Hello strangers! It's been a long time since I last did a progress post of any kind - thank you everyone who's continued to tag me so I don't get left behind! And thanks to @noblecorgi, @alexalexinii, @you-remind-me-of-the-babe, @blackberrysummerblog, @thewholelemon, @mooncello, @monbons, @prettygoododds, @shrekgogurt, and @youarenevertooold for tagging me, today. (I feel so loved! <3) I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone's up to.
It's still Sunday in my neck of the woods, though just barely. And yes, I've used my "sentences" banner, but... It's a bit more chaotic than that. Honestly, I wasn't sure about doing a post today because I'm a bit all over the place, but then I figured... eh, why not? I am all over the place LOL.
So here's your snippet from the collective efforts of Jo's creativity, lately, under the cut. (Because I ramble...)
On the Haunting of Simon Snow... I haven't forgotten about it! Nor is it abandoned. As I keep telling anyone who will listen, I have a rough draft, which basically amounts to an outline, meaning I have way too much figured out to just let the story fade away. XD I attempted to work on Chapter 2 earlier this month, and ran into some roadblocks - of the architectural variety.
So I've started to research manor houses and English estates like mad. I'm going to do the thing. I'm going to figure out Pitch Manor. Why? Because my brain won't let me gloss over paltry details such as the location of Simon in the grand scheme of the house, or how and where the roof attaches and where that tree is going to be. It's annoying, but I figure... This is a fun puzzle, too. One I hope to be able to share with the fandom at large once it's complete.
This little snippet is from an early design I've since scrapped (but you never know what might come around, again.)
"That's great, Jo, but how about some sentences?"
Okay. Ahem. Here's... some Simon sentences... that have just been scribbled out. *cough*
I sit there and listen to the man on the other side as he blathers on about extra fees associated with estate deliveries due to distance and blah blah bloody fucking blah. I wish he’d just say it. Just say 'this is the Pitch Manor tax.' No one ever does. But everyone charges it.
I HAVE WRITTEN SEE THERE'S PROOF.
Okay, moving on...
The other thing I'm working on is illustrations for @mooncello's beautiful fanfic, "Lost Boys." I just posted art from Chapter 1 here, and I'm working on art for Chapter 2, now. The story is stuffed to the gills with absolutely gorgeous imagery, so choosing what to illustrate is a challenge. Hopefully it all works out, and in the meantime, here are a couple doodles.
(I was telling Heath last night... this morning...? about how all illustrations start out as baby sketches XD These are the little babes in the creative nursery, basically. Also I have never posted baby sketches before and I'm kinda nervous about it. But. Well. >.> )
THERE YOU HAVE IT. A couple of my reasons for being so entirely absent from all other aspects of the fandom. (Also I got hit with the flu super hard, but doing better now!)

Did anyone else have the experience of reading Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell at the ripe age of 13 and relating to Cath because you read fanfic and had crippling social anxiety, and THEN eventually growing up to be a young adult who wrote fanfic and had crippling social anxiety, in your first year of uni and trying to finish your biggest fic yet by a specific self-imposed deadline at the expense of your finals assessments? Because boy do I have I story for yo—
I didn’t write fic when I read Fangirl for the first time—I didn’t write fic until the summer before my first year of uni, funnily enough—but seeing a character that used fictional worlds/relationships to escape the real one, who struggled in the same ways as me and didn’t so much as change by the end but grow and evolve was really special to me.
Rainbow gave me a little too much credit, maybe… I did not, unfortunately, get a Levi or a Reagan, nor do I have a spunky twin sister to reconnect with. It’s just me and my writing, my blorbos and my fandom friends—even now that I’m going through another fic deadline rush worryingly close finals in my second year, AGAIN—but I can’t help but think about how serendipitous it is that my life ended up mirroring a lot about a character that spoke to me so much as a tween.
I reread Fangirl every now and again and always, I think: oh, I feel like that. She gets it… which is maybe a little bit sad when it’s because you’re hiding in a bathroom for an hour because you’re too scared to go to the canteen, or crying because you’ve lived the whole first quarter of your life and you still don’t know how to talk to people, but even those times, being alone didn’t feel as… alone, I think, because of Fangirl.
I think about Cath when I’m on hour 6 of writing and I’m hunched over my laptop in the dark. I think about her when I put up fandom posters on my dorm room walls, or reply to fic comments, or straight up start crying because, besides fandom, I’m really lonely. (I think about her when I’m not so lonely too—when I talk to people and it goes ok, and maybe I can be person, actually).
I think about Cath when I’m scared. I think about her when I’m terrified and I just have to keep going anyway.
All that’s to say, I’m really grateful that Rainbow Rowell read so much drarry fanfiction wrote Fangirl, and I’m really grateful it was displayed at the front table of the bookstore I was in. I’m really grateful I read it, and related to it, and that I still do.
love is about sacrifices and those sacrifices are 1 wearing sunglasses on a cloudy day so your sun-sensitive boyfriend looks more normal and 2 wearing a sweater vest even though it's too hot for september because you're boyfriend needs to conceal his wings with pullovers
I’m here to review all of the covers of Carry On I could find. This is divided into three categories of a) English covers I see in stores so I presume are American but I also accidentally somehow have the Australian editions of Mortal Instruments so who fucking knows. b) other English editions that I’m assuming are UK/Canadian/other English speaking countries editions but don’t really know. And b) international translated covers. Now:
1. American Paperback
2/10. There is nO drip or pizzazz here. The minimalist covers in the UK have more drip and pizzazz than this mf.
2. American Bookshelf (Print-On Hardcover/School Library)
8/10. I didn’t like this one at first but it is the version I own so it’s grown on me. I annotated this motherfucker. It’s got SO much drip and pizzazz. I love this version.
3. American Hardback
4/10. I think it’s. Fine. I don’t particularly care for it, I think against the other two covers of the trilogy this one doesn’t match at all and the paperback/Bookshelf edition match better. I would like it more if we had editions of the the rest of the trilogy that matched this.
4. UK Edition
5/10 this starts what I call the ‘royal starcrossed lovers’ section of the cover editions. I believe this is the UK version? I’ve never seen it in the US, at least. Baz and Simon look like forbidden romance princes. I love it. It looks like a sweet tarts box. I simply cant rank it higher than a five but the rest ARE better.
5. Italian Edition <<3
9/10 this looks like. T4T royal gay forbidden romance. I KNOW its supposed to be Baz, Simon, Penny, and Agatha but its so much better to think they’re trans.
6. Italian Edition part II
7/10. This is soooo. Eating it up. They way they arent looking at each other… the DEER the MASSIVE watford silouette. Thank you Italy cover designed
7. Portugese edition
7/10 the colour scheme of this is PERFECION. im literally gonna eat this one its SOOOOOOOO perfect you guys I meant it. I love this cover.
8. Hebrew Edition
3/10. I have no qualms with the Hebrew cover it just feels so.. uncanny valley. Why are they switched. baz go back to the Simon’s right you’re his right hand man. His little hip jut out it so gay. What is this
9. German edition
1/10 this is sooo 😭😭💀 it looks like a parody novel. What is this. This look like a 1990’s parody of Harry Potter. Its so. What.
10. Russian Edition
10/10. No notes. Funniest covers EVER. My mate said this looks like Disney Magic Fairies and they were RIGHT. its so cartoonish. It looks like. Like a childrens novel AND IT HAS THE 18+ IN THE CORNER. the 18+ in the corner makes this ten times better its so FUNNY. it makes it so GOOFY. this cover understood the assignment. This book is silly and goofy.
