hey, basco’s here!

miss komura gets her first two parter, introducing a character who’s reputation exceeded him, the privateer (derogatory) basco (and sally!)

now, one thing that’s bugged me about gokai so far is that i’ve generally found marv himself to be... the weakest of the core cast. very structurally important, but lacking Something in his focus thus far. so how do things go with his ex back in town?

...well! basco is very charmingly uncharming and slimy, good for him. i don’t think the introdution of his rivalry with marv was quiiite the pick-me-up i was looking for with marv though. i might even have found the rest of the crew’s dogheaded determination to escape first to marv avoid sacrificing anything to rescue them of more interest over all. squirm down those vents, pirates

that said! i will say i think my favorite of marv’s Backstory Moments so far (well other then the thing with joe, which is more under the Joe Moments heading) is the scene with marv facing off against akared for the first time. great vibes there! something about that thread i want to see more of

anyways. basco’s here, and from what i’ve heard miss komura will keep writing A Lot Of Basco, so im sure he’ll be back again in a future Miss Komurawatch

gokai miss komurawatch:

hey, it’s basco again!

well, more incidentally this time as this is mainly a) the gingaman (i think) tribute and b) yet another episode in gai’s intro arc. so also miss komura’s first shot at writing gai

...i did have to roll it around for a bit to figure out if i actually had anything to say on this one but. thinking of the central conflict, it is one that very much feels like a reoccurring miss komura motif

hyuuga (i feel weird referring to him by his civilian name when i dont actually know him, but i dont think they said his transformed name once this episode) sees gai acting inexperienced and bashful, and asks to take his transformation device to better protect the world himself. gai knows hyuuga has more experience then him and may do better then him, but after overhearing marv go ‘dumbass rights!’ in his fight with basco, ultimately takes the self-motivated choice that he wants to continue being gokai silver himself, which hyuuga respects

so something about miss komura’s hero writing: shes very supportive of heroes making non-selfless choices. in comparison to how other writers may frame a choice like this as selfish, her writing is supportive of heroes putting what They, Specifically, want as a priority. so... its rather unsurprising that this motif would show up in gokai, since that attitude does already feel very fittingly piratical.
