Atlas Air, Inc. is a major American cargo airline, passenger charter airline, and aircraft lessor based in Purchase, New York. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings. In 1992, Atlas Air began operations when the airline's founder, Michael Chowdry, started leasing aircraft to airlines. In 1997, Atlas placed an order for 10 new Boeing 747-400F and now Atlas Air is the world's largest operator of the Boeing 747 aircraft. The airline was named after Atlas, a Titan in Greek mythology, who carried the heavens on his shoulders. Their symbol on the plane's tail is a golden man carrying a golden world.
