Carmilla gets a little snarky in this scene, saying 'the Castle moves around' and that's part of her excuse on why she arrived so late after being summoned.
Aside from the fact it's funny Dracula didn't call her out on her bullshit by pointing out the Asian vampires Cho, Raman, and Sharma definitely had a much longer journey, it does raise the question: Why didn't Dracula just use the Castle to pick up his Generals in the ultimate carpool?

In which Jonathan meets the brides.
I love the brides. I wish we had more lore for them. I want to know what they're doing now.

Yes, Curse of Strahd is a better adaptation of Dracula than many adaptations of Dracula, because:
Strahd is a gaslighting manipulative bastard, just like Dracula.
His lead female target wants nothing to do with him, just like Dracula.
He's defeated by your party of random DnD misfits who stumbled into his plans, just like Dracula.
Your party probably includes dragonborns and tieflings and kenku, but Dracula has an English lordling, a depressed asylum doctor, a Texan cowboy with a Bowie knife, an eccentric Dutch professor who talks like absolutely no Dutchman ever, a brilliant schoolmistress and her husband, the world's most justifiably pissed off solicitor, now with Kukri, all gunning for his head.
Somewhere in Barovia, Strahd is kinda relieved.

Listening to a production of Dracula and I am JUST REALIZING that the infamous Mirror Scene distracted me from what ELSE happened that day, which was that Jonathan found a window, saw that the view was gorgeous, and then noted that the castle was on the edge of a CLIFF. I thought that scene was just to illustrate Jonathan’s changing mindset from “ooh, lovely scenery” to “grim portends! Danger! I’m trapped!”, but it’s ALSO to set things up for his escape attempt! He says that there’s a thousand-foot drop straight down into a chasm from that window, and while it’s not the window he escaped from, it REALLY highlights how incredibly dangerous it must have been for him. And how desperate he must have been to attempt it! A sharp-eyed reader would have been so worried!

Dracula Daily sketch for June 17th
In which Jonathan catches a glimpse of the outside world.
Not comfortable at all with the language used to describe most of the characters and actions in this entry, so I took the opportunity to look at pictures of Romanian castles and focus on castle Dracula's design instead.

June 24th
I don't have anything funny or in-character to write about today's entry. Feels wrong to crack wise at something so dark with the unfortunate timing of current US events.
I will say that as a long time Dracula reader, June 24th is one of the entries I was previously looking forward to Tumblr discovering. This is really one of the moments where Dracula gets dark and reminds you that it is a horror story and the kooky Count is a ruthless monster who will smile as he feeds children to his Brides and their mothers to his wolves.
So many subsequent adaptations, starting from the 1970's, have romanticised Count Dracula in keeping with the trend toward sexy, tragic, sympathetic vampires. There's nothing wrong with that, when put in historical context it's been a slow shift across decades toward finding common ground with fictional monsters and seeing them as emotionally and morally complex beings and sometimes the heroes of their own stories.
But there's no denying the power of a pure-evil villain and the original Dracula is one of literature's finest. As a symbol of evil he can be many things; for the Victorians the fear of the invading foreigner, for the English protestant characters the fear of the mysticism of the old world and the corrupt decadence of ancient feudal aristocracy that 'rational' Victorian England was increasingly moving away from, and for us moderns, as shown this week, the fear of powerful, cruel old white men suppressing others with control and violence whilst clinging to power long after their time has passed…
This Dracula isn't motivated by lost love or a tragic backstory and as his goals and ambitions become more obvious we'll see just what horrors poor Jonathan may have inadvertently unleashed.
Speaking of Jonathan, his palpable despair and depression here is heartbreaking, and Stoker writes it well, especially for a writer in an era where mental health was only just beginning to be approached scientifically (as we can see from Seward's entries, which I WILL get back to now I'm out of the covid woods).
