With 36 projected individual residences and numerous well-known architects involved the Case Study Houses program, initiated by John Entenza and his magazine „Arts & Architecture“, was the most comprehensive idea contest for affordable postwar (single-family) houses. Running from 1945 through 1966 the likes of Richard Neutra, Raphael Soriano, Charles & Ray Eames, Eero Saarinen, Pierre Koenig and Craig Ellwood developed what they regarded as contemporary, inexpensive and efficient modern homes for the American suburban family, aspirations that in many cases didn’t quite work out as construction costs way exceeded the average American family’s budget. Instead the Case Study Houses today epitomize the California Modern by virtue of their lightweight look and feel, their blending of inside and outside living as well as their careful presentation in predominantly Julius Shulman’s photographs.
But today only those projects associated with big names and/or staged in iconic photographs are vividly present among mid-century aficionados which is a shame in view of the other quality entries to the program: architects like Rodney Walker, J.R. Davidson or Kemper Nomland added their own note to the Case Studies and deserve being recognized.
In order to explore the program in its entirety Elizabeth A.T. Smith’s monumental book „Case Study Houses - The Complete CSH Program 1945-1966“, first published in 2002 by @taschen, which still represents the most comprehensive account of the program’s history. Each building, built and unbuilt, is presented in a comprehensive dossier containing an explanatory text, photos and plans. Beyond the houses Smith also addresses the genesis of the program as well as its development over the duration two decades, a development that wasn’t short of bickering. But what ultimately remains of John Entenza’s ambitious program is a number of truly iconic designs that made architectural history and remain revered until this very day.

The destruction of culture is an evident part of genocide. Al-Omari housed centuries old Palestinian manuscripts that convey aspects of the intellectual history of Palestinians. I am not sure of their status. Both literal and metaphorical life is being extinguished by Israel.

[Image Description: a panel from the Case Study of Vanitas manga. The Marquis Machina, in her Lady Archiviste form, looks up in surprise just as she's finished building a large house of cards. End Description].
I do think it's very funny and on the nose that Machina is building a house of cards when Teacher drops the line about dhams trafficking drugs.
Machina has carefully created a situation where she has a network of dhampirs bringing her information in exchange for granting them a degree of societal protection. I'm guessing neither the church, the racist vampire aristocracy, nor the dhampirs kept subservient to her are particularly thrilled about this arrangement.
Surely the literal house of cards she's just finished building when we first hear about a chaotic unknown element in her delicate dhampir system doesn't mean anything.

being disabled and reading house md fic is just randomly getting misty eyed at someone putting your experience into words and getting punched in the gut with confronting your own pain and the ways in which you ignore it and the ways in which you internalize it and the ways in which you minimize it and the ways in which you're debilitated by it and it's all bookended by the most sarcastic little asshole committing medical malpractice

Hello my friend!! My stinky cheese!
Do you think Raphael would bond at all with a Tav who also hates their father (cough cough kinda like Durge cough cough)?
If so, could I request a prompt where Raph reacts to Tav (female) just getting really angry/upset about that familial void that he can so relate to.
I know this isn't gonna be easy, but I wish you luck wrangling the beast 🫡
A/N: I opted for mother vs. father. Since you vetoed me from using Durge, it’s a Tav. A Lolth-Sworn Drow. This….is not quite the prompt. I’m sorry, love.
______________
In nearly two thousand years of living, Raphael has welcomed all sorts of souls to his door. Spurned lovers, vengeful rulers, petulant children; he is all things to all people, as any devil worth their salt could attest. And for all those souls and all those years, he can say he has felt true camaraderie only a handful of times.
He counts the drow among them.
Tav regards him with interest from the start. No fear, only a culturally conditioned lust. He is power and ambition made flesh; he is a steppingstone and tool, or so she imagines. Bless her little heart. She will use him and expects to be used in turn; it is a charmingly simplistic exchange.
Tit for tat, love. Information for the Orthon. A hammer for a crown. He comes to her in the aftermath of the invasion, surprised to find her languishing in the Elfsong. She has talked of naught but her return to the Underdark.
“You linger, little mouse. Have we grown fond of the surface-dwellers?”
She smiles, teeth too white in the elegant darkness of her face. A curtain of platinum hair falls over her shoulder. Tav is a stunning representation of the breed. She steps aside to grant him entry to her suite. “Don’t be foolish. My delay is purely practical.” Tav settles in one of the rich wingbacks, looking for all the world a queen. “I wanted to make certain you’d find me.”
“Oh, always, sweetling. Wherever you go, rest assured I will find you.” He plucks her hand from the armrest, kissing the back of her knuckles. “That lovely little soul of yours bears my mark.”
“Lolth will not be pleased.”
“The Spider Bitch was long since defanged. Her dissatisfaction means nothing to me. ” Tav’s expression softens. Her eyes remain the rest of those sworn to the mistress of the Demonweb pits, but her loyalties have shifted. “But your satisfaction, my little treat, means everything. Tell us what you need.”
“I’ve been absent from Menzoberranzan too long. Before the,” she hesitates a moment, “incident. I had intended to wrest my House from the Matron Mother’s control.”
“Matricide, is it? How delightful.”
“You know how parents can be.”
“Don’t I just.” Raphael chuckles. He seats himself beside her. The proximity of the chairs and his size leaves his knee fetching up against hers. Tav shifts, hooking her foot behind his ankle. Brave girl. “And you are lucky, pet. I have a soft spot for rebellious princes and princesses.”
She rests her chin in the palm of her hand. Lovely and so willing to treat with him. He’s struck again by how odd it is to see yourself reflected in a mortal vessel. There are scars across the pretty things back, left by lash and more inventive forms of torture typical to the species. And he sees the same hate in her eyes. A burning desire for more, to take what she's owed. “Let us discuss terms, love of mine.” The endearment makes him laugh; there is no love, not even an echo of it, in her voice. Only hunger. “Passage to Menzoberranzan.”
“Only passage? I might offer you power. And more.”
“And more?” She arches a brow, stroking his calf with her foot. “And the cost?”
“Negotiable, pet. We might even defer it…a Matron Mother will not lack resources. Power today for payment tomorrow. A generous offer, no?”
Tav chews at her lower lip. “And if I proposed an alliance? To swear myself to you for this power, to pledge my House to your service…what would you offer?” And it is odd, so odd, to feel a pang of lust after so many centuries. “I would see my mother consumed by her damned spiders. After that…” she shrugs. “I’ll admit to having a fondness for rebel princes, myself.”
“How convenient.”
And she enjoys his words from so many months prior. “Isn’t it just?”

The Entenza House, also known as Case Study House #9, was designed by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen and completed in 1950. Located in Los Angeles, the home's living area features a wall of windows, an Eames "surfboard" table and molded plywood lounge chair. The room's flowing space is anchored by a fireplace open on two sides. (Photo: Julius Shulman 1952)

i hate it when asoiaf fans try to deny the racism against dornish people in canon.
“race is a social construct!” YES! “race doesn’t exist in the asoiaf world like it does in reality…” uhhh say that to alleras when leo tyrell described his mom as “a monkey from the summer isles.” how people stereotype dornishmen as small and dark with beady eyes. how tyrion complained of how dornish smelled. it’s been established canonically how most westerosi characters viewed non-white people and foreigners.
sure, some of dornish are white and white-passing, but that doesn’t erase the fact that they are mostly brown and black people??? just like how africa, middle east, asia, latin america and many oppressed regions are? GRRM has written MANY, MANY times how much the rest of westeros “other”s them. we’ve seen them reduce dorne as a land of sex and hedonism, which parallels to how the western world viewed (and many still view) asia and the middle east. they see them as “less civilized.”
when myriah martell became daeron’s wife, the kingdoms were quick to shit on her because she brought dornish people to her court. when elia married rhaegar, people thought she was unworthy to marry the beloved, handsome, white prince because of her health and her dornishness.
don’t get me started on the whole “elia would have been okay being cheated on! dornish are okay with extramarital affairs and bastards!” like do you guys not hear yourself??? this hyper-sexualization is literally a classic racist trope.
and i’m certain grrm intended to write it this way to show that racism, in fact, exists in westerosi life and dominates in their politics, just as in real life. he’s even said before he considered giving targaryens dark skin: “I’d had dark-skinned dragonlords invade and conquer and dominate a largely white Westeros.” so him making dorne, a largely non-white population, being the only one to resist conquest and the only kingdom to join westeros on their own terms, is very much intended.
too many fucking fans reduce our arguments to us “pulling the race card.” well guess what? BECAUSE IT MATTERS. just as racism is embedded in our society, everything about how this fandom and characters view dorne go back to race and racism. just because you can’t admit to yourself that you’re upholding white supremacy ideals doesn’t mean it’s not happening.
YOU CANNOT DENY THAT RACE AND CULTURE ARE IMPORTANT ELEMENTS IN ASOIAF.
DORNE BEST KINGDOM! MARTELL BEST HOUSE! IDC IDC! WHO ELSE IN WESTEROS SAID FUCK YOU TO THEIR COLONIZERS AND LIVED TO TELL THE TALE?
(i can say more on the matter but i will just get more heated and end up writing a 10 page essay. when i tell you the law student in me comes alive when i have to defend dorne-)
