On September 27th, 2001, Filippo Simeoni soloed clear of a breakaway on Stage 18 of the Vuelta a España. As he approached the line (around 2:30 or so in the above video), he took the unusual step of dismounting his bike, holding it aloft, and kissing the top-tube before walking across.

He was fined for this—and this is where we enter the apocrypha so endemic to pretty much everything in professional cycling. Wikipedia, uncited, claims the UCI was involved, and fined him despite the fact that the gesture was somehow a “tribute to the victims” of the 9-11 attacks.

However, the admittedly tiny sliver of primary sources available to me makes no mention of this. VeloNews’ report focuses on breaking the drought of Italian wins at the event. Cyclingnews had a blurb reporting on the fine following day, but attributes it to the race organization, not the UCI, and quotes Simeoni explaining the unorthodox salute: “It's my best-ever win and I thought I'd give the crowd something to remember me by”. No mention of September 11.

Fast-forward to July a few years later. Simeoni has a dust-up with a certain Lance Armstrong over testifying against Michele Ferrari two years earlier. It’s an objectively terrible look for Lance, but if you haven’t learned by now that support for public figures is more tribal than rational, I don’t know what to tell you. But I do know that having counter-narrative, some dimension to Simeoni to make him more than just another of Lance’s Euro-antagonists, would be an extremely useful thing to the growing legion of fans who were sick and tired of the Texan.

And the very next month, as the sort of unfounded opinion you’d expect from such a predominantly old, white, and male fanbase was flying, a letter appeared in Cyclingnews, quoting Simeoni, in an alleged post-race interview from that 2001 Vuelta stage, as saying "The gesture of raising my bike above my head was also meant as a protest against the terrorist's attacks in New York.” In October of that year, Simeoni’s first Wikipedia entry appears, also pushing the 9-11 Tribute.

It spreads as these things do—forum posts, blogs, etc—pretty much anywhere outside the professional cycling press, which would have been extremely reluctant to raise Armstrong’s ire at that time. No matter that the BBC article cited in those forum posts contains nothing even suggesting a Twin Towers remembrance—it’s the line I’d always heard, passed along by Lance haters and long-time Euro cycling fans alike, a badge of knowledge that a deeper sport existed beyond the even-then-cliched prattle of Phil and Paul.

But was it real? Does it make any sense that an Italian rider in a Spanish race would feel compelled to dedicate a win to the victims of a terrorist attack in the US two weeks earlier? Wouldn’t the rider have mentioned this to American journalist Andrew Hood, covering the Vuelta for American publication VeloNews, in his post-race commentary? Wouldn’t he have at least brought it up as justification when fined for the unusual display?

Like so many of cycling’s war stories, it’s almost impossible to know. Truth and fiction have always blended easily in a sport built to craft narratives to sell papers. And as a digitally-based Anglophone, it’s a particular challenge—the only thing I can find even close to a citation for the September 11 tribute comes from Simeoni’s Italian Wikipedia page: page 20 of the 28 September 2001 edition of the defunct Italian paper, L’Unità.

I hope you slept well and have woken full of the joys of summer… The meteors are quite beautiful this morning, I stood and watched with Bella as streaks of fire zipped across the night sky, then together we walked back to the house, Bella thinking about the cookie I promised her and me looking forward to the fresh Colombian Coffee that was brewing while we walked, it’s 3 years ago that we lost Sadie and almost 5 years since Mackie left us, but I believe they still walk the town with us in the mornings……So before I start getting all maudlin on us, let’s take a look at what’s happened in this mixed up world we call Earth….

DRUG TUNNEL RAN FROM OLD KFC IN ARIZONA TO MEXICO BEDROOM…. US authorities have found a secret drug tunnel stretching from a former KFC in the state of Arizona to Mexico. The 600ft (180m) passageway was in the basement of the old restaurant in San Luis, leading under the border to a home in San Luis Rio Colorado. Authorities made the discovery last week and have arrested the southern Arizona building's owner. They were alerted to the tunnel after the suspect, Ivan Lopez, was pulled over, according to KYMA News. During the traffic stop, police dogs reportedly led officers to two containers of hard narcotics with a street value of more than $1m in Lopez's vehicle. Investigators say the containers held 118kg (260lb) of methamphetamine, six grams of cocaine, 3kg of fentanyl, and 21kg of heroin. Agents searched Lopez's home and his old KFC, discovering the tunnel's entrance in the kitchen of the former fast-food joint. The passageway was 22ft deep, 5ft tall and 3ft wide, and ended at a trap door under a bed in a home in Mexico, said US officials. The drugs are believed to have been pulled up through the tunnel with a rope. This is not the first such discovery - two years ago a 2,600ft tunnel was found by authorities in San Diego, California. Authorities said it was one of the longest such drug tunnels ever discovered, used to transport an "unprecedented cache" of cocaine and marijuana. In July alone, US Border Patrol seized 15kg of heroin, 24lbs of cocaine, 327kg of methamphetamine and 1,900kg of marijuana at border checkpoints nationwide… Comment: Now we know what the “Secret” ingredient is in the Col’s recipe…..

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION 'CONSIDERS FUNDING GUNS IN SCHOOLS'…. The Trump administration is considering allowing schools to access federal education funding to purchase guns for teachers, US media report. The Department of Education (DoE) is looking at allowing states to use academic enrichment funds for firearms, the New York Times first reported. The federal grant being considered for this purpose is one that does not specifically prohibit buying weapons. Congress forbids using federal funds for school safety to purchase weapons. DoE spokeswoman Elizabeth Hill told CBS News: "The department is constantly considering and evaluating policy issues, particularly issues related to school safety." "The secretary nor the department issues opinions on hypothetical scenarios," she added… Comment: I cannot think of a more irresponsible action on behalf of a government…

AUSTRIA REJECTS 'GIRLISH' IRAQI ASYLUM SEEKER…. Austrian officials rejected an Iraqi migrant's asylum application because he was too "girlish", local media say. The 27-year-old's claim to be gay was deemed "unbelievable", in part due to his behaviour, according to reports. He can appeal against the decision. It comes just days after Amnesty International criticised Austria's asylum processes as "dubious". The government has hit back at the criticism, saying its asylum officials work appropriately. In the latest case, the Iraqi asylum seeker was felt to exhibit "stereotypical, in any case excessive 'girlish' behaviour (expressions, gestures)", which seemed fake, Austria's Kurier newspaper reported. Said to be an active member in local LGBT groups, he is understood to have fled Iraq in 2015, fearing for his life. However a spokesman for Austria's asylum office said the decision had been reviewed, and rejected the accusation it contained any "clichéd phrasing" by officials in Styria state, Kurier added. It is the second controversial asylum case in recent days. Last week, activists said that an 18-year-old Afghan asylum seeker had his application rejected because he did not "act or dress" like a homosexual. "The inhuman language in asylum claims does not conform with the requirements of a fair, rule-of-law procedure," Amnesty International said in a report. Interior Ministry spokesman Christoph Poelzl also rejected the accusation officials used "inhuman" language, telling news agency AFP that all employees who assess asylum claims receive training. However, the official involved in the Afghan asylum seeker's case is no longer involved in assessing applications, he added. Austria is currently run by a coalition of the conservative People's Party and the far-right Freedom Party, which came to power following an election dominated by Europe's migrant crisis last year. Comment: Immigration should not be based on “Sexual Preference” especially when determined by the “Far Right” party…

CHINA ARRESTS OVER TANG DYNASTY RELIC THEFTS…. Chinese police have arrested 26 people suspected of stealing relics from an ancient burial site. The gang allegedly seized almost 650 objects, including gold and silver cutlery and jewellery, from the Dulan Tombs, which lie on the ancient Silk Road in northwest China. The stolen items date back to the 7th Century, the Chinese Ministry of Public Security said in a statement. The suspects allegedly tried to sell them for about $11m (£7.8m). The objects were said to have been illegally excavated from the tombs, located in the north-western province of Qinghai. Silk, gold, silver, bronze ware and other items have been unearthed at the tombs, of which there are more than 2,000, since 1982. Experts believe that many of the items are of huge historical value as they show cultural exchanges and interactions between East and West during the early Tang Dynasty (618-907). Following the arrests, police will increase their crackdown on cultural relics crimes to better protect the country's cultural heritage, the Chinese government said. INDIA'S 'BIGGEST' PET RESCUE OPERATION IN KERALA FLOODS…. When rescuers in India's flood-ravaged southern state of Kerala reached a flooded hut in the city of Thrissur, the couple living there refused to leave without their 25 dogs. The water was rising, and the dogs were huddled on a single bed. The rescue workers had arrived on boats, and Sunitha, who uses only one name, flatly told them she and her husband would not leave without their stray and abandoned pets. "Our neighbours had been moved to schools and camps nearby. Rescue workers said that we could not bring our dogs to the relief camp," she said. So the workers went back and got in touch with an animal rescue group. Sally Varma of Humane Society International told the BBC that their volunteers arrived soon, and arranged for the dogs to be taken to a special shelter for affected animals. Ms Varma said she has started a fundraiser for the family and its pets so a kennel could be built at their home after the floods recede. Nearly 400 people have died in the worst flooding Kerala has witnessed in a century. Thousands remain stranded. More than one million people have been displaced, with many of them taking shelter in thousands of relief camps across the state. But what is striking is how hundreds of animals are being rescued in the affected areas. In what appears to be one of the biggest animal rescue operations during a natural calamity in India, hundreds of volunteers and animal rescue workers have travelled to flood-affected areas. Social media is awash with dramatic rescue videos: a rescuer removing his life jacket and putting it on a Labrador to help it swim to higher ground; drenched dogs being taken out of flooded homes and kennels; and country boats and inflatable rafts carrying dogs, goats and cats to safety. Rescuers have waded through water, and travelled on boats and rafts to treat, feed and rescue hundreds of animals - dogs, cats, goats, cows, cattle, ducks, and even snakes - as the waters have begun receding. Trucks with animal feed and medicines are reaching affected districts. Some animals have been moved to shelter camps, and others to higher ground. A number of animal rescue help lines have been set up, and rescuers are using WhatsApp and social media to respond to calls. "We are getting more than 100 calls a day on our helpline. The number of animals that have been moved to higher ground and rescued must be in hundreds," Anand Shiva of Kerala Animal Rescue said.

Asia’s largest tulip garden, which has about 12.5 lakh tulips of 50 varieties in its lap on the banks of world famous Dal Lake in the summer capital, Srinagar, marked the beginning of new tourism season in the Valley.

You don’t know you’re alive until you’re almost dead. Chapter Zero. Genesis.

Year 2061. July first. Yellowstone national park. Yellowstone Caldera.

The earth heaved and shook. The groundwater was made toxic by the sulphuric gasses that pushed up through the earths crust. The wildlife began leaving the increasingly inhospitable area, almost as if they knew what was to come.

Humanity had been warned, but wouldn't listen. Thankfully, the earth remained calm for now.

Year 2114. December 21st. 9:00 pm Friday. Northern Sweden.

31 year old Lars Karlsson, advanced physicist at I.a.c.e. (Institute for advancement of clean energy) had fallen asleep on the couch. They had left Stockholm 06:30 in the morning, and driven for 11 hours, to their cabin at lake Hornavan, just north of Arjeplog, for a 14 day Christmas holiday. His 26-year old wife Lena, pharmacologist and yoga instructor, was singing and dancing to the kitchen radio, while fixing some snacks. She looked out the window at the raging snowstorm, and was thankful to be home. On a clear day she could see the village where she was born and raised. And she was thankful to be out of the noisy, dirty capital for the first time all year. She put her hands on her growing stomach and smiled. "Thirteen more weeks till I can see you two." She couldn't wait to be a mom and show them all her favorite spots in the mountains.

She put away the bags with chips and candy, closed the pantry and the dishwasher, and reached for the bowl on the counter. She gasped and grasped for the edge of the counter as a sharp stabbing pain radiated out from her stomach.

Lars awoke to his wife screaming his name. "LAAAARS!" He stumbled into the dining room, his wife stood in the doorway to the kitchen, her grey sweatpants were stained dark red down the inside of both her legs. He froze. He didn't know what to do! "Could you possibly call 112 Lars? NOOW!" Her screeching voice jolted him into action. He fumbled desperately with his phone. He misdailed 112 three times before he got it right. Lena felt something warm slowly running down her legs. She didn't look, knowing full well what it was but she didn't want to see. She had to keep calm, she closed her eyes and thought of her babies. Seconds felt like hours. A woman answered and she heard "what's your emergency?" Lars stuttered, made some strange noises and couldn't form a single word, let alone a sentence. "Give me the phone Lars." He held it out towards her, across the entire dining room. Her patience had its limits tested. "Come here with it, please, Lars." He was not good in high stress situations. "Hello?" Said the voice on the phone. "Hi, I'm Lena Karlsson, we're up at Hornavan, I'm 29 weeks along with twins, and I just had a bleed. A big one." She listened intently to the woman on the other end, explaining that the helicopter couldn't fly in the storm, and the closest delivery room was at least 3 hours away on a good day. "Well we don't have a choice do we? I can't do this alone, and my husband is completely useless right now." Lars looked at her and nodded in agreement. "We'll get there, one way or another." She hung up the phone, her mind racing. She knew time was of the essence, but her fear kept getting in the way of her reasoning. She knew she had to solve this. Normally, their cabin was perfect in her mind, there wasn't even much of a road leading up to it. Their 4x4 Jeep had barely made it up to the cabin. That would probably get stuck in the snow somewhere. In the shed outside sat the Yamaha 360 Propulse snowmobile they bought last year. It was definitely fast enough. On flat hard snow it would do 140 mph. They'd be there in 80 minutes at that speed. Or crash and die horribly. Stay here and die for sure? Or save her babies? There was no doubt in her mind. "Lars, go start the snowmobile." He nodded and hurried out the door. Lena went to the hallway and opened the closet. Gloves, overalls, boots, helmets. Everything was where it should be. She heard the high pitched whine of the Yamaha turbine spooling up. Thank god the battery wasn't dead. She got out of her bloodied pants, put on the insulating inner suit, and stepped in the overall. Lars came back in. "It's just outside the door." "Good, get dressed." He didn't even think, he just did what he was told. He helped her with her zipper and helmet, then closed his own. They stepped out into the snowstorm looking like two inflated racing drivers.

Lars climbed on the front seat of the snowmobile. "Are you sure you want to drive?" She shouted over the wind and the idling turbine. He thought for a second, then scooted backwards. She climbed on carefully, and sat down as slow as she could. She wasn't in extreme pain, but she didn't want to push it. She put the dead mans grip on her wrist, turned on the lights and the heat in the handle and seats. She put it in gear and started the descent down the steep mountainside. She had picked this one for its superior handling in deep snow and long range. It's turbine engine used so little fuel they hadn't even filled it up last year, it had just under half a tank left. She hoped it would be enough. She steered carefully past the trees that marked their path down, winding slowly down to the main road. When the path ended she couldn't see the road, but she saw that there were no trees. She turned it in the right direction and pressed her thumb down hard on the throttle.

360 horsepower of supercharged nitrogen turbine erupted into life, propelling them forward so hard she almost lost her grip on the handlebars. Lars who couldn't really see anything wasn't ready and almost fell off. He was scared out of his mind, but Lena only thought of her babies. A stray thought crossed her mind as she saw the needle pass 120 mph. If we crash now, we won't even have time to feel it. We'll just be dead. She didn't look at the speedometer again.

Five days later, December 27th, Lena and Lars waited for the doctor to discharge her and the babies. Lars had fueled the snowmobile the day before and bought a sled to transport their babies in. He had been ambushed at the gas station by a reporter that had heard of the story about the speed demon mom on a quest to save her twins. They were in the papers today. After a quick chat with the doctor they we're on their way out to the parking lot, where the same reporter wanted an interview with Lena as well. She kindly declined, with a long journey ahead of them, she just wanted to go home.

"Please," he begged, "just one picture?" She looked at Lars. "Sure." he replied.

Lena held the boy, and Lars held the girl. "Have you decided any names yet?" Lena nodded and looked at her son. "Erik." Lars nodded and looked at his baby girl. "Sophia?" He looked to Lena. She nodded approvingly. "Sophia."

"I WOULD DEFINITELY CALL THAT A WINDFALL" "I thought you'd appreciate hearing from one of your clients about something positive during the pandemic! I wondered "Windfall, what windfall?!?" I had a couple of weeks with 50% less workload and consequently 50% less income in my work as a contractor, and that was after PPP funds had dried up. . . BUT! Within just a couple of weeks, applications were being accepted again, and I was approved. That same week, a paycheck that had still been missed after I'd asked about it three times and not receiving payment for an entire month was finally sent to me. An insurance check that I'd been waiting on since late January was finally resolved and the lost check reissued and received. I was able to file for unemployment hassle-free because of the reduction in work, and then my work started picking back up after only 2 weeks of the drop in work. I would definitely call that a windfall and a result of the Luck Switches bonus call with that purchase. Fast forward to today when I received a call about monies that I didn't even realize I had through a county program for a business startup. Evidently, there was a balance remaining that was actually 4x the amount shown on paper, and I should've spent it by last year, but the program director phoned and let me know he was granting extra time to do that and to "go shopping" for my business! Wow. I've never felt pressured to spend money before! What I notice most after having attended the Abundance/Supercharging Abundance, Luck, Breakthrough/Plandemic Switches, and I'm sure even more so after next week's Work/Life Switches call, is that I'm not worried. I truly feel more and more fortunate and abundant in my blessings, monetary and otherwise. 6O7O SOMALIA DXPEDITION NEWS (Update). Ken, LA7GIA, reports [edited]: “I will QRV from Somalia Sept. 14th to Sept. 28th on all bands 160-10m mainly on CW. Activity on other modes (SSB, FT8) will be limited and on 1-2 bands only. This trip has proved to be very difficult to plan, but finally after 3 site visits all details are sorted out. I have all permits in hand – and look forward to returning to Somalia after 18 months. I will particularly focus on working NA this time, as well low bands. I have some good vertical low band antennas, and some good RX antennas. The RX antennas will hopefully be located far away from noise sources. There will be a guard protecting the beverages 24/7. Please follow my instructions when it comes to calling for geographical areas. Because there is a very short opening to NA on low bands, in particular western part of NA. If there is propagation I will only call for NA when we approach my sunrise. EU will have the best conditions and shall try to work me during their evening time on low bands. Please carefully note the QSO and QSL policy mentioned on my Web page. Free&fast LoTW is only for the good first class operators who can follow the QSO policy and DX code of conduct. 8A74, INDONESIA (Special Event). Members of the Organisasi Amatir Radio Indonesia (ORARI) will be active as 8A74RI/# (0-9, Provinces/Call Areas) between August 28th and September 1st. Activity is to celebrate the 74th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia. QSL via ORARI National QSL Bureau or LoTW.

C5, THE GAMBIA. Don, G3XTT, will once again be active as C56DF from The Gambia, but this time in CQWW DX CW Contest (November 23-24th). Look for operation before and maybe after the contest. Activity will be on various bands, probably all CW like last time using low power (IC-7300 and wires) from a rooftop apartment. He will, of course, upload logs to LoTW and ClubLog, but possibly only after his return to the UK. QSL direct to Don’s home callsign or via ClubLog’s OQRS.

D4, CAPE VERDE (Update/Satellite Op). Harald, DF2WO, will once again be active as D44TWO from Praia, Santiago Island (AF-005), between September 29th and October 13th. Activity will be holiday style on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB and the Digital modes. He states that he works mostly on the Digital modes (FT8, PSK31, JT65 and RTTY) and slow CW. It was reported this past week that “he has been working hard in the last few months getting his Satellite station working and is now confident he will use it from Cabo Verde. He will be using an Icom 7300, 2 Transverters with 3 watts output on ES-Hail using the QO-100 Geostationary Satellite.” He will also have a FT-450D into a homemade HEX BEAM and a dipole for 40 meters. DXCC, VUCC, & ARRL CONTESTS (Now Prohibit Automated Contacts!). From the ARRL Web page: Following the direction of the ARRL Board of Directors, ARRL has incorporated changes to the rules for all ARRL-sponsored contests and DXCC, prohibiting automated contacts. These changes also apply to the Worked All States (including Triple Play and 5-Band WAS), VHF/UHF Century Club, and Fred Fish, W5FF, Memorial awards. The changes are effective immediately. A resolution at the July ARRL Board of Directors meeting pointed to “growing concern over fully automated contacts being made and claimed” for contest and DXCC credit. The rules now require that each claimed contact include contemporaneous direct initiation by the operator on both sides of the contact. Initiation of a contact may be either local or remote. FT8 OPERATING SUGGESTIONS. Dean, 8P6SH/8P2K, has recently been very active on FT8 from St.Philip, and states, “Its been very interesting but also somewhat frustrating. I thought I would share a few thoughts on working DX from a DX perspective. After working quite a few stations on FT8 over the past couple months, I thought I would share a few thoughts on working DX on HF: 1. When you’re calling a DX station on HF is the grid that important? Many times it’s not a bad idea to go with “XX0DX W1ZZ 01” This is especially important when signal levels are low – -20db and below. The grid information is generally redundant and will be confirmed on LoTW anyway. In the typical ‘pile-up’ that I get on the band, I try to work the stations that send a signal report first as these QSOs are shorter.

2. Do not call a DX station on its transmit frequency. Often I have 4 or 5 DX stations all calling on the same frequency and then, even with perfect conditions I’m sending repeat after repeat and seemingly getting nowhere. Find a clear frequency and call.

3. Know when you can log the station. Many times I am working a station and I have gotten a “RRR” or “RR73” from the other station. I either send a CQ or work the next station, only to get the station who had sent a confirmation sending a grid or report to initiate a QSO. I believe this is because I have not sent a “73” message. Those of us who have worked other modes for years know that “73” is optional. Please log the station once you have sent a report, received a report and received some kind of confirmation. That final “73” is ok, but usually from a DX station working through a list of 6 stations it is very much optional.

4. Hope these pointers are taken in the spirit they are given – to help you get into the log quicker! THANKS.”

NCDXF PRESS RELEASE (NCDXF Issues grants to two upcoming DXpeditions). [Dated August 23rd, edited] — The Northern California DX Foundation (NCDXF) is pleased to announce grants issued to two Pacific DXpedition teams for Summer 2019.

1. The 2019 Western Kiribati (T30L) and Nauru (C21W) DXpeditions slated for September have been granted $5,000 from NCDXF. Team Leader Yuris, YL2GM, has assembled another high-energy team to activate these two islands in an exciting back-to-back operation in September. One of the operators is Kristers, YL3JA, a 21-year old first-timer and future WRTC 2022 hopeful.

2. The upcoming ZK3A DXpedition slated for October 2019 has been issued a $4,000 from NCDXF using a new grant matching program. To encourage more European club participation in early funding raising efforts for DXpedition teams, NCDXF pledged $2,000 up-front to the ZK3A DXpedition team and also offered to “match” up to an additional $2,000 in pre-trip funded grants obtained from any EU DX Clubs or Foundations. We are happy to report that this new grant-matching plan worked well as the ZK3A team has received an additional $2,000 from European Clubs and Foundations in vital up-front funding.

During the last 46 years, NCDXF has granted over $1 million to hundreds of DXpeditions – helping to put an “all-time-new-one” (ATNO) in the log and make DX happen for thousands of DXers worldwide. WW0, UNITED STATES (Special Event). Members of the Northern Colorado Amateur Radio Club (NCARC), WWV ARC, RMHam, and FCCW along with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will activate special event station WW0WWV between September 28th and October 2nd. Activity is to celebrate the 100th anniversary of WWV, the world’s oldest continuously operating radio station. The WW0WWV station(s) will be set up adjacent to the WWV transmitter site in Fort Collins, Colorado. The plan is to have up to four stations on the air for routine operations. A fifth station will schedule contacts with schools, universities, and museums, as well as conducting unscheduled contacts. Operations will be on various HF bands following typical propagation, and will include 160 meters as well as satellites (SO-50, AO-91, and AO-92) and 6-meter meteor scatter. Modes will be CW, SSB and the Digital modes. A trial run of WW0WWV took place this past week on August 24-25th. Welcome to the Top Upcoming RPGs of August 2019! In this series we highlight the Top 5 RPGs for the upcoming month. In this edition, we’re going to take a look at each of the titles, talk a little about each, and then explain why we think they deserve to be on the list. So join me now and find a mixture of some hidden gems and old favorites given a shiny new coat of paint.

Top 5 Upcoming RPGs Of August 2019

Getting further into the second half of the year, we’ve seen some turned based and strategy titles last month. With the top spot going to the tactical RPG Fire Emblem: Three Houses which offers an interactive hub between battles and even ways to recruit. This month brings some fast paced action titles as well as fantasy with some classic features. Without further ado let’s get into the month of August!

Honourable Mention – Remnant: From the Ashes

Release Date: August 20th Platform: PC/PS4/Xbox One Developer: Gunfire Games Publisher: Perfect World Entertainment

This month’s honourable mention goes to the action third-person shooter, Remnant: From The Ashes. A darkly set title in a post-apocalyptic world full of ferocious monsters who are far from friendly. It’s down to yourself and two other survivors to protect what remains of humanity by taking on the hordes of evil.

Gunfire Games present a co-op with up to four players total, to battle in a fast paced shooter against 100 different types of enemies and over 20 epic bosses. What sets this title apart is its rogue-like features, each playthrough is different due to its dynamic generation system where maps, enemies, quests and even enemy combinations change each time you play. The title offers flexible gear-based progression, four distinct worlds, solo and co-op gameplay.

Remnant: From the Ashes is releasing on August 20th, if you want to get your hands on it early you can gain VIP access on August 16th by pre-ordering.

5. Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet Complete Edition

Release Date: August 9th Platform: Switch Developer: DIMPS Publisher: Bandai Namco

The action RPG Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet joins a new platform this month which is the Nintendo Switch. The Complete Edition brings players to the world of Gun Gale Online. Experience this adventure in third person which includes fast paced action, a unique story and RPG progression.

The story of Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet takes place in a virtual reality world of an MMO. The fantasy universe of Gun Gale, where players pick their own avatars with customisable options. Take your pick from a range of weapons from pistols to rocket launchers and of course swords.

The complete edition contains all four expansion packs previously released which includes Ambush of the Imposter, Betrayal of Comrades, Collapse of Balance and Dissonance of the Nexus. The Switch edition comes with the option to aim using Joy-Con’s gyro sensors. You can team up with a maximum of eight players locally and online for battle royale modes.

Sword Art Online: Fatal Bullet Complete Edition comes with all previously released DLCs, to the Nintendo Switch on August 9th.

4. Crystar

Release Date: August 30th Platform: PS4/PC Developer: FuRyu Publisher: Spike Chunsoft

Crystar is an action RPG developed by FuRyu Corporation and published by Spike Chunsoft. The protagonist, Rei known as the “Warrior of Grief”, fights her way through Purgatory to rescue her little sister Mirai. In order to revive Mirai, Rei strikes a deal with two Demons to become an Executor of Purgatory, by facing her past and confronting the monsters ahead.

Crystar lets the player utilize the power of grief; craft weapons and armor using Rei’s tears of anguish to further your strength on your quest to save Mirai. Using Rei’s tears isn’t just to craft weapons and armor, it also is able to summon a Guardian to protect her in battle. You can play four different characters each with their own set of memories which you will uncover. This is one game where crying is used to empower and face grief head on.

Crystar is due out for PlayStation 4 and PC via Steam on August 27 in North America and August 30 in Europe.

3. Oninaki

Release Date: August 22nd Platform: PC/PS4/Switch Developer: Tokyo RPG Factory Publisher: Square Enix

Oninaki shares the story of Kagachi, a so-called Watcher with the ability to move between the Living World and the Beyond. In a tale where the the Watcher must seek out wandering souls of the dead who are the Lost, to send them on their way onto the next world. Those who depart suffer from regret or pain from previous existence have a chance to turn into monsters, it’s up to the Watcher to save these souls and prevent this from happening.

Tokyo RPG Factory takes inspiration from the classic JRPG genre, taking on some similarities in aesthetic to their previous titles Lost Sphear and I Am Setsuna, but going with bolder colours and a slightly different art style. The title features an action roleplaying battle system with real-time transitions between classes known as Daemons. These lost souls are found throughout the world, come with a number of abilities and wielding a variation of weapons.

Oninaki will release on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PC August 22nd.

2. Black Desert (PS4 Release)

Release Date: August 22nd Platform: PS4 Developer: Pearl Abyss Publisher: Pearl Abyss

Black Desert will be joining a new platform this August which is Playstation 4. The story begins with the Black Stone, an energy source that has now created a war between the capitalist Republic of Clapheon, and the absolute monarch the Kingdom of Valencia. With the help of the Black Spirit, a being who’s fate is a part of yours, you will discover the mysteries that lie in wait.

The fantasy MMORPG comes with highly detailed character customisation tools, high action combat with monsters to slay, a huge open-world to explore and Life Skills such as crafting, hunting fishing and more. The action title has six playable classes, which includes Warrior, Ranger, Sorceress, Berserker, Wizard and Witch. Using a real-time combat system you can experience abilities on the battlefield against mobs of enemies including world bosses.

Whether you enjoy fast-paced combat, or the slower side of MMO life with crafting, fishing and cooking, this magical realm has plenty to conquer.

Black Desert releases on Playstation 4 through the Playstation store on August 22nd and 48 hours earlier for Deluxe or Ultimate pre-orders.

1. World of Warcraft Classic

Release Date: August 27th Platform: PC Developer: Blizzard Entertainment Publisher: Blizzard Entertainment

World of Warcraft Classic brings players back to a simpler time, before the many expansions. While Classic won’t be exactly like the vanilla days it does bring players closer with dedicated servers and will be based off the Drums of War patch 1.12. Classic has long been requested by fans of the game who wanted to go back to a time where WoW was more social, there are no raid or dungeon finders in Classic which means joining guilds.

The game comes with original combat mechanics, skill trees and even the original character models. Expect a level cap of 60, with classes to choose from including Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior. Whether you’re diving in for nostalgia or interested to experience World of Warcraft before Cataclysm, Classic will be available to all this August. In order to play you will need to have an active WoW subscription, which will allow you to create up to three characters per account. You can reserve your character name as early as August 13th.

World of Warcraft Classic releases August 27th 2019 on PC.

Slugger, thank you very much. I was just really happy that an interview with me would be put in it, but I was surprised to see myself on the cover! Maria was super happy :) I always read Slugger, and I never thought that I would be in it, and being able to appear in Slugger both in the January and March 2019 issues is like a dream * Even now, I can't believe it ♪ In the interview, Maria was asking questions :D I was able to hear a lot of things I didn't know (stories about the green monster, and Judge, and so on). Amazing!! I've learned more about MLB. I want to know even more about it!! I thought. The interview was over in a flash. Thank you very much for the super fun interview :)

Live blogging from Brilliance of the Seas 2018 - Preamble

It is time for another live blog to kick off and this time we are headed for another sailing on the fantastic Brilliance of the Seas.

For those keeping score at home, this our third time on Brilliance of the Seas and second time on her this year. Brilliance just recently returned to Tampa to offer cruises for the fall and winter, my wife and I decided to book a sailing on her for a long weekend getaway. We rarely need an excuse to book any Royal Caribbean sailing, but we purposefully booked Brilliance the week after our ten year wedding anniversary as a means of celebrating this milestone. That and I wanted to cruise again.

A trend among all of our sailings on Brilliance of the Seas has been to leave the kids at home, and this sailing will be no different. My in-laws will be watching the kiddos while my wife and I enjoy a 4-night Western Caribbean sailing. Eventually we will take the kids on this ship, but each time we book Brilliance it tends to be for these quick getaways and it provides the kids some time with their grandparents (or at least that is what I tell them).

We booked this sailing back in April and at the time, I found a great rate for the much-talked about aft Junior Suite room. The Radiance Class ships have quite the reputation for their fantastic aft rooms, so I booked one at a pretty good price for both me and my wife. Fast forward to July and our final payment date was rapidly approaching. At that point there was a significant price drop (here is how to check for a price drop) for our Junior Suite. At first I asked my travel agent to reprice the cruise, but then we spotted the Grand Suite was also discounted and still cheaper than we had originally paid for our Junior Suite. So we decided to upgrade to the Grand Suite while still paying less than we originally had planned!

Our four night Western Caribbean sailing will depart on Thursday, September 27 and take us to one port, Cozumel, Mexico.

As I mentioned, this is our third time on Brilliance. We sailed on Brilliance of the Seas for Thanksgiving 2015 and again earlier this year in January 2018. What brings us back to Brilliance is the fact she sails in our "back yard" of Tampa, which is just a smidge over an hour drive. Moreover, it sails over the weekend and we are able to minimize the amount of days off I need from work. Of course, Brilliance is a fun ship and a great cruise for relaxing and enjoying some time well-spent by the pool.

For this sailing, we have a Grand Suite booked and the impetus for booking it had more to do with the great price we got than anything else. Suites are a great way to cruise, but I would be the first to admit booking a suite depends largely on the price. A lot of people ask if a suite is worth it, and I always answer that it depends on how much more it is from other room categories.

Frankly, I am not certain how many perks of staying in a suite we will take advantage of on this sailing, but it is a nice way to cruise. Staying in a suite is a splurge, and I think in this situation it was well-worth the investment.

Itinerary

Our cruise has just one port stop, Cozumel, which will be our fourth time in Cozumel in 2018 (with another two visits to come later this year).

We went back and forth with what to do in Cozumel. With the time of year, it will still be plenty hot and humid so I thought it would make sense to hit up an all-inclusive beach. My wife thought we would be better off heading downtown in the morning for some great Mexican food and then back to the ship to enjoy the pool and drink package benefits.

We are a fan of authentic Mexican food, as well as some good drinking spots around town. We tend to favor Comidas Caseras Tonita, because it is the most authentic Mexican we have found in town. If anyone has any suggestions for great food or drink in downtown Cozumel, please share in the comments.

Once the heat sets in, we will decide if we will head back to Brilliance for pool time or perhaps hop over to Paradise Beach. I love having this sort of a "problem" of deciding between which great place to lounge and spend my afternoon.

Dining Plans

In the spirit of splurging on this cruise, we decided to go with the Ultimate Dining Package on this cruise. Originally I thought to get one of the other dining packages to augment the regular dining, but my wife thought if we are going to go the dining package route, we ought to "go big or go home."

Like all dining packages, we must wait to book reservations once onboard the ship. In the past, we have had little trouble getting the times and restaurants we wanted by ensuring we make reservations as soon as we can once onboard the ship. Brilliance has three specialty restaurants to choose from: Izumi, Giovanni's Table and Chops. One of the "cruising traditions" we have is to figure out our restaurant preferences on the drive to the port.

For this sailing I opted to go for the deluxe beverage package. If you follow my live blogs, you may have noticed I go back and forth on getting the drink packages. On shorter cruises, it is a whole lot easier to make the drink package a worthwhile investment. Plus, without the kids, the drink package makes more sense. On the other hand, we have easily cruised without the drink package too. In this situation, we decided to go for it. Ultimate dining package and drink package should make for a fun (and filling) cruise!

Hello Bookworms! Hope you’re all having a wonderful day and if you’re anything like me, you are looking at the clock waiting for the end of the work day. Find the person who thought it was a good idea to work any day past Christmas & you have your Grinch #jussayin

When I sat down to make my list of top 2018 books I’m looking forward to, I quickly realized my post would be a mile long and I just couldn’t do that to you lovely Bookworms. So instead I opted to split my list into two posts, this post will be for 2018 sequels I’m anticipating in the new year. The second post will be stand-alone/series starters. I have 12 sequels I’m super stoked for so grab your fave snack & or beverage cause ya girl has compiled a bit of a list (no particular order)…

1. The Winter of the Witch (Winternight Trilogy #3) by Katherine Arden aka the book I NEED like air!

I recently read & reviewed The Girl in the Tower (my spoiler free review here) which was utter PERFECTION! Just when I thought this trilogy could not get any better, Arden gave us The Girl in the Tower & now my nights are consumed thinking about the final installment in the world *sobs* This is not the final cover btw, I’m sure the final one will be GLORIOUS as they all have been! Scheduled for August 2018, a little earlier than the December release dates I’ve gotten grown accustomed to with these wintry books but HOORAY regardless!

2. Obsidio (The Illuminae Files #3) by Jay Kristoff and Amie Kaufman

Anyone who has read the first two books in the Illuminae Files can probably tell you how addictive this series really is smh. I was initially intimidated by the format of these books & it took me about a year to finally decide to read the first one…NEVER looked back after that! I will most likely devour Obsidio in one sitting, March 13th you have been claimed!

3. Nyxia Unleashed (The Nyxia Triad #3) by Scott Reintgen

Having recently read Nyxia (my review here), the adrenaline I felt reading this book is still pretty vivid. Not only was the plot fast paced edge of your seat FANTASTIC! the characters are easily some of my favorite in all of YA. Coming from all corners of the world, the crew of Nyxia offers up the diversity we are currently lacking in YA Sci-Fi. Nyxia Unleashed is set to hit the shelves July 2018 *eeeeK*

4. The Heart Forger (The Bone Witch #2) by Rin Chupeco

Last year I read The Bone Witch (my review here) & fell in love with the world building Rin Chupeco had created. I was actually surprised that it wasn’t labeled Adult Fantasy considering the expanse & complexities of the world. This was a real treat for myself seeing as I love details & lush writing which The Bone Witch pulled off beautifully often times reminding me of Memoirs of a Geisha. This wonderful sequel is set to be released March 2018!

5. Iron Gold (Red Rising #4) by Pierce Brown

The Red Rising Trilogy (I can’t call it this anymore) is one that I am a hardcore fan of…no seriously though, I’m a Howler through & through! If this now series had ended with Morning Star, I would’ve been Ok because it was one of the BEST most EPIC endings I’ve ever read. To have read the news of that the world would be expanding was AMAZING for both myself & the hubby who is also a big fan. I read these books before creating Lair Of Books & missed out on fangirling with other Blogger buddies. Well, January 16th is almost upon us & I cannot wait to get my hands on this book! any Howler fans out there?

6. Defy the Worlds (Constellation #2) by Claudia Gray

Defy the Stars (my review here) was my 1st Claudia Gray book & it won’t be my last. I had heard of Gray’s books before getting a galley for Defy the Stars & now I can see why. The world building in the start of this series is fun & introduces us to a A.I. whose dry humor will leave you smiling in disbelief. I was lucky to get my hands on a arc copy of Defy the Worlds but I’m still including it in this list because I will be buying a finished copy on release day. Gray has some of the BEST covers I’ve come across & I’m already obsessed with this one, April 3rd will be the day I get my hands on this pretty little book *heart eyes*

7. Whisper of the Tide (Song of the Current #2) by Sarah Tolcser

If you’re looking for high seas adventure, Song of the Current (my review here) is probably the book for you! I enjoyed the authentic pirate talk and the world building was on point with clothing, way of life, and mythos behind the Gods. What I loved most is that we get a POC MC who knows her calling in life and won’t easily be thrown off by a love interest. Caro is non-traditional & won’t settle for societal norms. June 5th I’m hoping you’re a warm day I can count on for a iced drink & return to the treacherous waters in this world 🙂

8. Daughter of the Siren Queen (Daughter of the Pirate King #2) by Tricia Levenseller

Oh goodness! I can’t even begin to describe my excitement over the follow-up to Daughter Of the Pirate King (my review here). I was so very lucky to have a arc recently gifted to me by the wonderful Ashley over at Socially Awkward Bookworm, she made my year! DOTPK offered up so many laughs alongside a kick a** MC who is the female Jack Sparrow. If Pirates of the Caribeean (prior to Depps shameful behavior) brought you much enjoyment, chances are DOTPK will be a hit for you as well. Ahoy Mateys! February 27th is the day the sequel finds its way to our shores 🙂

9. Grey Sister (Book Of the Ancestor #2) by Mark Lawrence

I read my very first Mark Lawrence earlier this year & I’m so happy It was a good place to start after hearing so much about this well known author. Red Sister (my review here) was a 5 star gloriously bloody EPIC start to the Book of the Ancestor series! In my review I described the setting for Red Sister as Hogwarts mixed with a Ludus (like in Spartacus). Vivid fight scenes, positive female friendships and positive LGBTQIA representation are just some of the things you’ll find in this new Fantasy. Red Sister is perfect for those who read only YA Fantasy and are looking to get their feet wet in adult Fantasy. April 19th is the date set to return this ruthless world 🙂

10. Catwoman SoulStealer (DC Icons #3) by Sarah J. Maas

I don’t really have much to say about this one…I own a copy of Wonder Woman which I haven’t read yet. I came to the decision that I wanted to wait for a few of these books in the series to be out before starting cause I reallllllly dislike waiting haha! I am VERY interested in how Selina Kyle is written considering she is half white/half Cuban. We’ll know more on August 7th!

11. My Plain Jane (The Lady Janies #2) by Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows, and Brodi Ashton

I’d link my review for My Lady Jane but it’s soOo old when I was still in my baby stages of blogging so no thanks hehe! My Lady Jane was the book to make my water almost come out through my nose smh LOL! So silly & filled with hilarious banter, I LOVED that book! from that book came the formation of The Lady Janies which are the 3 awesome authors who brought the characters I fell in love with to life. My Plain Jane is a MUST HAVE & THAT cover is giving me all the Summer vibes! I’ll see you on June 26th Jane 🙂

12. The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy (Guide #2) by Mackenzi Lee

You may have noticed the cover for this title isn’t displayed above and that’s because there hasn’t been a cover reveal. Earlier this year I read The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue (my review here) which was a ton of fun. I’ve really been enjoying YA Historical Fiction lately & this is definitely one of my top favorites. Although I loved the MC Henry oh so much! I really ended up intrigued by his little sister Felicity & I know I’m not alone in this. The Goodreads Synopsis has the following listed:

A sequel to The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue, narrated by Felicity and featuring travel, pirates, and a science girl gang.

I mean…who can resist this?!?! Not I said Lilly…October 2nd is the day to pick up a copy!
