Random Fact of the Day
Daily Pokémon that was randomly selected: Castform!
Did you know that Castform’s cold skin is as smooth as ice while in this form? This is the form Casform takes when covered in snow, its body becoming an ice-like material with a temperature near 23 degrees Fahrenheit. In an experiment where it was placed in a freezer, Castform did not change to this form!

New Pokémon Twitter Meme (x);
They're name is Vanilla (for both the plant [per traditional Pokémon NPC names] and the flavor), and they're ice cream themed, lol
Their gym challenge involves feeding their (non-battling partner Pokémon) Vanillite (named Bean) the correct ice cream flavor: if you get it right, it'll use icebeam to make a bridge for you to advance to the next platform. If you get it wrong, it'll use blizzard to blow you to the start of the gym

Have you reviewed castform yet?
Tumblr media
Castform looks like it has breasts, all right? You know it, I know it, so let's just have a good chuckle about it and move on to the rest of the review. Good? Okay, let's continue.
Anyway, I like Castform. The weather-based gimmick is unique and fun, and the design is simple and effective minus the unfortunate body shape (which is probably meant to look like a cloud or maybe a water molecule, but either way, it's not working). The gray body reflects its default normal typing well, and the mask around the eyes breaks up the head and draws attention to the face.
Tumblr media
(For some reason I can't find any high-res images of the other forms, so we're gonna have to settle for these.)
The Sunny Form does the obvious thing and has the head be a sun, but it does work pretty well. The round orbs for sun rays connect to the body shape, which is less unfortunate here, and the red, orange, and yellow palette is pleasant to look at. I also really like how the head is encapsulated by the weather, rather than just changing shape in and of itself.
I'm not really huge on the white body, however; I think it's meant to look like a cloud, but it makes the colors a bit too similar to the Normal Form's gray, and it makes the body look disconnected from the head. I think they could've gotten away with making it orange, but that's just me.
Tumblr media
The Rainy Form is similar to the Sunny Form, just with a rain theme instead of a sun one. Once again, the encapsulation of the head is neat, and the type of weather it represents is obvious. I also think the cloud body works a bit better here as it's easier to tell it's meant to represent rain clouds, though once again, I wouldn't have minded it matching the head color either.
Tumblr media
The Snowy Form is my personal favorite. I think it's the most interesting of the four due to the body shape, which goes up over the head and includes detailed tendrils and swirls. Granted, it does look much more like a flying-type "windy" form than anything snow-related (which I'd expect to look like a snowflake, given the other forms), but regardless, it's neat.
Tumblr media
The only thing I find odd about it is that it lacks the encapsulation that the other forms have. The original sprite's semi-transparency suggests that the light turquoise around the head is supposed to serve the same function, but why is it not a light purple to match the other forms? Not a big deal, it just bugs me from a consistency standpoint. Everything else is good.
If Castform could use anything in the future, it would be new forms. It seems bizarre that the weather Pokemon lacks forms to represent all weather, with a ground-type sandstorm form being the most obvious exclusion.
I also think it could potentially use something mega evolution-esq in the future due to its poor stats. For example, perhaps a mega Castform based off a rainbow that induces random weather every three turns or so. A flat-out stat boost would also be welcome.
Tumblr media
Overall, this is a fun and unique Pokemon. The only major issue with it is that it could use a few new forms to fully realize its gimmick; otherwise, it's fun and cute.

In which I post a modern gimmick deck and pretend it’s a holiday gift
I admit this is mostly because I’m still tired after working during the big storm here (the worse the weather, the more I have to do, in general) and posting a modern deck I use based on the concept is a good way to do something interesting this weekend. The deck isn’t actually that good compared to, like, anything you’d take into even an online tournament, but it’s fun as hell and fits the theme of my last few days so let’s do it. Note that it doesn’t have anything from the D regulation mark simply because I thought it would be interesting to try to build with stuff that’ll still be around in April. It’s Castform time!
Pokemon: 14
4 Castform Sunny Form CRE 3 Castform Snowy Form CRE 2 Bidoof BRS (this may change to CRZ once Crown Zenith is released) 2 Bibarel BRS 1 Manaphy BRS 1 Drapion V LOR 1 Radiant Charizard PGO
Trainers: 44
4 Professor’s Research 2 Boss’s Orders 2 Klara 2 Serena 4 Trekking Shoes 4 Ultra Ball 2 Escape Rope 2 Level Ball 4 Choice Belt 4 Magma Basin 4 Path to the Peak 4 PokeStop 3 Collapsed Stadium 3 Temple of Sinnoh
Energy: 2
2 Fire Energy
So the goal with Castform is to chuck 8 Stadiums into the discard pile so you can deal damage for free. Sunny Form hits for 150, but requires discarding a Stadium in play, and the 150 is required to hit some important numbers. Snowy Form doesn’t need the Stadium discard but only reaches 120 and can’t attack 2 turns in a row. The good news there is that the Castform cards retreat for free. Bibarel helps draw quicker, and Manaphy is required to stop things from getting 2 easy Prizes off you with spread. Drapion V exists because Mew is good, and Radiant Charizard with a Choice Belt can give you a late KO on a Lugia VSTAR or something similar, which can just win a game sometimes if it’s close. That’s why the Fire Energy is there and Klara and Magma Basin are played, to give maximum chance at that play. Since you’re discarding a lot, Professor’s Research, Ultra Ball, and Trekking Shoes are all here. If using D mark cards you can replace Level Ball with Quick Ball as well. Serena seems better than Boss’s Orders on first glance since you can either discard or force a switch, but after playing around I’ve moved to a 2-2 split because forcing out something that isn’t a V is fantastic sometimes. Boss’s Orders will also hit any Pokemon ex in Scarlet & VIolet.
The Choice Belts are required. Yes, they’ll be much worse once Pokemon ex show up and Tools can’t be saved during PokeStop discarding, but it’s really common to need that extra 30 to hit like 280 damage in 2 turns. Hopefully we’ll get some damage boosts to apply to newer Pokemon in the future.
The Stadium mix includes PokeStop for extra discarding, and Magma Basin was mentioned earlier. Path to the Peak hurts Drapion V and Radiant Charizard if they’re needed, but this deck runs 18 Stadiums so you can usually replace it if you have to. It messes up enough decks to get 4. Collapsed Stadium helps against Regis and Temple of Sinnoh against that and Lugia, so 3 of each were added as the last picks. If there’s a niche Stadium you like in these spots you can mix and match as you’d like.
Oh, and I feel like I should explain Escape Rope. Escape Rope is there to switch out your Bibarel and Charizard if stuck up front. Escape Rope was picked over anything else as it also makes the opponent switch, which is a small bit of insurance against Eiscue and Alolan Vulpix VSTAR. You probably lose to those anyway, but it gives a slight chance.
Other cards you could consider are Peony, where I get the idea of why you’d want it (discard hand, pick up a couple of Trainers) but Research just gets you 7 cards right away and I find that better overall. Rescue Carrier can get back your Castform. Klara’s usually enough in match-ups where you don’t need Charizard and it’s hard to fit but it would be good. I’ve also seen Galarian Articuno V and played around with it a bit but it’s an extra 2 Prize target that didn’t speed things up enough for my taste. If playing with D regulation mark there’s always Crobat V (same problem as Articuno, but you rely less on Bibarel) and Galarian Meowth.
Overall, Castform’s fun. It’s not going to routinely beat any of the good decks out there, but you’re playing in a different way when using it and things come together often enough that you don’t feel hopeless all that often. Hopefully there’s enough support in future sets to give it a few extra months but for now this is my favorite deck to mess around with in a casual setting.

So...For my pure Ice Team, the Pokemon I have in mind for it are: Glaceon Cryogonal Vanilluxe Castform Regice Beartic
I have Glaceon, Castform, a Vanillish I will evolve into Vanilluxe once I have enough candy, and am catching every Cubchoo and Cryogonal I find until I get good ones. No idea when/if Regice might become available or even if I’ll be able to get it (if it’s a 5 star raid I won’t be able to do it unless I get lucky like I did with the Nihilego raid where four people were already battling).
Meanwhile I happen to have an Avalugg with perfect stats. Avalugg is pretty cool. But I may yet find myself with a Regice. On the other hand, I like Snowy forme Castform, but her Combat Power is capped pretty low (less than 1700 CP by level 40) whereas Avalugg’s is over 3100 and as I said mine is perfect. I’ve never been one to replace a Pokemon I like just because another is “better” (and several of my other favourites have even lower CP), but it’s not like Castform is an absolute favourite and I do actually like Avalugg. But then again Regice, Beartic, and Vanilluxe aren’t absolute favourites either. The only two that will not be replaced are Glaceon and Cryogonal unless they come up with six really nice pure Ice types before the end of the franchise.
So the question is: do I leave my perfect Avalugg to her PokeDex slot, only to take up space and never to be powered up to her potential? Or do I switch her into my pure Ice team and ditch Regice (which it might be a long time before I can get it), or Castform (which will never be very strong and I only just caught her so haven’t invested anything into her), or Beartic (since I don’t yet have one)?
The other thing to consider about Castform is that she only retains her Snowy forme in Pokemon Go. In the main games her forme would change based on weather changing moves which would cause her to be ice, fire, or water, and she’d be a normal type otherwise, so not a true ice type (and I don’t really like the designs of the other formes). To consider about Beartic, I’m not big on the snot-beard design, but it’s a POLAR BEAR. Not crazy about Vanilluxe’s design either (I like Vanillite’s better), but I love the concept and also how much that one pissed people off. If it just had swirls like Snowy Castform’s it would be perfect! And while I love how crystalline Regice looks, I don’t love the golem designs in general (nothing against them--they’re just not my thing), and Cryogonal has the ice crystal thing down perfectly (which is why it’s a permanent member). Avalugg, I guess the legs could be better, but it’s otherwise pretty solid (pun noticed after the fact).
You see my dilemma.

how do people even decide on y/n's pokemon teams in reader insert fics?
Some people pick Eevee since it in theory can become anything.
Some pick Pokémon that will move plot along or a gimmick (fire types in a snowy environment, legendary causing havoc, nurse with healing pokemon etc).
You could try giving Y/N Pokémon that have multiple forms to show that Y/N can be anything.
Example Pokémon: Ditto, Zoroark (illusions), Kecleon (type changes), Oricorio (appearance & type), Castform (form), Cherrim (form)
Have a nice day/night

oh yeah ok those are ideas! i did end up using both of your advice in the notes as to how y/n acquires their mons or what their mons are
