(alriiiight here’s the Candace rant I mentioned last night😅)

you know what’s kinda funny?

(warning: this post is like. sooort of salty towards Candace. So like. If she’s your fave. Maaaybe skip this one. I won’t be offended at all, lol.) 

ALSO DISCLAIMER BEFORE WE BEGIN: I DO really like Candace! I think she’s a very relatable character and her struggles are important and she’s definitely grown on me over the years. 

Ok on with the rant. 

The marketing for Candace Against the Universe was VERY CLEAR in making Candace out to be the main character and going on and on about how it’s “finally” about her and she’s finally getting her moment in the spotlight. 

Well. Uh. Hmm. Idk how to say this but CANDACE HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN THE SPOTLIGHT.

So many episodes of the show, especially in the later seasons, seemed to focus more on Candace and her character than Phineas and Ferb and their friends! Like, the kids were just a backdrop with a random invention that didn’t serve much of a purpose other than to provide a song montage and maybe a few gags. 

LIKE. my favorite aspect of the show has always been the main five kids (and I love it when Candace’s plot intersected with their plot in an interesting way!). I was a kid when I got into the show and could relate to them the most so that’s probably the reason why. And I remember getting SO FRUSTRATED when Phineas and Ferb (and ISABELLA)-centric stories kept getting put on the backburner in favor of Candace-centric ones. Candace is a great character, sure...but so is Isabella! and Baljeet! And Buford!!! And PHINEAS AND FERB. By the time the show ended, Candace was more or less the main character (as others have pointed out before me). 

(and ok, this doesn’t apply to EVERY episode. I LOVE Candace in s4 episodes like “It’s No Picnic”, where she’s interacting with Isabella in a meaningful way! But like...in a ton of them...I feel like Candace was more or less the main focus in the non-Doof parts of the episodes.)

So like. For Disney to advertise the new movie as, “Candace finally getting the spotlight, everything’s finally all about Candace!” well....it really rubbed me the wrong way....because things have been all about Candace for a looong long time. On a surface level, Phineas and Ferb were still the main focus of the show, sure, but.....Candace was the real main character. 

And this is a little sad for a girl who grew up identifying with Isabella and being consistently taken aback with Candace’s unabashed antagonism towards her brothers when they were nothing but kind to her. 

like GOSH even some of the things she says in CATU were just SO HURTFUL LIKE. UGHHH CANDACE. I love the character development she gains in the film and the scene with the mug is just! very sweet and very cathartic. but like! seeing her yell at her brothers earlier on. still. hurt. meeeeee. 

I could rant about Candace (and compare her to Isabella and talk about why Isabella is the better person and role model) alllll day but like...I think I should stop for now. 

And again. I DO like Candace. I like Candace being a supportive big sister and being herself and learning how to navigate the world. I just like Phineas, Ferb, and Isabella more. And I hate seeing Candace be dismissive of them. 

(Basically this all boils down to “Candace frustrated me when I was a kid and thus will probably always frustrate me to an extent”.)
