Edinburgh from the Castle, looking East across the Esplanade towards the Royal Mile..

What is interesting to me here is the difference in Ramsay Gardens , the coin the old photo by the famous duo Hill and Adamson. The pic is date 1846 , that's about 178 years ago.

The original Ramsay Gardens dates from 1733 and was built by the poet and wig-maker Allan Ramsay the Elder. The houses we know nowadays wree largely developed between 1890 and 1893 by urban planner Patrick Geddes.

Geddes must have liked this part of The Royal Mile as he bought a tower there1892, it became known as The Outlook Tower, most folk know it nowadays as The CameraObscura, the camerawas already part of thetower when Geddes moved in, he later wrote...

“From the high garden, or from one of your tree-top castles, you look out upon everything, you see for miles and miles; but in your dark little caves in the ivy-bank you can sit and dream. Up in your tree-castle you often sit dreaming, of course; and from your hidden cave, through it’s ivy curtain, you love to peep; still, in the main, one is the Out-world’s Watch-tower, the other the In-world’s Gate.”

I found a paphlet online advertisng the Camera Obscura, from around 1910, the cost to visit was three pence., today it costs £22.95. I must admit I have never been, I can't justify spending that amount of money, my late mum must have visited as I recall her talking about when I was a bairn.
