Conversion Corner: Legend of Zelda Rod Spells part 1
Cane of Byrna
While most folks would not think of Link as a spellcaster in The Legend of Zelda, he has made use of plenty of magical items and even some true spells in his many incarnations.
While some items are beloved recurring things like hookshots and bows and bombs, today we are focusing on a class of items that recurs in various forms, being the canes, rods, wands, and other magical staves of the series.
Or, more accurately, we’re looking at an interpretation of the magical abilities of a handful of those items as if they were spells!
The reason for this is inspiration I had from an artist here on tumblr (whom I sadly cannot find again) who did art interpreting the spells in the canes of byrna, somaria, and pacci as containing the favorite spells of mighty sages and wizards from ages past (with varying levels of effectiveness.
So I thought I’d do those three plus two more of the more unique magic rods, interpreting them as spells in Pathfinder!
Without further ado, I present the spell of Byrna!
The cane of Byrna appears in A Link to the Past (as well as a minor cameo in Soul Calibur II), where it is one of only a tiny handful of items that are actually not required to beat the game. In fact, it is somewhat of an upgrade/different flavor of the very item you need to get it in the first place: the magic cape!
However, while the cane grants invulnerability at the cost of your magic meter like the cape, it does not turn you invisible, so enemies still react to your presence. However, it does damage enemies on contact, being flavored as a magical damaging barrier rather than being invisible and intangible.
With that in mind, we’ll try to make a spell that protect you while also damaging foes that come into contact with it.
 Byrna’s Aegis
School abjuration [force]; Level  occultist 6, sorcerer/wizard 7
Casting
Casting Time 1 standard action
Components V, S
Effect
Range personal
Target you
Duration 1 round/level (D)
Description
You conjure up an aura of force around yourself to protect yourself from danger and punish attackers. You are surrounded by a personal spherical wall of force, having the same hp and hardness as that spell, which moves with you and protects you from harm. The spell ends if the barrier takes enough damage to destroy it. Additionally, the wall of force constantly resonates, damaging solid matter that strikes it. Any creature that hits you with a non-reach melee weapon, natural weapon, or unarmed attack takes 3d6 points of force damage plus 1 point per caster level you have (maximum +20). They take this damage even if their attack would destroy the barrier.
I based this spell loosely on planar aegis, making it higher level to reflect how the force damage is fairly useful against everything. Not exactly total invulnerability, but something that a foe will have to hit very hard to chew through.
