Carl Perkins describing the first time he played “My Old Friend” for Paul is truly touching, but I’m sorry the fact that part way through Carl goes into detail about how handsome Paul looks and how pretty his cheeks are will always be funny to me.

What is some Beatles lore that shook you to the core when you first heard about it ?
When I got this ask I literally went "ooooh" out loud. Great question nonny!
The first thing that came to mind was the Paris trip. It's just so intimate and soft. What did their friends think? What did John say to Cyn? Did Paul show John his doodles? Did John smile shyly, or punch Paul's upper arm and call him a girl?
Tumblr media
It's such a staple of the fandom that I think we forget how wild it is.
---
Next thought: George and Mo. She says it was a spiritual connection, George told Pattie he wanted/deserved a harem, John (possibly) called it "ritual incest". It's not the thing the broke Mo and Ritchie up, nor did it come between George and Ritchie.
---
Finally for this round: Carl Perkins, and Paul's connection to "the spirit world". Carl Perkins was an idol of theirs, so much that George used 'Carl' as part of his stage name on the pre-Beatles Scottish tour. So it's kind of mad that Paul ended up inviting him to Montserrat (where the recording of Tug of War was a sort of Irish-wake for John). Was Paul hoping Carl's presence might entice George Harrison to come? Anyway, I can't tell this story as well as Carl can:

George and Olivia (attending David Gilmour’s birthday party in London March 23, 1996); photo by Richard Young/REX/Shutterstock.
On September 2, 1978, George and Olivia were married.
“‘You came and helped me through/When I’d let go/You came from out the blue/Never have known what I’d done without you.’ That sums it up.” - George Harrison, Rolling Stone, April 19, 1979
“[Olivia] supported him in all his business endeavors, looked after him during his illness, stood by his side whenever he needed her, and also gave him the freedom he so desperately required. And all inconspicuously in the background, without pushing into the spotlight.” - Klaus Voormann, translated from Warum spielst du Imagine nicht auf dem weißen Klavier, John? (2003)
“I told Olivia, ‘Oh, God, girl, you’ve meant so much to his life, you’ve just totaled him out, and it’s just wonderful.’ They’re beautiful people.” - Carl Perkins, Goldmine, 1998
“I got an e-mail from Liv the other day saying she thought George performing ‘The Pirate Song’ on Rutland Weekend Television was the bravest thing he ever did and that she wanted to be a pirate, too. Well, his dark sweet lady was the love of his life, and I know how much he loved her; a braver, finer, lovelier companion no man could ever find.” - Eric Idle, The Greedy Bastard Diary
“[Olivia] is a beautiful person. His son, Dhani, is a beautiful kid, man. […] Olivia had the hardest job in the world, because she loved George more than all of us, and she really took care of him and cleared the path in front of him, behind him, and inherited that crazy life, you know.” - Tom Petty, Rolling Stone, January 17, 2002
“Olivia says that, towards the end, when he [George] knew he was dying, her husband would comfort her by saying: ‘Olivia, you’ll be fine, you’ll be fine.’ And is she?
‘Fine is OK, but it is not really good enough, is it? But George was right, I am fine and I am OK, although I will miss him until my dying day. But he walked his road and now I have to walk mine.’” - The Telegraph, January 24, 2005 (x)

December 4, 1956
Elvis, with Vegas Showgirl Marilyn Evans, showed up at Sun Records where Carl Perkins and his band with Jerry Lee Lewis hired for the session was recording. Elvis’ drop by turned the session into The Legendary Jam Session. Sam Phillips called the press, leveraged the unexpected visit for publicity and called Johnny Cash, newly signed to the label for the photographs.
The Perkins session that became known as The Million Dollar Quartet was recorded by Phillips. knowing it could never be released – already sold to RCA Presley was a national and breaking international star – while Perkins and Cash were on his label.
Jerry Lee Lewis was still trying to convince Phillips, and was there as a session musician.
Phillips recorded the mostly gospel, with Chuck Berry songs, and Elvis doing impersonations of Country Singers Bill Monroe and Hank Snow as well as impersonating Jackie Wilson who sang lead for Billy Ward and His Dominos, whom Elvis had just seen perform in Vegas.
A copy of the tape was made for Elvis and it was located in the 1980s in his Graceland bedroom closet, along with a recording of the 1956 Tupelo Homecoming show and an interview with Elvis and both of his parents.
Most of the infamous jam is gospel music, which was changed for the Broadway Play. Also, Elvis plays piano for most of the recordings and while Johnny Cash is in the photos, he’s not evident on any of the tape. Elvis’ Vegas Showgirl Date – Marilyn Evans is – she quips about “This Rover Boy Trio”
The four ended up taping some songs together, but recordings from the impromptu session would not be pressed on to discs for another 25 years when they were released as “The Million Dollar Quartet”. Elvis Presley had a copy of the session tapes which RCA used, while the Sun Studio was later sold and their original tapes were used by the new owner. Who also had Jimmy Ellis sing “Elvis on Jerry Lee Lewis recordings.

I’m pretty sure I’be asked this before but…do you think that the Carl Perkins story is true, about Linda telling him what John’s last words to Paul were? I mean, I see no reason for him to lie but it just always has bothered me why Paul has NEVER mentioned it, but at the same time has also never flat out said it wasn’t true. Your thoughts? Thanks.
Hello there! In a nutshell, YES I believe Carl's story happened as Carl tells it. The fact that Paul never mentions it doesn't cause me any cognitive dissonance, as I am sure there are countless details about his relationship with John he keeps private. WAY MORE than we do or ever will know. I also think John and Paul both believed they had a psychic/cosmic/spiritual connection, and so this is just one of many things that would reinforce that belief to Paul. Furthermore, I think Paul is protective (and superstitious) enough to actively NOT want to share these intimate things with the public. Why would he want to expose himself/them to public ridicule? Recording and releasing the song says more than enough, IMO. If people do the legwork on Now and Then and connect all the dots, great! If not, Paul loses nothing.
Thank you for your ask!

It adds another layer to “Now and Then” that is eerie and beautiful. And, in my opinion, it’s “very John” to somehow get a message to Paul through the man who wrote “Blue Suede Shoes.” ❤️

HAPPY HEAVENLY BIRTHDAY to Elvis Presley. When he turned 11, his mother Gladys took him to the Tupelo Hardware Company Store and bought him his first guitar: A 1947 Kay flat-top K19. He’d play this guitar throughout his school years and at his first Sun recording session. Also on this day: In 1956 his double-A single “Don’t Be Cruel/Hound Dog” went to #1 and stayed there for weeks. Fast forward to 1993 and the United States Post Office issued an Elvis Presley stamp.
Sidebar: 1n 1976 David Bowie demo’d the song “Golden Years” with Elvis in mind to cover it (for unclear reasons Elvis nixed it even after making a demo). Rewind to 1960 when Elvis recorded the song “Black Star” (later re-titled “Flaming Star”). That song directly inspired the Black Star theme of Bowie’s final work, and it’s remarkable that Bowie was also born on the same day as Elvis.
In 2022 Baz Luhrmann released the ELVIS film, a biopic that most people think “got it right,” portraying Elvis as channeling Pentacostal church rapture with juke joint energy into one voice, one vibration. He looms over me, be it through mindful study or cultural resonance—in 1989 I named my back-up The Rover Boys after the surname for The Million Dollar Quartet a.k.a Elvis’s legendary 1956 jam session with Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins. Like many professional musicians, I started with cover bands playing in bars, and I’m certain I’ve learned many Elvis hits + in my solo set I do gospel songs that he favored.
Elvis’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love” is based on “Plaisir d’Amour,” a 1784 French chanson by Jean-Paul-Égide Martini, re-written by hit-making team Hugo & Luigi w/George David Weiss. The lyrics are informed by poet Alexander Pope and Bible verses. I always enjoyed the tune, but when I heard Bob Dylan cover it, I became inspired to play it. Dylan gave it a gospel flair, and that triangulation with God’s love is what I aim for when I do it. Here’s my cover of it with stories https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEeb6uPiQWI&t=217s Meanwhile, HB EP
