1898 – John Beverley Nichols (d.1983), was an author, playwright, journalist, composer, and public speaker.
Between his first book, the novel Prelude, published in 1920, and his last, a book of poetry, Twilight, published in 1982, Nichols wrote more than 60 books and plays. Besides novels, mysteries, short stories, essays and children's books, he wrote a number of non-fiction books on travel, politics, religion, cats, parapsychology, and autobiography. He wrote for a number of magazines and newspapers throughout his life, the longest being weekly columns for the London Sunday Chronicle newspaper (1932–1943) and Woman's Own magazine (1946–1967).
A book about Nichols' city garden near Hampstead Heath in London, Green Grows the City, published in 1939, was another big best seller. That book introduced Arthur R. Gaskin, who was Nichols' manservant from 1924 until Gaskin's death in 1966. Gaskin was a popular character, who also appeared in the succeeding gardening books.
A later trilogy written between 1951 and 1956 documents Nichols's travails renovating Merry Hall (Meadowstream), a Georgian manor house in Agates Lane, Ashtead, Surrey, where Nichols lived from 1946 to 1956. These books often feature his gifted but laconic gardener "Oldfield". Nichols's final trilogy is referred to as "The Sudbrook Trilogy" (1963–1968) and concerns his late 18th-century attached cottage at Ham, (near Richmond), Surrey.
Nichols wrote on a wide range of topics, always looking for "the next big thing." As examples, he ghostwrote Dame Nellie Melba's 1925 "autobiography" Memories and Melodies (he was at the time her personal secretary - his 1933 book Evensong was believed based on aspects of her life). In 1966 he wrote A Case of Human Bondage about the marriage and divorce of writer William Somerset Maugham and his interior-decorator wife, Syrie, which was highly critical of Maugham. Father Figure, which appeared in 1972 and in which he described how he had tried to murder his alcoholic and abusive father, caused a great uproar and several people asked for his prosecution. His book about spiritualism was not well received, which disappointed him.
He was homosexual and is thought to have had a brief affair with the war poet Siegfried Sassoon. Nichols's long-term companion was Cyril Butcher, the main beneficiary of Nichols's will, amounting to £131,750.

1949 – John Curry (d.1994) had a combination of athleticism and grace which brought him enormous success in figure skating. A five-time champion in his native Britain, he also won gold medals in world and Olympic competition. Although it was a potentially career-destroying move, Curry came out publicly as a gay man before the 1976 Winter Olympics, becoming one of the very few elite athletes to come out while still competing. Throughout his career, he consistently spoke candidly about his sexual orientation.
Curry was born in Birmingham, England, where his father was an engineer and factory-owner. As a small child Curry became fascinated with dance, but his father considered dancing inappropriate for boys and firmly vetoed the idea of dance lessons. He did, however, allow young Curry to take up figure skating at age seven. With his natural aptitude and dedication, Curry won his first competition a year later. He continued to have success and went on to win the British junior title in 1967. Although Curry's father had agreed to let the boy become a figure skater, he showed little enthusiasm for his son's athletic endeavors. Only twice did he see Curry skate.
After his father's death, Curry, then sixteen, moved to London, where he began taking the long-denied dance lessons and worked part-time to eke out enough money to pay for coaching for his skating. Curry placed second in the 1968 and 1969 British championships and won the first of his five national titles in 1970. Like his contemporary Toller Cranston of Canada, with whom he shared a number of traits, including homosexuality, Curry suffered from the prejudice of judges against his skating style, which emphasized grace and artistry, and which some considered "feminine," even though Curry also demonstrated mastery in jumping and other physically demanding aspects of the sport.
Tumblr media
Curry bare-chested
Curry's glory year was 1976. After a narrow victory over Robin Cousins in the British championships, he went on to win gold medals in the European Championships, the Olympic Games, and the World Championships. Curry had the honor of carrying the English flag at the opening ceremony of the Olympics, and after his triumph at the games, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire. He was also named England's sporting personality of the year. Curry had come out publicly as a gay man prior to the Olympics, and upon his return to Britain he spoke openly about his sexuality. Curry turned professional after his win at the World Championships. Saying that he "never could see the point of spending 12 years training to go dress up in a Bugs Bunny suit," he turned down lucrative offers from established ice shows and formed his own company, one that emphasized dance.
His Ice Dancing show was a hit on Broadway as well as in London, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. In his production Curry sought to explore the relationship between skating and dance. Twyla Tharp was among the choreographers with whom he collaborated. Curry also did choreography for the first show and took an increasing role in subsequent productions, choreographing fifteen of twenty-four numbers in the 1984 version of the show. These included Johann Strauss's Skater's Waltz, which Curry performed with JoJo Starbuck, and an ensemble piece to Aaron Copland's Rodeo.

Curry sporting a nice bunch
In addition to his skating career, Curry appeared in a number of plays, including a 1980 Broadway production of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe's Brigadoon that was choreographed by Agnes de Mille. Curry's performance of the "Sword Dance" was a highlight of the show. Curry saw AIDS take a toll in the skating world. "It is hard to watch people in that situation, and it was frightening when people started to become ill," he said, adding "You start to think 'When is it going to be my turn?'" It was in late 1987 that Curry found out that he, too, was HIV-positive. The following year he participated in Skating for Life, a show to help fund AIDS research. His final skating performance in 1989 was part of another AIDS benefit.
Diagnosed with full-blown AIDS in 1991, Curry returned to England to spend his last years with his elderly mother. He died on April 15, 1994 in Binton, Warwickshire. Curry was held in high regard by the skating community. World and Olympic champion Peggy Fleming described him as "totally devoted to the art of skating," and Olympic medalist Paul Wylie lauded him as "the ultimate skater." Because of his artistic interpretation of the music of classical composers, Curry has been called the "Nureyev of the ice." He was also much admired for his candor and courage in coming out despite the potential risk to his athletic career. Curry was always forthright in this regard. In a 1992 interview he stated, "I never pretended not to be homosexual, ever

Mayford, Massachussetts is a city in Suffolk, County, just forty-five-minutes southeast of Quincy. It is situated inside of a deep, depressed marshland, and flanked by steep embankments as well as dark primeval forests. Mayford and its tall colonial architecture are, however, easily missed by the highway despite its densely-populated area. A very large sign with the city's seal and flag, atop the highway embankment that straddles the northern edge of the city, helps to bring attention to the historic but hidden location.
Originally an English artillery fort, it became an information post for the United Kingdom during the Revolutionary War, where couriers and military attaches could be hidden away in the highly-defensible and tucked-away marshy place. After a short but complex espionage and deception campaign led to colonial American forces acquiring the fort, it was quickly decided that the families of the military would be safest in the quiet and secret area, and barracks and houses were built to introduce them to a secure and private life.
After the war, the fort and its surrounding development were unified under a single township. The town was named Mayford, after the village in Surrey, England. Charles Babington Ridgewell, Mayford's then-newly elected mayor, chose the name to honour his wife's mother's family, who were all from Surrey. Between 1785 and 1801, the town enjoyed rapid growth, prosperity, and development. This is owed to its many and varied taverns and coaching inns, all of which brought in a large and constant travelling population of visitors and temporary residents. Some of these coaching inns were so successful, and became so large, that they had made more money on their own every month than the entire commonwealth did in the year 1810.
Leading up to just before the Civil War, Mayford intermittently competed with the prosperities of nearby Furnace Mill and Monmouthshire, but would, even after being sacked by religious zealots in 1871, always remain the busier and more prosperous of the three.
Today, Mayford is known as a time capsule for colonial American architecture. Only 3% of its original buildings have been lost, with most being lost during raids and looting in 1871. This is largely in part because the thick and wet marshland, and because the demands for stable and clean surroundings to meet the needs of constant tourism, has become the core focus of every campaigning mayor since Charles Ridgewell. In the city's attempts to maintain its buildings in the swampish and humid environment, it has preserved much of its entirety, and now the city retains a standing constitution that demands that each building be serviced and kept in premium condition. Costs for private homes and business are covered by the city of Mayford's municipal budget. Now, and since 1985, Mayford has been voted Cleanest City in the Nation, drawing in many seeking property and land in a city that guarantees all maintenance needs and costs be covered.
Mayford is considered to be a college town and residential resort, with many luxury homes and apartments always being constructed for Boston's wealthy and elite to hide quietly away. Many of the younger, more permanent residents go to the nearby Mill University, an extremely popular and widely-well-regarded accredited university that teaches many niche or rare career interests, such as undersea welding and experimental applied physics courses.
One of the city's original coaching inn's, Winn's Authority, has become one of the most successful bars in the world, bringing in $2,000,000 annually thanks to its original décor, rotating burlesque shows, and the massive central bar hosting its One-Hundred-and-One spirits menu.

Alan Dowson: The Non-League Promotion Specialist
For clubs outside of the Premier league, each season starts with one ultimate goal, to be promoted to the league above. In non-league football there are few with greater pedigree in this than current Dartford FC boss, Alan Dowson. Dowson holds the enviable record of being promoted with each and every club he’s managed throughout his 19-year coaching career. Meaning he has earned a reputation as a non-league promotion specialist.
A tough tackling centre half in his playing days, Dowson turned out for the likes of Millwall and Fulham before eventually beginning his career in coaching via a player-manager role at Walton and Hersham FC. It was here that Dowson claimed his first promotion as a manager which would ultimately set him on his way to becoming one of the most sought-after bosses in the non-league game.
Tumblr media
Dowson spent 11 years at Walton and Hersham as a player and then a manager and it’s a spell that he looks back on with great fondness. “Obviously being given my first opportunity to coach a side is something that was absolutely massive for me and to do it with a club that I’d spent such a long time at as a player meant it was a very important time in my career.” During his time at the The Swans, Dowson led the Surrey based outfit to promotion from the Isthmian league, in his first season at the helm. Although he didn’t remain at the club for long, resigning in January of 2007 to join Kingstonian. It was here that Dowson enjoyed his longest stint as manager of a club, remaining at The K’s for 7 years. The club achieved promotion in Dowson’s second full season in charge after being crowned champions of the Isthmian Division One South. Dowson comments that his promotion winning campaigns at Kingstonian and Walton and Hersham gave him ‘a great deal of belief’ that he could achieve similar success higher up the non-league ladder. Kingstonian became stable in the Isthmian premier and narrowly missed out on further success with playoff defeats at the semi-final and final stage during the four seasons Dowson took charge of in the division.
Tumblr media
Having resigned at the end of the 2013-2014 season Dowson was offered the opportunity to take over at 7th tier Hampton and Richmond Borough. Dowson explained his reasoning for taking the job stating “It was a club we felt had obvious potential to move upwards and when the job came up it was a pretty straightforward decision to be honest.” The potential that Dowson and his staff saw was realised as The Beavers romped to the title in Dowson’s third season losing only seven games and scoring 105 goals in the process, with now QPR winger Jamal Lowe starring throughout. Not content with stabilisation during his first stint in the National league south, Dowson guided Hampton and Richmond to consecutive playoff finishes losing to Ebbsfleet at the semi final stage and then to Braintree on penalties in the following years promotion final. Dowson notes his time at The Beavers as being “absolutely vital in his career” as it enhanced his reputation to the level that he was suited by the likes of Woking and Dartford.
Having been poached by Woking following The Cards relegation from The National League, Dowson oversaw an immediate return to the top tier of non-league football after a 1-0 playoff final victory over Welling United. An FA cup run in the same season saw Woking earn a tie with then premier league side Watford which they lost by only two goals to nil. A first season back in the National league saw Woking finish in 10th place. However two consecutive seasons operating in the lower half of mid-table saw Dowson sacked for the first and only time in his managerial career. Dowson however, looks back on his time at The Cards with a lot of pride. “Getting promotion at the first attempt and then being able to stabilise back in the national league was something that I feel me and my staff are very proud of and had it not been for disruptions due to the pandemic, I certainly feel we could’ve taken the club further.”
Since his dismissal from Woking, Alan Dowson has taken up the challenge of leading Dartford FC back to the National league. The Darts have been in and around the promotion places since their relegation in the 13-14 season however have consistently fallen short, often ending with heartbreak in the playoffs. At time of writing Dartford sit handsomely in 2nd place and despite the league title being out of reach, The Darts are well placed for a good run in the playoffs. Upon arriving at Dartford, Dowson linked up with football legend, Martin Tyler, as well as former Woking winger Christian Jolley who he then hired as his assistant manager. It is Jolley’s first time as an assistant coach but it is a challenge he is relishing. “It’s been great, especially working alongside the gaffer who I know really well. It’s a fantastic club here at Dartford and the atmosphere in the squad is excellent.” Jolley was part of the Woking side that Alan Dowson lead to promotion in 2019 meaning he is well aware of Dowson’s promotion magic. “Being able to work alongside a manager who is so consistent at gaining promotion gives so much confidence to not only the squad but the staff working alongside him.”
Tumblr media
Dowson’s promotion expertise could be exactly what Dartford need to end their run of playoff heartbreak and gain promotion back to the The National League. Only time will tell whether Alan Dowson continues his 100% promotion record at The Darts but with the CV that Dowson holds you sense it is a matter of when not if Dartford are playing National league football again. Regardless of the outcome this season at Dartford, with four promotions at his four previous clubs it is obvious why Dowson has got a reputation of being a promotion specialist.

The career coach creates a sounding board and inspires you to keep going when you feel you want to quit. He/she can help to restore your confidence and motivate you.
 3. Provide honest and unbiased feedback:
At some point in your life, you just need to hear the truth from someone you trust. Generally, we turn to family or family for advice but don't get the feeling of honest feedback as they don't want to hurt your feelings or give you advice based on their own experience. On the other hand, the career coach serves as a neutral third party to whom you can expect a piece of constructive and independent advice. A good career coach will identify your weakness and make a plan according to that only. As a result, you can make a constructive decision based on honest and unbiased feedback. By this, you can develop realistic solutions to any situation.
4. Set clear career goals:
Are you uncertain about your career goals? Then you should try a career coaching session. This will guide you in the best way possible and generate optimal results. A personal trainer is responsible for providing direction, correct paths and support whenever and wherever it is needed. Also, the coach will review the long-term and short term goals and help them to achieve them.
These mentioned points are some of the core benefits of career coaching. If you are from Surry and looking for the best career coaching from Surry, you contact Mary Andrews. From the Archives: Dear Uncle Emile...
On October 2nd 1948, one day after her 13th birthday, Julie Andrews sat down at her family home in Surrey and penned a heartfelt letter of thanks to theatre impresario, Emile Littler. The influential magnate had just cast Julie as the juvenile lead in his big 1948 Christmas pantomime, Humpty Dumpty at the London Casino and the youngster was brimming with chirpy delight.
“I am awfully glad you are having me as ‘Humpty Dumpty’”, she writes, “On Sunday, Auntie Joan asked me what I would like for Christmas. I tried to think of something, but nothing could be better than being ‘Humpty Dumpty’” (Littler 1948, n.p.).
Granted, the letter was likely coaxed, if not coached, by Julie’s enterprising parents. And the fact it was reprinted a few weeks later in Littler’s annual Pantomime Pie publication, a seasonal showcase of his current and coming attractions, suggests it might even have been commissioned. Nevertheless, Julie’s guileless expressions of effusive gratitude were far from hollow sentiment.
Humpty Dumpty came at a critical juncture in the performer’s early career. Her star-making run in Starlight Roof was coming to a close and it was unclear what her next career step might be. Indeed, to hear Julie tell it, the pint-sized ‘prima donna in pigtails’ feared there might not even be a next step:
“Because of the County Council laws, I was only allowed to perform in Starlight Roof for one year, and that year flew by. On the day of my last performance, I was so choked with sadness, I could barely sing. The company gathered at the side of the stage and applauded and cheered...I remember rushing past them in floods of tears and sobbing my heart out in my dressing room. I honestly thought that was the end of my career, the end of all the fun, and I would never work again. I recognised, quite sensibly, that I might just be a flash in the pan” (Andrews, 87-88).
Enter Emile Littler to dry those tears. Popularly dubbed “King of the Pantomimes”, Littler was part of a theatrical dynasty that ruled the West End for decades (Pedrick, 8). Together with brother Prince and sister Blanche, the Littlers built up an empire of theatres that, by the mid-40s, accounted for over half the major houses nationwide (Elsom, 645). As Julie recalls:
“Emile and Prince Littler were impresario brothers who became the most powerful figures in the West End and the provinces, with a virtual monopoly on producing musicals and pantomimes throughout the country. Prince was by far the better known, having become chairman of Moss Empires in 1947, which encompassed the biggest theater circuit in England. If one booked a Moss Empires tour, it was considered an “A” tour” (Andrews 2008, 93).
Julie had already been semi-initiated into the Littler circuit with Starlight Roof which played at the London Hippodrome, the jewel in the crown of the Moss Empires chain. Her subsequent casting in Humpty Dumpty cemented what would become a long professional association with the Littlers. Possibly because he was more involved in the production side of affairs, Emile Littler became a particularly significant figure in Julie’s early years. The two would work again closely on the 1951 pantomime, Aladdin and, in 1958, Emile and his wife, Cora, served as official escorts to Julie when she was presented to the Queen at a Buckingham Palace Garden Party.
All of which makes it so charming that the 13-year-old Julie should have written such an affectionate letter to her “dear Uncle Emile...”

Do you need Hypnotherapy in Harley Street?
Hypnotherapy is also known as guided hypnosis, which is basically a form of psychotherapy used for relaxation, extreme concentration, and intense attention. This is to achieve a heightened state of consciousness or mindfulness to give penitent a mental calmness. You can call it a state where the individual has no control over himself and isn't aware of what is happening.
This therapy is considered as an alternative medicine with the purpose of utilizing one’s mind to help reduce or overcome a variety of issues, such as psychological distress, insomnia, phobias, stress, and unhealthy, destructive, or dangerous habits like smoking and or drinking, drugs etc. The hypnotherapy aims to create an optimistic and positive change in a body, while he/she is in a state of unconsciousness or slumber, a partially sleep state.
Benefits of Hypnotherapy
Cure Anxiety Issues: Hypnotherapy or say hypnosis helps to cure anxiety by encouraging the body to activate its natural relaxation response process through the use of a phrase or nonverbal cue, slowing breathing with lowering blood pressure and instilling an overall sense of well-being. This process controls the patient's mind and cures anxiety issues.
It can ease down stress:Stress is the most common problem emerging nowadays. To reduce stress, hypnosis is one of the easiest ways to achieve deep relaxation. Hypnotherapy has some very useful results. This is a procedure to enhance your health and well-being, leaving you feeling calmer, more positive, and refreshed.
Weight Loss: Hypnosis has some proven results in weight loss, too, with a weight management plan and stopping the habit of overeating. Hypnosis can help you change your attitude about weight loss, diet, and exercise. This therapy can also help you learn how to manage your weight as it pushes you to work towards your goals. In addition to this, it also helps with self-esteem and body image and encourages you to accept your body at each stage of your weight loss.
It can help you achieve success: By healing, you are emotionally mind trained to achieve success in your life, whether it is about finances, love life, creativity, motivation. It improves your confidence and self-esteem or to see and experience your best possible future. Anything is possible.
Help to sleep better: If you are not getting enough sleep or having insomnia, hypnotherapy can help most prominently. Not only this, but it can also help you in decision-making and memory, and it can lead to chronic health problems such as heart disease, obesity, and depression. With the right trainer, you will feel better in mental stress and will have a better sleep.
Treat Depression: Hypnotherapy helps in adjusting your thought processes in order to eliminate negative thoughts and cures depression. People suffering from depression or bipolar diseases have seen optimistic results with hypnotherapy and started using it as an alternative against pills.
Improves Immune System Response: The hypnotherapy detoxifies your soul. So it cleans your body internally and nourishes the immune system. Most people, especially the young generation today, recognize that stress has a negative impact on the immune system. If you are having stress for the long term, you have more chances to become ill and take longer to recover (from illness or more invasive procedures) than people who have less stressful lives. To cleanse your body as soon as possible.

PORTLAND, ME  – The Maine Mariners announced the signing of defenseman Jordan Klimek on Tuesday, a week after acquiring his rights in a trade with the Kansas City Mavericks. Last Monday, the Mariners dealt defensemen Derek Pratt and Garrett Cecere to Kansas City in exchange for the rights Klimek.
“We are very excited to add Klimek to our defensive core,” said head coach Riley Armstrong. “He is a good skater and puck mover which will help in breaking the puck out of our zone.”
Klimek will celebrate his 24th birthday this coming Sunday. He was born in Langley, British Columbia, where he played his initial midget and junior hockey. With the Valley West Hawks of the BC Hockey Major Midget League, Klimek led the league in points by a defenseman in the 2011-12 season. He registered 42 points (8 goals, 34 assists) in 40 games.
