LA PEDRERA-CASA MILA, BARCELONA, SPAIN (October 10, 2017)
No one was probably as excited as I was while we waited in line to enter. After all, Gaudi was the main reason for our side trip to Barcelona, and La Pedrera was just 2 of 3 residential buildings that the architect had ever designed. The opportunity was there, and I just had to visit.
Ridiculed in its time for its style, La Pedrera was once compared to a garage for zeppelins. But today, it is easy to see why the structure is regarded as a modernist masterpiece; in fact in 1984, it rightfully found its place in the World Heritage List.
La Pedrera’s nickname, which means stone quarry, refers to the fact that stone was used as a key material for the design of its façade and balconies. But truly, Casa Milà is best known for its iconic terraces which carry the building’s wonderfully sculptured chimneys and air vents. Full of decorative and functional curves, the design allows for better distribution of light through the structure’s two enormous inner courtyard. I don’t know how many photos I took.
