PALAZZO CONTARINI FASAN

Desdemona's house on the Grand Canal in Venice
Every palace on the Grand Canal in Venice hides many stories and legends… In front of the Basilica of Health you can admire the beautiful Contarini Fasan Palace, traditionally considered the house of Desdemona, character of Othello, the tragedy of William Shakespeare. It is a beautiful Gothic palace of small dimensions with elegant openwork balconies.
Legend has it that here lived Nicola Contarini, a heroic Venetian leader in the wars against the Turks of the first half of the 16th century who seems to have such dark skin that is called 'the Moro'. His story would be a little different from that narrated by Shakespeare: his wife, Palma Querini, exasperated by the terrible jealousy of her husband, returned to his family of origin, while he, accused of trying to strangle his wife, was murdered. Another tradition, instead, would identify the Shakespearean Othello with Cristoforo Moro (hence the appellation 'il Moro'). This admiral of the Venetian fleet, in 1515 married a daughter of Donato da Lezze, nicknamed 'White Demon' - of which Desdemona. He left in 1508 for Heraklion (present-day Crete, then the domain of the Serene), lost his wife during the journey in mysterious circumstances.
