animorphs was like yeah what if you (child soldier) promised your best friend (also a child soldier) that you would save him, and that you would kill him before letting the body-snatching parasites take him. what if you realized that you can't ever do both. you can't save him without the yeerks. you can't kill him because if he dies everyone you've ever known dies.
what if you literally have to cut him open while he screams and pleads for you to stop and kill him. he hates you for saving him. he hates himself for hating you. you hate yourself for doing it, and you hate him for making you choose. all you can do is wash the blood off and go eat dinner with your family. you will wonder if what you did was worth it for the rest of your life.

I drew six radical 90s kids who definitely have no trauma and would never kill any civilians.

I love how Jake is unquestionably the leader when it comes to Animorphs business and Rachel is unquestionably the leader in social situations
It even goes beyond that! Because the team is that good at listening to and respecting each other. They're always listening to whichever teammate has the best strengths for the current situation.
Like you said, Rachel leads in social situations. She coordinates outfits (Erek in #27), ties bowties (the banquet in #21), and generally excels at talking their way into and out of situations (Zone 91 in #14, the hospital in #17, etc.)
Tobias leads any time the group is all flying — rescuing George Edleman in #17, the dogfight in #24 — and any time there's a battle in the wilderness because he directs troop movements from overhead (#13, #30, etc.)
Ax obviously leads in matters of technology (Bug fighter in #11, repair dock in #45, sario rips in the MMs), and andalite culture (#18, #38) even though he doesn't want to.
Cassie's in charge the moment the kids are in a new environment. She's leading the survival efforts in MM2, #25, #11, #4, #42, and every other time the setting gets dangerous.
Marco's role might be the subtlest. But IMHO, any time Marco's in charge, it's because Jake's fucking up. Marco's only real coup d'etat is when Jake spirals out in #31, but he also takes charge when Jake's panicking in #16 and #25, and he spends a lot of #50-54 informally leading to make up for Jake's unwellness.

every character in animorphs is actually fascinating and fucked up in their own, realistic way
Jake: a confident kid who is put into a leadership position. He constantly has to make choices that determine whether he and his friends live or die. So he matures faster and loses his childhood. Then he experiences a loss and just completely breaks down.
Marco: a kid who always used humor to deflect bad situations, slowly driving himself insane because those bad situations are now near constant. Worried he’s going to snap one day and he probably already has. Convincing himself hes “ruthless” to cover up that he’s so scared about what he’s doing.
Rachel: a fun fashionista who was always kinda competitive and anger-prone who now finds herself addicted to the war she’s been forced to fight in. Someone who’s worried, not because killing is too hard, but because it’s too easy. She knows what she brings to the group, she brings an ability to kill that the others take advantage of her for. It’s a two way relationship; they need her when they want someone to die but it not to weigh on their consciousness, and she needs them to assure her that she’s still human, still sane.
Cassie: a pacifist until she’s not. An animal activist who has to choose between her morals and her species near constantly. Who still tries to cling onto her moral code because if she lets go she might lose herself.
Tobias: an already messed up guy who never felt wanted, now trapped in a body that is not his. He’s slowly losing elements of his humanity. He constantly feels like he’s not enough and that he can’t turn to his friends for help bc he thinks they’ll leave him.
Ax: a kid in a strange land who just lost his brother and is honor-bound to avenge him. He has such high opinions of his species and has to continuously have that worldview shattered. All his friends turn to him for knowledge and he doesn’t know enough to satisfy them. He has to choose between his loyalty to his culture and his loyalty to his new friends.

I love the Animorphs fandom for deciding that Maro's taste in music is edgy, and Cassie's is all sunshine and rainbows, when canonically Cassie is the one buying Nine Inch Nales as it came out in the 90s and Marco is chilling to his dad's Bob Marley Vinyl.
Like, Cassie is one of the horse girls who relaxes to the darkest shit while calmly mucking out, and I love it.
Edit: thank you everyone in the comments who reminded me she was buying the Nice Is Neat CD so perpetually broke Marco could make a bootleg of it. That's just a nice "Cassie being a good friend" moment.
Thank you even more the commenter who pointed out that, upon seeing David's room for the first time, Cassie immediately starts judging his edglord music tastes, which is funny, but does like his Spawn comics, because finding out Cassie reads Spawn is even funnier.
Given the combination of ecological themes and body horror, I can now see Cassie as a fan of Alan Moore's run on swamp thing

Something about Cassie that's never really brought in either the books or analysis? She UNDERSTANDS the Yeerks better than any of the other Animorphs. She knows their ideals, she's met Yeerks she sympathizes with, she has a Yeerk morph. And it has both.a good and bad effect on her. Because she probably sympathisez with them more than she probably should, but she also understands the Yeerks better than the other Animorphs. It's why she tried just contacting the Peace Movement when they tried to bomb the Yeerk pool, why she let the Yeerks take the morphing cube etc. She knows the enemies way of thinking better than anyone else.
That's it exactly. Being able to understand your enemy's individual nuances, being able to understand why they want what they want... that's not a blessing. Because it makes it damned hard to fight the war, even one that desperately needs fighting.
Cassie has to save the Earth. She knows that the only way to prevent the extinction of bees and horses and redwoods and dandelions is to stop the yeerks before they can wipe out every Earth species except for humans. But she knows, too, why yeerks are doing this. Why the Council of Thirteen thinks they have no choice but to raze Earth, why individual yeerks both sympathize with their hosts and yet keep on kidnapping more. That paradox can't be resolved — either the yeerks get as many eyes and hands as andalites have, or Earth continues existing. Both can't occur, and there is no solution where no one gets hurt. There's not even a solution that's just or fair.
