#carpenter bee

Today I met a very sweet bee (who I believe was a carpenter bee) whose wings were looking rather tattered and beat up. I offered her a dandelion and she very quickly became L O S T in the sauce. I offered her some water in a bottle cap but there was No Time to Drink when there was Dandelion Pollen™️ to be had! I took her and the bottle cap and put them in the clover blossoms by my front porch where I left her very happy. Which of course made me happy!
I wish tumblr let you upload more than one video because I have some very adorable videos of her and her amusing sauce antics as I call them. If you wanted to see them I could reblog this 2-3 times with the vids. :)
Yes, I would love to see them! Just tag me in the reblogs or I may not see them. :)

I think the coolest thing I’ve seen so far this year with my work has been a gynandromorph bee! From what I have looked at so far, this carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica) has male features on the right side of the head and female features on the left!
I am working through learning more about bee identification so I can take a more thorough look at this bee!

Meet my Hollow Knight sona, a cute, fluffy carpenter bee! 🐝
She's a wandering artist, in search of inspiration and a little adventure. Much like most folk who end up in Dirtmouth, she heard tell of the Kingdom of Hallownest and set out to explore and see its wonders for herself. it's in the depths of the lost kingdom where she meets a certain little knight...
I also made a mock-up screencap because why not! It was p fun trying to imitate the game’s art style haha

Have you ever come across Blue Carpenter Bees (Xylocopa caerulea)? I’ve just seen a post about them on Facebook and they’re so adorable and such a pretty colour!!
I’ve never seen one in person since they’re not native to where I live. But here’s one for everyone to admire:

Slender-scaped carpenter bee, Xylocopa tenuiscapa, Apidae. Found in South and Southeast Asia.
The common name "carpenter bee" derives from their nesting behavior; nearly all species burrow into hard plant material such as dead wood or bamboo. The bees do not eat the wood, but discard it or use it to build partitions between nest cells where eggs are laid. Burrows are filled with masses of pollen on which the larvae will feed.
Although most carpenter bees are solitary, some species form simple social nests where mothers and daughters cohabit and divide up labor responsibilities.

Xylocopa mordax
A common Carpenter Bee in the Dominican Republic, from one of our expeditions.  Note the wing colors.  In addition to being plain awesome (who wouldn't want wing colors like that?) they are often species specific, helping to identify the Carpenters of the world.

Perching Male Carpenter Bee (Xylocopa sp., Xylocopinae, Apidae) Perching is a mate seeking behaviour observed in several species of Carpenter Bees, usually in a prominent position and often used repeatedly if disturbed or drawn away to investigate a potential mate. Perching behaviour is differentiated from resting behaviors by the wing position - held at right angles to the body for the former and flat against the body when at rest. by Sinobug (itchydogimages) on Flickr. Hi! I believe this is a carpenter bee? Tho I might be wrong. (It was on the side walk so I put it to safety somewhere it wouldn't be stepped on). Photo was taken in the suburbs of Paris.
Yes, a carpenter bee! Most likely a violet carpenter bee. She is.....large. I love her.

The Good Carpenter Bee.
This is the other species of carpenter bee that occurs in the Eastern U.S.  Xylocopa micans.  For some reason it thumbs its labrum at dry wood in buildings, decks, and fences (unlike its cousin X. virginica).
Because it retires to natural habitats its nesting preferences are little known and yet another place where contributions by sharp-eyed naturalistas can be made. This male was photographed by Anders Croft.  Bee collected by Mimi Jenkins in Watermelon fields of South Carolina
