buck (6:40am): I’m sorry that i kept you up so late
Buck (6:52am): thank you for answering my call
Tumblr media
Eddie doesn’t need anyone to tell him what the next step to take with Buck is.
Before he can second guess himself or chicken out, he dials Buck’s number.
Buck answers on the first ring.
“Hey, Eddie!” Buck’s enthusiasm would be obvious to anyone who can hear him. It’s an observation Eddie made early on when they switched to daily phone calls. Whereas Eddie keeps his feelings as close to his chest as possible, Buck is happy to put them on full display. So much so that those same emotions always find a way to bleed into his voice. “I didn’t think we were going to be talking until later tonight?”
“Will you go out with me this Friday night?” Belatedly, Eddie adds, “like on a date?”
Eddie can’t remember the last time he’s had to ask anyone out, but that’s no excuse for forgetting just how nerve-wracking it is to wait for an answer.
Time loses its meaning as Eddie holds his breath, waiting for Buck to respond. It might be seconds but could also be minutes later when Buck finally speaks.
“Yeah I’d-I’d really like that.”
A bubble of laughter threatens to creep past Eddie’s lips, but he manages to keep it at bay. He can’t keep from smiling though. “Cool. I’ll text you the details.”
“I’m looking forward to it.”

1/3 of the Reality Stone fragments remained with its host, Ripley Ryan, in the hospital. Determined to finish what they started, the Black Widow and Winter Soldier headed to the Intensive Care Unit along with a team of mutants who were sent by Wanda Maximoff to cast a reality binding spell. Once their goal was achieved, there was nothing standing between them and Zemo at the Town Hall.
These events come AFTER the INN and MUSEUM and before the TOWN HALL.
THIS IS THE OFFICIAL CHAT LOG COVERAGE OF THE IC
BUCKY BARNES: Bucky pushed through the hospital doors with both hands, metal clinking against the acrylic outer shell and double paned panels. He was hot on Natasha's heels, having made a pitstop for the both of them at the museum before the rest of the crew could cause too much of an issue. When he caught up to her just before she hit the stairwell, he slid her a twin set of guns and then readjusted the strap to his AR. "Sure we can't just shoot first and ask questions later?"
NATASHA ROMANOFF: Although not in her suit, Natasha had clicked on the two Widow’s Bites that Barnes had taken from the Museum. The two guns were a gift from a poor S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who was now weaponless, but Natasha accepted them from James all the same. “You want to risk shooting the wrong person?” Checking how much ammo she had, the Widow shook her head. “Personal mission. Maybe bad form, but family first.” Knowing that Taskmaster was in the building - and still sore from their last run in  - Natasha quietly pushed the door open and raised her gun while she rounded the corner, coming face to face with a crying girl in scrubs. “Too easy.”
BUCKY BARNES: Bucky clicked his tongue at that. "Fuck form. I would've taken more, but I know how much Barton is attached to his bow." he was only mildly joking, using it as a way to fill the space so he didn't spiral into his own mind. "Think we should've accepted back up?" And now he really was joking, mirroring Nat with his own weapon. He stopped short when they came around the corner and he instinctively tightened his grip on his gun. "It's never that easy."
NATASHA ROMANOFF: Eyes rolling, Natasha quickly checked over her shoulder. “Easy to say when it fits the situation,” she hummed. “We do have back-up. Bobbi’s here and changing. She’s got the codes. Psylocke is somewhere looking for her friends. Apparently, Wanda is helping the mutants.” Whatever helped them through. Lowering her gun slightly, Natasha glanced from the sniffling young adult to the name tag she wore. “Hey, Astrid. Sad day at the hospital?”
YELENA BELOVA: Caught up in her own moping, ‘Astrid’ started at the sound of the woman’s voice and sat up as she quickly wiped at her eyes. “Oh my god, I’m so sorry. No. I mean -- yes. It’s a hospital. But our patients usually are cured. Just bad dating experiences. Dumb, I know.” She nudged her magazine closed. “Are you here to visit someone?”
BUCKY BARNES: "Bad dating experiences?" he couldn't keep the question out of his tone, the laughable disbelief. He cocked the gun single handedly before dropping it back in his grip. "In fact we are. Wanna tell me who it is you're crying over?"
YELENA BELOVA: Although his tone was a little snide, the brunette didn’t notice. It was lonely at the front desk if she wasn’t making rounds and her friends were fine but the recent dumping had taken a toll. “His name is Jim. He’s a nice guy. Was a nice guy. We went on a few dates and he went all two-faced. Completely ghosted me. That was three days ago.”
NATASHA ROMANOFF: Natasha wracked her brain. “Helmut,” she swore under her breath. “Astrid, have you talked to ‘Jim’ since?”
BUCKY BARNES: Bucky just...blinked at her. Then, all of a sudden he barked a laugh, shaking his head. "How mad would you be if I took out all of S.H.I.E.L.D.?" he asked, voice lower, only for Nat to hear. "Yeah, 'Strid, we just wanna talk to him. He's like family, you get it."
YELENA BELOVA: Finally really taking the guns in consideration, Astrid slowly stood and reached around her scrubs for her buzzer. “I should call Chris. He’s head of Hospital security and he can help you figure out where you’re headed.”
BUCKY BARNES: That wasn’t really part of the plan. “Yel-Astrid, Jim’s a little more important right now.” With a sigh, Bucky aimed the AR, barrel directed at ‘Astrid’. “We don’t need head of security.” A red dot appeared at the center of her scrubs, the buzz of the scope a sound only he could hear. “Just give Jim a call, yeah?”
YELENA BELOVA: “He’s not gonna answer,” she huffed as her eyes welled up again. “I just told you -- he’s not interested in me. I think it’s my thighs. It has to be.” Nearly crosseyed, she stared at the light on her scrubs and the demanding man. Fumbling for her phone, Astrid dialed with shaking fingers. Ring. Ring. Voicemail. “See? Thighs.”
BUCKY BARNES: Bucky clicked off the scope, the red light disappearing before he lowered his gun. ”I’m just gonna hit her. You good with that?” he asked Natasha.
NATASHA ROMANOFF: Watching the entire exchange, Natasha had shouldered past Yelena at one point to rummage through the cabinets behind the desk. They needed as much info about the Database as possible, and there a possibility some of Ripley’s medical records were there. At Bucky’s question, she glanced up. Yelena would be pissed, but the two of them had come for a reason. “Only if you’re done hearing about Jim.”
BUCKY BARNES: “Ha ha.” Bucky came over, keeping Astrid’s eyes on him as he came around the desk. “Hey, ‘Strid-“ he employed the same method he had used on the Wyngarde sister, slamming the side of his gun into her temple just hard enough to shake around some loose change. “You have great thighs.”
NATASHA ROMANOFF: “Oof.” Natasha exhaled as the gun connected with her sisters temple. Deftly moving to catch Yelena and ease her to the ground, the spy crouched down and inspected the welt that was already growing. It still didn’t look like Yelena, but she had stopped crying. “You could have been a little bit more graceful, but I’ll take it. Grab her.” Natasha rose. “We’re not leaving her for Taskmaster to find.” Best to let him think ‘Astrid’ had just abandoned her post or was doing her rounds. The S.H.I.EL.D. pager Bobbi had given her buzzed in her hand and Natasha pocketed it. “We’ve got a room. Intensive care unit, Room 8-1. You know, I always said Clint married up.” Grabbing Astrid’s badge for good measure, Natasha clicked the safety off on her gun. “Let’s go.”
KWANNON: Elsewhere, Psylocke and Laura had waited quietly in the shade of the building. The telepathic signal being emitted led the newly arrived X-Men to the hospital. Raven head tipped to the side, Psylocke held a hand out to gesture that Magik, Synch and Nico should enter the hospital. The door swung closed between them, faces flushing from recycled air. “Intensive Care Unit is the top floor. You know what to do?”
BUCKY BARNES: "Graceful?" it came out more as a scoff and Bucky crouched down, adjusting the AR to lay flat against his back again so he could sling Yelena's fake body over his shoulder. She hung limply, swaying back and forth when he stood. "When have you ever known me to be graceful." he said just as he twisted around, narrowly clipping Yelena's head on the edge of the counter. "ICU? What are the chances he'll be in a coma and I can just smother him."
EVERETT THOMAS: Synch followed Magik and the other witch into the hospital, trying his best not to let himself get too wrapped up in everything around him. This whole thing was pretty messed up of SHIELD, but his main focus was Laura. Even if she didn’t remember any of it, he still felt bonded to her in ways he could barely describe. And making sure she was safe was definitely high on his priorities. “Yeah, we’ve got it.” He responded to Kwannon, making sure to keep on high alert as he scanned their surroundings.
NATASHA ROMANOFF: The sneakers that she had worn as Lulu Gordon were more for show than actual practical use, and the treads were nearly nonexistent. Nat couldn’t actually remember working out in Pleasant Hill, just posing on her yoga mat for selfies instead. It was hard not to slide around with no traction but she pushed open a door to another stairwell and held it open for Bucky, watching to make sure he didn’t smack Yelena’s head into the wall. “You would have failed the Red Room,” she hummed. Presentation begets perfection, after all. Natasha had been the best. Yelena had been better. “Zemo’s at Town Hall. That’s not why we’re here. Ripley’s intubated upstairs. They’re making a play for the Infinity Stone. Did you read your file?” Stopping abruptly, Natasha flattened herself against the wall by the doorway of the next level. She could hear footsteps in the hall, and that felt deliberate in the quiet hospital. Gesturing with her chin towards the door, Nat pushed it open and raised her gun. She moved quickly to turn but still found her face connecting with a fist.
BUCKY BARNES: "I didn't care to read pages and pages of documents beyond who was who and what they were capable of." Which was a delicate way of saying, 'did you really think I would?'. Somewhere along the way of climbing flights, Bucky stashed Yelena's unconscious body in a medical supplies closet, knowing that she wouldn't wake up for a while and that he needed both hands. As soon as they both went into alert, hands moved too fast for Nat to dodge and him to barely skid to a stop and back up, gun immediately raising. He fired off a few rounds, the spray of bullets disoriented in the ambush.
NATASHA ROMANOFF: Wiping blood off her nose, Natasha dropped her gun and kicked it to the side. Bullets never tended to work with Taskmaster. She’d keep it for backup. He had his shield and a collapsed bow. Claws in his gloves. Basically, he was as tricked out as ever. “Still sore about last time?” The ( former ) redhead squared her shoulders back. “Zemo can’t be offering you enough for this.” But he was silent, like always, and a moment later the two were locked in hand to hand combat.
ILLYANA RASPUTINA: Sword pulled off of her back, Illyana cast a wary look around the hall. “I hate hospitals,” she muttered. Wanda’s spell was complicated but she had drilled it into the sorceress and witch. “It would be easier if we could teleport out after, but apparently we have to walk. No mutant left behind.” Lorna, Gabby, Rogue.
LAURA KINNEY: As the mutants made their way through the hospital, Laura paused and narrowed her eyes. There were more people in the hospital than their should have been. “Take the back.” She instructed Kwannon. “James Barnes is moving to the southern wing.”
BUCKY BARNES: Bucky dropped the gun, the strap catching on his shoulder before it banged against his hip. It was only Taskmaster, the asshole with the psuedo copycat style and a piss poor attitude. "Less talking-" he kicked at Taskmaster, just hard enough to diverge his attention and have him focused on both of them. "Glad I dropped our nice office secretary off, huh."
NATASHA ROMANOFF: He had got in three good hits but Natasha was at four. “Nursing student,” she huffed as she dodged a kick. “This is a dead end. He won’t quit. It’s called a distraction.”
EVERETT THOMAS: Everett followed closely behind, trying his best to keep close to Laura without making her feel like he was suffocating her. He didn’t want to make things weird in any way, but God was it hard. “Hey uh, are you okay?”
BUCKY BARNES: "So in all those times you've fought him, you never figured out a way to beat him?" They parried some more, moving this way and that. "I'm not going to leave you here to get your pretty yoga instructor face punched in."
BOBBI MORSE: One of the doctor’s personal offices had always been stocked for agents -- as a safety precaution. It was working well in their favor. Her locker held a spare uniform and set of staves that she gratefully hooked into their holsters before grabbing three disruptors. One went onto her own neck and her body shuddered in relief as her appearance twisted back to its regular self. She broke out in a sprint until she found Barnes and Romanoff, and Bobbi tossed them each a chip before kicking off the wall to strike Taskmaster with a baton. As she should have predicted, his bow separated into staves of his own. “What’re you guys still doing down here?”
NATASHA ROMANOFF: If she hadn’t been focused on not getting slashed in half with a sword, Natasha would have rolled her eyes. “It keeps evolving. More new heroes, more moves. We haven’t killed each other yet.” The elastic she had tied her hair up with was falling out, but then Bobbi was there. Nat caught the small chip and quickly fastened it on the back of her neck. There was a second before her body was her own once more, clothed in the uniform she had entered the town with. Even though she was lacking any of her weapons other than the Widow’s Bite, it felt good to see her own hands again. “How about my normal face getting punched in?”
BUCKY BARNES: "That isn't obvious?" Bucky said, arms coming up to cover his face when Taskmaster slammed a fist down. Jumping back, he caught the chip, using what he knew from the file to revert his appearance back into something a little bulkier, steadier, familiar. "It's not exactly easy to get to the reality stone harboring mad woman when there's 600 tons of body armor in the way."
LAURA KINNEY: Lips twitching, Laura pivoted on one heel. “I look like a cheerleader.” She had gone to pep rallies with pom-poms and enthusiasm. The whole nine yards. The worst part was that she had fun, on some level. That pretty much summed up how she was. “I want them to cast the spell so we can get out of here. No more Vaults, no more Pleasant Hill’s.”
BOBBI MORSE: “I have complete and total faith in this woman.” Bobbi held a hand to her temple to  stop her vision from swimming after a hit. “But we need to keep moving. Nat, you said you’re old friends. I don’t want to ruin the reunion.” When the redhead nodded, Bobbi arched a brow at Bucky before running into the nearest stairwell and taking the stairs two at a time.
EVERETT THOMAS: Everett couldn’t help his soft chuckle at the cheerleader comment as he nodded at her. “I mean, it’s not a bad look. Definitely not you, though.” He pointed out, nodding solemnly at her next words. But unfortunately, they were X-Men and this was probably not going to be the last Pleasant Hill. Or Vault. Before he could say much else, a scalpel flew through the air and stuck onto the wall next to them, revealing Bullseye standing down the hall. “Shit..”
VIVIAN VISION: Vivian followed alongside the mutants as they made their way through the hospital, careful to be attentive to their surroundings. As they all rounded the corner, a scalpel was flung through the air, nearly hitting Viv in the face as it struck the wall and they were face to face with Bullseye. “We need to divide. We can’t let him keep us from the stone. Magik, Nico, I can phase us into her room? I think we’re close.”
BUCKY BARNES: "Shitty reunion." he looked over at Nat, only falling back from Taskmaster when he saw the confirmation in her steady gaze. Breaking off, he followed Bobbi up the stairs, finding no other obstacles before hitting a floor with double doors that read: Authorized Personnel Only: Intensive Care Unit. He slowed, weapon coming back around to rest in his grip. "They powered a whole town by putting a girl into a coma." he said it with a mix of disbelief and frustration. "S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't exactly convincing me they shouldn't become a government section lost to time." The room was empty when they entered, the doors clattering behind them. He wasn't sure keeping quiet had any point anymore. Gun poised, he scanned the empty beds, not even noticing the low beep of the monitor and the occupied bed because his eyes landed on Yelena, seated and scanning through...something. "Didn't I leave you in a broom closet?" he said a little breathlessly, grip tightening on the weapon.
YELENA BELOVA: Was she mad? Yes. At Bucky and Natasha? No. At S.H.I.EL.D.? Of course. At Zemo, at the situation. Yelena had been pissed when she came to in a broom closet, tossed to the side like a basic cleaning supply. She remembered Astrid Massey, but her face wasn’t her own. Bullseye had met her in the hallway. He had given her the device Zemo was passing around to his teammates, the disrupter returning her to her former form. As Benjamin headed down the  hallway to meet the ‘heroes’, Yelena moved to the ICU and found the Database. The codes were already unlocked from whatever doctor had run away mid scan from the intruders, and when the door opened Yelena glanced back over her shoulder. “Seemed more fun out here. I saw Taskmaster downstairs, but this was a better opportunity. They never let me up here. Now I know why.”
BUCKY BARNES: “Natasha is handling it.” Bucky remarked, lowering his weapon just a little bit. “I know what you’re doing, and it sucks to say this, but it isn’t helping. We can handle the database later, we need to deal with Ripley now.” he spoke pointedly at her, knowing that any form of coddling or soft spoken words didn’t apply here. Not that it ever did. Bucky could never imagine babying Yelena in any situation. “Just trust me on this.”
VIVIAN VISION: Vivian quickly grabbed onto Magik and Nico, not wasting any time as she phased the three of them past Bullseye and through to Ripley’s hospital room.
LAURA KINNEY: At his comment, the arch of a brow broke Laura’s deadpan. “Debatable taste.” She commented offhandedly. At the sight of Bullseye she crouched, lunging towards him without claws. Kwannon could follow Viv and the spellcasters. Laura had no problem being a distraction.
YELENA BELOVA: “Natasha is getting her ass handed to her. Again.” The sisters had a messy history with Taskmaster. She hit a key and the code flashed red, the page turning to a simple box for an access code. “We have to shut down the Database.” Yelena straightened up to look at him, her own gun holstered. “We can’t let them do this anymore.”
BUCKY BARNES: Bucky worked through the tic in his jaw, leveling his voice. By now, his nerves were frayed. “Do you Yelena?” he lowered the gun even more until the barrel was pointed at the floor. “Do you trust me?”
YELENA BELOVA: For a long moment, she just stared. Did she? It wasn’t easily answered. “I want to.” Yelena replied honestly. A finger hovered above the key before she moved, body tightening and constricting as she fell.
BOBBI MORSE: Running behind due to having to disable to alarms on the floor, Bobbi skidded to a stop as she lowered her stun gun. “--She was going to hit the key, right?”
YELENA BELOVA: “Fuck. You.” Yelena hissed from the ground, fingers digging into the tile as she tried to pull herself up. She wasn’t going to hit the key.
BUCKY BARNES: “Seriously?” he hissed, the metal plates clamping into place audibly as he tightened his grip. “Seriously, Bobbi?” he was pissed, clearly. “No wonder you’re a fucking S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.” Bucky snatched the stun gun from Bobbi’s grip on his way past her, throwing it to the ground and stomping on it until it was in a bunch of little pieces before he finished his walk to Yelena. “She wasn’t going to hit the fucking key.” he crouched down, helping Yelena back to her feet. “What’s next? You want to hit Ripley too? Do you more good.”
BOBBI MORSE: “Oh, c’mon.” Bobbi muttered as she had the stun gun ripped away and trampled. It wasn’t like that would have been helpful for defense or anything. “Tell me she’s not a flight risk.” Dark eyes narrowed. “I’d love to hit Ripley. Hopefully wake her up. That goddamn stone is fragmenting and destabilizing the town. If it collapses we all may be written out off reality. No happy reunion with your girlfriend then, huh?”
YELENA BELOVA: Yelena just spit towards Bobbi’s feet as James help her up, holding on to his arm even when she was upright.
BUCKY BARNES: “You think you’re the one to call that?” he shot over his shoulder, fully standing now. “Being written out of reality wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen to me this year.” he turned his attention to Yelena, looking her over but he didn’t ask her if she were okay. “You make an awful nurse, you know that?”
ILLYANA RASPUTINA: Phasing in along with Viv and Nico, Illyana stepped around the broken black shards of a weapon. “Now this is where the party is.” She laughed slightly. Making her way to the bed, dark lined eyes narrowed at the woman. Tugging the hospital gown to the side, the red glow of the Stone was flickering under the white bandages. “They said you would have another fragment. We need two.”
BOBBI MORSE: “I think I’m deepest in the shit and have used the Database before, so I made a snap judgement call. It’s not like I shot her. We talked it out.” Bobbi didn’t flinch at the spit. “Maybe not for you, but there’s a lot of other people here.”
YELENA BELOVA: “Nursing student.” Yelena muttered. “The scrubs were ugly.”
RIRI WILLIAMS: She had smashed in the window of the wrong room during her entry, but Riri found the right one after checking for heat signatures. “You have a second fragment now.” The suit’s chamber opened to expose the Reality Stone shard. “Zemo’s got the third.”
BUCKY BARNES: “They were pretty ugly.” he agreed quietly, face pinched lightly at the edges. His head whipped sharply around at Riri’s entrance, completely ignoring Bobbi at this point. “So we go get Zemo.” he took a breath. “Finally.”
ILLYANA RASPUTIN: As the armored teen guided the Stone back to its host, Magik looked to Nico. “Are you ready?” It wasn’t really a question. With eyes glowing blue, she held a hand out over the chest of Ripley. “I’m going to be very unhappy if she chooses to smite us.”
NICO MINORU: Nico looked down at the incubated woman, trying her best not to be intimidated by the thought of all that could go wrong as she adjusted her grip on her staff and nodded. She looked towards Riri as she entered the room and smiled in relief at the sight of another stone. “Okay, yeah. Ready.” She agreed as she gripped her staff and held her other hand over Ripley to follow Magik. “Stabilize.” The staff emitted a glow as she focused herself onto the spell.
YELENA BELOVA: “Jim. What a nice young man.” Yelena scoffed. She paused, softening slightly as she turned to face Bucky fully. “Thank you.” Her tone was composed of genuine relief. Rising up to reach his face, Yelena pressed a chaste kiss to his lips. “I do trust you.”
BOBBI MORSE: Determined to focus on the spell, Bobbi’s face twitched at Yelena and Bucky. Worse than high schoolers.
ILLYANA RASPUTIN: Drawing on Limbo, Illyana closed her eyes when she heard Nico’s staff and began chanting. Confirma. Stabiliendum. Solidatur. Est una tribus, tribus fit unum. Dormammu limbo ex angulis eminebant de profundis et frugibus suis circum nos, ut tecum una. As she repeated Wanda’s words, the red began to glow and overtake the room. It burned so brightly that it overtook the space and ate everything else out entirely.
BUCKY BARNES: With his ungloved hand, bucky cupped the side of Yelena’s face. “I know.” he heard Illyana and Nico behind him but he didn’t look. He had a gut feeling where this was going and he was just…relieved to see Yelena again. It tugged somewhere deep in his chest, making him oddly angry all over again. He was exhausted, frustrated, but relieved. “Also, please don’t ever mention Jim again.” he said on what sounded like a breathy laugh. “C’mere.” Even though they didn’t do this, Bucky pulled Yelena in close, arms wrapping around her small frame.
NICO MINORU: Confirma. Stabiliendum. Solidatur. Est una tribus, tribus fit unum. Dormanmu limbo ex angulis emine ant de profundis et frugibus suis circum nos, ut tecum una. Nico repeated alongside Magik, closing her eyes as the red glow overtook the entire room. Based on that, she hoped it was working. And she also hoped that they wouldn’t kill Ripley in the process.
YELENA BELOVA: Folding into him, Yelena stared at the two spellcasters. She hated magic. She hated how small it made her feel. She didn’t like Ripley either, but they all deserved better than this. “He was a victim too, at first.” The light was too bright then and Yelena had no choice but to avert her eyes.
RIPLEY RYAN: Every memory. Every life. Every backstory. The Town Database was comprehensive and the woman whose energy fueled it remembered every detail. For the first time since they had managed to restrain her, the stirrings of magic gave way to an elevated form of consciousness. Eyes and mouth open, red poured from them until reality was rattled by a burst of energy. Across the town, those left reverted to how they had looked before being changed. Faces returned and scarlet gave way to familiar bodies and clothes. When the wave washed over the hospital, it faded to reveal a blonde in a hospital gown standing in front of the mangled computer system. “I’m going to kill someone.”
LAURA KINNEY: The fight with Bullseye had ended, but Laura followed the scent of blood towards where the Black Widow and Taskmaster had fought. Natasha was fine, her adversary fleeing towards Zemo and the Town hall. When the redhead said she would follow him, Laura had left her to get to the ICU. Without her claws the fight had been a little different than she preferred, but not all of the blood on her was her own. By the time she got there, the room was awash in red. The force of the energy impact threw Laura against the wall, but when she straightened and came to, her cheerleading uniform was gone. The yellow and blue of her Wolverine suit had returned and when she flexed her hands she felt the adamantium.
BOBBI MORSE: Ripley looked mad, but Bobbi couldn’t blame her. She had every right to be. “That’s valid.” She limbed to her feet. “But can we raincheck? Your Stone -- it fractured. From what was being done. We got you a piece on it, but Zemo has a shard at Town Hall. Do I need to tell you how badly this could go?”
RIPLEY RYAN: Of course she didn’t need to. Ripley could feel Pleasant Hill destabilizing and reality growing thin. It Zemo accomplished his goals, he’d be taking her down. It was hard to live with a stone in your chest. it would be impossible to be fragmented. Even then, she could feel the other part calling out. Raising a hand, Ripley looked at the group. TOWN HALL. With that, the hospital was empty as they vanished in a flash of crimson.

Part 8
When Erik's eyes opened, his head was foggy.. smashed into the bed.. and Frankie Beverly was blasting out the common room. He raised his chin before dropping it with a deep sigh. This nigga, he thought. Goddamn.. What time was it?
"CHRIS," he yelled getting no answer other than a loud "BEFORE I LET YOU GOOOOOOOO!"
"Mothafucka," he grumbled eyes shut and grunting as he couldn't sleep with all the noise. Throwing himself onto his feet, he nearly tripped over his boots left standing near the bed in his jeans. Kicking them out the way, he marched out the room turning the corner as he scratched his bare chest.  "You know what time it is?!"
"Yeah, it's 12:48 PM in the afternoon," Brit said from the small couch as Chris looked up, looking stupid. "Good afternoon Sleeping Beauty." Erik hadn't even seen her sitting there, but there she was.. in one of Chris' bigass shirts and sweatpants. Erik looked down finding himself ass naked, dick hanging on soft. Her eyes followed his, scanning him before settling on his eyes, humored.
"Stop looking at my dick."
She smirked. "You were fucked up last night do you remember anything?"
"I remember you," he grinned still feeling fuzzy. One thing he knew for sure.. he'd gotten Fucked. Up. "Why you got his shit on?"
"One, you were sleep so I couldn't ask you. Two, do you own anything that would fit me?"
He pouted. She had a good point.
"Breakfast?" Her brow arched in a reminder.
"SHIT," he gasped suddenly remembering he was a human being with a life. He grabbed his head. "Why you ain't wake me up?"
"Tuh! I tried. You were like a damn log," her shoulders shook in a small chuckle.
Meanwhile, Chris danced with a bag of chips and a coke.
"Sit ya happy ass down somewhere," Erik frowned, half-serious and rolling his eyes when Brit put up a disciplinary finger. He sighed. "Wait for me, I'm a take a quick shower and I'll be ready in fifteen."
Turning the corner, he could hear them talking low and snickering. He stuck his head back out and their eyes both went to him at the same time, Brit snickering again.
"What's so funny RED," he challenged.
"YOU, nigga. Breakfast over, me and Chris already went, it's lunch time."
"Y'all went without me?" His face froze in disappointment.
"Look..," Chris mumbled walking over with his phone to show him a video of them trying to wake him up. Chris had yelled Erik's name super loud and Brit climbed over top0 him in the bed, dressed in Chris' clothes as she cackled at the fact that Erik was still snoring.
"Put some damn clothes on," she laughed.
"You the one keep lookin at my dick." She kept looking at it like she wanted it.
"You asked me to stay and I'm here.. as you requested. But I got shit to do and I'm hungry so LET'S GOOO," she clapped. "Get your ass in the showerrr! Let's move!"
"...You lucky you fine," he warned turning to hit the shower. He was used to showering fast, with as much work as he'd taken on this year. Early, long, full days of school, tutoring, group assignments, homework, Omega meetups, and he had to get his workouts in too. In fact, based on the time... he had an appointment to tutor a few people back to back in a couple hours. Work hard, play hard was the motto. Dashing from the shower, he dried himself quickly and threw on a purple t-shirt he thrifted with grey joggers and Jordan's. He'd been rocking these same Jordans faithfully since 11th grade.
"Aye, you ready," he called heading to the door. Standing, she was right behind him and he looked at Chris who'd gotten up to come. "Fuck you going, this ain't that kinda party."
"Erik.. it's the caf I gotta go too."
"Leave first then." Ignoring Brit's face, Erik watched Chris roll his eyes, shake his head, and head out. "...What? ...He ain't walking with us." He smacked her ass as she walked through the door. He could get used to that jiggle.
The stroll to the caf was lighter as Erik was able to breathe fresh air, move, and make conversation with one of his new favorite people. He took his time next to her, rubbing his hands together as he plotted in his mind new ways to flirt with her.
"I'm dressed so bummy, I can't wait to get into my own clothes."
"Last night was wild wasn't it," he grinned. He didn't remember it all but he knew he'd had fun.
"YOU were wild last night," she amended. "You know you ran around the party butt naked with a purple dick?!"
"Purple and gold," he corrected. Of course he remembered. He'd planned it while sober. "You got a lil wild too," he smiled side-eyeing her. "I saw you tryna dance.."
"Trying? No, boo. I'm a dancer," she snapped playfully.
"You better at kissing," he smirked leading the way into the caf as she rolled her eyes.
It was inevitable. They couldn't just eat and be alone because people kept coming over to talk to them, separately and together. Erik started to get irritated at the third interruption.. Her line sister came to greet her and wouldn't leave. Erik stared at Brit who glanced back obviously reading his mind and finding it funny.
"What you expect," she smiled watching his annoyance. "Between the two of us we know half the people at this school."
"We need privacy."
"That's what dates are for," she quipped, still smirking.. She was waiting for him to ask her out on one, but for some reason he couldn't bring himself to do it. That was when James from one of Erik's classes approached asking for tutoring.
"Pay me," Erik shrugged. "Guaranteed A if you listen and study like I tell you." It was easy money.
Brit looked at her phone and finished the food on her tray, picking it up as she stood. "I'll get with you, aight? I gotta meet someone for a project."
"Wait, why you leaving?" He frowned looking up for her to sit back down. He wasn't done vibin.
"I just told you and I wanna change my clothes."
He kissed his teeth. "Aight, well, call me."
"When I have time..."
Erik was taken aback. That was already a given, so for her to say it meant she was purposely gonna wait. Why? He decided to give her a little more incentive standing to follow her out. He ain't wanna do what he had planned right in the caf.
"Where you going," her brow raised seeing him behind her in her peripheral vision. He grabbed her waist, turning her to face him before holding her face in his hands and laying a fat kiss on her soft lips that lasted a good moment.
"What was that for," she breathed, looking up with soft eyes.
"Felt like kissing you," he shrugged backing up. "Call me," he pointed heading back to the caf. That should've been good enough to make her call quick, but she didn't and he'd waited lowkey. Everytime someone hit his phone he was annoyed because it was the wrong number. So he called her one afternoon when he was in need of sexual relief.. but according to her she was busy. Aight, fine.. He called her a couple days later getting the same response. That was bullshit and she was lying. What the fuck was going on? She didn't want dick?
After a week passed by with no contact, he decided to pop up on her in the criminal justice building. All it took was to ask around and he found her in a computer lab, sitting in the empty seat beside her at her computer. She kept typing unaware until she looked over and nearly jumped from her skin.
"DON'T DO THAT."
"Why you been ignoring me lately."
"I haven't been ignoring you, I said I was busy."
"Bullshit, you make time for what you want to make time for."
"Why you sweating me so hard? You're not my man. You won't even ask me on a date."
It clicked. "That's what this is about. Look, you want another date, fine."
"Tuh. Not with that attitude," she scoffed. "I can have anyone I want, you better step to me like you know."
Erik's brows rose. Engine RED, that bitch that made him want to work for it was rearing her head.
"Look-"
"Bye Erik," she waved flicking her wrist like he was a damn fly. He was shocked.. but also entertained and strangely turned on. Smirking at her profile as she purposely ignored him, he decided to gone and ask.
"Ms. RED," he whispered laughing silently to himself when she ignored him again. "Fine chocolate ass.." She was gonna make him really be serious. Containing himself, he looked at her, she was still typing.. some assignment. "Aight... Brittany... You're absolutely right and I would love it if you let me enjoy the pleasure of your company this upcoming weekend."
"Where we going?"
"Where you want?"
"Don't ask me that if you don't have money. I'm being gracious by letting you plan it around your price point."
"You right," he spoke honestly. "I'll plan it out and call you with the details."
"Mhm."
He smirked. She definitely knew how to get what she wanted from him. Now he wanted something from her in the meantime.
"Can I kiss you?"
"Go ahead," she mumbled, fingers never ceasing on the keyboard. He leaned forward and kissed her smoothly on the cheek, feeling light.
"What you doing today?"
"I have a date."
"With who?" His eyes widened. He didn't expect that."
"I don't think you know him."
"Try me."
"Habib Eze."
She was right, he didn't know him. Damn. Niggas moved fast. He wondered how many times she'd seen this Habib and if she was dodging him to meet that nigga. She wasn't doing anything wrong.. he just didn't expect it.. nor did he like it. She was serious about these damn dates. "Damn.. well I'll still get at you for this weekend," he said feeling like a simp as he left her.
A thought crossed his mind. He couldn't afford to take her on a million dates, he had shit to pay for. However, if he made her his girl.. he wouldn't have to put up cash so constantly. But if he did that, would he have to be loyal? Would she trip over that? She would. It would get ugly. Dating was out of the question for now.
Crossing campus, Erik met a familiar set of eyes and she double-taked walking in his direction to slide her fingers along his forearm. He recognized her as one of the girls he danced on at the party, but she looked a little more put together now.
"Heey," she smiled leaning into him for a hug before stepping back. "Fun night, when's the next one?"
"Three weeks, gimme your number I'll send you the info." Pulling out his phone, he took her number catching her hints that he could call her for sex as well. He'd have to think about that, but in the meantime she was touching his arm so he flirted back. Then she moved her arm and casually put her hand on his dick. He stared at her like she was crazy but she didn't get the memo. He had to move her hand off. "I'll call you," he nodded walking off. He didn't plan to.
When Brit called it was Thursday and Erik was shocked. He'd just left class. But then she asked him to meet her in the library and he figured it was on some 'using him' shit. He was right. She needed help.
"Hey," she smiled greeting him. "Thanks for meeting with me and I'm willing to compensate you for your time. I know you tutor in multiple subjects and you know a lot about the law. Could you help me with this?" She showed him her assignment and he read the directions, catching where her confusion would be. Sighing, he decided to help her. He had a little time and spent it explaining as much as he could and giving her shit to write down. It wasn't as much time as she'd needed for him to help her finish, but she wasn't dumb she could figure the rest out on her own.
"Erik.."
"Hm?" He was too absorbed in her books to look at her.
"You ever have a girlfriend?"
He paused looking up before closing the book solemnly. "Hell nah.... Why?"
"Forget it."
"You wanna be my girlfriend?" He was stunned.
"No." She looked away and he caught the glimpse of a paper in her bag... it was marked with a 92% in bright red pen. He looked at the book in his hand and dropped it on the table with a sigh.
"What you want from me..."
"I don't want anything from you," she's shrugged but that was a lie.
"You don't need my help." He snatched the graded paper and held it up. "You doing just fine. I'll ask you again... what you want from me? Why you really call me?"
She stood grapping her stuff to pack it up but he took her bag to halt her, commanding eye contact.
"Ain't no Habib," he stated calling her bluff. Her silence was proof. "You be lying," he pointed.
"Because you're an idiot! We been flirting back and forth and it takes all of this for you to ask me out. All those book smarts and you can't think to be honest. So to not waste our time, I sped things up! YOU'RE WELCOME."
Erik stared, understanding it all. Yeah, he was stubborn and always tryna see what he could get... He could've still done without the lying.
"Oh get over yourself," she frowned snatching her bag back and stuffing her books back into it. She stormed off and for a second Erik let her before he decided to give chase. He was able to catch up easily since she hadn't gotten far.
"So this whole time you been plotting on me."
"Worked didn't it." She had no shame as she strutted.
"You know I ain't fucked no one since we started fuckin," he side-eyed. "How the fuck you do that?"
"Voodoo," she smirked causing him to raise a brow before she stopped walking to face him.
"This ass... It's voodoo," she smirked and his face cracked as looked off fighting a smile.
"Lame ass." He walked her back to her place, taking it slow and she asked him about the tutoring session he was missing. He wasn't thinking about them, they could miss one session. He had more pressing matters. Getting Brit into the bed for one. Now that he knew she was lying about another nigga, he knew she was feeling him and feening. He still couldn't see himself dating exclusively, but he could see himself inside of her guts and for now that's what Ms. Engine RED would have to deal with.
The End
