Happy Halloween season! Here's another stab at my own take of Carrie White, based on her book description. I'm super happy with how these turned out! I'd love to tackle some of the other characters in the book eventually, especially Margaret!
EDIT:
Now available as an art print here!

actually I do want to talk about Sally Jackson a tad more because one criticism I've been hearing about her book counterpart more recently is "book Sally is one-dimensional: the perfect mother with no flaws" and that just has me biting my cheek because one part of her book counterpart that I always thought was ripe with discussion and didn't make it to the show is that Sally states that it was selfish of her to keep Percy close. It's one of the last things she says to him before she's "killed" by the minotaur.
And there's so much that we don't know about Sally because we view her from Percy's eyes. From his perspective we know that she's exceedingly kind, she never raises her voice to him or even Gabe, and she endured a horrible and abusive relationship to protect her son from monsters (of a different kind).
But there are things we can piece together from the text: Sally has known about CHB for a long time, apparently since before Percy was even born because Poseidon told her he wanted to send Percy there; she was told that it was a mistake for her to keep Percy close - who told her that, we're not sure, she only uses the phrase they; she's been in contact with Grover through out the school year; she knows that she can't cross the camp boundary line, which means either Grover or someone else (Chiron? Poseidon?) told her that, and that she understood that there was place that Percy would be safe from monsters.
And all of these little details are so interesting because it does make you wonder just how much she did or didn't know. Was her self assessment right? Was it selfish of her to keep Percy close?
On one hand, she kept him close because she loved him, alongside the fear that if she sent him to camp, she would be saying goodbye for good -- so is it even fair to call the act of keeping him close selfish? Or perhaps, much like Chiron, she assumed keeping Percy in the dark would be safer?
But on the other hand, Percy had been attracting monsters all his childhood, she understood camp was a safe place from monsters, and she had apparently been told explicitly that it was a mistake for her to keep him close.
And then adding in the factors of: Percy is her only family in the entire world, she's been suffering with Gabe for years, sacrificing so much in order to keep Percy safe when he's at home... but even that has a touch of sad irony because when we meet Percy in tlt, its at point when he's not really home at all -- he's been regularly sent off to boarding schools, so much so that he's internalized it as his own short-coming.
And all of this isn't to say "Omg Sally is actually horrible" or to assert definitely that she is selfish... but more to speak to the fact that in the books, she's not an all-perfect 2-dimensional mother. And her self-assessment of selfishness is something that is really interesting to explore and debate given the implications of what she apparently did (or did not) know about the godly world. I feel there's even an argument to be made that Sally being "selfish" could be a reflection of Percy's fatal flaw.

Alright let's imagine a scene that is all too normal in palestine. A palestinian business owner finds his building covered in graffiti stars of Davids and Hebrew that says "gas the arabs" and "death to arabs"
Now imagine there's a reporter there and asks the palestinian business owner what happens and they say "the jews attacked my business"
Pause. Now your response might be "uncle no. Say israelis not jews" and then this is when he would look at you like youre stupid because the israelis doing this are jewish. They are not the Christians or the druze or the palestinian ones with Israeli citizenship. They are Jewish israelis who believe in their religious supremacy. When you graffiti stars of david all over a palestinian business, car, or the street you seek that conflation. it sends a message, this is jewish land and you're next.
The problem is that these videos circulate in zionist circles. "Watch this video of children in gaza calling for the death of jews" "watch how they say they want to fight and kill jews" those children are referring to Israeli soldiers that come in night and do their raids with the star of David attached to their uniform or the ones that bomb them. It's easy to watch those videos and assume that palestinians are indoctrinating their children on anti semitism or you can realize that those children's only interaction with jewish ppl is through violence and parents cannot protect their children from this. Doesn't matter context is lost
Abby Martin went to Jerusalem and interviewed israelis for 2 hours and she says every israeli was extremely confident to say that this land is for them and that they should push the Arabs out and when she interviewed palestinians they spoke of freedom from occupation and their dreams. That's reality. Not the soundbites.
And yet we have invasive youtubers and interviewers constantly in the street of ramallah or wherever in palestine asking palestinians "do you hate jews?" And in those videos you hear those palestinians say "no we have no problem with jews we have a problem with occupation and we have a problem with zionism." Bc this is how we are trained to respond to this trope. Palestinians are very aware what the world thinks of us and the reality is that many palestinians have internalized it and we grow up reading books on the Holocaust and train ourselves to recognize anti semitic dog whistles so zionists don't get the soundbites they want.
So we say "anti zionism is not anti semitism" and we say "israeli zionists" and we do not say "jewish supremacy" even thought it exists in palestine but "zionist supremacy" and in these carefully worded speech we water down what is happening to us in an effort to not deter people away from solidarity. But it means nothing. The world categorically blames palestinians for rising anti semitism they blame us for jewish insecurity globally.

if max didn't fall
Since he loved the “party” they threw for him, he shares his beer with everyone (grace of course does not participate)
He finds out that shockingly enough, ruth and him are equally as obsessed with sex when they both scoff and say “watch some porn!!!!”
Pete and steph can’t help glancing at each other as they sip on beer (pete is getting very quickly drunk because he has never had beer even though ted offers him some of his jack at home)
As he gets tipsy he uses stephanie to help him get up, giggling nervously when he brushes her hair off her shoulder showing her neck
Ritchie explains how attack on titan is actually super cool, it has tons of blood and guts and fighting, and that it’s not lame let me you show you a clip
Max smacks his shoulder and calls it “nerd shit” but *does* remember the name, where he will look it up and watch the whole first season in a weekend.
When they get back to school the next day, not much changes for the whole school. Kyle still can’t date brenda, nerds still (overall) are poorly treated.
But it gets better
They can go to the football games (if they don’t cheer for him enough, they may change though)
Theyre allowed to be in the same hallway
He’ll smack them on the shoulders and he does slap peter on the ass but not even close to the level as before
They win the big game (fuck clivesdale!!! Fuck em straight to hell!!)
Max gives ritchie a chest bump and after this he can join the huddle SOMETIMES
Steph and peter celebrate a bit more than they intended (watching it sarcastically right) and may or may not hug and get very flustered when the winning play is made.
Maybe they go study at pasquales for real next time and max shouts “I DID NOT CONSENT TO THIS RENDEZVOUS!!” every time he sees them together.

So the reason why Malleus doesn't have any other blood relatives is because dragon fae literally cannot be conceived without love. It's implied that Malleus' grandpa's long been dead so Maleficia is unable to bear any more children, and Malenoa died before Malleus was even hatched.
So that's why they insisted that Malleus be absolutely absent in the whole Phantom Bride debacle. He's not allowed to be "married" to just anyone-- not for jokes and not even for political reasons. It's the kingdom's priority to continue this family's draconic bloodline no matter what, given that they're practically Briar Valley's gods and their citizens are highly dependent on their identity as dragon fae. They can't do that if Malleus doesn't naturally fall in love.
