The 1966-76 Jensen Interceptor became the most iconic car to ever bear the #Jensen name, but the Jensen Brothers - Alan and Richard - weren’t much involved with the car that made their name internationally famous. The Jensens always had periodic cash crunches and in 1959 a UK investment firm, Norcross, took a controlling stake - from then on they had a board of directors to deal with. In 1965 Jensen was planning to update the aging circa-1962 CV-8 (designed by long-time style chief Eric Neale) with Furgeson Formula (FF) 4WD *and* launch a smaller, volume-selling companion car, the stillborn P66 #Interceptor. The P66 prototype debuted to criticism from the press about its dated exterior, and internal criticism from managing director Brian Owen and Chief Engineer Kevin Beattie. Owen and Beattie thought Jensen’s limited resources should be spent on a new car integrating the FF idea, and the press also felt the CV-8 was past it’s prime. After a boardroom fight, the Jensen Brothers and Neale resigned and Owen and Beattie turned to #CarrozzeriaTouring to style up their new steel-bodied car, a big upgrade from Jensen’s fiberglass bodied cars of the previous years. Touring couldn’t finish it, however, and #Vignale ended up getting the car ready for production - though the first examples had such poor fit that the jigs had to be reworked after the tooling was shipped to Bromwich. The Interceptor and the 4WD #JensenFF put the company on the international map - with cachet to match a DB5 and with Mopar V8s providing enormous power. Early interceptors used the Chrysler 383, replaced in 1971 by the 440 (the Interceptor SP used the 440 "Six Pack") The fastback #JensenInterceptor was a coup for Jensen, who continued to hit periodic crises and overexpanded with Jensen-Healey. The Opec crisis hit Jensen very hard, as did the mounting problems with the J-H, and by the time the Interceptor Convertible arrived in 1974, things were dire. About 500 convertibles (not 276 as sometimes reported) were made in the two years Jensen had left - receivership came in September of 1975 and the end in May of ’76. Monterey, CA - the #giulia #sprintspeciale from #alfaromeo . Made from 1959 to 1966, it was designed by the mercurial Franco Scaglione for coachbuilder Bertone, and offers eccentric flair. If the #SS bears more than a slight resemblance to the outrageous #Alfa Romeo B.A.T 5, 7 and 9 concept cars, it’s because their #designer was also #Scaglione, who was employed by #Bertone at the time. By 1963, he’d created designs like the Lamborghini 350 GTV, the first car (a unique prototype) to wear the badge of the bull.
