Aiguille du Midi by Rian Long
The peak of Aiguille du Midi, at 12,605 feet (3,842 meters) is the closest a visitor can get to Mont Blanc without mountaineering experience. A tram takes visitors from the Chamonix valley floor at 3,396 feet (1,035 meters) up to 12,392 feet (3,777 meters), making it the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world at close to 9,000 feet. The ride takes about 20 minutes and is done using two tram segments.
In this photo a few of the buildings on the peak can be seen. The lower structure is a viewing area that is part of a network of tunnels that have been created in the rock. The upper section is reached by elevator from this lower section. On the right side of the frame a helicopter that was being used to haul up supplies for a construction project can be seen.
