I don't know exactly which comic this is from but the sentiment remains the same.
Steve Rogers has never had a moment's peace in his entire life ever since he got the serum. He's been in fight mode every day. He's been made to follow orders from the 40s and into the future. And before the argument is made that "well, that's what he signed up for" let me stop you right there.
The government and SHIELD saw Steve's morality as one of his weaknesses and capitalized on it. He can never say no, not when innocent lives are at stake. So they keep him on a leash. They keep him working and busy because they know, he can never say no to them.
And the only time he's ever been selfish was when he realized that Bucky was still alive. He literally committed treason for Bucky who ironically was the only man who's ever treated Steve Rogers kindly. The only one who saw Steve for Steve and loved him unconditionally because of it. Even after he got the serum, he never treated Steve like he was some kind of robot. Or some other inanimate object to be ogled & touched and tested.
And Steve himself is fighting with his own sense of morality and his duty to saving innocents. He's not an inherently selfish person but he has those little moments when he just wants to live. Just wants to be Steve Rogers and not Captain America. It's not that he hates the job. But he's sure as hell getting tired of being a lackey for the government and never seeing an ounce of compassion or understanding for it.
He doesn't expect thanks or gratitude. But for once, it would be nice if someone was kind to him. If the world would be kind to him. If the world could give Steve Rogers a chance.
Yeah. That would be nice.

I would pay good money for Marvel comics to make an Infinity Comic dedicated solely to the life of Arnie Roth

okay, at some point I know I saw a comic panel with Steve and Sam being undercover, and Steve was going by something like "Grant Rogerson" and Sam was "Willy Samson..." does anyone happen to have a screenshot of this lol

Alex Ross’ recreation of Jack Kirby’s original cover for Captain America Comics (vol. 1) #1 (March, 1941).
Good to see Cap indulging in what should be every American’s favorite pastime.

they don't talk about it much because it's something (like most things between them) that goes mostly unsaid most of the time, but tony's drinking is a core factor of steve and tony's relationship.
tony says it himself, when he's reminded that steve's dad was an alcoholic, and says it makes sense, a lot makes sense now - and steve denies it, because of course he does. "don't try make this personal." but it's always been personal, steven.
Tumblr media
it's always been personal. to the moment where he tracked tony to some shitty motel and found him drinking himself to oblivion, desperately attempted to talk him out of it, but failed, it was always personal. from the moment he looked at tony and saw joseph rogers, it's always been personal.
Tumblr media
"what you say is not news to me." he turns around as tony cries. "my father -- rest his soul --" he says it because he has to, because it's what ma would have wanted, because he's not angry, of course he's not, he's not angry. "was an alcoholic. we tried to help him, but a man has to want to be helped."
steve's skin is probably crawling with the possibility tony pointed out - beat him up? he'd never beat him up. he'd never do something like what (what a self fulfilling prophecy), and he leaves because he knows he cannot help here. just like joseph rogers, tony stark is ill and needs the sort of help that steve cannot offer. once again, steve is simply not enough.
he wasn't enough to fix his father, he wasn't enough to protect his mother, he wasn't enough to save bucky, and now he's not enough to save tony. he's just not enough. and now he just can't help but looking at tony and seeing the violence, the pain he was subjected to over some alcohol and repressed anger.
Tumblr media
tony's not his father, of course. he knows that. of course he knows that. but it's always been so personal, hasn't it? so much of it was about them. the spark that caused the explosion. tony brings the friction, steve brings the inflammable. tony brings the alcohol, steve brings the repressed anger. and he's just not good enough to stop it.
Tumblr media
he's just not enough.

Steve Rogers is a babe. Like khaleesi Game of Thrones level of babe. He is just FINE.
No matter the version - live action, animated, cartoon, comic, fan art - he is a vision.
The Disney/marvel version of him is somehow cute, pretty, sexy, and hot at the same time. While also being badass when he needs to be.
It’s a very hard feat to achieve as a male character but Steve can do that.
Also, his body/figure is very unique. He has broad shoulders and broad/ample chest pec area but he has a very narrow waist and he also obviously has America’s ass. I’ve always thought it was the male version of an hour glass figure - which is the most desirable shape for women (at least it used to be).
I definitely think Steve is a male version of blonde bombshell but I don’t think it was intentionally meant to be that way. It just happened and I think that’s what makes it even more great. He developed and evolved into this as a character and then in the movies they elevated it likely also unintentionally but it worked.
THIS.
You're so real for this because I've noticed it since CATFA. To begin with, pre-serum Steve just goes against every physique a typical hero is supposed to have. Then he gets the serum and gets big and is supposed to wow all the ladies when in actuality his physique is less God of Thunder and more, Disney Princess.
He's clean shaven everywhere- except for Infinity War which I hated (it was not his best look & I hated the beard don't @ me)- doesn't have the facial hair like MOST of the male mcu heroes and has bimbo blonde hair. Not to mention his eyes that are just gorgeous.
And most of it is Chris Evans' natural features, but in Avengers 1, when his hair was buzzed for Snowpiercer, they did a lace for him and like, THE HAIR WAS FLOPPY AND SOFT AND SHINY AND GORGEOUS. like I think we can all agree Avengers 1 (baby Cap) was the most gorgeous he's looked followed closely by Winter Soldier Steve. He is totally a blonde bombshell.
Not to mention the narrative surrounding his character, especially in the MCU. The guys all make fun of him for being a virgin- like, sure let's make the guy's sex life a focal point of his character arc- like they do with female characters. They have Nat trying to find him a date, sort of like girls do in those early 2000s movies with their besties. Steve himself is a very tactical fighter and has more moves in common with Black Widow than Bucky who is an absolute unit. Steve's a ballerina in combat, light on his toes, pretty and lean. Not bulky like some of the comics make him out to be.
And let's just talk about his LIPS!
Like, he's got the plumpest, most plushy soft pillow-looking lips I've ever seen on a guy. So, in addition to the body, he's also got the pretty face. Long wispy lashes, full, red lips, big blue eyes and a clean shaven face. He's every typical "guy's" fantasy- just in guy form. Pair his physical features with his sweet, shy disposition and maybe that's why everyone flirts with him so much.
He's absolutely endearing and totally flips the usual "Alpha-esque" idea of what a male superhero is supposed to look and act like.

I want to see JM DeMattis write a story telling the story of Arnie Roth's first real love- the Chassidic boy we see Steve save in the new Captain America comic run. It would be a story similar to Chaim Potok's 'The Chosen'- two Jewish boys from different worlds trying to figure it all out in Brooklyn under the shadow of war. They don't get a fairytale happy ending. The Chassidic boy ends up getting married, and Arnie goes off to fight in WW2, but it would be a bittersweet little story for the times they do have together.
