@cha0ticlesbian had this question on my last post:
Hi! Genuine question, I’m new to supernatural (I’m on season 4) and I can definitely see what people mean about dean and cas and obviously I know about the confession scene but I’m confused if it’s true that deans feeling are “up to interruption” or if he just doesn’t like him back? Also I’ve seen some people saying he’s like homophobic? Ive just really confused and dean is my favorite so I wanna know lol
So let's talk about that. Are Dean's feelings up to interpretation?
Simply put, yes.
Basically, in s15e18 "Despair", when Cas is giving his whole "I love you" speech, Dean doesn't say very much. At random intervals, he gives NPC-type comments* like "Why does this sound like a goodbye?" and "Don't do this, Cas". He does not ever say "I love you too" (unless you're watching the Spanish dubbed version, where he says exactly that).
On the surface, I know my friends (who only get their spn info from me holding them hostage in my discord server), took issue with the line "don't do this". They kind of read it as Dean not respecting Cas in Cas's final moments-- in their eyes, Dean didnt want Cas to confess because he's uncomfortable with Cas's feelings. But the speech isn't about Dean-- it's about Cas giving himself permission to be happy.
That line of thinking plus the past allegations of Jensen Ackles being homophobic is usually where people get the idea that Dean is homophobic. From what I can see, the "Dean is homophobic" is mostly part of the meme of the scene in general, and not something most people actually believe, but some people do genuinely believe he is homophobic. This belief is also supported by Dean's hypermasculine personality in general and the comments he makes; we never once see him outwardly homophobic to any of the openly queer SPN characters, but especially in earlier seasons, he makes jokes (like Sam being a girl because he has long hair) that you would expect someone homophobic to say.
I do think homophobic Dean a valid interpretation, but the logic kind of ignores some of the context of the scene.
For one, there's a moment after the confession where Dean gets a call from "Cas" (it's Lucifer) telling him that Cas is outside the Bunker and needs to be let out. Dean breaks into a sprint to get to the door, and I think this action speaks louder than words (or, lack thereof). Whether or not Dean reciprocates, he cares about Cas as a friend and he wants Cas to be alive again.
For two, when it comes to "don't do this", the more common interpretation is that Dean doesn't want Cas to sacrifice himself. Again, Cas starts the speech by explaning that he will die during his happiest moment, and then transitions into saying that confessing his love to Dean is his happiest moment. Dean doesn't want Castiel to defeat Billie by sacrificing himself.
As a destiel shipper, my interpretation of this scene is a slight variation of the previous one. In my general view of SPN, Dean has known he's in love with Cas since at least s11, and he's known Cas has loved him back for a while, but he's just never felt like it was the right time to start a relationship (constant apocalypses and everything) and he's worried that he'll screw it up. In my head, when he says "don't do this", it means more like "don't do this [love confession like this]". Like, Dean doesn't want their first ILYs* to be marred by the fact that Cas is sacrificing himself.
So, last question-- how do people read the scene as Dean liking Cas back when he never verbally reciprocates?
Some people see Dean's silence as him either not liking Cas back or not realizing he likes Cas back yet, but there's another option here. The reason Cas is dying is because he believes this is his happiest moment. His speech outright states that he believes Dean does not love him back ("the one thing I want is the thing I cannot have"). It's totally possible that Dean reciprocates, but in his mind, saying that really would trigger Cas's happiest moment. There are some great fix-it fics built on the premise of "Dean insults the sht outta Cas to spoil Cas's happiest moment and stop him from being taken by the Empty".
* okay last point. I wasn't sure where to insert this but I think it's insanely interesting. The scene in s15e18 is not actually the first time Cas tells Dean he loves him. In s12, there is an episode where Cas believes he is dying, and he says the line "I love you. I love all of you" to the small crowd of Dean, Sam, and Mary. NPC behavior from Dean ensues as he insists Cas isn't going to die without ever acknowledging the "I love you". The common interpretation is that the first ILY is for Dean, and the second ILY is Cas speaking to the Winchesters as a whole. Do with that as you will lol
Anyway, that's all I got :D thank you for the opportunity to rant about supernatural and feel free to ask me if you have any other questions!

Something’s Wrong With Dean Part 2
[Part 2]
“Put these on,” Dean shoved some clothes into Cas’ chest once they entered the bedroom together.
“What’s the purpose of this?” He asked, but was already shedding his layers as he did.
“I just,” Dean looked around, suddenly uncomfortable, “I need sleep, and I won’t be able to if I don’t know that you’re okay…”
“So the clothes are for comfort while we-”
“Yeah,” he cut in, pulling his own pants down to replace with cotton ones instead.
“Okay,” Cas hurried to catch up.
Soon, the hunter slid wordlessly into the bed, leaving room for the other to follow and he did.
His hand hovered for a moment over Dean’s body, which faced away from him in a way that had him slotting against him seamlessly, before the limb decided to wrap around his waist and up toward his heart.
“Is this okay?” he asked timidly.
Dean’s hand gripped the one on his chest as if to keep it there, though Cas had no plan of moving unless told to.
He enjoyed the feeling of his heart beating on both sides, against his chest and his palm.
“Yes,” was the last whispered sound before he drifted off to sleep.
Cas remained motionless for hours before making his escape and slipping soundlessly from the room.
Sam froze further down the hallway at the sight of Cas closing the door with care and attempting to slip away unnoticed. That was until his eyes met with the on-looking hunter’s.
“Sam,” his posture stiffened.
Sam’s eyes trailed down the borrowed t-shirt and sweatpants now adorning the Angel, causing Cas to glance down nervously at himself.
“Your brother insisted,” he explained before a thought seemed to strike him, “It’s late… is something wrong?”
“I’m… uh…” Sam rubbed the back of his neck, “I was just…”
“Ah,” Cas smiled to himself, “Same as me then…” he glanced at the door to Dean’s room, “Let’s move away from-“
“Yeah, okay,” Sam nodded and practically tripped over himself getting started down the hall.
A few hours passed as the two fell into the comfortability of research, each trying their hardest to find an out for Dean. Cas became deeply invested in what he was reading. He almost missed the sound of Dean’s shaking and heavy breath coming down the hall until he was sliding around the corner with a horribly wide and frantic gaze.
“Dean,” Cas hadn’t meant to stand but he found himself on his feet.
“You weren’t there when I woke up, I…” Dean clenched his fist to stop his hand shaking, “I thought…”
“I’m sorry,” Cas crossed to him, placing a hand on each of his shoulders, “I didn’t mean to worry you.”
“What are you doing?” he asked calmly before his eyes found Sam’s and narrowed in suspicion.
He shook Cas off and stalked toward the table, grabbing one of the books harshly and turning it to see the cover.
“I said no!” he turned back to Cas, waving the book at him.
“And I disagreed,” was the Angel’s firm response.
“It isn’t up to you!” Dean slammed the book down.
“So you can risk everything to save me, but I can’t do the same?” Cas was losing control of his anger.
“No!” Dean bit back, “You can’t!”
“Oh, so good to know that you feel like you own me now that you’ve brought me back-“
“I don’t own you, I love you!” Dean flung his arms out at his side, “And I’ll be damned if I get you back just to have you throw your life away again!”
“Then you understand how I feel!” Cas’ voice shook with his rage, “Do you have any idea what ten years feels like to a being like me?”
He stepped forward, snaking a hand around to cradle the hunter’s neck.
“Ten years is nothing to me, Dean…” Cas’ eyes turned pleading and broken, “You’re offering me a moment of happiness just to have to have it ripped away…”
“Kind of like telling me you loved me and dying a minute later?” Dean practically whispered, clearing his throat and continuing when it seemed to effectively silence the Angel’s response, “If I hadn’t, it would’ve been me with it ripped away…” he added darkly, “You were wrong about me, see… I’m not selfless at all.”
Dean pulled away and tore from the room with a finality that had Cas frozen in place.
“You okay?” Sam asked after a moment, having stood at some point unbeknownst as his hand rested on Cas’ shoulder without him anticipating it.
“I never would’ve done it if I’d known,” he looked down as his hands wrung, the humanity of the movement catching Cas off-guard, “I never imagined that he…“
“Why were you so sure?” Sam asked, a curious look to his eyes.
“Dean’s the first person I’ve ever loved…” the Angel’s voice was hushed as he replied, “When he called me ‘family’ and ‘brother’, I believed that to be his truth… I didn’t question it.”
He grimaced slightly before correcting himself.
“That’s not true…” he sighed, “I constantly questioned, but I assumed that to be hopeful thinking.”
“Wishful,” Sam’s lip turned up.
“Right, wishful thinking,” Cas nodded, finally turning toward the other man.
“I’ve never seen Dean like this…” Sam remarked softly, “I was gone for Lisa so I don’t know how deep that really got, but-“
“I would watch him sometimes…” the Angel admitted, “back then,” he offered in explanation, “But only when she wasn’t with him… I couldn’t bare to see them together…”
“You stayed away?” Sam seemed surprised.
“I had to,” Cas’ fist clenched at his side, “And I tried, but…”
“But sometimes you’d watch him,” Sam filled in for him.
“Yes… I realize now that I was crossing a line,” a guilty look crossed his stoic face, “But there was something about watching him… mow the lawn and take out the trash… fall asleep watching tv in the living room…”
“Those are domestic things…” Sam explained gently, “Maybe things you wanted to be part of…”
“Yes, I suppose so,” he nodded distractedly.
“Hey Cas,” Sam drew him back.
“Hm?”
“Go be part of it,” the hunter nodded with a smirk.
“Yes, I think I will,” Cas softened before disappearing in the same direction Dean had.
His steps echoed once he was properly in the hallway, announcing his ascension, until he was hovering just outside of the door.
“Come in or go away,” Dean’s voice reached him and he pushed the door open with an exasperated sigh.
“I’m a hypocrite,” Cas announced and Dean’s expression rose in triumph, “But you’re a jerk.”
“How?” his eyebrows dropped just as quickly.
“I didn’t know you loved me when I left you,” he sank onto the bed in front of him, one leg bent beneath his body weight and the other hanging over the side, “I wasn’t leaving us behind… leaving this behind.”
He took Dean’s hand in his and the hunter’s gaze dropped to the connection.
“Do you think I want to?” Dean asked after a silent pause, “Cas, we tried everything to get you back… I did what I had to do and I’d do it again.”
“I can’t let you go back there,” Cas shook as their eyes met.
“Well, I won’t agree to anything that might bring the empty back for you,” Dean replied defiantly, “So I guess this is where we stand.”
“I had an idea about that…” Cas’ gaze dropped.
“That look tells me I’m not gonna like it,” Dean raised a brow.
“No, probably not,” a grin threatened to pull at his mouth and his hand gripped tighter around Dean’s, “But don’t shut it down immediately?”
It was a request, eyes imploring him for this one thing.
“Just think about it…” he reiterated and Dean couldn’t help but nod.
Cas took an unnecessary breath to steady himself, something he’d picked up around the boys.
“I could… remove my grace…” he gripped tighter to the hand in his, “Like purgatory, the empty isn’t meant for humans… The shadow has no claim on me without my grace and we could live out our lives… together…”
“You’d give up your grace and be human,” Dean clarified, looking almost pained as he kept his reaction in check.
“Yes,” he nodded back.
“And I’m supposed to think on it?” the hunter added.
“I would appreciate it if you could, yes,” Cas fought a smile.
“Mm Hm, totally can…” Dean nodded with a tight lip, “…do that- listen, Cas, I just need to say one thing.”
“Of course you do,” Cas’ face dropped.
“No, just listen,” he scooted closer, “I feel like I’ve brainwashed you into thinking I’m worth more than I am- wait,” he silenced Cas before he could interrupt, “I feel like that because that is more believable in my mind than the fact that I could be enough for you. I’m just not! Please don’t do this for me.”
“It’s not just for you,” Cas looked down at the shortened space between them, “It’s a lot for me too.”
“So you’re set on this,” Dean’s gaze also dropped to their intertwined hands.
“Yes, I believe I am,” he explained assuredly, “And of getting you out of this deal.”
“Damnit, Cas,” he pulled him foreword, pressing their foreheads together in the middle, “Can’t you just let this go?”
“Never,” he leaned in more, intoxicated by the warmth of the other man.
His arms wrapped around him and he buried his face in the crook of Dean’s neck, receiving an exasperated and defeated sigh as the hunter’s body relaxed against his own.
“Why are you so foolish?” Cas rested his chin atop the hunter’s shoulder, drawing him in even further.
“I’m no good when you’re gone,” Dean clung back.
“I only had to face losing you for a few hours with that bomb for Amara,” Cas pulled back to look at him, “but I hope to never feel that way again…”
“We never talked about that,” Dean’s brows dipped.
“Your brother was missing and Mary was back,” Cas dismissed, “And if we had, it would’ve given away my feelings a little too much…”
“Well, now I really wish we’d talked,” the hunter quipped with a hint of a smile which reflected back to him on Cas’ face as well.
“I’d um… like to do it promptly,” he dropped his eyes, “And I want you to be there… if you will.”
“Of course,” Dean answered without a second thought, “Like I’d let you do it alone… But… How promptly we talking here?”
“Tomorrow?” Cas’ brow rose with his eyes.
“You’re asking me?” Dean grinned fully now.
“Tomorrow,” he stated more firmly this time.
“Yeah, okay… You’ll tell me if you change your mind though. Sleep on it and- and let me know if you don’t wanna… do that anymore.”
“I don’t sleep, and I’m certain of this, Dean,” Cas touch Dean’s cheek softly, “This is what I want.”
“What if we waited to see if there even is a way out of this deal…” Dean tried again, “What’s the hurry?”
The Angel sighed, “If that’s what you really want… alright.”

"I have no idea how to put him together Mikey, he's literally Everywhere! And we can't put him together without a soul!"
"He'll have a soul, trust me."
"That worked well last time.."
"Gabriel!"
"Yeah yeah, you don't have to use the big brother voice."
My name is Jack Winchester.
My mother is Kelly Kline. My father is Castiel. I have a soul. I want to go back.

///
His landing was hard, broken bones in his body, everything was too loud, the world was dark. He wanted to scream but nothing came out his mouth but the high pitched scream of his true form.
And then he felt light and the world came back to him, warm hands were touching his face, the familiar warmth of Castiels grace filled him. Blue. He blinked, once, twice. His ears were ringing but sound came back and he cried tears and tears of joy to be back and his father hugged him tight.
"Welcome home, son."

There is something that has always deeply bothered me about the confession scene, and I haven't seen many people talk about it (no, this is not about how Dean should've rescued Cas or about how Dean was the homophobic version of this 🧍 emote the entire time). This opinion has been peer-reviewed by my friends who get all their supernatural information from me so I'm obviously correct.
Anyway. Cas should not have been taken by the Empty in s15e18 "Despair" and I will die on this hill.
For those of you havent watched Supernatural and only get information force-fed to you by me, the Empty is a supernatural entity that rules the afterlife where angels and demons go after they die. The Empty and Castiel have a very antagonist relationship, tracing back to at least season 13. Basically, Castiel died and annoyed the Empty into letting him come back to life.
Fast forwarding to season 14 (specifically s14e08, "Byzantium"), Jack (Castiel's adopted half-angel son) dies and the Winchesters attempt to revive him. Cas goes to Heaven to find Jack, but the Empty is looking for Jack, too. Cas attempts to trade his soul for Jack's, allowing Jack to be revived by the Winchester's spell with Castiel being taken to the Empty immediately. However, the Empty says this:
Deal. Oh, but not now. No, no, no, no, no. No, you see, I-I meant what I said. I-I want you to suffer. I want you to go back to-- to your normal life and-- and then forget about this and forget about me. And-- And then, when you finally give yourself permission to be happy and let the sun shine on your face, that's when I'll come. That's when I'll come to drag you to nothing.
When Castiel cashes in on this deal during s15e18, he tells Dean that the Empty will take him in his happiest moment, which Cas believes to be him confessing his love for Dean. Because he believes Dean will never reciprocate, this confession is Castiel's happiest moment, and he is giving himself permission to be happy when he finally tells Dean about his feelings.
But "happiest moment" isn't actually one of the conditions of the deal. Looking at the text, the Empty presents two conditions for when it will take Cas:
Cas needs to forget about this deal with the Empty
And then, Cas needs to allow himself to be happy
Like I said, the confession as it stands does fulfill the second condition. But Castiel never fulfilled the first condition of the deal. He never forgot about his deal with the Empty-- in fact, he starts his confession with an explanation of the deal he made.
Ergo, Castiel's love confession did not fulfill the terms the Empty laid out for the deal, and Castiel should not have been taken.
There is obviously a case to be made for following the letter vs spirit of the law (if you want to be really pedantic, Cas was in a windowless room with no sun to shine on his face), but it goes against the spirit of the deal for the Empty to take Cas when it did.
If you haven't seen the episode (s15e18 Despair), Dean lands a near-fatal hit on Billie (aka Death). Billie chases after Dean and Cas, and they hide out in the dungeon. Billie attempts to break down the door while Dean and Cas weigh how they can get out of this. Dean says that there is no way to stop Billie, and Cas comes up with the idea to summon the Empty (by experiencing his happiest moment, aka confessing his love); the Empty also hates Billie and would therefore snatch her up too when it took Cas.
The Empty states very explicitly that its whole purpose for the terms of the deal is that it wants Cas to suffer. Snatching Cas's happiness away from him when he thought he would be free causes Cas more suffering than the Empty taking him the minute Jack was revived. There is no suffering in Cas dying knowing that Dean a) knows how Cas feels and b) will be saved because of Cas's actions. There is, however, suffering in Cas dying without any way of saving Dean's life-- which is what would've happened if the Empty hadn't shown up.
Ergo, Cas's speech did not fulfill the terms of the Empty's deal, and even if it had, it would have been more in-character and in line with the spirit of the deal if the Empty had stayed out of it and let Dean die.
Ergo, Castiel should not have been taken by the Empty.
Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.
