Ann Takamaki's first awakening was great and really set up her character to be a vengeful mirror to Akechi (something something appearances and revenge and palatability something) ... Only to not commit to that at all.

And one of the more disappointing things to find out is that it definitely started at the Personas.

Carmen is a Romani woman who works at a factory living her life and flirting with danger on a whim. Yes, it's a tragedy and lots of other things but for the sake of relating it to Ann's character—Carmen is a tale of wants, the untamable nature of love and the alluring rebellion of rejecting your past (José's contribution to this) and the dangers of not following that path with your head on straight.

Fiery passion can and will burn the one holding the match if they're not mindful of it.

Now.

The redesign is meant to bridge that gap between Self and Ideal (Man and Rebellious Legend)—the blonde hair and shared mask. And while I eventually opted for a more modern/sexy kimono, Ann's got family from Columbia and the flower earring that Carmen wears is the Romanian flower (if I'm wrong, send me pictures and I'll change it).

I wanted to explore what Carmen would probably symbolize for Ann and also acknowledge that feeling of being young and reckless and still really wishing you had an older cooler mentor mom. (Not that Ann's super cool business mom doesn't count but Ann and her father were always more of the artiste of the family)

This was my first attempt and honestly that bright blue catlike eye kinda fucks—

Honestly, this was a really cool scene from Ann's confidant line in Persona 5 Royal. Learning that she heavily identifies with & wants to emulate the femme fatale supervillainesses who expressed confidence in their body & image from anime she watched growing up is truly reflective of Ann's overall character arc of embracing her sexuality on her own terms and no one else's (especially after the Kamoshida incident).

This is why Ann's initial Persona is Carmen, one of the most famous literary figures of the femme fatale archetype. As the Phantom Thieves member "Panther," Ann is at home with her body & image, utilizing the power of her Persona to prevent other people from suffering the same kind of sexual harassment and abuses of power that she once did at the start of the game.

I love how my own anxiety renders my update schedule into nothing: silence for months or everything at once but spaced apart with the posting-later option. Eh, whatever.
