definitely gotta be "anticolonialism isn't a big theme in ofmd because they never show any on-screen acts of violent colonialism. if the writers wanted to make some sort of commentary on colonization they would've shown these violent historical atrocities on-screen in their romcom"

8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about

the idea that the show cares about "redemption" in the traditional sense of Bad Person Becomes Good or Person Who Did A Bad Thing Makes Up For The Harm They Caused. i think this comes from a lot of people not really picking up on the fact that ofmd doesn't care about physical violence in and of itself (bc like, they're all pirates, they all do violence, it would get hypocritical if they were like "killing people is wrong!" when the majority of the characters have absolutely killed people before and are not broken up about it). i see this shit thrown around all the time, sometimes rephrased as "the show is about second chances to become a better person" or "the show is about forgiveness and making amends." it's fucking baffling to me because like...

the badmintons were childhood bullies who both died in comedically gruesome accidents. calico jack betrayed ed and killed a bird and he got hit dead-on by a cannonball. ed’s abusive dad gets choked to death by his own son. there is no indication on whether stede’s dad is still alive, which implies that he’s dead and will never get the chance to repair his relationship with his son (which he probably wouldn’t give a shit about anyway). episode 5 has a bunch of racist french people die off-screen in various gruesome ways (drowning, burning, skinned alive with a snail fork and tossed overboard).

even with our leads! stede's journey in e10 is about him getting emotional closure/clarity and not about actually learning how abandoning his family hurt them emotionally (in fact, if it hurt them emotionally, the show barely went into any detail. it seems like they were more hurt by him coming back than disappearing in the first place). and ed shows no guilt or moral dilemma about his past of "loving a good maim" or "making some poor bloke eat his own toes for a laugh," just a kind of bored exhaustion because he's bored of living like that. and jim's story could be about how "killing people for revenge is bad," except that jim did very much kill the man who killed their family and has zero regrets about it.

anyway this is a good post about it but basically the thing everyone keeps confusing with "redemption" is the show's thesis of living authentically and being yourself and freeing yourself from the shackles of societal expectations—specifically the shackles of the white colonial cishetero patriarchy. and also at the same time this show is extremely pro revenge fantasy (who hasnt fantasized about their shithead childhood bully accidentally shooting themself in the face??), it just doesn't let revenge be the thing that actually heals its characters from trauma.

(For dishonesty hour) how do you prefer to spend a weekend?

Oh, I love to spend my weekends responding to emails. I let them all build up throughout the week, saving them up in my inbox, so that when saturday morning comes I can jump right out of bed and start typing away! Nothing fills me with more joy than drafting emails to my bosses or my long-distance friends, poring over each word to make sure everything's exactly right. I always feel so relaxed after!

This is so interesting because for the longest time I would always get the INFP result, then for a few years I was usually INFJ, and I guess I'm back to my INFP ways. In some ways I think I relate to the INFJ profile, because I can be a bit more cold/reserved than the super-fluffy stereotype of the INFP, but if I'm honest that soft fluffy side is just a part of myself I don't show everyone because it feels quite vulnerable. 😗

Favourite Colour: Changes with the tides. In a bit of a green era right now, but often come back to yellow with pink & yellow as a fave combination.

Last Book: I've been in a bit of a slower reading stage for a few months now, sort of picking at several different books, but the last one I finished was Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk on the recommendation of bestie @kieren-fucking-walker. Palahniuk's writing style really propels you along and it was appropriately unhinged 💛 I also recently read Bryan Lee O'Malley's latest graphic novel Seconds, which I really enjoyed although the romance subplot turned out to be a bit underbaked and it kinda lesbian-baited me a little 😅

Last Movie: Me and the folks just watched Ferris Bueller's Day Off, an all-time favourite. And now that I've got some space to myself I treated myself to a Jaws night 🥰🥰🥰

Last TV Show: Just been watching some Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) because it's an old fave of mum's. The show I'm chugging along through myself atm is good ol' Hatecrimes House MD.

Sweet/Spicy/Savoury: Mostly savoury, but got a real sweet tooth for fresh fruit

Relationship Status: Single and too lazy/awkward to do nought about it </3 Fellow fags come flirt with me

Also looking forward to having my big room revamp done, my cosy bed nook is basically there but now there's more furniture to customise! Ok er Stede Bonnet for the character bingo

I have. So many feelings about this man when I relate way too much to his self shame or at least I used to. And him and Ed of course made me cry as much as anyone.

But God, do I wish there were more fans out there who acknowledged that this man is INSANE and not just in the Cute Soft Uwu Gay way. Like yes, he has his endearing side but he also stumbles into a situation he knows nothing about and his mistakes quite literally are deadly at times. I know some do, though, fortunately: I know some Flanderization of a character like Stede is inevitable when the fandom is big enough. It just mildly annoys me to see that portrayal lol. Like: he has a heart but he is also a bitch and frankly he wouldn't be half as interesting to me without both qualities.

Rewatched 01x04 The Phantom Traveller the other night and wow! John Winchester really is the deadest of deadbeat dads, huh?

Making his outgoing message so that it’s clear that:

1) he knows Dean’s current phone number, despite never even once using it to explain to his worried son(s) why he’s gone and/or that he’s okay.

2) that in his view it’s totally okay to just direct emergencies over to Dean for him to handle in his place. No need to check with Dean about it or let him know that’s what he’s doing.

Sam had also been trying to reach John before this episode, but presumably after the pilot, without getting this message. So it was a recent development. (Dean’s number is just months old.) So he had enough time to record it, but none to call his sons.

They have every reason to believe he’s dead or worse, and he can’t just call to say “I’m fine, no need to worry”?

For any that it might concern:

Fictional wealth cannot be hoarded. It’s fictional. A mere plot device so that the characters can have fantastical adventures without also having to worry about bills.

If you can accept 1) superpowers 2) magic and/or 3) impossible levels of skill, then you can accept a character having guilt free wealth to spend on gear, travel, etc.

If you are actually concerned about capitalistic propaganda, there are only two kinds worth thinking about:

1) “I made it square”

2) “Money well spent”

1) is any character that went from nothing to gazillionaire through nothing but hard work and determination. (And the occasional treasure hunt that for some reason isn’t counted as robbery.) Main offender: Scrooge McDuck.

2) may have inherited their money, but at least they’re spending it on charities as well as their fantastical type of do-good. (While still living in mansions and wait how much money are we even talking about here? How can you afford all of this?) Main offender: Bruce Wayne. (Tony Stark is a strong contender, but at least his money isn’t used to litter the streets with batarangs. T’Challa is the wealthiest superhero to my knowledge, but I honestly don’t know how his wealth is used or even how it’s distributed. Is it all tied up in vibranium or is it in more liquid assets? Any businesses that operate outside of Wakanda? Although fictional wealth is never that well defined. Like how does Bruce afford all those wonderful toys without leaking his identity?)

And yet, wealth is its own fiction. Even without fictional romanticism of billionaires, you would have people believing that real life billionaires earned their money. That is one of the foundational lies of capitalism and the free market. That it self regulates distribution of wealth towards “the worthy” and that you too can become “worthy” if you’re just “tougher than the thoughies and smarter than the smarties”.

1) and 2) are myths baked into the system in many ways. Capital generating capital has to be justified, and not just for the capitalists. Businesses get their starting capital only by promising gains for the investors. Big or small. Sucks? Yes. Easily remedied? Nope. There’s no gain in crashing current systems until we have a suitable replacement.

TL;DR: Fictional wealth is a plot device, and not able to affect real life wealth in more or less a fashion than fictional poverty does. Judging characters’ morality on their accumulated wealth makes no sense. In real life there is no extreme wealth without suffering. In fiction you can do anything. Writers are not economists.

Cool. The guy you’re talking to lived through 14 000 605 possible outcomes, trying to find one where they didn’t lose to the space grape. Presumably each time experiencing terrible death and grief, though it’s not clearly stated.

But it can be gleaned from his earlier sacrifice of locking himself into a time loop with an endless horror heading for Earth. A time loop triggered by his own (violent) death.

He was also given a choice of using his mystic powers to regain the use of his hands, allowing him a return to his old and glamorous life. Or instead learn to live with the constant pain and tremors in order to focus his use of the mystic arts on protecting others. He chose the world and the multiverse over his own comfort.

But sure. You know so much more about sacrifice. 🙄

“I eat fruits,” said Remus, bouncing an eyebrow. Sirius scoffed and gave him a little shove, but Peter burst into sycophantic laughter. 

“Steady on, Wormtail,” said James impatiently. “And it’s absolutely true. Deer have been observed in the wild eating small animals, roadkill, and carrion.”

Sirius tossed his head, “What a load of shit, Prongs. Give it up; you’re fooling no one.”

“He’s having you on, my love,” put in Remus. 

“I’m not!” James insisted, half laughing. “I read it in a muggle wildlife magazine.” 

“Where’d you get hold of a muggle magazine?” asked Peter. 

James ignored him, “I reckon Prongs could hunt better than Padfoot.”

Sirius laughed incredulously, “All right then, care to bet on that?” 

“Absolutely,” James grabbed hold of Sirius’s hand and shook it rather aggressively. “Bet you a Galleon I can catch, kill, and eat an animal next full moon. Before you can, Padfoot,” he added. 

“Make it ten Galleons,” said Sirius carelessly. 

“Fifty Galleons,” suggested Remus. “A hundred.” 

“A thousand!” squeaked Peter. “A thousand Galleons!”

“Padfoot, I bet you the Potter family fortune.” 

“What do you get if you win?” asked Sirius. 

James considered, “You write my Transfiguration essays for the rest of term.”

“No bet,” said Sirius promptly.
