I am so tired of people thinking Watson is this nothing, that he's just Holmes' sweet little BFF, that he doesn't contribute much except writing the stories, or being in the room, or whatever.

Guys, gals, nonbinary pals, let me introduce you to John H. Watson, lately of the Army Medical Department (from "The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton"):

"He [Milverton] stepped forward, took up his coat, laid his hand on his revolver, and turned to the door. I picked up a chair, but Holmes shook his head and I laid it down again.”

His first instinct to keep the odious snake Milverton from leaving was to THROW A FUCKING CHAIR AT HIM in sheer outrage. And that IS Watson. Always ready to throw down in defence of friends or strangers at the earliest opportunity, if the need arises.

I am not sure (and haven't done my research yet) how exactly universities in UK worked in ~1875 but seeing how prone to change systems of education are, I doubt thigs have changed much since.

So since I hc Victor as a botany student, and Holmes did chemistry, it seems likely they had a couple of mutual faculties and studied together, riiiiight?

I feel like Dr. Roylott is honestly one of the more intimidating Holmes characters, not because of his strength, but because he shows up so closely on the heels of Miss Stoner’s visit. The way he’s tracked her is so creepy, and it really highlights how much power he has over her. 

That being said, I love how flippant Holmes is in speaking to him. The way he’s either very coolly polite (talking about the crocuses and the weather) or outright excited (grinning at being called a “busybody,” laughing as he fixes the poker) is hilarious. It really demonstrates the appeal of his character: he has a good sense of humor, and even though he’s facing rather intimidating people, it’s hard to feel scared when he doesn’t.

Ok a post about Holmes refusing a knighthood had me firing off in the tags but I feel like this is better it’s own post:

Remember when BBC Sherlock tried to play off the canon moment where Watson mentions Holmes was offered a knighthood and refused, and it becomes some try for tension between the brothers instead of a genuinely nice moment.

When in TGG Sherlock saves the day with the memory stick and gives it back to Mycroft.

“He was over the moon. Threatened me with a knighthood… again.”

Canon Holmes when offered the knighthood (but obv not by Mycroft) would sometime later hit up Mycroft at his place and be like “so, brother mine guess what? I was offered a knighthood.”

“Good for you.”

“And refused haha.”

And Mycroft would break into laughter. “Yes, good for you Sherlock lmao nice one!”

The end of Reigate Squires! Here is some annotations for one of my favorite stories (but expect more content about it afterwards)

Everytime I think Watson is going to be mild about his own regard for Holmes he hits me with stuff like "I rushed MADLY towards him"

"Nevermind that you literally just saw them trying to murder me."

Here's a fun image. I agree with the discussion on discord that normally Holmes would have been able to take these two down, but it speaks as to his physical state how quickly they overpowered him, but it's nice to see him a bit knocked about.

Don't do it in front of Watson, though.

It's always crazy to me how quickly this one gets solved. They were having breakfast and it isn't even lunch time before Holmes catches the killers? And in the meantime he has inspected the garden, pretended to faint, knocked a bowl of oranges, gotten throttled and talked with both the murderers and one of the victim.

Aww it makes me feel some type of way Holmes comparing himself to a bird of bad omens. It's sweet that Hayter reassures him that he was only too delighted to see him work.

"I make a point of never having prejudices" oh, really, Holmes? i feel like we're gonna see about that in the very next story.

Also, no screenshot but I want to point out that even though the bit about telling someone's age from their handwritting is bullshit and has been disproved, it's easy to cast aside considering Holmes would still have been able to solve this case from the other plausible deductions.

Overall I love this story because it's a really great balance between character insight, H&W relationship shenanigans and Holmes' astuteness. The villains are not very formidable but I guess they wouldn't be, to commit a crime the very day Sherlock Holmes is in town.

And hey guess what! I have a fic set just after this story! Tags: Getting together, First Kiss, First Time ;)
