(Note: I did a post on this scene a while back but I decided to revisit it with additional analyses and the true script pages attached.)
Scene 82 from the original 2004 script for Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2006) is one of several that ended up being cut from the film. We know that it was shot thanks to several promotional stills and behind-the-scenes photographs that have surfaced over time (we got the famous photos of Kirsten smoking in costume from the shooting of this scene — one of the first glimpses we got of the production), but, unfortunately, no footage of it has ever been released.
The context of the scene is that it takes place shortly after the accession of Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette (1774) and before the visit of MA’s brother, the Emperor Joseph (1777). These years, her early 20s, were marked by a growing sense of confidence, no doubt inspired by her transition from dauphine to queen consort. MA established an intimate circle of her choosing (The Private Society) in defiance of protocol, collaborated with Rose Bertin to produce various styles of dress, all far more adventurous than the traditional court styles, and threw herself into the pleasures of opéra balls, gambling houses, horse races, and the privacy of Trianon, all while attempting to produce her first child with Louis. Words like frenetic, légèreté, and hedonistic typically get thrown around by biographers when discussing MA’s behavior during this period, to highlight a sense that the queen was uncontrollably flighty and inattentive.
There is deep misogyny in the dismissal of MA as simply lightheaded and frivolous during this time. In more fair terms, this is a 20-year-old who had just gone from four years in a new, unwelcoming environment, surrounded by a cast of characters who were not exactly always desirable company, behaving from sunrise to sunset according to famously difficult etiquette practices, finding herself faulted, on a near daily basis, with her failure to conceive, and generally struggling to find her place. Now, with this burst of freedom that has come with becoming a queen consort, she has granted herself the permission to seek amusements (especially in Paris, still a virtually unexplored city to her), to enjoy playing with her appearance on her own terms, and to befriend whom she pleases.
Sofia Coppola does a wonderful job at portraying MA in this light, almost, in a modern sense, as a young girl who has just become an adult and moved out of her parents’ house and is enjoying newfound freedom.
Scene 82 would have followed the Birthday Party sequence that remains in the final cut of the film. Very significantly, it is preceded by a short insert of a pornographic libelle, of the variety that began circulating around this time (1774) that showed MA in a very unflattering light (lavish, lascivious, a tribade, etc.). This was also cut from the film, as were other inserts that show up in the original script. The libelle that the screenplay is referencing here is «Le Lever d’Aurore», which took her innocent sunrise excursion into the gardens of Versailles with friends, chaperoned by the comtesse de Noailles, and corrupted it. What was inspired by the Incan devotion to the sun and conducted in adolescent reverie (and in the film is shown as an after-party to MA’s 18th birthday), became a bacchanalia, showing MA and her friends hiding in the shrubbery of Versailles with a variety of lovers, both male and female. The insert was there to remind the audience that the public and private perceptions of MA’s lifestyle and conduct were of two very different varieties.
The fact that Scene 82 follows the inserts may be intentional, as if to suggest that the scene is not entirely accurate (in the same way that the opening shot of MA reclining in splendor and the “Let them eat cake” line are supposed to be fantasy depictions of the queen, not accurate ones).
As you can see in the script pages, Scene 82 is another gambling party that takes place in the queen’s apartments. But this one is different from the one that comes almost directly before it. The conversation, presented as Polignac entertaining MA with sordid tales of the courtiers present as well as with stories of her own sexual experiences, is much more adult and licentious than the conversation at the 18th birthday party. Louis XVI is present at the opening of the scene but retires quickly, and Lamballe is not featured, only referenced. Tom Hardy’s Rohan (not be confused with the factual cardinal de Rohan), makes an appearance, which would have been his first feature in the film, before his involvement at the later Trianon segment.
The idea here is that this intimate circle, in direct adjacency to MA, is perhaps not the most suitable for her to surround herself with, which was a constant complaint against her by those on the outside. But the sexually explicit conversation, Polignac’s morality, and the looser feeling of this party in comparison to the many others in the film may be interpreted as this scene being presented to the audience as intentionally questionable … Is this another fantasy sequence, a party thrown in as seen from the perspective of the courtiers projecting depraved, adulterous behavior at the queen and her company?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Significantly, MA is very much an observer in this scene, watching and listening but not involving herself in any reproachable behavior, which is an accurate portrayal. During the early years of the reign, she enjoyed the company (in addition to Lamballe, Polignac, and a few of her in-laws) of various older men of the court, almost all foreign and all able storytellers who regaled their young queen with stories of their experiences across the Continent. The baron de Besenval, the princes de Ligne and de Lauzun, the comte d’Esterházy, and the ducs de Coigny and de Guînes were all invited into the queen’s private apartments to entertain her with anecdotes of their travels and conquests, from Hungary to Switzerland and elsewhere through the European courts. None of them were considered suitable to be so intimate with MA according to etiquette, and she was severely faulted for this behavior by the royal court. She did not, however, ever allow herself to pass further than innocent flirtation with these men — Antonia Fraser speaks of the hysteria that MA had around her chastity. She sought the company of amusing, older men, but never in the context of adulterous behavior. They made her laugh and brought her levity, but if any of them ever crossed the line, they were very sharply and publicly reprimanded for their conduct.
One of the promotional stills for Scene 82 shows MA asleep, surrounded on all sides by men of the court, one of whom appears to be touching her. The image is another reason why perhaps this scene is supposed to walk the line between reality and fantasy … MA did surround herself with these men during her gatherings, but the physicality of the tableau suggests a bodily intimacy with these men that is definitely more in agreement with the vicious falsehoods spread by uninvited courtiers rather than historical fact. The scene feels out of place, as if the tone of this party isn’t consistent with the rest of the film — the conversation and behavior is much more extreme than anything else in Marie Antoinette, and this is perhaps intentional.
Why the scene was cut we do not know. It could have been due to pacing issues, since, with its inclusion, there would have then been two gambling parties back-to-back (which, again, may have been intentional — a more factual gambling party followed by a shocking illustration from a libelle, which is then followed by a fantasy gambling party to remark upon the different perceptions of MA’s lifestyle). It could be that the conversation was felt to be too vulgar, or at least vulgar in a way that stands out too much from the rest of the film. Or perhaps another reason entirely.
But the scene is important, as it’s a glimpse into what the public was guided to believe was the typical behavior of the queen of France, encouraged by the hands of the courtiers who were uninvited or ignored by MA.
Hopefully one day we get footage of this scene. I’m also curious if this scene was ever fully edited or if it was cut from the film before post-production was thoroughly on its way.

That marriage of Don Manuel also belongs to the category of those events which have given rise to a considerable amount of gossip. For some years after his flight from Portugal he traveled about and tried to spend his time in the pleasantest manner possible, but not in one calculated to win for him the respect of the Portuguese nation. His mother used to implore him to get married, if only from the dynastic point of view, which required him to have an heir to his pretentions and to his rights. The young King did not take kindly to the idea, which he resisted as long as he found it possible to do so. But at last the leaders of the Royalist party at Lisbon sent one of their adherents to the Dowager Queen, and begged her to explain to her son that they made it a condition to any movement they might attempt in his favour that he should take himself a wife, as the birth of an heir was indispensable to the consolidation of the pretensions of the House of Braganza to the Crown of Portugal.
Thus forced to act, Don Manuel started on a journey to Germany, where he hoped to find a suitable consort, willing to associate herself with his precarious chances and ambitions. This was no easy matter to accomplish, as his racy reputation had preceded him everywhere. Even the daughters of the Archduke Frederick of Austria refused to anything to do with him, and yet they were supposed to be extremely desirious of snatching the first chance that offered of leaving their mother, with whom their relations were not the very best. Manuel met with a succession of rebuffs wherever he showed himself, and at last returned to London, where he explained to Queen Amelie that it had been quite impossible for him to comply with her wishes and those of his partisans.
Great consternation followed upon his announcement, and the Queen took to her bed, so upset did she feel at this bitter disappointment to all her hopes. It was at this juncture that Cardinal Netto, the former Patriarch of Lisbon, came to the rescue, and made to Don Manuel and his mother a proposition which pleased them both exceedingly. The Braganzas had relations in Germany, the sister of Don Luis, the grandfather of King Manuel, the Infanta Maria Antonia having married the Prince Leopold of Hohenzollern – the head of this illustrious house, or, rather of the Roman Catholic branch of it – who resided at the castle of Sigmaringen. She had had several children and the eldest son had wedded the daughter of the Countess of Trani, the sister of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. She had died from consumption a few years after her marriage, leaving two sons and one daughter – the Princess Augusta Victoria, who was twenty-three years old,not exactly pretty, but attractive, intelligent, admirably well brought up, and whose family connections were unimpeachable; who, moreover was related to the House of Braganza, and might feel more inclined to share the fortunes of its young chief than a woman to whom he was a perfect stranger. Don Manuel sighed, but recognized the wisdom of the advice which was being proffered, and consented at last to a visit to his cousin the Prince of Hohenzollern, during which he would have an opportunity to become acquainted with the Princess Augusta Victoria.
The visit proved a success, inasmuch as the two young people grew to like each other well enough to risk the adventure of marriage which, at all events, was a most suitable one for both parties. Don Manuel's fiancée was a most reasonable person, who, perhaps because she did not expect much either from life or from the husband she was to marry, had got more chances of happiness than would have been the case with a romantic and affectionate girl who looked for something else in life than a good establishment. She accepted the position of an exiled Queen, and being heiress to a lot of money of her own, besides the large fortune which Don Manuel had been able to save from the disaster in which his crown had been lost, she fully meant to shape a most agreeable existence for herself in the English home whither her husband intended to take her after their marriage.

~👑🌹Long May They Reign🌹👑~
On the 24th of June 1509, Henry VIII and Katherine of Aragon were jointly crowned at Westminster Abbey. The procession began three day before when they took possession of the Tower. After seven long years of living in a political limbo, waiting in vain to marry the next in line to the throne, her dreams had finally come true. She and Henry had taken everyone by surprise with their marriage. The handsome boy who had accompanied her to the altar when she married his eldest brother Arthur seven years ago took after his maternal grandfather, Edward IV. Like him, he was determined to show everyone that he was his own man and that he would marry the woman of his choosing. Although he claimed that his father had made him promise to take his brother’s widow as his wife, not many believed this tale, yet they were all eager to please their new King who was a great contrast from his late father. When he and Katherine were married, the ceremony had been very low key; their coronation was however was beyond splendid. For Katherine, this must have all seemed remotely familiar. When she married Prince Arthur, she had been greeted with pageantry that lasted for days. This was no different. Henry wanted to spare no expense. The King, as one of his courtiers [Lord Mountjoy] said, was not after “gold, gems, or precious metals, but virtue, glory, and immortality.” Two days after Henry and Katherine took possession of the Tower of London, the city of London prepared to welcome their new king and queen-to-be. At about four o’clock the celebrations began with guildsmen lined in the streets. The Lord Mayor (Stephen Jennings, once a merchant) was among them, standing erect, wearing his golden chain of office while the other aldermen were close by alongside the guards who were in charge of crowd control. Henry and Katherine emerged from the Tower wearing resplendent gowns, each with their separate entourages. Henry beneath a canopy of cloth and state, wearing a crimson robe, golden coat studded with precious gems, mounted on a huge worse draped in golden fabric. Katherine followed him, riding in a litter borne by white horses, and wearing a beautiful white gown, similar to what she wore when she married Prince Arthur. Her hair was loose, as was the tradition of Consorts to symbolize their purity. Around her head was a golden and pearl circlet. Among her retinue was none other than the newly knighted Thomas Boleyn. Henry VIII made it his duty to continue the tradition of creating new Knights of the Bath on the eve of their coronation. Besides him was the King’s best friend, the rakish Charles Brandon, the ambitious Duke of Buckingham who was dressed for the occasion, wearing gold and diamonds. The two empty thrones were waiting for them in the Abbey where they would be crowned the following day. No doubt, they were eager to get it over with as a heavy rain poured down on them that Saturday. Many of their courtiers took shelter until the shower stopped. But Katherine –as her new husband- did not. They were born royals, and Katherine above all, trained to be Queen all her life. She had seen her mother ride through the camp, greeting soldiers, putting aside her servants’ discomfort as they saw her injured men. In Isabella, Katherine had learned that a Queen was Queen not just because of her lineage, but because of her bearing. And Katherine was ready to show that as her mother before her, she was going to take on her new role seriously. However, seeing her ladies’ discomfort and acknowledging that she could not let her litter be more ruined (her dress and hair were already ruined, Katherine like so many was drenched in rain water); she took refuge with them on a nearby tavern called the Cardinal’s Hat. Despite Katherine’s greatest efforts; she could not avoid the superstitious ideas that were running through everyone’s mind. A rain on a day like this, on the eve of their coronation, on mid-summer’s day was seen as a bad omen. This was an age where omens were taken seriously, where superstition was seen as logic, and were the former were used as evidence of God’s anger or discontent. The royal entourage managed to reach Westminster Palace where they dined with their guests before retiring to the Painted Chamber. The following morning was better than expected. The ceremonies were resumed and they were crowned at Westminster Abbey. As the day before, the two were splendidly dressed and as with Henry’s father and namesake, his grandmother, Margaret Beaufort, wept. Only this time they were of relief and joy because her son’s dynasty –against all odds- had survived and now the new generation would be crowned.

OCtober Day 1: Sunrise
Thank you @oc-growth-and-development for the prompts! I was debating whether or not to post some of mine for a while, but it’s eight days in and I figured, what the hell, so prepare for a bit of a writing spam.
This is just a short fluff bit, featuring my ocs Antonia Giese, a movie star, and Lex Durand, her stunt double, and oh yeah, they’re madly in love. Antonia is sleeping over at Lex’s tiny apartment, but unluckily for her, Lex is a morning person. They make it work, though.
The cardinal rule of getting up early in the morning was, and had been as long as Lex could remember, don’t turn on the blender.
When she’d lived alone in the tiny one-bedroom apartment, it hadn’t been a concern. Sure, the walls were thin, but the people on the right had a rather yappy dog, and the upstairs neighbors seemed to move furniture around in the dead of night more often than not. But when Antonia had started staying the night after long days of work, she’d been quite firm that the blender was not to be used until they were both fully awake.
Lex had protested, of course. “How am I going to get my morning protein shakes now? You know how much I love my routine.”
“Lex, you wouldn’t know routine if it bit you on the ass and carried you off into the night,” Antonia had responded, unable to keep herself from grinning at Lex’s pretend shock. “You can have your nasty protein shakes when it’s not four in the morning.”
So Lex had offered up a few more joking complaints every once in a while, but the blender stayed clean and the protein shakes were put on pause whenever Antonia stayed overnight. More often than not, they both slept through the early hours of the morning anyway, sharing a light comforter and two pillows as their bodies entwined around one another, breathing deeply in tandem. The press never would have approved, but there were no cameras or flashing lights inside Lex’s second-rate apartment. Antonia had said it was perfect, and it was.
It was a little warmer than usual that morning, though, and on warm mornings like these, Lex was quick to rub the sleep from her eyes and carefully extricate herself from Antonia’s arms, making sure to tuck the blanket back around her so a draft wouldn’t wake her up. There was little use in dragging a brush through her hair in the dark, so she pulled her hair into some semblance of a ponytail and left it at that. There were many hairs out of place, but she didn’t mind. She grabbed leggings and a tank top from a bin across the room, then bent low to press a kiss to Antonia’s forehead. In her sleep, Antonia sighed happily, and Lex smiled before closing the door behind her.
She paused for a glass of water to clear her morning breath, then pulled on her running shoes—nearly falling over while doing so, but catching herself through an awkward hop or two. Dew still clung to the railings as she bounded down the stairs and out onto the sidewalk. The sky was just beginning to lighten, dark blues giving way to a pale purple, with orange cotton candy clouds gleaming near the horizon. Lex rubbed her suddenly cold hands against her thighs to warm the muscle and bent into a few quick stretches, then set off on an evenly paced jog.
Running had never been her favorite exercise, but it was a necessary one. There was no way she’d be able to perform acrobatic stunts or rehearse fight scenes over and over if she didn’t have stamina, and running was an excellent way to build up one form of it. She wasn’t the fastest by any means, but a few miles early in the morning were never unpleasant, especially when the sky was as beautiful as it was.
Lex wove through the city, enjoying the relative quiet of semi-empty streets. Every so often, she passed another runner alongside the road and offered up a smile and a friendly wave. Sometimes it was reciprocated, but most of the time, they were focused on their stride and the music pumping through their earphones. Lex preferred to run without music. It was safer in a busy city, for one, but it also allowed her time to take in her surroundings, to laugh at humorous vanity license plates or to marvel at spindles of orange-turning-pink clouds breezing across the horizon as her steps pounded against the pavement in an even rhythm, breaths coming fast and deep to match her pace.
Pale purple was beginning to fade into bright blue when Lex arrived again on the doorstep of her apartment building, a light sheen of sweat coating her forehead and the back of her neck. Briefly, she considered whether an inevitably cold shower would even be worth it, especially with Antonia still asleep for a few hours, but she was a little gross. That didn’t stop her quiet gasp when the frigid water hit her bare back, though, and it was a relief to pull on some clean, comfortable clothes after drying off.
When she snuck back into her room, attempting to be stealthy, Antonia shifted, and her lips spread into a slow smile as she recognized Lex in the dark. “C’mere,” she murmured, drowsiness evident in her voice, and she pushed the covers aside. Lex obligingly crawled in next to her, and Antonia wrapped her arms around her.
“I suppose I should thank you for showering this time. It’s too comfortable to have to wash the sheets.”
“And too early,” Lex pointed out, leaning her head into the crook of Antonia’s neck.
“Mm,” Antonia agreed. “But at least you didn’t use the blender.” Her eyes fluttered closed again. Lex dragged a light fingertip up Antonia’s back, rubbing slow circles into her shoulders with her thumbs. A mere few hours apart wasn’t enough to keep their bodies from fitting together like threads in a tapestry, breath falling into rhythm as Lex closed her eyes as well.
Outside the curtained window, the sun had risen high in the sky, but for Lex, there was no brighter star than the woman who lay beside her, hair tangled from sleep, sharing her warmth.

❈ Fioretta Gorini, a forgotten yet important figure of the Italian Renaissance was the daughter of professor Antonio Gorini and mistress of Giuliano de Medici, to whom she bore his illegitimate son Giulio, the future Pope Clement VII . The most intresting fact about their love story is that Giulio was born on the same day his father died in tragic circumstances during the Pazzi conspiracy.
❈ It seems that Fioretta was just a nickname while her real name was Antonia or Antoinetta. ❈Judging by some sources she was "the true love of Giuliano de Medici " , the woman who had stollen his heart and not Simonetta Vespucci.
❈ She was also the muse of some important artists of that time like Andrea del Verrocchio (the bust of the widow of Giuliano de Medici " -  sculpted on Dama col mazzolino -1475), Leonardo da Vinci ( Ginevra de Benci) and Sandro Botticelli ( Ritratto di giovane donna-1475) .
❈Some historians are calling her "the widow of Giuliano de Medici "  Therefore I will go further with this and name Fioretta the wife of Giuliano since he secretly married her before his assassination .
And here is the proof : 《" In 1513 some monks and the brother of Fioretta Gorini confirmed the clandestine marriage of the latter with Giuliano de' Medici. Their marriage was recorded in the Regest Leonis X. (n. 4598) for all times. (in: J. Nardi, Le storie della città di Firenze, Firenze 1684, p. 274). "When, in the autumn [1513], there was a question of his [Giulio de' Medici] being made a Cardinal, it was attested by witnesses that a valid marriage had taken place secretly between his father and mother, Floreta, a special deed to that effect being drawn up [Regest. Leonis X., n. 4598] "》

[...] he was edified for hearing for the hundredth time the Mother Abbess describe the Blessed One’s ingenous miracles; at her showing the corner of the dank garden where the saintly nun had suspended in the air a huge stone which the Devil, irritated by her austerity, had flung at her; he was astounded at the sight of the two famous and indecipherable letters framed on the wall of a cell, one to the Devil from Blessed Corbèra to convert him to virtue, and the other the Devil’s reply, expressing, it seems, his regret at not being able to comply to her request[...]
Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, The Leopard, p. 83-84
Isabella Domenica Tomasi was born on May 29th 1645 to Giulio I Duke of Palma and Baron of Montechiaro (and later Prince of Lampedusa) and his wife Rosalia Traina, Baroness of Falconeri and of Terra di Torretta. The Tomasi family was a very devout one, and their children received a strict religious education. The father, Giulio, had been so deeply involved in good works and charity during his lifetime, he gained the nickname of Holy Duke and was posthumously declared Servant of God (like his brother Carlo before him). Except for the heir, Ferdinando, all the children who made into adulthood were destined to be ordained. His daughters Francesca Giovanna Tommasa, Isabella Domenica, Maria Antonia and Alipia Gaetana became nuns. Giuseppe Maria became a priest, later a Cardinal and finally, in 1986, was canonized by Pope John Paul II. When his daughters petitioned him to found a nunnery, Don Giulio didn’t esitate to sacrifice the family mansion (still under construction) in Palma di Montechiaro which was transfomed into the Monastery of The Holy Rosary. At some point the Tomasi couple decided to take a vow of chastity. In 1661 Donna Rosalia joined her daughters and became Sister Maria Seppellita della Concezione, while her husband built another Palace where he moved to pursue an ascetic lifestyle.
Isabella took her vows on October 7th 1660 and changed her name into Maria Crocifissa della Concezione. She consecrated her life to meditation, penitence (included flagellation) and humble activities, always striving to be one with God.
On August 11th 1676 Sister Maria Crocifissa was found lying (or sitting) on her cell’s floor by the other nuns. Her face was covered with ink, and she held a piece of paper in her hand. The text was impossible to decipher since it was a mix of symbols and letters (which somehow resemble to Greek and Arabic characters). The nun declared it was a letter the Devil had personally handed to her to be signed. Of course Maria Crocifissa refused categorically to comply and only wrote ohimè (lit. alas; the only comprehensible word in the text) as response. She also stated the Devil left her two other messages, but she would always refuse to refer their contents. According to her, it wasn’t her first or last encounter with Satan. Before the letter episode, she affirmed the Devil threw at her a stone while she was in the nunnery’s garden. Maria Crocifissa was protected by a sudden apparition of St. Catherine of Siena, who diverted the stone’s trajectory to another part of the garden. The Devil and other evil spirits would keep taunting and tormenting the nun for the rest of her life. She also stated to be able to see Suffering Christ, Our Lady of Sorrow, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Rose of Lima and her Guardian Angel. In particular, Our Lady of Sorrow told her “The Cross will be your seclusion. The Cross has already been established. All that's left is to climb it slowly...to be crucified perfectly”. For centuries, the Devil’s letter would remain an enigma. Only in 2017 the researchers of Ludum Science Center (Misterbianco, province of Catania) claimed to have been able to partly decipher it using a software found in the deepweb. “Perhaps now, Styx is certain” “Since God, Christ and Zoroaster pursue the ancient ways and sewn by humans, Ohimè” “A God, I can feel, who is freeing mortals”. Daniele Abate, head of the Science Center, explains the message is made of Greek, Cyrillic, Runic and Yazdi characters. Abate is convinced Sister Maria Crocifissa suffered from bipolarism or schizophrenia, exacerbated by the oppressive monastic environment and harsh self-imposed penitential practices. Visions about the Devil and evil spirits are indeed very common among people suffering from these kinds of disorders. Making use of her knowledge and culture, the nun then created a new alphabet she used to compose the Devil’s letter. Whether she might have done it intentionally or not, it’s impossible to say.
Sister Maria Crocifissa died on October 16th  1699, Her last words were “Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus”. During her life, she had always suffered poor health, but she welcomed her illnesses as a way to be closer to the Divine. On August 15th 1787, Pope Pius VI proclaimed her Venerable.
On 1955, Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa (a descendant of Sister Maria Crocifissa, and author of the novel Il Gattopardo/The Leopard) visited the Monastery of Palma di Montechiaro. He was so fascinated by his ancestor’s figure, he decided to include her in his novel, changing her name into Blessed Corbèra. From the Corbera family (founders of Santa Margherita di Belice, province of Agrigento) descended the Tomasi family.
