May 2023 Dear friends and followers, It is with mixed emotions that I write this update to you. As you may have noticed, my posts on this travel blog, ericotrips have been scarce lately. The truth is, I recently made a career transition into a role as a customer success officer for a cybersecurity organization in Lagos, Nigeria! It’s been a pretty amazing exposure so far, and I’m loving every…

🦋 Falling In and Out of Love 🧡(with your job)
a.k.a. how to recover from burnout in 3 steps~ 🍰
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
My job has taken me on an emotional rollercoaster lately and it got me thinking about how much I invest in my career the way I invest in my personal relationships. The advice I've gotten to address the stress/anxiety I feel has always been to detach and disconnect more, but the more I try (and fail) to do that, the worse I feel and perform. So instead of fighting it, I reflected on my relationship with my work as I would a personal relationship and implemented some of my realizations. It seems to be working well, so of course I wanted to share~ 😉
🏇 Do more of what you're good at
People tend to naturally take on certain roles in different relationships. The mom-friend, the mood-maker, the hype-upper, etc. Being the person you naturally gravitate towards being anyway can make you feel more needed and appreciated because you're using the specific talents and skills that make you unique.
You might not know what you're going to be good at. It might even be something you think you're really bad at. For me, despite being an introvert, I was given the opportunity to take on an incredibly rewarding project coordinator role. So if you're willing to push yourself, be sure to communicate that.
🍊 Communication is key
No one is a mind-reader. And the tendency when having a hard time to shut down and clam up is very strong. A good partner (or friend or boss) may notice and take action to help you, but you can make both your lives easier by speaking up. It's not complaining, it's just taking responsibility for the relationship.
I was very daunted at first because work doesn't seem like the right place for "feelings" to exist, but the fact is that you're a human, your colleagues are all human. Talking things out can help make sure that no one (me) takes feedback on the project personally, and that everyone (me) has clearer guidance on how to take their careers to the next level.
🔥 What motivates you
Working for the next promotion is like studying for the grades or getting close to someone for superficial reasons. But if you're motivated by wanting to learn (about the topic or the person), the promotion (or grades or deeper, more fulfilling relationship) will follow naturally.
Sometimes talking to someone about your motivations can help crystalized them. Feeling like I had no motivation to work, I gave my manager a very honest five minute word-vomit that she, with absolutely no judgement, distilled into simply: "Oh, so you value human connection and feeling useful." Being able to put names to what I'm looking for means I'm better equipped to actively seek them out, especially when they sometimes goes missing in the busyness of the work day.
Tumblr media
💌: Like any relationship, how I feel about my job will ebb and flow with time, but viewing it within this framework of "a relationship" helps me better accept that somehow. Hope it can help you too! ☺️ How do you like/tend to see your job? How do you stay motivated? (Genuinely asking because I never know how long these little strategies of mine are going to last due to my novelty-seeking nature 😅)

I am so fucking sick of living with my roommate and his fuck ass boyfriend. Also watching my roommate burn every single one of his (already rather minimal, I might add) bridges for this guy is also kind of painful but also his relationship with me is one of said bridges so I'm almost past the point of even feeling bad for him lmao
#i have had to piss for probably the better part of an hour now#because they decided to take a shower together and have been in there for well OVER an hour now#and this is a nightly occurence atp sometimes MULTIPLE times a day#we have one bathroom.... can yall not be considerate enough to not be in there for up to TWO HOURS AT A TIME???#also it's such a waste of fucking water....#idk we've hit a point where i literally hear the bf doing anything and i get pissed off#but also tell me why i'm sitting in my room (which shares a wall with the bathroom) and i can hear this man hacking and spitting shit up#and this is also something that happens multiple times a day#like.... dude.... why are you spitting up toothpaste so fucking loudly oh my fucking god#but yeah no i'm like my roommate's only friend atp and he's about to not have me lmao like we're about to reach#'i'm cutting you off when i move out' levels of me being pissed off with this whole situation type shit#and apparently the bf convinced him to come out to his family which his mom was chill which is good#his dad's side of the family though....? not great. and my roommate KNEW that would be the case cuz we'd talked about it before#also love that my roommate has constantly talked about moving out of the city we live in because he hates and also there's no good career#opportunities for him here (which is true)#and now. MAGICALLY. he's like 'idk i think it'd be best for me to stay here'#like oh my GOD???? are you hearing yourself???? are you fucking stupid???? you fucking hate it here???#but sure throw your life away and ruin all your meaningful relationships for a guy you met six months ago jfc#and the thing is i *know* my roommate we've been close CLOSE friends for nearly a decade now#i know he is not like this.... like yeah he's being insane by allowing this but also i know these aren't the kinds of decisions he would ma#and also i know he wouldn't treat me like this all on his own#it's the deranged fucking control freak of a guy he decided to date and my roommate has too many of his own issues to put his foot down#about certain things and tell the guy no so he's just allowing him to completely take over his life#and fuck everything up until the bf is the only thing he has left once it's all said and done#and yeah. it's painful to watch. but also wtf am i supposed to do because obviously my opinion is not respected nor wanted regarding this#that has been made PAINFULLY clear#ugh this is so fucking horrendous#what is it with ppl who start to date someone and then go clinically fucking insane and destroy their lives all for this one person#who. realistically. they barely know in comparison to all the other ppl in their life#like explain it to me jfc

how to exit your lazy era — level up, stay motivated and make 2024 your best year🕯️
Tumblr media
Firstly why do we even get stuck in our lazy era?
no motivation
you just faced a major failure
not seeing the results you want after working for so long
a way of procrastinating
an easy way to put away all your important task aside
“It’s easy to not do anything in life. It doesn’t even require any effort whatsoever.”
How to overcome this?
Plan your days earlier
Honestly we often hear people giving all sort of tips and tricks to be productive, but the thing is nothing works unless you have a vision for how your day is going to look like. Didn’t they say this?
“Visualization is the key to manifestation.”
2. Start your day with a boost of motivation
This is coming from a personal experience of mine. The only way I overcome my morning sickness was actually by quickly hitting the play button of my favorite motivational podcast as soon as I switch off my alarm. Now it feels like an autopilot mode. For real, try it out.
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” — Jim Ryun
3. Do what you love first thing first
Game-changer. It is one of the prime reason why I LOVE (not like) but LOVE getting up early after discovering the main hack of morning routine which is to do something that truly excites you to your very core.
It could be painting, reading, dancing, journaling, writing, singing, working out, walking, sitting outside sipping your favorite coffee, walking your dog, or literally not even doing anything. Whatever that soothes you, calms your soul and rejuvenates your being. BOOM! That’s exactly what you need to do as soon as you’re up.
For me personally, I love meditating, reading while sipping my coffee and just spending time with nature. The serenity and tranquility can’t be put into words to be honest!
“Slow morning is the recipe to my productivity for real.”
4. Sweating it out
Have you ever been in a situation (I'm sure we all have been in this one) where your body feels sluggish after lunch probably in the late noon? YES! It feels so horrible like you can’t keep your eyes open without consuming doses of caffeine.
Plus working from home is becoming a norm after the pandemic, therefore being stagnant is becoming more of a common trait that binds all of us together. Sitting still in front of your PC, sending emails through your handphone, recording content and et cetera.
This constant stagnation is actually preventing the daily movement our body needs to rejuvenate. Therefore, when we don’t get it that’s when the laziness kicks in. We do know the root problem right now and the root solution would be to move your body as often as you can.
Working out doesn’t need to fit into this standard practice social media has eluded us all by the frame of being in the gym. Honestly there’s more than that.
Hike
Run
Jog
Stroll
Swim
Sauna
As long as you are sweating, you’re good my friend.
5. Vision board
Vision board is one of the easiest, accessible and FUN thing you can do to get yourself out of the rut. I don’t think so we need to go all around again to get the gist of vision board but it would be incomplete if I don’t share this secret with you.
Make a physical and a digital board. The physical one plays a role to be sitting in a space where you spend most of your time at. For instance, your office, work-studio, hostel and et cetera.
And the digital one is as important as the physical one because most of the time we are indulged or I would say obliged to our gadjets these days. Therefore, by setting your vision board as your lock screen wallpaper is definitely going to give you the sense of awakening your mind needs whenever you feel you’re slacking off.
PS: Pinterest is a great tool you can start off with.
6. Use your bank balance as a source of motivation
This is such a good way to actually get you moving. It’s a source of trigger that makes you question yourself like:
How am I supposed to achieve all of my goals on the vision board if I am not taking any sort of action from my side?
That million-dollar home, vacation and experience is not going to come alive if you’re just sitting and wishing for it.
7. Read self help books
I am sure everybody who’s legit on
Medium
platform is an avid-reader. I am not going to speak about the power of books because you know it all. The key is just to pick the right books according to your current life’s situation.
The main gist today is to help you exit your lazy era. So here are some book recommendations from my side.
Atomic Habit by James Clear
Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill
Man’s Search for Meaning Viktor E. Frankl
The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason
Meditations by Marcus Aurelius
The Miracle Equation by Hal Elrod
Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz
The Concise 48 Laws of Power by Robert Greene
The 5 Second Rule by Mel Robbins
Think Like A Monk by Jay Shetty
The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle
Stillness is the key by Ryan Holiday
PS: What’s your favorite self-help book? Reply to this.
Stick till the very end because I am sharing with you the main HACK that nobody talks about.
8. Design your environment in a way that motivates you
We all have heard the phrase how your environment influences you. The least you could do is be conscious of how powerful your social circle is, the people whom you hangout with, the people whom you work with, the people you choose to have relationships with and the place you choose to live in.
It’s these little things that makes the most difference in your life at the end of the day.
9. Step out if that’s what you need
Honestly, a change of environment is what you need sometimes. Our body, out entire being recognizes when we are stuck in the same space for quite some time and this could be the #1 reason why you’ve been procrastinating. Probably you could do this:
Go to your favorite restaurant/café
Work from the library
Honestly choose a spot where you feel you could really maximize your potential and somewhere that actually motivates you to step up. Do better!
10. Allow yourself to be lazy at times
AHHHH! This is the magic pill I was speaking about. I realized nobody seems to tell you this but let’s be real. The only way to exit your lazy era is by giving yourself room to actually be lazy. You can’t expect yourself to transform overnight. You can’t expect to be productive 24/7. You can’t expect yourself to meet all the high standards you’ve set yourself up to.
And I want you to know this. It’s okay to be lazy sometimes. It’s okay to catch yourself not doing anything sometimes. But always remember this.
You shall only reward yourself to be lazy when you’ve absolutely fulfilled the promise you’ve made. The tasks you need to complete. The assignments you need to submit. The thesis you need to work on. The presentation you need to deliver.
Trust me if you implement all of the above habits, you would realize this:
“It’s the small changes in your daily life that you needed all along for your long-term success.”

Sending love. Hope you’re okay.
Oh! If this is because of the MRI I mentioned, fear not -- it was a totally precautionary procedure, and I already got the results and they're in the clear. It's actually another box checked on my journey to top surgery next month (!!). I'm genetically high-cancer risk and have been talking to my surgeons about an approach that will be both gender-affirming and minimize my risk of problems later on.
That said, I will take this chance to say to my followers!! If you, too, are someone with a scary family history of breast cancer and are contemplating top surgery, there are options open to you! I knew it was a real risk for me and was able to get genetic testing covered by my insurance before talking to my surgeons, and my top surgeon then talked with me about the various options I had at my initial consult. I'm specifically opting for a procedure that's a little more intense than a standard gender-affirming surgery but not quite a full double masectomy, and it will be done jointly by two surgeons, one who specializes in gender-affirming procedures and one who usually works with cancer patients and/or patients looking to have preventative surgeries.
Anyways not to throw my medical history at the internet, I just feel really strongly about this, in part because I've had multiple people I've talked to about my own top surgery process tell me they had similar worries and didn't know there were options for people looking to combine gender affirmation with preventative care. I want to watch out for my fellow trans and gender non-conforming folks, especially considering how much the healthcare system can suck for us, and there really are health professionals who take this sort of thing into account with their patients!

I'm emo lately :)))
Read this as the Palmetto holding Deborah captive inside the 'medicine' of her Little Debbies and QVC line, not stand-up as a whole. I couldn't quite fit in the specifics. As for Ava, her 'medicine' is her insatiable desire to prove herself, especially when no one is listening. By coming together, Ava and Deb can stop using their respective 'medicines' and rely on each other for support and praise... and maybe realize their strengths aren't so different after all.

Toscanini's old music teacher, Frau! She's that kind of wealthy where she has a big house and jewelry and fur coats left over from when she was a famous singer decades ago, but she's also eating rice and peanut butter three times a week because that doesn't translate into money now. Reacts with horror to the idea of selling or pawning anything, even temporarily.
She's normally very patient with students, but will pitch fits if she thinks they're deliberately slacking or - even worse - only signed up to get close to someone who used to be famous and don't actually care about learning their instrument.

Niceology Lesson 64
If you're looking to hire someone for a job, you might post that job on Indeed or LinkedIn or some other job site. How about this: post the fucking salary for the job! That's a really nice thing to do! I'm not sure if people are aware of this, but the salary of a job is a crucial aspect to a job. It's important information to have. I just think it would be really a nice thing to do, listing the salary.
A lot of the time they say the salary is "competitive." The fuck? Oh, it's competitive? Lotta things are competitive, doesn't mean they're good. The Detroit Pistons are competitive, and they're made up of competitive players, but they're the worst team in the NBA right now. Maybe the salary for this potential job is competitive, and it goes out there and competes against all the other salaries, and it gets its ass kicked.
Sometimes they put a range, which can be okay. They'll say the salary is 55,000-60,000, and that's fine. I'm grateful for that. That's a nice thing to do. Even a slightly bigger range like 50,000-60,000 is fine by me. But you can't just throw a range on there and pretend that you're being nice. I once saw a range of 60,000-120,000. It wasn't even a sales position where you could have a huge range from commissions. That's not nice, man. What kind of information is that? I hope you realize how different my life would be making 120,000 a year vs. 60,000. That's not an acceptable range. Come on, man.
Just post the salary, man. Just be nice for once.
