My least favorite things about anti- UBI discourse is always the techbros whining that "nobody is going to work anymore! People will just watch Netflix all day!" and I have 2 responses:
Tumblr media
1) Who the fuck cares. Who the fuck cares what people do with their time! That's kind of the fucking point!
2) People aren't going to stop laboring. Housework (look, it's right there in the word!) will still need to be done. So will maintenance on our homes and personal spaces. Children will still need carers, as will the elderly and disabled. There are millions of examples of ~work~ that we do all the time, uncompensated, that won't suddenly stop because we aren't forced to sell our labor to provide corporation's profits.
I'm not surprised that what is traditionally women's work is invisible to these dipshits, but it never fails to anger me.
Anyway. Join the IWW.

Did you know that carer's allowance for "unpaid carers" in the UK works out at £1.99/ hour at best and 73% of paid care workers earn less than the living wage. [sources: link and link].
Most care workers who make short visits to several clients aren't paid for travel time, despite it being a big part of their job, and care workers who provide sleep in shifts aren't legally entitled to minimum wage, except for time spent awake to provide care. (sources: link and link).
One of my carers is over 65 and works multiple jobs but can't afford to retire and I know so many paid care workers who work 70-80hrs+ per week and still struggle to make ends meet.
Carers who are working too many hours, eating badly, sleep deprived, reliant on caffeine and worried about money are at massive risk of developing their own health problems and burning out. There's also an increased risk they'll make a mistake which could cause someone harm.
The more carers leave the profession, the more other carers have to work longer hours in worse conditions.
Carers' pay is a feminist issue, a class issue, a disability rights issue, an anti-racist issue, and an anti-xenophobia issue. Better carers' pay helps everyone.

If you are undiagnosed but sincerely think you are disabled after doing all the research and stuff I love and support you.
If you are diagnosed I love and support you.
If you are a carer who actually cares and doesn’t just want clout I love and support you.

Non-verbal episode this evening. Had to phone up the care agency to cancel tonight's carer. Force myself to speak to cancel it. Made everything worse. Person who answered phone had a go at me, complained about me asking to change things to arrange different times when I'm not just back from work and not functioning.
So instead of an hour of good sensory things to come down, entire evening of stuck in shutdown and not able to talk,

Having to have help when cooking can be incredibly annoying- I know it keeps me safe but I dislike the fact I can't really cook for myself anymore independently. But sometimes it's nice. With my aunty being my carer I like to think of it as a bonding experience, and she only steps in if I really need the help. It means I get to do something I enjoy, in company that I trust and know that I'm completely safe in the event hat something does go wrong.

I'm Sick of Sunak's One Note Job
For several months I have been pondering how to feel about the status of people with disabilities in Britain today.  I just couldn’t quite find a starting point or a structure that felt honest an sincere. Then Rishi Sunak introduced his plans to tackle ‘sick note culture‘. I took 24hrs to steam and then I wrote to my MP, which says everything I had been wanting to say. So here it is: What you…

The cost of caring. Is Britain failing its carers?
Tumblr media
Who are Britain's army of carers? The 2021 Census estimated the number of unpaid carers in England and Wales at 5 million but Carers UK research estimates the number could be as high as 10 million people.
But the obstacles Britain's unpaid carers face, has been making the headlines after it came to light the Department for Work and Pensions have been penalizing them for working while claiming Carers Allowance.

On the Curae Prize
For the writer-carer. A new, more vigorous approach and a new literary prize ‘I feel so much better. I feel seen.’ Many people who read this piece will be carers. If readers are not one now, they may be later and some of us will always be in this role. A carer (I use the NHS definition) is anyone who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness,…

Trying to cancel my carers. Company has made my life so much more difficult. Had covid for over a week, told them I need cancel until well. Today carer turned up, I've been added back onto the list. At 7am. My calls were always 10. Told them I was still unwell. Text company to cancel with them. Apparently I'm not allowed? Can only cancel for week at time cause they need tell social services? Not my problem. Tell them I'm cancelling. I don't want your "help". Causes me so much extra work. Cannot deal.
