I have been curious to look at a statistical insight into the different Elemental associations people have with the Cardinal Directions. There are 24 different ways that the directions and elements can be grouped together, but tumblr won't allow me to do a poll with 24 options. I could do an individual poll on each element, but I specifically want to look at which pairings of the four elements/directions are the most common, so I'm going to do a Part 1 and a Part 2 for this poll. Together, these will give all the options for how someone might associate the elements and directions together, so if you don't see your particular pairings in this post, then stay tuned for the follow-up poll.

Cardinal Directions

“I think this might be it,” Dean said. They pulled up to the curb in front of a well-maintained, one-story, modernist house from the last century. Dean looked at the numbers on the mailbox and confirmed, “Yup.”

Sam looked at the house skeptically. “You sure?”

“1172 Glenwood. This is it.” Dean gestured and shrugged as he got out of the car.

Sam insisted, “Just saying, it looks a little too neat, you know?”

Dean shrugged again. They crept up to the door, and Dean kept lookout while Sam picked the lock. Once inside, they looked around the quiet rooms with their middle class furniture and tchotchkes. Sam picked up an envelope from the hall table and followed Dean up the stairs.

The beige carpeting muffled their footsteps as they snuck into one of the bedrooms. Dean pulled out his machete and lifted it above the sleeping form.

“Psst!”

Dean turned and looked at Sam in the doorway. He was waving the envelope and motioning Dean to come over.

“What?!” Dean whispered.

Sam pulled Dean into the hallway and showed him the envelope…

After they finished cleaning out the vamp nest at 1172 SOUTH Glenwood, they went to Denny’s for a celebratory stack of pancakes, and they never once talked about the detour to the wrong address.

reading your tags and posts on how you’re always aware of the cardinal directions is so wild to me. i hardly ever think about them and when i do it’s just, like “aw man i gotta drive in the direction of the sun that sucks”. beyond that the cardinal directions mean nothing to me

okay this is like two months old at this point but i'm only seeing it now and tbh i'm still not over it so i'm bringing it back

ever since that post i've been hyperaware of my own awareness of the cardinal directions and what i realized is, my ability to wayfind is almost exclusively tied to me knowing which way is north. every time i've gotten disoriented it's been because i didn't know where north is, regardless of if i was in a familiar area or not. tho tbh i haven't really been in any unfamiliar areas recently so i haven't had a chance to really put that to the test yet lol

i guess my main question/point of confusion is just like. what does your mental map look like. do you have a mental map at all. how do you perceive the world around you. that's more than one question but i feel they're connected cause like?? my mental map is always oriented with north facing up, no matter which way i'm facing. but i know @astraldepths pointed out that for ppl who primarily drive they tend to use GPS which uses relative orientation (faces the direction they're facing) which makes sense and would explain why cardinal directions wouldn't matter as much. as a pedestrian/public transit user my google maps is locked with north facing up as well, and i could totally see that affecting my own mental map.

also where i live there are very large, very visible, very well known geographic markers for both north and west that a lot of people use to orient/place themselves within the city. so it's like, i get why i'm this way, it's just still so hard for me to imagine being any other way

anyway yeah your brain fascinates me and i want to study it in a laboratory setting

Cardinal Directions

As stated in the introduction to this setting, there is a division of the world into the four cardinal directions: North, East, South, and West. These are both cultural, geographical, and supernatural distinctions. Each direction has a guardian deity associated with it. These aren't deities in the sense that they're worshiped, but because they guard and represent the fundamental forces of nature. This comes from both the Greek concept of the four winds, and, much more obviously, the Chinese concept of the Four Symbols. Like some other myths and beings, these are an anomaly: present in all cultures, even ones miles apart, due to their undeniable existence. Minor variations exist though, such as the Westerners usually anthropomorphizing them, or the people of the Center worshiping them in earnest, as each has equal power where they live. If encountered, they are akin to symbols and visions rather than enormous boss monsters. No force can subjugate them to one's will, not even the gods.

Azure Dragon of the East - Guardian of the Eastern Wind, which brings the rains of Spring. Associated with the element of wood, which is plentiful in the East due to its great monsoons feeding the many plants. Seen at dawn, riding the winds over the green-blue seas.

Black Turtle of the North - Guardian of the Northern Wind, which brings the snow and hail of Winter. Associated with the element of water, found everywhere below and above-ground in the Northern reaches. Seen at midnight beneath the glass-still waters of lakes with a snake wrapped around its soft shell.

Vermilion Bird of the South - Guardian of the Southern Wind, which brings the heat of Summer. Associated with the element of fire, which burns the brush of the grasslands with every turn of the sun. Seen at midday as a mirage above the desert heat.

White Tiger of the West - Guardian of the Western Wind, which brings the fogs and chills of Autumn. Associated with the element of metal, found in its greatest abundancy within the West's mantle. Seen at dusk stalking between sentinel pines, searching for ghosts in their barrows.

Worms from the rotting remains of Ymir became the cardinal directions

Odin and his two brothers were in fear that the sky would fall upon them.

Luckily, worms had started to slither out of the rotting remains of the recently murdered Ymir and turned into dwarves.

The brothers grabbed 4 of these newly developed dwarves and had them hold up the sky.

They became known as Nordri (north), Sundri (south), Austri (east) and Vestri (West).
